Mayor Highly Commended At Minister’s Award For Women In Local Government
Forbes Shire Council Mayor, Phyllis Miller OAM received a Highly Commended Award for Elected Representative for Rural/Regional NSW. The awards are in their 12th year and highlight the contribution women make to the communities in which they serve.
Last week in the NSW Parliament the role women have played and play each day in local government was celebrated. “A special congratulations must go to Cr. Phyllis Miller OAM, Mayor of Forbes, for receiving the Highly Commended Award for Elected Representative for Rural/Regional NSW,” said Phil Donato, Member for Orange. Now in its 12th year The Ministers’ Awards for Women in Local Government celebrate the contribution of women to local government in NSW. In addition to recognising the significant contribution of award winners, the awards aim to encourage more women to take on leadership roles in local government in NSW. The awards also highlight the significant contribution these women make in their local communities. “I was pleased to see so many of our councillors from the Orange electorate (Orange, Cabonne, Parkes and Forbes) along with senior managerial staff, nominated for these awards make the trip to Sydney,” continued Phil Donato, Member for Orange. MAYORAL NOTES Can I begin by thanking everyone for their kind words and congratulations regarding the surprise award I received last week for Highly Commended in the Elected Representative from a Rural or Regional Council. I believe strongly in maintaining gender balance in all levels of government, and I encourage the up-and-coming young girls in our community to step up when their time comes. Last Friday I attended the Black Tie & Boots Rural Aid Ball in Sydney with staff from Council. It was a great chance to showcase our wonderful area to the city folk and remind them that our community, along with many others in the state, are still suffering the impact of the drought. How good was the footy on the weekend? It was a shame our boys peaked a little too early and couldn’t pull off a win. Forbes celebrated 100 years of Rugby League and many old faces were in town again. This week John Barilaro, Deputy Premier, announced an additional $300 million in drought relief funding. This includes $70 million in transport subsidies, $50 million to

Sharon Barber enjoying reading The Van Apfel Girls Are Gone by Felicty McLean as part of the One Library One Book program.
Keeping Our Doctors NSW Minister for Health and Minister for Medical Research, Brad Hazzard, stated there would be no changes to the services available at both the Forbes and Parkes Hospitals. At a Joint Organisation Meeting in Sydney last week Mr Hazzard stated the services currently available in these two hospitals will remain as is, despite the recent rumours. The message was reaffirmed at the Country Mayors Meeting on Friday 31st May in which Parkes Shire Mayor, Ken Keith OAM asked the question, with the same response from the minister. “I want to assure the residents of Forbes and Parkes that we will continue to advo-
cate on our communities behalf to ensure there are no losses of services or staff,” says Forbes Shire Council Mayor, Phyllis Miller OAM. “We have had confirmation from Minister Hazzard that our two hospitals will continue to operate as they are.” A shortage of doctors in remote and regional centres is leaving some Australians without access to basic medical services. “The two towns continue to work with State and Federal Governments to ensure the doctor numbers remain,” says Mayor Miller. “As a rural community we are entitled to medical facilities and services the same as our city counterparts have.”

One Library One Book
Felicity McLean’s book The Van Apfel Girls Are Gone has been chosen for an innovative program in the Central West that takes the traditional book club concept to the next level. Named One Library One Book, the program aims to have everyone in the region read and discuss the same book. Central West Libraries will distribute 200 copies of The Van Apfel Girls Are Gone across the Central West Libraries footprint – Blayney, Cabonne, Cowra, Forbes and Orange. These copies have been added to the catalogues of the Library’s branches with the rest distributed throughout regional towns for the community to take, read and pass on. Author Felicity McLean will be a guest speaker at the Orange Readers and Writers Festival on Saturday 3rd August at the Hotel Canobolas to talk about her book. Felicity will also be attending local libraries to meet with readers in the first week of August to discuss the book with audiences. “I’m thrilled The Van Apfel Girls Are Gone has been chosen for the One Library, One Book initiative,” Felicity said. “It’s a fantastic program, in a special part of the world, and I’m grateful to everyone involved for encouraging reading throughout the community,” she said. Central West Libraries Manager Jan Richards encouraged residents to read The Van Apfel Girls are Gone and pass it on to a friend or colleague. “The One Library, One Book program takes the idea of a book club and expands it to cover an entire region,” Jan said. “The book is blackly comic, sharply observed and wonderfully endearing. We think it will resonate with the community and reflect connections our library service has with local organisations,” continued Jan. “We are thrilled to bring this book to readers of the Central West. It is also available via ebook and audiobook through Central West Libraries,” she said. It is hoped One Library One Book will be widely embraced on social media with readers of The Van Apfel Girls Are Gone posting discussions about the book and photos of themselves with the book on the Facebook page https://www.facebook. com/CentralWestLibraries and #onelibraryonebook.

Dry Season Makes For Tough Times Tough is the word Lake Cargelligo grain grower Andrew McFadyen is using to describe the current seasonal conditions across much of New South Wales’ grain growing regions. He said reasonable rain was needed in the next three to four weeks to give winter crops a fighting chance after a dry summer and autumn. “Grain growers are a resilient group, but the current situation is testing everyone in the agricultural sector, including regional communities,” Mr McFadyen said. “In seasons like this, it is really important to remember we are all in this together and it’s always rained. It will turn around this time too.” “In the Lake Cargelligo region, the past 18 months have been incredibly dry, and we are now at a point where we need rain in the next three to four weeks to give winter crops a chance, or in some cases to get winter crops in the ground.” At Forbes, GRDC Northern Panel member Tony Hamilton said the season had been “very patchy” with reduced canola plantings, very little chickpea planted and some irrigation water available to carry over. “Irrigators are definitely disillusioned. But the planting decision window could extend from mid-June to July if the price outlook is good and we get some rain,” Mr Hamilton said. At Wyalong, grower and GRDC Northern Panel member Roger Bolte said it was a similar situation despite 70mm in late March giving growers hope for a great autumn start to the season. “We had another 50mm in early May and that helped set up some growers across this area, but the conditions vary significantly through this region,” he said. “Wheat and barley are the main crops this season at the expense of canola and legumes. Canola could be back as much as 90% this year across this district. A small area of chickpeas and lupins will really round out what’s in the ground here.”

Jemalong Wool Weekly Market Update 21,787 bales were on offer this week, the lowest weekly quantity in 12 months. The small offering may have had a negative impact, as some exporters may not have been confident about being able to fill orders. The limited number of good style wools with favourable additional measurements were highly sought after, these wools recorded minimal change for the series. Lesser style lots and those carrying poor additional measurements lost 3050 cents, pushing the MPGs down by 20-40 cents. The NRI lost 26 cents, closing the week at 1,883. The crossbred sector also tracked downward but not as steeply as the merinos, prices generally fell by 5-10 cents. 30.0 micron however managed a small increase for the week, the only quoted MPG to record positive movement for the series. The cardings also lost further ground this week and are now 571 cents, from the record high set in September last year. Next week will see 29,989 bales put before the trade, with Fremantle back-in after a week’s recess. Source: AWEX

One focus of the CWA is to assist and support women and children in country areas. The branch’s attention was drawn to the issue of children who visit the Forbes Women’s Refuge who may not have many personal items with them as it is emergency accommodation for women facing some form of domestic crisis and need to leave home quickly. To make the children feel more “at home” and safe, the CWA Evening Branch provide pyjamas for children up to the age of 14. A pair of pyjamas may not be a lot but when you have little or nothing and have had to leave the comfort of home quickly without much, it can be comforting to have something that can be kept and taken with them when they move to longer term accommodation. It gives the children something of their own. Another focus of the CWA is to encourage friendship and broaden members’ cultural knowledge and experiences. At the May meeting some of those recently experienced cultural events by members were discussed. Just a few of them included joining an archaeological dig just outside Forbes in a dry creek bed and quarry where fossilised remains of small water born creatures called Triobites were unearthed by a group of researchers from the Sydney Mu-

Young People And Exam Stress
Young people face many life challenges, one of them being school, and particularly exam periods. These can be stressful. It is important to note, however, that stress is different to anxiety. Many young people are able to manage stressful life events and stressful periods in their life without experiencing a mental illness. Current statistics show that: • 75% of mental health difficulties first onset is before the age of 25. • Anxiety disorders first onset is predominantly younger in age, under 16 years old. When a young person is supported by their school and family to work through times of difficulty, this can build resilience. A supportive school and family environment provides information and resources that help young people feel in control, and help young people build a range of strategies that support them to do the things they want to do, even in times of stress and difficulty. Headspace Senior Clinical Advisor Nick Duigan advises those in need to go to the headspace website www.headspace.org.au for Centre details, as well as factsheets and resources for young people and their families and friends.

Country Arts Support Program Now Open Arts OutWest is encouraging local groups to apply for the 2020 round of Country Arts Support Program funding. The State Government’s annual Country Arts Support Program (CASP) provides small grants of up to $3,000 to arts and community organisations in regional NSW to run their own local arts projects. Applications for 2020 funding close Monday 29 July 2019. “CASP funds are a valuable way to kick start exciting local, on-the-ground arts projects,” Arts OutWest executive director Tracey Callinan said, “This funding program is about giving regional people access to a diverse range of arts activities that are made for and by the local community.” Projects could include workshops, arts activities as part of community festivals or events, artist-in-residence programs, public art and design projects, performances, community seminars and forums and exhibitions. The funding is open to all incorporated associations, not just those focused on the arts. Unincorporated groups or collectives of artists are allowed to find a local organisation to auspice their funding. Likewise if an individual artist has a project in mind they can team up with a local group. There were six projects funded in the Central West region through CASP in 2019: a performance by the Allegri Singers; a mural at Bathurst Seymour Centre; a sketchbook library in Forbes; a youth drama program in Condobolin; and creative poetry workshops in schools in Orange. You can read more about these projects under ‘news’ at artsoutwest.org.au To apply for the funding groups must discuss their project with Arts OutWest before submitting an online application. Can-Assist Golf Weekend
The annual Can-Assist 4-person Ambrose Charity Day was held on Saturday with a field of 76 players participating. Funds raised will contribute to the community work done by the Forbes Can-Assist Group. There is a long list of winners, but the major winners were: • Scratch – B Hodges, D Bayley, S Betland, J Rousell with a score of 61. • Handicap – J Grierson, C Simmons, S Sykes, J Hitchen – 51 ¾. • Bradman – B Drabsch, B Shields, C Bratton, E Coombs – 64 1/8. • There were NTP’s on all par-3’s and other prizes. Prizes were scattered across a wide array of players. Formal recognition will be made to the sponsors, but hearty thanks to them for their contribution. And big thanks go to Beryl Roberts for her work on the checking of the score cards and collating the results, to the Can-Assist committee for their catering work and to the greens staff. Sunday’s Stableford Medley comp was won by Jill Cripps with 36 points, on count back from runner-up Richard Smith. There

was no ball sweep. The NTP’s both went to Bess Shields. Monday also had a Stableford Medley, this time won by Michael Mood with 34 points. There was no ball sweep. Again the same player snared both NTP’s, with Mike Woods the recipient. A group of players travelled to Nelson Bays Golf Club for the Annual Water Wonderland 36-hole event, which this year was played in good weather. Over 120 players participated, representing clubs from the Central Coast and Sydney areas. Digit McAuliffe was the only Forbes player to feature in the prizes, winning the Saturday A-Grade winner with 38 points. Of note was the win by Peter Tilden for the Saturday B-Grade with 41 points. The Lachlan Valley Pennants and Championships, are on this Sunday at West Wyalong. This is the premier event for Lachlan Valley District Golf, with Pennants (teams of 6) and Individual Championships contested in the same event. Good luck to all our guys. The Ladies golfers have been successful in obtaining a defibrillator machine for placement at the golf course. All players, both men and women, are invited and encouraged to attend the Golfie Hotel on Wednesday 26 June at approximately 2pm, where a demonstration and training on the use of the machine will be conducted. Week four of the Winter 3’s competition threw up a surprising but welcome voucher winner. Somm managed a nett 24 to streak the field, and no doubt benefits from some ‘inside assistance’. The balls went to: Somm, A Watts, R Taylor, M Sutcliffe, S Kirkman and A Tucker. Saturday 15 June is an 18-hole Stroke event, sponsored by Country Mile Motor Inn. Sunday 16 June is a Stableford Medley at home, while the LVDGA Pennants and Champs will be held at West Wyalong. By Short Putt
Week Ending Saturday 8th June 2019 Everyone was well rugged up for Tuesday’s competition in the frost. The numbers were down due to the cold weather. We are glad to welcome two new faces to our club. Sandy Hepburn and Denny Smith on only their second Tuesday, won two games each. A mighty effort considering they have never played before. We had our June birthday lunch at the bowling club after our Tuesday’s game. John MacCullagh, Barry White, Tony Thomson and Jennifer Job celebrated the day with a large cake. We would also like to congratulate Lorna Field on her 90th birthday, only 10 more years until you get a message from the Queen Lorna. We pass on our condolences to our popular member Robin Pols on the loss of her sister recently. Our thoughts are with you. The winners of three games for Golf Croquet were Kevin Rubie, Dorelle Scott, Neville Spry and Lyn Simmonds. There were only twenty two players for our Saturday games which were played on very damp courts. Thankfully there was no frost and it was a very calm morning with no breeze. Five players won their three games, John Browne, John Cole, Jill Rubie, Barry White and Neville Spry. Members are advised and reminded that defibrillator training is to be held on Wednesday June 26th at 9:45 am in the Forbes Sport and Recreation club.
