Amy Gallagher and John Azzi from Forbes High School in black with Parkes High School students on White Ribbon Cup Day 2019.
Kicking Goals For Respectful Relationships
The annual White Ribbon Cup between Forbes High and Parkes High Schools was held on Monday 29th July at Forbes’ Duncan Sharpe Oval. 2019 is the third year of the carnival which aims to drive home messages about domestic violence, values and personal strength to take a stand. This year, the White Ribbon Cup carnival was expanded to include a girl’s league tag match between the two schools, an invitation to Stage 3 students at Forbes Public and Forbes North Public schools and a Girls Night Out to complement the Boys Night In program that follows the cup match. Forbes High School Deputy Principal, Jason Nottingham said that while the school have held the White Ribbon Cup since its inauguration two years ago, he believes
the results of the match are secondary to the valuable message that the day reinforces with students. “White Ribbon promotes respectful relationships, gender equality and engagement of men in preventing violence against women,” Mr Nottingham said. “Combining this message with a day of sporting activity and the chance to explore a number of positively-themed information stalls has proved an effective vehicle for building students’ understanding of these important values,” continued Mr Nottingham. The girl’s League Tag Cup went to Parkes High School who won 24 - 14 and the Rugby League score was 32 - 12 with Forbes High School claiming the tile for the third year in a row.

MAYORAL NOTES This week I, along with Parkes Shire Mayor, Ken Keith, met with Scott McLachlan, CEO of Western NSW Local Health District, to discuss the services of our hospitals both here in Forbes and Parkes. We discussed the critical need to ensure enough doctors and especially obstetricians are servicing our region. It was a great relief to hear we are all on the same page and we will all be striving to re-instate all services to both hospitals as soon as possible. How fantastic was the ALMA Animal Welfare Award win? It was great to visit the vibrant town of Roma. During the stay we had a field trip to see how a local farm works hand-in-hand with a Coal Seam gas mine. This 4th generation farm breeds Poll Hereford cattle and Santos, the miners, supply their excess water to the farm for irrigation. The water is treated by Santos to reduce the saline levels in the water to make it fit for purpose. I was very sceptical, but when I saw how it was done and how healthy the cattle were I was amazed! We also visited
the Roma saleyards and we think our yards are big, but they take the cake! The yards sell seven to eight thousand cattle each week making them the biggest in Australia. Forbes has a lot of major works coming up with the Lions Park stormwater starting this week. Please be mindful of the signage, it is there to ensure everybody is safe. The Camp Street Bridge work will begin on August 26, and whilst it may be a bit inconvenient the finished result will be amazing. Minister Paul Toole must be applauded for being on the front foot in doing this bridge work, as the bridge does not have the capacity to handle the increase in the size of heavy vehicles currently using this route. Unfortunately I will miss the Races this year but I encourage you all to get your glad rags on and go, you won’t be disappointed! God Bless. Your Mayor Phyllis Miller

Forbes Shire Council Wins ALMA Animal Welfare Award Forbes Shire Council has received the coveted ALMA Animal Welfare Award last week at a presentation in Roma, Queensland. This win is further proof that animal welfare is a critical priority for Forbes Shire Council and the Central West Livestock Exchange (CWLE). The CWLE is a state-of-the-art facility for buying and selling premium quality cattle, sheep and pigs. With 105,000 Cattle and 1,466,900 Sheep throughput at the facility each year and a major driver for the Forbes economy. “I’m very proud of our Council winning this award, but even prouder of the wonderful staff and facility we have at the Central West Livestock Exchange. The livestock exchange serves an important role for our
farming community and we will continue to upgrade and maintain this amazing infrastructure,” says Forbes Shire Council Mayor, Phyllis Miller. Further to external staff training Council has developed and implemented a CWLE induction for all users to the facility which aims to educate and promote responsibilities for all users of the facility. General Manager, Steve Loane, passionately states; “The CWLE is one of the best facilities I have seen in Australia and to ensure we remain competitive we need to ensure those in charge and running the facility are trained accordingly. I am incredibly proud of the staff and their willingness to undertake the training proposed to ensure the CWLE runs like a well-oiled machine.”

EducationWeek 2019 Grants Available For Central West Schools Nationals’ MP and Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack is urging schools to apply for a share in up to $200,000 in funding this Education Week. “All schools in the Central West will be eligible to apply for funding ranging from $1,000 to $20,000 as part of the Liberal and Nationals Government’s $30.2 million Local Schools Community Fund,” Mr McCormack said. “I have written to the Principals of the 131 schools across the Riverina and Central West to encourage them to apply for funding for projects which will make such a tangible difference to students’ education.” “We know that school leaders and their communities are best placed to know what their schools need and the Local Schools Community Fund ensures they can apply for funding for a project which will make the biggest difference to their students’ education needs,” continued Mr McCormack. “This could be anything from a small-scale refurbishment or extension to a classroom, playground equipment and sports facilities to mental health and counselling services, new computer facilities and library resources.” Schools should identify their projects in consultation with their local school community. Before applying for funding, schools are required to notify their approved authority. Applications are to be submitted through
the Department of Education’s Schools HUB portal at www.schools.education.gov. au by 5pm on 30 September. Projects must be completed by the end of 2020. OUR Bloke Daniel “Swanny” Swanston How long have you lived in or around Forbes and what do you like about living here? I was born and raised in Forbes, so 23 years, I enjoy the friendly nature of everyone and how gorgeous a place Forbes is. Where do you work and what do you enjoy most about your work? I work for Forbes Shire Council as a Sewer Plant Operator. The thing I enjoy most about work are the people I work with. What do you do to unwind after work or on weekends? Footy of course both Union and League, Fishing, Camping, walking the dogs and don’t mind a bit of amateur photography too. What are you really good at? I believe I’m really good at being a good bloke and helping others when they need a helping hand. What is your pet hate? When there’s an empty car park and people still park right next to my Clubby. If you could have a super power what would it be and why? Teleportation because then I could skip the long plane rides for holidays. Tell us about your best holiday ever? Most difficult question that’s been asked but I’m going to say my first trip overseas where I ticked off a life long dream of visiting Egypt and more specifically seeing the Pyramids. What makes your day? Coming home from work and seeing how excited the dogs are to see me. Tell us an interesting fact about yourself? Swanston Street in Melbourne is named after a family ancestor.

Croquet News And Results GOLF CROQUET 23RD JULY 2019 We were still down in numbers for our Tuesday game of Golf. Some of the games were close. There were four winners of three games, Bruce Field, Kevin Rubie, Barry White and Mal Smith. In an exciting game, the winner of both our competitions last year Joan Littlejohn, who has had a lean year so far, had two consecutive holes in one. On two of the longest holes the ball went straight through the hoop. Not satisfied with that she did the same coming back in the opposite direction. A terrific and amazing effort Joan! AUSSIE CROQUET 27TH JULY 2019 It was a good start on a perfect day with
29 participants. We welcomed back Veva MacCullagh who graced our courts after a long absence. It was good to see you back Veva. Our August birthday lunch will be held at the Bowling Club on 6th August. Birthdays for August are Jeff Liebich, Geoff Coles and Jane Hanbury. The winners of three games were Joan Littlejohn, John MacCullagh, Bob Murray and Jill Rubie. Congratulations to Joan Littlejohn. This is her first win of three games this year. After winning both competitions last year she seems to have her confidence back, keep up the good work Joan. By Harley Stewart
