Forbes Says No To Domestic Violence The Forbes community banded together on Wednesday 25 November to say no to domestic violence for the White Ribbon Day March. 100 white balloons tied to wrists floated and bobbed through the street and the captains of Forbes High School carried a banner with a slogan supporting victims of domestic violence. Behind them was an army of Forbes’ school students, community groups and community members walking together to put an end to domestic violence. As the marchers arrived at Victoria Park, the piper stopped playing and the traditional Welcome to Country was performed before an introduction to the day, and a speech from Mayor Phyllis Miller. “Forbes is still ranked in the top 20 for recorded domestic violence related assault incidents by Local Government Area,” Mayor

Miller said. “Domestic violence is not just a problem in our area though. To date in 2015 there whave been 78 women killed by violence in Australia with 1 in 4 Australian women experiencing physical or sexual violence from a current or former partner.” “Children living in a relationship with abusive behaviour are considered to be at risk of harm, either directly by being abused or indirectly by witnessing the abuse of their parent or carer.” “By being here today and getting involved in the White Ribbon Day March, you are all helping to change these statistics and by working together we can make a difference. Don’t be afraid to stand up. Together we can put a stop to violence against women.” By Rosi Broom

LETTERS to the Editor

MAYORAL NOTES On Wednesday the community gathered together to make their pledge against violence against women. Unfortunately Forbes is ranked number 12 in the state for recorded domestic violence related assault incidents by Local Government Area. Just last month there were 34 domestic related incidents and 8 reported domestic violence assaults in the Forbes sector of the Lachlan Area Command. Those who participated in the event on Wednesday can help change these statistics as by working together we can make a difference and help put a stop to violence against women. Yesterday we attended the 25th anniversary of the volunteer group at the Forbes Railway Arts and Crafts Visitor Information Centre. What a great job they do at the centre and thanks to their hard work and dedication our visitors are provided with a very welcoming and friendly service when they need information while in Forbes. Nominations are now open for our Forbes Citizen of the Year and Junior Citizen of the Year, which will be presented at Australia Day celebrations on January 26. Visit Council’s administration office for a nomination form. How good was it to see Veronica Rebellato and Anne Tildsley on national TV competing in Channel 7’s new show, Aussie Barbecue Heroes, last Wednesday night. It was a bit scary for the girls but they really did Forbes proud. I think it was a little overwhelming for them but the two-time National BBQ Champions did a great job. Congratulations ladies and well done to

have been selected in the first place. At our November Council meeting last Thursday, Council personally thanked the women who were recognised on the Hidden Treasures Honour Roll. Out of the 106 women added to the roll, seven of those were from Forbes, which is such a great honour. Those women are Peg Clifton, Julie Herridge, Heather Mann, Nikki Patten, Narelle Shaw, Sue Uphill and Maree Yapp. Congratulations once again to you all, the value of your work and contribution to our community is second to none. Have a great week, stay safe and God bless. Mayor, Cr. Phyllis Miller OAM

Dear Editor, I just thought it was about time we congratulated your beautiful town. We stop over for a few days every time we are in transit from Queensland to South Australia. Years back, we had a motorhome but recently changed to a caravan, all of which are fully self-contained. Your hospitality is second to none, your lakeside camping area is beautiful and we always find the locals so friendly. Wherever possible, we spend on petrol and food supplies when we arrive. Thank you and your town folk for making this the best stop-over in Australia. We look forward to our next visit – a good break in our journey. Thanking you once more, Ken & Val Bossom Hervey Bay, Queensland

Congratulations to Forbes High School’s NAIDOC Debating Team who came Runners Up in the State Competition at Sydney Parliament House earlier this month. While they were in Sydney, the students enjoyed a cruise around Sydney Harbour and a dinner on Cockatoo Island. Well done! With temperatures rising it is important to be aware of the damage the sun can do. Remember to Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek and Slide when out and about. You can check the UV level for your area by using the SunSmart UV Alert app or checking the Bureau of Meteorology Website. Have a safe summer!

Citizen of the Year Award nominations are now open in Forbes Shire providing the perfect opportunity to recognise the hard work of volunteers within the community. Nominations are open until 5pm Monday 18 January, with forms available at Council’s administration office at 2 Court Street, or online at www. forbes.nsw.gov.au Did you know eating Christmas cake can support the community? QUESTION of the week

With just four weeks until Christmas, have you started your shopping yet and what would you like Santa to bring you this year?

“I would have to say no – all I have is a few stocking fillers but nothing major. I would love a swimming pool for Christmas but don’t like my chances.” – Kristy Hartwig

IMAGE: Amy Shine (judge), Helen Pitt (judge), Kelly Yoon and Ken Walton (judge).

Kelly Yoon Named Youth of the Year Lions Youth of the Year is designed to encourage, foster and develop leadership in conjunction with other citizenship qualities in our youth, at the age when they are about to enter the fields of employment or higher education. It provides students with the incentive to pay greater attention to the general qualities, so vital in developing our youths into first class citizens. The qualities sought, apart from academic attainment are those of leadership, personality, sportsmanship, public speaking and good citizenship. Six students applied for the awards for their chance to be the overall Lions Youth of the Year or the Public Speaking Award, scrutinised by a panel of distinguished judges including Amy Shine (Forbes PreSchool Director), Mrs Helen Pitt(retired teacher) and Ken Walton(National Bank representative). Students firstly, had to submit an application, similar to what they would if applying for a job or university, which was assessed by the judges. Successful applicants were then interviewed by the judging panel and

given a score for both the written application and interview which made up 80% of their overall total. Participants were given the opportunity to prepare a 5 minute speech to be presented at the awards presentation on a topic of their choice and the final element of the awards was two impromptu questions which they were allocated 2 minutes to answer. Forbes High School, Parkes High School and Red Bend Catholic College each had two students representing and all contestants performed exceptionally well. Students were supported by family, friends and their teachers who were all very proud of their efforts. The competition was extremely tight and a delighted Kelly Yoon from Parkes High School was announced the winner of both the Public Speaking and Overall Youth of the Year Award at the conclusion of the judging.

Council Honours Hidden Treasures Carols By Candlelight Mayor Phyllis Miller and Forbes Shire Council councillors hosted afternoon tea at the November Council meeting to personally thank the women who were this year named as Hidden Treasures for their contributions to the community. This year 106 women were recognised with 7 of those women residing in Forbes. Heather Mann, Julie Herridge, Maree Yapp, Narelle Shaw, Nikki Patten, Peg Clifton and Sue Uphill are all worthy of these accolades and have already received official certificates and a limited edition booklet from local member Andrew Gee. The 2015 Hidden Treasures were announced on the 10th October this year by the NSW Department of Primary Industries Rural Women’s network. Since it was first launched in 2010, 700 rural women have been named on the honour roll. The Hidden Treasures is not an award but an opportunity to pay tribute to the rural women who donate their time and energy to help others. It is important to celebrate and recognise the valuable volunteer work women do in NSW rural, regional and remote communities. Nominating rural women is a great way to celebrate those ladies who give so much of their time to improve communities and

neighbourhoods. You can nominate a friend, family member, colleague, community worker – any rural woman who you believe makes your community a better place to live. To nominate a Hidden Treasures volunteer you simply need to complete the nomination form with a short story about why your nominee is worthy. All women nominated will be included in the Honour Roll. Nominations for the 2016 Honour Roll will open 9 May. By Anita Morrison

Forbes’ Carols By Candlelight will be quite different to previous years, with a change in the format of how the carols will be presented to make the public more involved. An MC will announce carol items from the beginning of the night at 7pm. Forbes Shire Council will provide bunting to divide Victoria Park into sections. This will allow families to sit together in front of the Rotunda and stage using their own fold-up chairs and picnic rugs. The inflatable movie screen will also be there so the crowd can sing along to the lyrics. Carols start at 7pm and the park lights up with glow candles at 8pm, with carolling continuing until 9pm. Santa, accompanied by his elves, will be seated in a special Santa nook where people can bring their own camera for a photo and the Lions Club will provide a BBQ. Carols By Candlelight is a community event organised by the Forbes Town and District Band, and is supported by a number of community groups as well as Forbes Shire Council. Come along to Victoria Park from 7pm on Sunday 6 December and enjoy the new format with a festive feel.

A Muddy Weekend

On Saturday 22nd November many of our local ladies made their way to Canberra to challenge themselves and raise valuable funds for the Jane McGrath Foundation, Breast Cancer Awareness and Treatment Charity, in the 2015 Miss Muddy. Miss Muddy is a female only obstacle and mud festival with a course of up to 5km for participants aged 13 years and over. It includes mud, colour, climbing crawling, slipping and sliding. This is an untimed event which is all about women supporting women in a fun and non-threatening environment. There are no expectations or judgements just lots of fun. Three of our local ladies, Carmen Walsh, Tracey Reid and Kathy Ward, were amongst the many women who took the challenge last weekend. This was the first event of this type for the three ladies who thoroughly enjoyed the experience and are claiming it to be a warm up for their next challenge the Dubbo mud run in April next year. Eventually the trio would like to complete the Tough Mudder NSW event which was also held over the weekend at Glenworth Valley on the Central Coast. Forbes and Parkes were well represented at this challenge with at least two teams

from Parkes and a combined Forbes, Bathurst and Gunnedah team of 9 all completing the course. Tough Mudder is an 10-20km obstacle course which promotes teamwork and comradery while raising funds for the Soldier On Foundation. Soldier On is about Australians coming together to show their support for our physically and psychologically wounded and raise money to help improve the lives of thousands of soldiers who have recently returned from the conflicts after 1990. Only two competition rounds are left before the hotly contested finals series will begin for the 2015 Forbes Touch season. It was evident that teams were out to improve their current position in their respective divisions, to ensure the best run through to the main games in a couple of weeks’ time. A big shout out to Andy Hardy this week for helping us with referees duties. Andy took it upon himself last week to shadow referee with a couple of Year 8 boys to help them with decision making and generally being more confident with the whistle in hand. As you are all aware, the juniors are the future of this game and to remain successful, refereeing duties are part of our competition. Any questions can be directed to the Forbes Touch Facebook page. Medal of Medallists goes to Denis Culley GOLF

On Saturday the golfers competed in a Stroke event over two Divisions. This was also the competition round to determine the ‘Medal of Medallists’, whereby each of the winners of Monthly Medals through the year was eligible to be crowned “the Best of the Best”. In the “Medal of Medallists’, 27 of the 32 eligible medallists participated. Denis Culley relished the warmer temperatures, last winning medal in May, and played well under his handicap to record a nett 66. The best eligible A-Grader was Peter Dawson on nett 73, alongside Steve Betland. In the A Division, Phil Maher was the winner when he played within his handicap to score a nett 71. Runner-Up was David Rhodes, with72. The B Division went to Denis Culley, with 66 nett, from a determined Andrew McDonald with 69. Denis played well under his handicap. Andrew was fortunate to scrape in on countback from Gary Collitts and Stuart French. Nearest the pins were: 9th – Brian Monaghan; 18th – Brian Everest. They were the only two ‘Brians’ in the field, not counting Fred Collie. The ball sweep went to 73 nett, being awarded to those above plus: 69 – G Collitts, S French, 70 – R Morris, A Callaghan, 71 – R Baker, 72 – J Clarke, B Everest, 73 – P Dawson, S Betland, A Grierson, N McMillan, S Kirkman, P Duke. Sunday’s Stableford Medley was a quiet day, with many persons wishing to rest and recover from the weather influences. Richard Smith took the winners circle with 45 points. The NTP’s went to: 9th – Ron Morris; 18th – Brian Monaghan. The Vets played an 18-hole event at Condobolin on 19 November, the last 18-hole event for the year. The Winners list for the day‘s competition includes: A-Grade: 1st – J Haley (Fbs) 44 Points; 2nd – D Rogers (Pks) 41; 3rd – B Toms (Cdo) 41 B-Grade: 1st – G Griffiths (Cdo) 43; 2nd – A Luff (Cwa) 40; 3rd F Donahue (Fbs) 40.

B-Grade: 1st – T Broadley(Cdo) 45; 2nd – L Archer (Pks) 42; 3rd – B Menzies (Cdo) 42. NTP’s went to: A-grade – D Rodgers; BGrade – F Donohue; C-Grade – R Glover. The Coles/Miller Shield, which accrues points across the year’s 18-holes Comps went to: Parkes (2170 points) from Forbes (2146), Grenfell (1578), W/Wyalong (1467), Cowra (1342) and Condobolin (1038). Maybe 2016 will see a different result. This was also the Inaugural Lachlan Valley Districts Vets Golf Medal, sponsored by NSW Veteran Golfers Association. This is played for only between eligible players, those being the grade winners from the first six 18-hole events of the year. The winner was Len Archer (Pks) with 42 points. He pipped Ralph Baker (Fbs) on count back from his 42 points. The next game is a 12-hole event at Parkes. We return to a gathering time of 12:30 pm for a 1:00 pm start. It could be hot again so take plenty of drink.

Golf Pro Tip Myth busted! We have all heard it before ‘KEEP YOUR HEAD DOWN’. I’m sorry to tell you but it is one of the most unproductive things you can tell a golfer. Let’s think about it for a second, when we tell someone to keep their head down what do they usually do? Tuck their chin on their chest! This causes many problems including a restricted shoulder turn and a rigid golf swing. Try it yourself and you will soon see! Yes, we must keep our head still but, when you miss or ‘top’ the ball that’s not because you lifted your head it is because your chest has come up to where it was causing the club to not stay on path and hit the ball. This is usually caused by the golfer trying to ‘scoop’ the ball in the air. So next time rather than telling someone to keep your head down, tell them keep their head still and focus on hitting down on the back of the golf ball. This is a much more effective and productive way for someone to improve. Happy Golfing! Daniel
