Official Rural Aid Ambassador Visits Forbes
Selina Win Pe is one amazing woman who has so much to offer the struggling Forbes community as they currently tackle the worst drought on record. Selina is one of the survivors of the infamous Lindt Café Siege in Sydney in 2014. Since the siege Selina has battled Post Traumatic Stress Disorder for 4.5 years. Selina wanted to find a way of giving back to the Australians who have helped and supported her since the siege. It was in early March of this year that Selina decided to jump in the car and leave Sydney, and see the effects of the NSW drought first hand that she had heard about through the media. After her travels she contacted the CEO of Rural Aid Australia Charles Alder and wanted to know how she could help.
Selina then identified with the help of Charles, two programs that she would get behind. They include: • The Buy a Bale Program • The Gift of Music Program Selina is now an Official Rural Aid Ambassador and travels the state listening to the communities struggling through the drought. While she was in Forbes she met with Mayor Phyllis Miller and kindly delivered and donated over 150 bottles of water to Nell’s Pantry 4 Farmers at St John’s Anglican Church. Selina is looking forward to returning to Forbes in the near future to speak at a Rotary Club event. On 1st June Selina launched a new website www.selinawinpe.com.au which shows all her travels around the state.

Local Community News MAYORAL NOTES You may have heard the horrible news this week of the vandalism to one of our most loved sculptures by the Lake. If anyone knows anything please report it to the Police. It is terrible to have to do this, but we will put cameras up around areas like this to catch culprits in action if necessary. We do not want to waste valuable time and money on fixing things that shouldn’t need fixing! This week I had the chance to meet up with Selina Win Pe, Lindt Café siege survivor, and take her on a tour of Nell’s Pantry. She is such an amazing woman and has made a personal pledge to raise $1 million dollars to assist drought affected communities. Nell’s Pantry is doing a great service for our community by providing much needed supplies to the struggling farming families in our district. They continue to accept donations of food and supplies, and I encourage you to help where you can. They are open Tuesdays 1-3.30pm. This week I have been in Roma for the Australian Livestock Markets Association Annual Saleyards Expo. It was amazing to

Meningococcal Cases Could Rise With Shifting Seasons: The Western NSW Local Health District (WNSWLHD) is urging people to be alert to lesser known signs of meningococcal disease with zero cases already reported in the area this year and the peak period for the disease still more than a month away. Meningococcal disease can occur at any time of year but cases normally start to increase towards the end of flu season when people’s immune systems are weaker from viruses. Last year WNSWLHD reported one case of meningococcal disease. It is a rare but serious bacterial infection that can cause death within hours so the more symptoms people know about, the better. Most cases occur in infants, young children, teenagers and young adults, although people of any age can be affected. New Lions District Governor Peter Bright and Lion Club member Elaine Bright.
New Lions District Governor To Foster Service With Pride
Forbes Lion Peter Bright will take over as District Governor of District 201 N4 at the Annual Changeover event being held on Saturday 20 August, 2019, at the Forbes Services Memorial Club. Forbes Mayor Phyllis Miller will attend the event along with around 60 Lions members. The appointment follows 15 months of intensive training, culminating in a week-long event in Milan, Italy from 5-9th July, where around 800 District Governors from around the world were officially sworn in. Peter will take over the role from immediate Past District Governor Gavan Ellis, and aims to build on the Lions presence in the region to ensure they can continue sup-
porting the community. “I want to make sure we can continue to help our communities through tough times, and I’m keen to involve younger people in the idea of voluntary community service,” Peter said. He already has a strong track record. Peter and his wife, Elaine, have been active Lions since joining in 2006, when the Forbes and District Club was established. In 13 years, Peter has twice served as Club President, and has led many projects that have made a difference in the community. Peter is committed to spreading the message that kindness matters, and working
Friday 26 July 2019 Page 5 with and involving young people in community service. He has been involved in the annual Youth of the Year Quest, bringing the State Final to Forbes in 2017, and he formed the first Leos club in Forbes at the Forbes High School. In 2017, Peter received the International Presidents Award for his work with the Forbes Flood Relief efforts, during which the club assisted local families with a variety of Australian Lions Foundation vouchers including food, fuel, stock feed and fencing. He is quick to point out it was a team effort. “Of course, it was an honour to receive the award, but it reflected on the whole club, not just me,” said Peter. When he takes over as District Governor, he will lead a membership of around 1,000 Lions in 48 clubs across Central, Northern, and Southern NSW. District activities include responding to community needs during disaster events, and regular activities such as the Youth of The Year Quest, Peace Poster Competition, and fundraising for the Lions Foundation to support Childhood Cancer Research, the Save Sight Institute, and many other causes. “I strongly encourage anyone who enjoys serving others and being part of a community to talk to us and find out what we’re about,” said Peter. He describes being a Lions member as the most rewarding time of his life. “I’ll never forget a young mum stopping me in the street after the Forbes and District Lions Club had had Hearing Loops’ installed in the three primary schools in Forbes. She’d just come from the primary school and had seen her hearing-impaired son participate in the classroom for the first time. She asked me if she could give me a hug, and after she explained why we were both in tears,” he said. If you are thinking about joining the Lions Club, contact your local Lions Club, or go to the District Lions Website where you will find contact details and a membership application form.
Junior Members Join Forbes CWA Forbes CWA are proud to have junior members. One of the junior members, Olivia Hunt, has been busy helping with bags. Her story is below. “I make the hospital bags as part of my Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award which is an award scheme in which you must participate in a sport, learn a new skill, be involved in community service and also go on an expedition including camping and bushwalking,” said Olivia. “I decided to make the hospital bags for my community service component, as my Nana who is the President of the CWA mentioned that they needed more hos-
pital bags at Forbes – sewing is also a keen hobby of mine so I thought it would work very well and it was nice to know I was helping a small community in country NSW. I’ve been making the bags for the past year,” continued Olivia. These bags are very popular at the Forbes Hospital. They are filled with immediate needs by the branch and delivered on a regular basis to the hospital. If anyone of any age feels that they would like to get involved in being part of this and other projects please contact Elaine Bright on 0402 025 888, or speak to one of the CWA members.

Vietnam Veterans Day Vietnam Veterans Day will be held at the Cenotaph in Victoria Park on Sunday 18th August 2019. Some 60,000 Australians served their country in the Vietnam conflict from 1962 – 1975. Australia suffered casualties with 521 deaths and more than 3,000 wounded during this conflict with many more veterans suffering and continue to suffer as a result of their service. As young men and women they lived in a time when draft-dodging was a dirty word and the domino theory was a constant theme. Service of country was never questioned. We must never forget the price that our Vietnam Veterans paid for their service. The bravery, tenacity and sacrifice of the Australian and New Zealand soldiers in the Battle of Long Tan, and the support provided to them by the RAAF are remembered as one of the Vietnam War’s defining moments. Australian casualties at Long Tan were 18 killed and 24 wounded. That victory has come to symbolise Australia’s involvement in the Vietnam War. The commemorations held on Vietnam Veterans Day honour all Australians who served their country during the Vietnam War.

How long have you lived in or around Forbes and what is the best thing about living here? I’ve lived in Forbes for 16 years! Particularly over the last few years I’ve noticed a major boost in the Forbes community, there are so many fantastic events and things to do and see. Where do you work or what do you do currently and what do you enjoy about it? I’ve recently started as a Sales Executive for the Phoenix! I couldn’t ask for a better team to work with. I get to spend my working days doing what I love most; being out and about and talking to people! What is your favourite thing to do when you have free time? Spending time with my little family. I also like going to the gym and drinking way too much coffee. What makes you proud? Seeing my time and effort pay off! I love seeing results; whether it be my own results or my family’s. If you could be an animal which one would you choose and why? A bird! Imagine never having to deal with traffic or potholes in the roads! What is your all-time favourite movie, song and/or book, and why? I’m a sucker for the Harry Potter series. My dad introduced them to me when I was younger, so they’ve become almost sentimental to me. What is on your bucket list? New Zealand is next on my bucket list! Renting a caravan and exploring for a few weeks with my other half, what could be better! What are you really good at? Talking! And I love decorating cakes. I’m the least physically creative person you’ll meet but somehow I can whip up a pretty good cake! Tell us about your best holiday ever? A month long trip to England! I have family around Brighton and it blew my mind how much the environment can change within such a short distance. And trying to pronounce town names in Wales was interesting!
Health Bones Did you know that over 2 million Australians are affected by osteoporosis. Flannery’s Pharmacy is hosting a Health Bones clinic to assess risk factors and measure bone density using a Qualitative Heel Ultrasound. Sarah Hazell, Pharmacist at Flannery’s Pharmacy advises that some people are more at risk of osteoporosis. “There are a number of risk factors including smoking, drinking more than 2 alcoholic drinks per day, lack of exercise, menopause and having a diet lacking in calcium” said Sarah. “The clinic will provide an assessment of personal risk factors affecting bone health and measurement of bone density” said Sarah. Customers will receive a personalised consultation summary and information brochure. Please note that the bone density test requires a bare heel. Pantyhose or stockings should not be worn. The Healthy Bones clinic is being held on Tuesday 13 August at Flannery’s Pharmacy. Cost is $25. Bookings are essential so please call Flannery’s Pharmacy on 68521111 or call in to arrange an appointment.

Great Day At Golf The Saturday comp was a 2-Person Ambrose, generously sponsored by Brine Cure (the local tannery). The good weather ensured good scores among the 48 players. The Scratch winners were D Bayley/J Betland who finished with 63. The pairing of G Webb/B Doyle were declared scratch runners-up with their neat par 72. The handicap winners were P Dawson/T Callaghan, who used their 2.5 handicap to reduce their scratch 63 score to a score of 60.5 nett. Handicap runners-up, on count back, were I Bown/A Callaghan with their 64 ¼. The ball sweep went to 66 nett, going to: 60.5 – Dawson/T Callaghan; 61.75 – Bayley/J Betland; 64.25 – Bown/A Callaghan, Judge/Grallelis; 64.5 – G Webb/ Doyle; 66 – Rhodes/Zannes. The NTP’s went to: 9th – P Cowhan; 18th – G Falvey. In these partnered formats team work is very important, but the occasional individual brilliance can help. Craig Barrett’s chip shot on the 10th was described as wizardry, but he needs work before it can be consistent wizardry.
