Frost and Fire – Cracker Night With A Twist! The quintessential Aussie bonfire night is set to be re-created in Forbes on June 22, but with a twist. Forbes Shire Council is coordinating an amazing event called Frost and Fire, which is FREE to attend, to be held at the Lake Forbes Ski Dam. The event is underpinned by the themes of spending time with friends in the great outdoors by a fire, and Frost and Fire is set to make an impression on both young and old. The location will set the perfect scene, surrounded by water, majestic gum trees and the night sky ablaze with millions of stars. On a chilly Tuesday night this week Frost and Fire was launched in Forbes. 2019 is Frost and Fires’ inaugural year and promises plenty of fire, hearty food, warming beverages and great entertainment. Sit back and relax fireside whilst enjoying the amazing line up of live music. Local talent, Lily Gaffaney will perform alongside Young Monks from Canberra. Headline act, Lior is a must see, having recently achieved international acclaim and playing with the

THUMBS UP... THUMBS DOWN MAYORAL NOTES The weeks are rolling by very quickly and we are almost half way through the year. The cold snap was a little bit of a shock but expected at this time of the year. The rain was very welcome and let’s hope it keeps up. There has been some confusion in the community about the Templar Street beautification project. In order to clarify what will be happening with the 3B option that Council resolved to go with at the March meeting, we have put together a DL brochure with the Consultants artistic impression and plan. These will be delivered to each household this week. If anyone has any questions or comments please don’t hesitate to contact me, councillors or staff. I have had a lot of positive comments in relation to the solar lights being installed around the Lake. This will allow people to walk safely around the lake after dark, whether it is winter or the evenings in the heat of summer. The ground work is progressing quickly at the homemakers centre site and the construction team will com-

Last week Riverina Nationals’ MP and Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack lauded the efforts of volunteers as “champions of their local communities”. The praise came as events rolled out to acknowledge the hard work of volunteers during National Volunteer Week. “Volunteers are so important to the social fabric of our local communities,” Mr McCormack said. “Every day, we should be thanking those who sacrifice their time to make our regions even better places to live and work. Having a dedicated week to show our appreciation is the least we can do to show the pillars of our local communities that we care about what they do for the Riverina and Central West,” continued Mr McCormack. “Volunteers are champions of their local communities and whether it is helping out the local sporting club, assisting our most vulnerable or putting time in recovery efforts after a significant storm, these selfless individuals play an essential role in helping to shape rural and regional Australia as well as helping to build resilience in our towns and regional capitals,” continued Mr McCormack. The Liberal and Nationals’ Government recognises these efforts by providing grants through its Volunteer Grants Program. “In the most recent round, 40 grants were given to well-deserved organisations including $3,550 for Forbes Cancer Patients Assistance Society, $4,750 for Forbes Fins Swimming Club Inc, $4,959 for Forbes Rugby Union Club Inc and $1,500 for the Forbes Toy Library,” Mr McCormack said. “These grants, which range from $1,000 to $5,000, seem small but they make such a tangible difference for volunteer organisations to be able to continue the invaluable work they do in our communities.”

Bogan Gate CWA Ladies Have Been Busy Parkes, Forbes and Condobolin held their Annual Bridge Day at Bogan Gate on 7th April, with players from West Wyalong joining in. The CWA catered for everyone for the 12th time making it a thoroughly enjoyable day. President Marion McIntyre laid a wreath on behalf of the CWA at the local Anzac Day Dawn Service. Ten members attended the May meeting. International officer Heather Veal provided interesting information on the country of study this year, Papua New Guinea. Some members have started writing their life stories after attending a work-

shop at the Parkes Library. As this drought is still crippling the community, the CWA will be helping Bogan Gate and Gunningbland farmers and their families by hosting a free bbq night at the Railway Hotel in Bogan Gate on 29th June at 6:30pm. “We hope many will come to this night as it is very important in these times to mix with friends and all help each other,” said the organisers. The next meeting is on Thursday, 20th June at 1:30pm at the hall. Visitors are always most welcome.

I'm your voice in Parliament

How long have you lived in or around Forbes and what do you like about living here? I moved here about 13 years ago. I lived here for a couple of years before spending some time in Sydney and then Canberra. I came back to Forbes in 2016. Where do you work and what do you enjoy most about your work? I am part of the IT team at the Catholic Education Office. It’s a great place to work. There’s a lot of variety in what we do which I like. It’s a relatively new field of work for me and it’s certainly challenging. Occasionally you might have to pretend a little to know what you’re talking about. What do you do to unwind after work or on weekends? There’s not much unwinding happening at the moment. My four and two-year-old aren’t really interested in it. If I can get one TV show in each night I’m happy. What are you really good at? Some say I’m an okay guitarist. What is your pet hate? Our pet. Well, her behaviour anyway. We have a labradoodle. She chews everything. I had about eight pairs of thongs and I’m down to zero. If you could have a super power what would it be and why? I wouldn’t mind having a photographic memory. That way I might have a shot at winning the occasional argument. I’m often hearing the words “I told you this already”. Tell us about your best holiday ever? I’d have to say my first road trip to Byron Bay while I was at Uni. A friend and I went up there for the Splendour in the Grass music festival. We did a lot of surfing back then (it was actually bodyboarding but surfing sounds better). There wasn’t much tripplanning (we had no accommodation or even tickets), but we survived the week and had a great time. What makes your day? Seeing my boys sleeping soundly in their beds each night. It makes all the craziness and chaos that led up to it totally worth it.

Scholarships Available For Rural Students Riverina Nationals’ MP Michael McCormack is encouraging rural and regional students to apply for Government-funded scholarships to assist with their tertiary education costs. Students are invited to apply for scholarships under the expanded third round of the $58.1 million Rural and Regional Enterprise Scholarships program. Mr McCormack said eligible students could benefit from up to $18,000 which could go towards the cost of their university or vocational education. “I believe a student’s postcode should not limit their potential,” Mr McCormack said. “We know regional students face a number of challenges which their city counterparts take for granted. The Liberal and Nationals in Government is ensuring that every Australian has access to a world-class education,” continued Mr McCormack. The scholarships cover courses including certificate IV through to a PhD and can offer support to those seeking flexible study arrangements. “I urge and encourage all eligible students throughout the Riverina and Central West to apply,” Mr McCormack said. Phil Donato Welcomes Local Student Leaders In Parliament Last Thursday Phil Donato met with young emerging leaders of the community who travelled to NSW Parliament from seven different schools in the Orange electorate including Red Bend Catholic College, as part of the Student Leadership Program. During the visit students had the opportunity to ask questions of attending MPs about leadership, making decisions and representation. “It was wonderful to have Year 12 student leaders from across the Orange electorate spend the day at Parliament and see what happens during a sitting week,” Mr Donato said. “The Student Leadership Program is a great initiative which aims to inspire and foster the development of student leaders toward post-school leadership in our community,” continued Mr Donato. Attending on the day were students from Parkes High School, Orange Christian School, Red Bend Catholic College, Canowindra High School, Molong Central School, Yeoval Central School and Peak Hill Central School.

Average Scoring In Medal Round The BWR Accountants & Advisors sponsored Monthly Medal was played on Saturday and was contested by a field of 54 who generally returned average scores across the board. Peter Dawson won the A-Grade Medal with a 72 nett, taking the Medal on count back from visitor Andrew Brownlow (Peak Hill). The B-Grade was won by Garry Collits with a 71 nett, the best round of the day. Runner-up was Bob Borger with 72 nett and on count back from a bevy of players. The C-Grader winner was Bede Tooth 72 nett ahead of runner-up Robert Scott with 73. The ball sweep went to 75 nett on count back: 71 – G Collits; 72 – R Borger, P Dawson, A Brownlow, B Everest, S Kirkman, B Tooth, P Barnes; 73 – R Scott; 74 – N McMillan, B Doyle, S Sallaway, P Maher; 75 - G Falvey. The NTP’s went to: 9th – R Nixon; 18th – C Barrett. The visitors included Andrew Brownlow (Peak Hill) and Scott Mackenzie (Parkes). The Sunday Stableford Medley field was affected by a number of other events happening on the day. The winner was Kerry Stirling (31 points) on count back. There

was no Runner-up or ball sweep. Bess Shields got the NTP on the 9th, while the 18th remained vacant. On Sunday Forbes hosted a round of the JNJG ‘Juniors on the Move’ series of events. Over 30 Juniors participated, playing a modified 9-hole course, and attending from Dubbo, Orange, Bathurst, Parkes, Cowra and Forbes. Golf Pro Adrian Lees was the prime organiser at Forbes and well pleased with the turn out. The Can-Assist Charity Day will be held this Sat 8 June. This is a 4-person Ambrose event, with all proceeds going to the Forbes Can-Assist Branch. The nomination fee includes a lunch and prizes. So make an effort, and participate in this event. The Lachlan Valley Pennants and Championships, is being held at West Wyalong on Sunday 16 June. This is the premier event for Lachlan Valley District golf. We need a good representation from the Club so get your name on the list in the Pro Shop. Play has commenced in the Wallace Cup, with some 1st and 2nd round matches played or scheduled. The Forbes Netball Association has chosen June 15th 2019 to be The Kids Cancer Project fundraiser where all players and everyone at netball will participate in a PJ day. This day is a major fundraiser for The Kids Cancer Project where netball associations all over the state will raise much needed funds for the charity. Cooking from donations will be sold at the canteen, to raise extra funds, so everyone is asked to bring some donations, and some money to donate to the fundraising day. All players and umpires must wear joggers for their games.

Forbes Rugby Union It was a tough day at the office for the Forbes Platypi on Saturday with all three teams going down to the Dubbo Kangaroos in Dubbo. The women’s side were beaten 38-21, Second grade went down 45-0 and First grade had a close game going down 27-20 to the Dubbo Kangaroos. This Saturday is a general bye due to the Queen’s Birthday Long Weekend. The Under 13’s lost to Orange City 34-10 with tries scored by Toby Jarrick and Jonah Little, the boys did a great job taking on Orange City who were sitting at No 1 on the ladder. The Under 15’s lost to Dubbo Blues 58-0, tough game today against a very strong drilled Dubbo side, the Forbes boys didn’t give up, with only 3 tries scored against them in the second half. The Under 17’s side lost to Dubbo Blues 43-12 at full time. The boys played really well, especially in the second half and didn’t give up.
