NSW Governor Pays A Visit To Forbes Forbes and Parkes have played host to His Excellency General The Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Ret’d), Governor of New South Wales and Mrs Hurley, from the 17th to 19th November, as part of a program that sees His Excellency visit numerous townships throughout the state. After touching down at Parkes Regional airport on Tuesday morning, the Governor and Mrs Hurley travelled to Forbes where, accompanied by Mayor Phyllis Miller OAM, they toured the Forbes Livestock Exchange. A luncheon was held in Wheogo Park where the Governor and Mrs Hurley were guests of honour. Mayor Phyllis Miller OAM raised her glass for a speech, thanking His Excellency for the visit and welcoming both he and Mrs Hurley back in the future. The Governor also spoke, explaining the purpose of the visits. “We have a program where we do a number of country visits during the year, visiting two or three towns for

three to four days. We spend a day and a night in each town to allow us to get good feel for the community,” said the Governor. “I go back and speak to the politicians, tell them my thoughts on what I experienced.” After lunch, the Vice Regal couple attended Red Bend Catholic College, touring the facilities and speaking to students and staff whilst also witnessing drama, dance and music performances, followed by an afternoon tea put on by hospitality students. “We’re grateful for the chance to showcase our school,” said Principal Michael Flanagan. “It’s a great opportunity to show the different elements we have as an independent school. The kids are all so excited to meet the Governor.” After leaving the college, His Excellency and Mrs Hurley attended a few other functions in Forbes, including a private dinner, before heading to Parkes on Wednesday. MAYORAL NOTES On Tuesday we welcomed His Excellency General The Honourable David Hurley, Governor of New South Wales to Forbes. Since becoming Governor last year, His Excellency and his wife, Mrs Linda Hurley, have been visiting a range of areas across NSW. Included in his visit to Forbes was a tour of the Central West Livestock Exchange, Red Bend Catholic College and on Wednesday morning a visit to House With No Steps. It really was wonderful to welcome His Excellency and Mrs Hurley to our town and they were very impressed with how vibrant our Shire is. We have now submitted our feedback on the IPART Report to the Department of Premier and Cabinet. We had a special meeting on Monday afternoon to decide on the response and Council resolved to stand alone in the merger preferences section. After receiving feedback from the community, and the majority of that was to stand alone, we decided our response would have to be that we stand alone. We also had the opportunity in the submission to say what we thought about the IPART report and articulate the flaws we found within the report. All of our neighbouring Councils also made submissions to stand alone. Now we just have to wait and see what happens next. It was Council’s Picnic Day last Friday and it is great to see Council staff having a fun day. They do an enormous amount of good work for Forbes residents and we as Councillors have the privilege of seeing that work on a daily basis. Their delivery

on Council resolutions is second to none. A big thank you to all of the staff at Forbes Shire Council for the work they do. We recently had our Community Safety Precinct Meeting with the police and you will be pleased to know that car theft is down at the moment. Please keep remembering though to lock your car doors whether it’s in the driveway or out the front of a shop you are in. I would also like to make mention of the Lachlan Area Command and give them credit for the excellent job they do. Thursday was our November Council meeting and I will talk more about outcomes from the meeting next week. Have a great week, stay safe and God bless. Mayor, Cr. Phyllis Miller OAM

The Why Leave Town Gift Card system is a community based program aiming to help support and grow local communities and works in much the same way a Westfield voucher works. The gift card can be purchased in one store and used in any of the participating businesses in town. The concept is that the network of businesses can join together to keep money inside the community and grow local businesses. The cards can only be purchased and redeemed within the Forbes community, guaranteeing money stays local, helping to generate revenue for individual businesses and benefiting the entire town by encouraging people to shop locally.

Keep Cool in Summer

IMAGE: Genevieve Benita, Isabelle Benita, Sarah West and Rona Ashcroft at the 50th Anniversary celebrations.

Celebrating 50 Years Forbes High School held their 50 Year Celebrations over the weekend and many exstudents and teachers travelled to Forbes to take part. Forbes High School, originally located in Browne Street, was officially opened at 18 Wyndham Avenue on the 13th November 1965 by the then Deputy Premier and Minister for Education and Science , the Honourable C B Cutler ED MLA. This year marked the 50th Anniversary and the school celebrated the occasion with a Cocktail Party at the Forbes Inn on Saturday night and morning tea and a tour of the school on the Sunday. Everyone who attended the cocktail party thoroughly enjoyed the night and there was a great mix of ex-students, teachers and current staff. High School Principal, Charles Dwyer welcomed guests and invited them to attend the school tour the following day. Wendy Fraser (nee McFarland) was the first school captain at the new High School and spoke of her memories at Forbes High and of her achievements since leaving school. Brianna Cotterill, graduating student in

2014, currently studying music at Wollongong University travelled home to perform and delighted attendees with her easy listening selection. The live entertainment continued thanks to the Forbes Inn and the Hodge family. The school tour and morning tea the following day proved very popular with more than ninety people touring the school and inspecting the facilities including the commercial kitchen, industrial arts rooms, language lab, science labs and school hall. Many were amazed at the standard of the facilities and how technology has improved learning experiences. Students who attended the school in the early years were in ore of the trees, gardens and lawn areas, and compared it to the baroness of the site when they first moved there in 1965. Morning tea in the library was an opportunity to further reminisce with school friends and teachers and the school magazines on display proved most popular. By Anita Morrison

Searching for Local Musicians Local man James Irvine is making every effort to promote local performers through his involvement with community radio station 2LVR. James volunteers for the station as a radio host and is working hard to develop a new segment – “Unchartered”. Unchartered is a segment designed to showcase music from unknown artists, promoting and encouraging local talent. At first the response to the new segment was limited, but after further advertising campaigns the program is gaining momentum. James’ playlist is increasing with very positive results. James uses the air time as a vehicle to promote local and Central West artists. He invites them into the studio to perform their music live and chat with the host. This medium is such a great way for the musicians to connect with their audience in a personal way. Although live performances and interviews are preferred, there is the opportunity to make alternate arrangements. Musicians can simply forward a copy of their original pieces of music and conduct interviews via the phone. James already has a number of local artists on the playlist, including Chelsea Turner, Maddi Collits and popular local band House

of Tribes, but he is constantly on the lookout for more. James is hoping to increase the variety of music he is able to play and cater to the tastes of a broader audience. If you are interested or know of any local talents who would benefit from this type of exposure, want more information or would like to arrange a meeting, please contact 2LVR on 6852 4288 or call James Irvine on 0400 054 381. Unchartered airs on 2LVR between 8pm and 11pm on Wednesdays. Tune in to hear the freshest local talent and support artists in the Central West. By Anita Morrison

The IPART Battle

Forbes Council Shire have reaffirmed their position to stand alone in response to the IPART assessment of its Fit for the Future proposal at a special meeting this week. The Council’s decision was backed up by Member for Orange Andrew Gee, who says that he fully supports their stance to stand alone. “Forbes Shire Council has voted unanimously to continue to stand alone, and I have made it clear from the start, I will be backing them to the hilt,” Mr Gee said. “While I accept that people have differing views on the issue, and I, and we as a community certainly need to respect those views, the overwhelming feedback I’ve had at both the community meeting earlier this month, and through a phone survey conducted by Council, is that the communities of Forbes would rather stand alone.” “Being a local member is about backing your local communities through thick and thin, and while there is no doubt that this is a very tough battle, I’ll be in there fighting for the Forbes community until this thing is done.” Mayor Phyllis OAM said the response from the community at the public meeting and the telephone survey showed 72% wanted to stand alone.

1 in 7 Australians over 40 have COPD! COPD is a medical term that stands for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, which is a progressive long term disease of the lungs which causes shortness of breath, a disabling condition that limits airflow in the lungs. “Chronic” means it won’t go away. “Obstructive” means limiting air flow. “Pulmonary” means in the lungs. Many people are unaware that they may have COPD. It is Australia’s fifth leading cause of death. In 2012, 5,923 people died from the disease. Between 2012 and 2013 about 59,700 Australians aged 55 and over. That’s a rate of 1,052 per 100,000 population aged 55 and over. Men’s hospitalisation rates declined between 2004 and 2012, while women’s rates, which has always been lower than men’s, were relatively stable. Over 750,000 Australians have COPD at a stage where breathlessness may be present and it is affecting their daily lives. Of these, 50% do not have a GP’s diagnosis of COPD and so don’t take the correct steps to slow down the progress of the disease. If you are 35 years or older, are breathless or have a cough that won’t go away and you have a history of smoking or occupational exposure to dust, gas or fumes, you should be screened for COPD. If you answer yes to any of the questions below, you may be at risk: • Are you an ex-smoker? • Have you lived in places that are dusty, smoky or heavily polluted? • Do you feel you are out of breath more easily than others your age? • Do you have a persistent cough? • Do you regularly cough up phlegm or mucus? • Do you experience frequent chest infections? During November, Flannery’s and Life Pharmacies are conducting free COPD screening – no appointment necessary. Call in and see our Pharmacists or Pharmacy Nurses for a free test.

Say No To Violence Against Women White Ribbon commenced in 2003 and is Australia’s only national male led campaign to end men’s violence against women. It is the vision of White Ribbon Day that all women live in safety, free from all forms of men’s violence. It’s making women’s safety a man’s issue too. The Forbes Domestic Violence Committee decided to take a proactive approach to this issue three years ago and organised the White Ribbon Day March. The March gained a lot of support from the community and was a very successful event. Last year ultra-marathon runner Kirrily Dear used the march as the finishing point for her Run Against Violence, a 860km run over 12 days. The run aimed to get everyone talking about steps they can take to end domestic violence. “In Australia, one in four children is exposed to domestic violence,” says White Ribbon Australia CEO Libby Davies.

“Over 12 months, on average, one woman is killed every week in Australia as a result of intimate partner violence. Alarmingly, this figure is rising. A woman is most likely to be killed by her current or former male partner in her own home.” “We all like to think that all of us, our family, our friends, colleagues and neighbours, are safe at home. Most of us believe this is a basic human right and would be outraged if it were taken from us. But sadly, for many of us, this is not always the case,” Libby said. The White Ribbon Day March will be held on Wednesday 25th November, commencing at 10am in Spring Street, travel down Lachlan Street, into Court Street for the official ceremonies in Victoria Park. Michele Harmer from Binaal Billa would have more information on 1800 700 218. By Anita Morrison

Health Smart Care For Your Feet This Summer Are you prone to cracked feet caused by thongs, sandals, open-toed shoes or walking barefoot? Now that the warm weather has finally arrived, that could mean pain for you. “Thongs in particular can be very bad for your feet,” says Brendan Brown from the Australian Podiatry Association (NSW & ACT). “They provide no support, and can lead to sprains, breaks, and twisted feet and ankles.” Use a good foot balm daily to keep cracked feet at bay and rotate your footwear. Try to avoid wearing open shoes all the time when you’re out. For serious skin cracks that call for professional treatment, a podiatrist will clear away calloused and dead skin, advise on the best skin care and check for structural or biomechanical problems that might be causing the dry and cracked heels or pads. Make sure to visit your podiatrist if your condition becomes exacerbated or painful. You do not want infection to set in. Podiatrist Patrick Raftery has been visiting Forbes since 2000 and can take care of all kinds of podiatry needs. Patrick started his own practise in Orange in 1987 and has been travelling to different towns across the region ever since. His services range from treatment for thick

fungal nails, to children’s problems, flat feet, sore knees and ankles as well as walking/ gait assessments. Patrick can offer advice on shoes, help with custom-made orthotics, as well as specialist treatments and assessments for diabetics. Visiting Forbes for two days each month, all visits are by appointment. Contact the Orange office on 6362 1423 today to schedule your next session!

Over the years the family has purchased other stores. 1995 saw a partnership in Canobolas Auto One and selling out in 1999. The year 2000 saw the opening of Roylances’ Automotive & Industrial in Port Melbourne servicing the mining and quarry sectors. The Melbourne branch is going strong and they have seen a move to larger premises in Tullamarine in August 2015. 2008 saw the Roylance brand open a branch in Cobar NSW. After servicing the Cobar region for over 30 years, the family opted to open a branch to service not only the mining community but the local workshops and community. Roylance’s Melbourne and Cobar are continuing strong with the efforts of all five staff involved.

Forbes Shire Council congratulates Roylances Auto One on the 60th Anniversary of successful business operations in Forbes.

Last year saw big changes for Roylance’s. After 11 years of being independent, the family made the decision to re-join the Auto One group. This has been a positive move for the Forbes store. It has created a one stop destination in the Automotive Industry for trade and retail products within the Forbes and surrounding communities. The Forbes store hosts 11 employees, all of who are locals.

QUESTION of the week Have you or someone you know set themselves a challenge in support of Movember?

locally first!

OURGal PROUDLY BROUGHT TO YOU BY:

Nikki Patten

“Yes, I am growing the mo (doing pretty well from the look of it) because I think it is important to create awareness for mens health issues and in particular bowel cancer. I am also supporting Movember games at Forbes High School.” - Bradley Lemon

“Yes and no. I have always got a mo so there was no challenge there. I happily support Movember but think that everyone’s (men and women) health issues are important. They all need to be recognised and everyone should undergo regular health checks as early detection is the key”. - Richard Claney

What do you love about Forbes? The biggest asset is the lake. It’s always a hive of activity with walkers, skiers and everyone you meet there is friendly. What are your hobbies? I love sport and play netball, basketball and touch. I am passionate about all children having access to a loving, happy and caring environment, stimulating learning opportunities and education. Who inspires you? Pinky Mckay or Petrea King. Pinky Mckay is an author of gentle parenting advice books. Petrea is the CEO and founder of the Quest for Life Foundation and inspires cancer sufferers. Describe your dream holiday: As the children get older I would like to trek through Nepal, and possibly climb Mount Everest as a family. What is the biggest change you would like to see in the world? Peace, peace, peace – starting with treating your neighbours with respect and kindness with the hope that it will cause a ripple effect.

IMAGE: Nikki Patten was listed on the Hidden Treasures Honour Roll this year.

“No I didn’t set myself a challenge this year and even though I have not contributed to Movember as an individual I make donations to a variety of charities throughout the year. Men’s Health is extremely important as many men don’t have their health checked as often as they should. I will definitely support Movember in the future.” - Michael James

Protection Against Parvo We have recently seen a spike in Parvovirus cases in dogs in Forbes and the surrounding areas. Parvovirus strips the lining of the gut causing diarrhoea, vomiting, blood poisoning and death. Treatment is costly and it’s easily prevented with vaccination. Puppies need a vet vaccine at 6-8 weeks of age and then a final vaccination at 12 weeks which gives 1 year protection. Dogs over 12 weeks require a single, annual vaccination for protection. Vet vaccines provide a strong immunity much quicker than Parvac, non-vet vaccines. What will you see if your dog has parvo? It will go off its food, have diarrhoea and vomiting. Will it hurt to take my pup fishing where there are no other dogs? YES!! A dog can spread parvo before it is sick. People can carry it on their shoes. Parvo is then able to infect another dog up to 7 years later, which your puppy can pick up from the ground. We have seen many puppies infected this way. My dog had a parvac vaccine – is it protected? MAYBE. Puppies need THREE PARVAC vaccines to be protected for 1 year at 8, 12, 16 weeks. Unvaccinated adults need 2 vaccines 4 weeks apart. If you left the vaccine in the sun or it was warm when you gave it you can’t guarantee it worked.

A study released by Safe Work Australia has shown that home renovation is the largest non-occupational cause of malignant mesothelioma – one of the deadly diseases caused by asbestos. “Renovating homes is a very popular pastime and saves money, but unless people take adequate precautions it can be potentially very dangerous with the risk of contracting a potentially fatal asbestos-related disease,” said Juliet Duffy, Principal of Regional Enviroscience – a hazardous materials consultant based in Dubbo. According to one estimate, asbestos may be present in as many as one third of all homes throughout Australia. Regional Enviroscience specialises in identification, testing, monitoring and management of asbestos materials and is currently working with Workcover to undertake ‘Mr Fluffy’ loose fill asbestos testing in regional NSW. If you are concerned that you may have asbestos in your home, their NATA accredited laboratory offers a reply paid DIY as-

bestos testing service. The kit, which explains how to safely collect an asbestos sample can be downloaded from enviroscience.com.au or call 1300 372 436. Six sources of asbestos exposure many people aren’t commonly aware of: 1. Proximity to non-compliant demolition and construction sites, factories and asbestos mines; 2. DIY renovations, especially houses built before the mid-1980s, anything made from bonded asbestos cement (including flat and corrugated fibro sheeting, water, drainage and flue pipes, roofing shingles and guttering); 3. Washing clothes worn by people exposed to asbestos; 4. Debris from bushfires, cyclones, floods and other natural disasters; 5. Rubbish dumps that fail to handle asbestos waste according to requirements; 6. Old and disused parks, especially children’s playgrounds that have fallen into disrepair.

Prestigious Award for Young Musician Local Forbes musician, Jake Ellison who is a guitarist and vocalist from the popular local band House of Tribes, has received quite a prestigious award. Named as Highly Commended in the 2015 Australian Children’s Music Foundation National Songwriting Competition for his song “Underdog”, Jake and his supporters are thrilled with the result. “I’m really stoked about it and it puts me up with the top composers in the country for my age group,” Jake said. It was Jake’s music teacher, Don Ruttan who suggested Jake enter the competition. “There were only two days left to enter. Mr Ruttan was about to delete the email. We

entered anyway thinking, you never know where it might get you.” Jake says that Underdog, which is featured on House of Tribes recent debut album Paint it Red, is a song inspired by some of the struggles faced in day to day life. It is a touching and inspiring melody featuring the kind of beautiful acoustics and rising harmonies that give you goosebumps. “I wrote it about bullying. It’s about trying to stay strong and keep with it,” said Jake. Order a copy of Paint it Red by sending your order to HouseOfTribes@outlook. com.au or listen to House of Tribes on YouTube. Be Entertained Born in Orange, NSW, David Shaw has been learning a musical instrument since the age of five. He started with the piano, and three years later began the flute as a secondary instrument. Throughout school, he utilised both of these instruments to involve himself in almost every ensemble he could, including Jazz Band, Orchestra and Marching Band. His love for both was more or less equal right up until his decision to study flute at the Australian National University (ANU). 2012 and 2013 saw David’s most productive years yet, winning the Margaret Henderson Scholarship and the Margaret Smiles Best Instrumentalist prize at the end of 2012, and reaching the finals of the Australian Flute Festival Open Competition in 2013. He capped off four years of study at ANU

with first-class honours and 2014 saw him undergo his first year at the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM). Performing alongside and under the tutelage of some of Australia’s top musicians, as well as having the opportunity to work with international performers has been a highlight of David’s time at ANAM to date. 2014 and 2015 has already provided opportunities to perform with Tasmania Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra Victoria, Melbourne Chamber Orchestra and the Canberra Camerata Orchestra. Select performances have seen David play the whole family of flutes, with a particular focus on the Alto flute in 2015. He was also a finalist in the ANAM Concerto Competition in 2015, which has seen him offered opportunities to perform with state orchestras in 2016.

NSW Rugby 7s Selection

It has long been a dream for local girl Darcie Morrison to make a National team and this week she is one step closer to her goal being selected in the NSW Rugby 7’s squad. Darcie began her journey last year when she trialled for the Australian Institute of Sport sports draft and was identified for Rugby 7’s and Combat Sports. After attending training camps for both sports Darcie chose Rugby 7’s and began training with the NSW Development squad. Training included a two hour training session once a week in Sydney and a strict strength and conditioning program to be completed twice a day on her own. Her dedication and commitment to the sport saw her invited to play with the Australian Team against Japan. Darcie competed at the Australian University Games with the Bathurst CSU team who were the eventual winners of the competition. She was awarded players player for the series and was also named in the Merit Selection Squad along with two of her team mates. Last weekend Darcie competed with the Sydney University team at Campbelltown and was named in the NSW Rugby 7 team which will now compete at the National Competition to be held in Wagga on the 5th & 6th of December. This carnival will be a platform for selectors to view promising athletes for the Australian Squad. By Anita Morrison

BOWLS The Minor pairs between Ray “Monty” Montgomery & Johnny Kennedy verses Peter Corliss & Viv Russell was played last Saturday. What a torrid battle it was. Monty and John ended up with a 25:19 win. MIXED PAIRS AND TRIPLES: notes by Leisa Burton. We had one game of mixed Pairs on Saturday, Anne Walker and Don Craft played Lindy Cannon and Jarrod Andrews. Lindy and Jarrod had a comfortable 22-8 win. On Sunday Leisa Burton, Wayne Burton and Anne Walker played Graham Rutherford, Ric Stewart and Alison Cutcliffe. Reggie’s team won by two shots 20-18 in a close fought game. Although they led all the way, the spectators were on the edge of their seats during the game. Thank you to those who watched and showed fantastic interest in the mixed games. Last Wednesday was another interesting day on the green. Gunna Williams and Johnny Gorton were a couple of points ahead all the way, ending up with a 14:9 win from Scott McKellar and Barry Wright. In the other game Dale Barker led for Alf Davies with Rob Priest as skip. Dale and Alf were on fire to take a 20:9 win from Peter Greenhalgh, Ray Dunstan and Peter Mackay. Rooster played his first game of singles on Thursday and at one stage was leading Scott McKellar 14:5. Scott ended up winning the match by 22:17. On Sunday morning the competition continued in ideal conditions. Results for the morning saw Don Hodson defeat Brian Joliffe. The marker was Ray Drabsch. John Kennedy defeated Rodney Howarth their marker was John Stringer. Cliff Nelson defeated Debbie Brown and their marker was John Bentick. There were three games of triples. Pat Hodson, John Baass and Alan Phillips defeated John Dietrich, Tony Bratton and Les Cannon. Next door was John Lasker, Kevin Hodge and Mitch Hodge who defeated Warren Hodge, Glenn Ruge and Barry Anderson. Finally John Williams, Grant Lambert and Russell Hodge defeated Scott McKellar, Kerry Smith and Alan Smith. It was good competition as there were five players with resting touchers. They were Warrick Neville, Don Hodson, John Lasker, John Baass and Kerry Smith. The winners for the day were Don Hodson and Ray Drabsch. The runners up were Warrick Neville, Glen Ruge and Barry Anderson. As this Sunday is President’s Day it would help if your Buck Bentick matches could be played during the week.
