And The Winners Are? Forbes Dancing with the Stars Couple no 6, Susan Earl and Hare Laveka, may have been crowned the inaugural winners of the trophy on Saturday night but the real winner on the night was CanAssist. Eight months ago two local women, Terese Gunn and Cassandra Tyack, decided to organise a fundraiser to benefit CanAssist after seeing firsthand the assistance they provide to local cancer patients. Dancing With The Stars Forbes was the chosen theme and the pair were hopeful that they could raise at least $10,000.00. Months of careful planning and coordination saw their dream a reality on Saturday night with nine dance couples, four prominent judges, two entertaining comperes and 353 community members attending and supporting the spectacular event. Once again, the Forbes community has

risen to the challenge and exceeded all fundraising expectations. The ladies were overwhelmed by the generosity of local businesses and the community and became quite emotional when they had well and truly exceeded their original goal. Even though the final total has not been released it is anticipated that it will be more than $30,000. The dance routines performed on the night were of a very high standard and judges had a difficult task to come up with the overall winner with just one point separating 1st and 3rd positions. After their performances, dancers had five minutes to collect as much money as possible with the couple collecting the most money taking out the people’s choice award.

Cup Day for Forbes Toy Library MAYORAL NOTES What a great night Dancing with the Stars of Forbes was! Organisers Terese Gunn and Cassandra Tyack did a wonderful job to organise the event and more than $30,000 was raised for CanAssist with the event a complete sell out! The only downfall of the night is that I’m now off for an MRI for the knee on November 24. The things you do for charity! On Tuesday Centroc hosted a scoping session at Jemalong Regional Education Centre to explore the opportunities for the industry and the areas of policy, regulation, process and governance within Local Government. The focus of discussion was on food, fibre and agriculture to allow scope for innovation beyond primary production and to allow for consideration of the concept of multifunctional farming. Hopefully we will see some great things come out of this. Councillors have been meeting every Monday evening to discuss Fit for the Future and we are trying to incorporate the thinking of all of our community and what our response will be to the report, which we need to submit by next Wednesday. A special meeting will be held on Monday at 5.30pm to finalise our response. I attended the Local Government NSW Board Meeting last Friday and it was the first one since our election. There is a lot going on in Local Government at a state level including the review of the Local Government Act and this as well as a range of other items were discussed at the meeting. After a very busy week I am looking forward to a kick-back on the weekend. Have a great week, stay safe and God bless. Mayor, Cr. Phyllis Miller OAM

This year, the Forbes Toy Library held their annual Melbourne Cup Luncheon at the Forbes Racecourse for a fun afternoon of horses, hats and hilarity. All of the ladies in attendance enjoyed a complementary glass of champagne on the lawn before heading upstairs to the Jockey Club. There the guests sat down for a delicious three course meal, with guest speaker Wendy Muffet – founder of Girra Girra Retreat – entertaining the crowd, engaging them with her accounts of making sour dough bread in Forbes. This year’s theme was “Shimmer and Shine”, so there was a delicate sprinkle of bling over the crowd! Heather Mackinnon won a prize for the best themed outfit, while Muz Easton won Best Headwear and Jackie Wright was awarded Best Dressed. A silent bottle auction unveiled before the big race, providing plenty of laughs. The Forbes Toy Library holds their Melbourne Cup Luncheon as their major fundraiser each year. Fundraising is necessary in order to keep membership costs at a minimum, ensuring that access is available to all. Forbes Toy Library is a not-for-profit organisation run entirely by volunteers who know the importance of play in real life learning. CanAssist, formally known as The Cancer Patient Assistance Fund, was established in 1955 in response to concerns about country cancer patients accessing treatment in Sydney and the lack of suitably priced accommodation. Forbes began the first country branch in NSW in 1956 and provided assistance in a number of ways including transport, home visits, housework and much more. The Country branches grew and became more organised and there are currently fifty two branches in NSW. Forbes CanAssist does not receive any government assistance and relies on fundraising and community support to provide $60,000.00 in support to local cancer patients each year. The funds raised from this event is invaluable to this organisation and will benefit many Forbes cancer patients and their families. By Anita Morrison

QUESTION of the week

What does Remembrance Day mean to you?

IMAGE: Leonie Spencer, Maree Yapp, David Todd and Dee Barter at the Forbes North Public School Spring Fling.

Spring Fling a Huge Success Forbes North Public School held a successful fundraising event on Friday 6th October. Around 85 people attended the Spring Fling Dinner which raised in excess of $3000 which will be used to sustain the school’s Kitchen Program. The Kitchen Garden Program emerged after grant funding was received through the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation, which enabled the school to build the schools kitchen, employ a cook and establish gardens. The Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden program is designed to help children to form positive food habits for life. The program provides inspiration, information, professional learning and support for educational institutions to deliver pleasurable food education. Forbes North Public School was the first school to launch the program and staff have witnessed the positive impact that it has had on students and their families. Children have learned how to grow, harvest, prepare and share food, not only improving their food science knowledge but developing essential social skills. The program also

explores the origins and history of food and highlights the many cultural influences and flavours available. Many of the successful outcomes of the Kitchen Garden Program can be attributed to the dedication and enthusiasm of the program facilitators, firstly with Julie Bourke and now, qualified chef, Tami Montgomery. Their love of cooking is infectious and the children have enjoyed their experiences. Tami and her team of volunteers are constantly cooking a wide variety of products, including relishes and jams, which are then sold to produce revenue to support the now self-funded program. Tami was the driving force behind Friday’s event and was responsible for the delicious menu that attendees enjoyed. Mrs Michele Morley, Assistant Principal at Forbes North, commended Tami’s efforts and was grateful for the support shown by local businesses and the Forbes community in general. Michele would also like to thank the Forbes Golf and Sportsman’s Hotel for being so obliging and helpful with the event. By Anita Morrison

“It is a chance to remember and pay respect to the men and women who died protecting our freedom and rights during the war.” – Susan Hodges

“It is one of the most significant days for all Australians. It gives us time to pause and recognise all of the people who were impacted by the war – not only soldiers but the families left behind. They all made sacrifices so we could enjoy the high quality of life today.” – Jacqueline Flannery

No Divide Beyond the Range Beyond the Range, Central NSW Council’s (Centroc) major regional health workforce recruitment campaign was launched on Wednesday 4 November at Jemalong Regional Education Centre. Fiona Nash, Federal Minister for Rural Health led the launch of the destination and lifestyle focused health workforce recruitment campaign, which is driven at a community level by Centroc. Beyond the Range is a destination and lifestyle focused regional health workforce recruitment campaign driven at the community level by local government. It includes a website, a 30 page Council Toolkit, and a Facebook page, and brings together a diverse range of organisations from tourism, arts, universities and government agencies among others. The Forbes Jemalong Regional Education Centre was an ideal setting for the launch being an excellent example of a regional council and community’s proactive approach to improving health infrastructure and attracting crucial health workforce. “This is about destination marketing and providing a quality service to people thinking about relocating to Central West NSW,” said Centroc Executive Officer Jenny Bennet. “That’s why organisations such as Central NSW Tourism and Arts Out West also feature on the Beyond the Range website

– to illustrate just how culturally rich and diverse the region is.” In 2012, a report from the NSW Rural Doctors Network found that 88% of rural towns among Central NSW Councils were considered vulnerable to the catastrophic loss of GP workforce. According to Centroc, the number of rural GP proceduralists in regional NSW is declining at an alarming rate, and that all indications are that the rural medical workforce numbers will not improve unless more action is taken. “We can’t afford to keep hiding our heads in the sand when it comes to regional health workforce,” said Chair of Centroc and Mayor of Cowra Shire, Bill West.

Forbes Flautist

David Shaw, the grandson of Judy and the late Stan Ellis was interested in music from a very young age, starting piano lessons at the age of five years old. Later on in Primary School at Kinross Wolaroi, David began playing the flute. He became a very accomplished pianist and accompanist, but the love of the flute was taking over. After excelling in flute studies in the HSC, David continued his studies at the Australian National University in Canberra, where he was awarded a first class Honours Degree. The next step in David’s studies was a full scholarship to the selective Australian Academy in Melbourne. Here he has been working on a career as a professional musician playing the flute. David was recently accepted as a member of the touring Australian Youth Orchestra to tour Germany and China in 2016. Following this tour, David plans to continue his studies in Europe. David will present an evening of flute music in the Forbes Town Hall at 6pm on Tuesday 24 November. This is an opportunity to hear David playing and talking about his flute experience before setting off on his big adventure. By Judith Ellis.

RURAL ROUNDUP Post-Harvest Grain Protection – Don’t Let Your Profits Be Eaten Question:

When is a weevil not a weevil?

Answer:

When it is a borer or a beetle. There are five main insect pests of stored grain. It is worth identifying the problem insect you may have to ensure you use the correct grain treatment as not all insects are controlled by the various products. Resistance is very prevalent, particularly with regard to the lesser grain borer, which commonly infests stored grain. In fact, of the six grain protectants available on the market, two commonly used ones have zero control on Lesser Grain Borer,

and a further two have widespread resistance, and may or may not be effective. Likewise the Rice weevil is not controlled by one of the options and the Saw toothed grain beetle has widespread resistance to two of the grain treatment chemicals. There are only two grain protectants available that can claim full control of all grain insects including the Lesser Grain Borer. It is worth obtaining professional advice from an agronomist or Rural Retailer if you are in doubt about which chemical will be effective. On close inspection, the Lesser Grain Borer can be easily distinguished from the Rice Weevil and also from the other beetles that can infest grain.

“The Lesser Grain Borer has only two body segments and a more ‘rectangle’ shaped body.

Grain Protectant vs Grain Disinfectant Grain protectants should not be used to control existing populations of insects in grain storages, but rather to ‘protect’ against future infestations. When grain is already infested, disinfectants can be used that usually require sealed grain storage for fumigation. Of the three commonly used grain disinfectant products, one has developed widespread resistance, so again it is worth obtaining professional advice if in doubt.

RURAL ROUNDUP The First Line of Defence… The first line of defence against infestation of grain storages is hygiene. This means cleaning away any old grain, bags or any objects that can shelter insects from around the storage area. Washing down the walls of storage area is also very important before new grain is added to the storage. Utilizing diatomaceous Earth (DE) powder also has an important role to play. DE is silica based abrasive powder that physically disrupts the cuticle of the insect upon contact, killing the insect. It acts as a physical barrier. DE can be applied by blowing the powder into the storage structure whilst the walls are still wet from the wash down process. Treating the first few tonnes and the last few tonnes of grain augured into the storage with DE offers protection on the bottom and the top of the grain storage. Given the costs involved from fallow to harvest to get a tonne of grain to the silo, it is worth ensuring your profits won’t be eaten.

Jemalong Wool Weekly Market Update Week ending: 26 November 2015

It was a short-lived rally in the wool market as prices retreated this week. Weighing on the market was a strengthening Australian dollar which rose almost half a cent to 71.55 US cents. Movements across the regions were inconsistent during the series, although by the end of the week there was a reasonable consensus. The medium/broad sector (18 through to 23) was generally 20 cents cheaper, but was as much as 40 cents cheaper in Sydney. The superfine category (17 microns) fared somewhat better, easing by only 5 to 10 cents. Regardless of micron, the better types were the main focus for buyers with heavy discounts applying to those types outside of order specifications, especially those with a high CVH. In the other catalogues, merino Skirtings found good support and close at similar levels to the previous sale. Cross breds eased by 10 to 15 cents, as did the Merino Carding Indicators. 49,566 bales are expected next week, the largest sale in seven months.

Ray White Shine A Light on Giving It’s been a big few weeks for Ray White Rural Forbes! They held yet another successful auction day on Friday 30 October with three properties being on offer. They were “JEML Park”, “Pine Flash” and Lot 511 Pullabooka. There was a great atmosphere in the auction room on the day, with a total of 17 bidders registered. Two of the properties sold on the day; Pine Flash sold for $340,000 to a local Forbes buyer, and JEML Park sold for $1,300,000 to a couple from Glenn Innes. Ian Simpson from Ray White Rural Forbes said the auction day had great results with satisfied vendors. The purchasers of JEML Park, Jim and Lorraine Nugent said the auction day was great, with friendly people who were willing to chat with them about the properties on offer. They also commented on how well Ray White Rural Forbes marketed the property in such an enticing way. “Angus McLeod (auctioneer) was great and he never let the crowd lose interest,” said Jim, thanking the team at Ray White Rural Forbes for the great job that Ian, Ned and Stacey all did on the day. The Nugents are looking forward to moving to Forbes. The ball keeps rolling with Ray White Rural holding their next lot of auctions on 16

December at the Forbes Services Memorial Club. This will be the first time that the use of online auctions will be available to regional Australia, an event property buyers won’t want to miss. The Ray White Rural Forbes team also attended the Australian National Field Days 2015 – the first time the team have decided to showcase their business at the event. In the lead up Ray White Rural Forbes gave away free tickets with Alice Muffett being one of the lucky winners. The event was a fantastic opportunity for the team to showcase their business and represent the entire Ray White brand at such a high profile event. The team recently joined up with Forbes North Primary School with a school partnership program. After purchasing a Yellow Ray White Bike, a raffle was held for the bike with a gold coin donation the only cost to enter. After a number of weeks, showing off the bike outside the Ray White office, riding it up and down the main street to promote it, even taking it along to the Australian National Field Days, the lucky winner of the yellow bike was Forbes’ Karen Delaney. From gold coin donations only, a fantastic $650 was raised in the raffle which was

donated to Forbes North Primary School. This Christmas, Ray White will continue its popular tradition of giving with the return of a little Ray of giving. The inspiring Christmas campaign will see Ray White Rural Forbes partner with Ronald McDonald House in Orange to help disadvantaged children who may need a little extra light in their festive season. Every year, Australians are asked to donate a gift for a deserving child and drop it into one of their participating Ray White offices. “The gift drive is a really simple way to help put a smile on the face of children and families who may need some extra cheer at this time of year,” said Ian Simpson. “It’s a really simple way to put a smile on the face of a young child who might otherwise go without this Christmas,” he said, adding that just a small gift can make the biggest difference to families who are struggling at an expensive time of year. All you need to do is wrap up your present, drop it under the tree at 88a Lachlan Street and inform the team if the gift is for a boy or a girl as well as the suitable age group. The team will ensure the gift is delivered to a disadvantaged child to help put a smile on their face this Christmas. By Rosi Broom

What Is Residential Aged Care? Residential aged care is for older people who for a variety of reasons can no longer live at home. Those reasons can include illness, disability, bereavement, an emergency, the changing needs of their carer, family or friends, or because it is no longer possible to manage at home without help. Living or staying in an aged care home is all about making sure that you receive the care that you need, whether you just need help with day to day tasks, assistance with personal care, or 24-hour nursing care. Aged care homes are owned and operated by people or organisations that have the approval of the Australian Government to care for you. Residential aged care can be offered as either permanent or short-term care. Shortterm care in an aged care home is called residential respite care. If you or the person you care for needs less care than that offered by aged care homes you may wish to consider independent living units or retirement villages. These residential communities offer a range of services for independent older people, and are regulated by state and territory governments. When entering an aged care facility or Retirement Village there is usually a Contract and Rules and other documents that you may need assistance with. Should you need advice on this or any other legal matter, feel free to contact me or one of our solicitors or call into our office for an appointment. Next time we will talk about the five steps involved in getting into aged care facilities. Matthews Williams Solicitors and Conveyancers

It’s the Little Things We Do! Elvis Festival Everyone has seen the great things the Lions Club can achieve around Forbes and surrounding districts, so it’s no surprise to hear they’ve been quite busy lately getting things done. They’ve just finished building a carport over the “Ute in the Park”, a WB Holden Ute that was donated to Lion’s Park by the Club in 2012. “It’s been a long term project for our club and the idea was to showcase The Utes in the Paddock out at Ootha, one of our tourist attractions in the Forbes area,” said Lion’s member Peter Bright. “The carport will provide protection over the Ute and ensure that it is an attraction for years to come.” A few months ago the Lions Club also identified the need for a Handy Bar Entry assist device at the Patient Transport Unit in Forbes. It is a device that locks into the door catch and provides extra support as patients enter and exit the vehicle. The Condobolin Show Society contacted the Forbes Lions Club a few days before their show to see if the Lions Club could help out with the show gate. Of course, the Lions Club said “yes we can” Then the Drum Muster needed a group to help out with their Forbes program. The

Lions Club again said “yes we can” getting another job done without a fuss. So, do you have any “little things” that need doing? The Forbes Lions Club want you to ask them, or even attend their meetings with your ideas if you like. You are invited to join the Lions Club and help to implement your own project. The Forbes Lions Club meets on the second and fourth Tuesdays at the Vandenberg Hotel at 6:30pm for a 7pm start.

Diggers Swimmers Do Well in Gosford On Saturday 31st October eighteen “elite” swimmers, from the Forbes Diggers Swimming Club, made their way to Gosford to represent Forbes in the annual Four Ways meet with Nelsons Bay, Cobar and, of course host club, Gosford. Diggers Swimming Clubs began after World War I. The races were handicapped to allow all returned soldiers to compete and the handicap was determined by the injuries or permanent disabilities of each competitor. The Forbes club was started by returned soldier Thomas E Drane whose descendants have maintained the tradition and are still integral members of the club today. Originally the weekly event was for men only but now is a family affair. The 30m & 50m events are still handicapped and swimmers must swim as close as possible to their nominated time. The Four Way Swim commenced as the Five Way Swim until the unfortunate closure of the Malibar Club recently. The meet was an opportunity for the men who had served together to keep in contact and maintain the special bonds they had formed during the war. Although it has developed into a social occasion it is still a time to remember and pay respect to the men and women who made

great sacrifices for the freedoms we enjoy today. The Forbes swimmers competed well with Harry Hayes bringing home the bacon with a win in the 50m Open scratch event with a time of 30.16 along with Mick Prior swimming 0.06 outside of his time for the 30m event. The 10 man 50m relay saw the Forbes team claim 3rd swimming 3.03 faster than their nominated time. Forbes were announced as the hosts for the 2016 Meeting and look forward to welcoming visitors

and their guests to Forbes in October next year. Forbes Diggers meet every Sunday morning at the town pool with events commencing at 10.00am and people of all ages are welcome to attend. The committee are now preparing for the community Australia Day Swim followed by the Western District AIF Carnival and, their major community charity fundraiser, the Pup Cup Family Day on the 28th February. Junior Cricket Thank Local Sponsors The Forbes Junior Cricket Committee took time from their busy schedules to thank their local sponsors at a cheque presentation at the Forbes Services Memorial Club late last week. The Forbes Services Club presented the committee with a cheque as major sponsor for the junior competition. Club manager, David Fitzgerald, was pleased to be supporting the community organisation and sees it as an opportunity to promote Sun Safety through the purchase of wide brim hats and long sleeve shirts. David was also happy to see junior cricket back on track in Forbes and was glad that the club was able to assist. Along with the major sponsor, representatives of teams sponsors were also present including, Nathan Murphy from Gunn’s

Menswear, Matt Hazell from Hazell & Field Chartered Accounts, Selwyn Bale from Bernardi’s Marketplace and Ian Bown from Sportspower. Sportspower have also donated two cricket bats which will be used at a Trivia Night hosted by both Junior and Senior Cricket later in the season. Committee spokesperson, Wayne O’Neill, expressed his gratitude for the generous support of local businesses and commended the hard working committee on their efforts over the past three years. Three years ago junior cricket in both Forbes and Parkes was in real danger of folding until Tim Mackay took on the role of President. He formed a partnership with Parkes junior cricket which has been very successful with registrations tripling during this period of time. By Anita Morrison
