Schools Spectacular 2015 Forbes High School were represented at the 2015 Schools Spectacular by twelve students who performed as part of the combined dance group at the Qantas Credit Union Arena last week end. The journey commenced early in the year with video auditions being sent to the producers of the Schools Spectacular. The item was choreographed by the students under the watchful eye of Mrs Emily Bass and Miss Emma Northam, two dedicated teachers who also organised and accompanied students to the rehearsals and performances. For students in regional and rural areas, routines had to be learnt from online videos
and two rehearsals with students from Orange High and Dubbo Senior Campus prior to leaving for Sydney last week. Preparations for the three live performances culminated last week with 3600 students from every corner of the state coming together for the first time to rehearse. Rehearsals were held at various locations throughout Sydney on the Wednesday and again on Thursday at the Qantas Credit Union Arena. It is amazing how the whole show comes together in such a short period time with children ranging in age from 5 to 18 years.

A Big Difference MAYORAL NOTES Nominations are now open for our Forbes Citizen of the Year and Junior Citizen of the Year, which will be presented at Australia Day celebrations on January 26. Visit Council’s administration office for a nomination form. Vanfest is on this weekend and you won’t be able to avoid it unless you leave town but we are all looking forward to welcoming many visitors young and perhaps not so young to our beautiful town. A big thank you to the Clifton’s for making Vanfest possible and creating an extraordinary music festival that has national recognition. Also on Saturday we can participate in the Forbes Business Chamber Christmas Carnival there will be road closures in the centre of town and all businesses will be open celebrating the festive spirit. On Sunday night, Carols by Candlelight is being hosted by the Forbes and District Town Band in Victoria Park from 7:00 pm and all are welcome. I had a guided tour of the Golf Course recently. What a wonderful job Justin Clarke is doing with the greens and fairways. Congratulations to the Forbes Golfers Association and the golfing community it is a testament to what team work can do. Have a great week, stay safe and God bless. Mayor, Cr. Phyllis Miller OAM
This Christmas, after buying for family and friends, consider one more gift to support the work of Red Cross. “One more gift can be a daily phone call to check on the welfare of an older or isolated person living alone,” says actress and Red Cross Ambassador, Kate Ritchie. “Christmas is not always a joyful occasion and many will be lonely or separated from their families over the festive season.” “One more gift to Red Cross can be a hot meal for a homeless teenager on Christmas Eve, clean drinking water for a young child in Myanmar or support for a community trying to rebuild after a fire or flood.” Popular TV presenter Chris Bath wants us to “give the gift of clean water this Christmas.” As a Red Cross Ambassador, Chris has seen first-hand how Red Cross is helping to supply clean drinking water and hand washing lessons for families in remote Timor-Leste. “To witness something that genuinely changes people’s lives has been priceless,” says Chris. The well-known TV host says something as simple as a pipeline to carry clean water from a mountain spring to a community tap can create a culture of better hygiene for the whole village. “It is a long-term solution, not just a BandAid fix,” says Chris. To give one more gift, call 1800 811 700 or donate online at www.redcross.org.au

QUESTION of the week Christmas traditions, such as putting up decorations after the 1st December, are very important to many people. Do you or your family maintain any Christmas traditions?
IMAGE: Anne and Veronica are our BBQ Champions.
Our Very Own Aussie BBQ Heroes 2014 National Barbeque Champions and local ladies, Veronica Rebellato and Ann Tildsley may not have made the finals of the new reality show, Aussie Barbeque Heroes, but they have done themselves, their families and their community proud with their efforts on the Seven Network television series. The National Barbeque Championships president, Chris Roylance, was approached by the network to submit teams to audition for the show earlier in the year. A number of teams were submitted and the process began in May and continued until filming commenced in September. Veronica and Ann cooked every day for three months, experimenting with different flavours and cooking techniques. Every stage was documented with photos and recipes which was all part of the competition process. Finally, nine teams of two were chosen and accepted the challenge to test their cooking skills against one another with contestants hailing from all around Australia. Three teams compete each week in the heats and
every dish they produce must possess the three elements the judges, Robert Murphy, Jess Pryles and Ben O’Donoghue are looking for; flavour, presentation and technique. The girls featured in the first episode and met the two timed challenges, Prawn Supremacy and Gang-Lamb Style, head on. The ladies had to prepare and cook the two different types of meat and present them to the three judges complete with a side. They had a full pantry of fresh and packaged ingredients to choose from and Veronica and Ann were impressed with the quality of the ingredients. Although a little disappointed that they did not make it through the first heat, the ladies have really enjoyed the experience and have made some great friendships with the other contestants. Aussie Barbeque Heroes will continue on Wednesday night on PRIME7 commencing at 7pm and viewers can follow the progress of the teams and the eventual naming of the 2015 True Barbeque Hero. By Anita Morrison
“Our family do not stick to any hard traditions, although we usually put up our decoration in the first week of December. We probably thought about it more when our children were young, we have a granddaughter now so I think things will change next year when she is a bit older.” – Richard Nixon
“When I was growing up we always had a real Christmas tree which we would get from the back of the farm Christmas Eve and decorate with our grandparents. As we all got older and moved away, this tradition stopped. My husband’s father always set a rabbit trap to catch Santa’s boot when he came to leave presents at Christmas.” – Maree Hodges
“Traditionally I put our decorations up after the 1st of December and I don’t take them down until after the New Year. If think if you go to the effort of putting the decorations up then you should be able to enjoy them for as long as you can.” - Lesley Dunstan

Jim’s Mowing Movember Support Brand New Carols November is over, the month where men across the nation let their facial hair grow to raise awareness in the community about men’s health issues. Darrin Kopp has been a keen supporter of Movember for the past eight years and is certain to continue his support well into the future. Darrin is the local representative for Jim’s Mowing, and all members of the franchise are encouraged to support Movember. Each year, the company donates money from every job completed in November to the Movember foundation in support of Men’s Health Issues. Movember supports projects relating to prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and physical inactivity. Darrin has made a particularly strong effort to encourage others to increase the amount of physical activity they do by leading by example. Darrin and his wife created their own Movember page, where they documented their exercise programs, including fit boxing three times a week and Boot Camp twice a week. Darrin also grew a moustache for the month, which he shaved off on Monday night. Along with Movember, Jim’s Mowing franchisees also support Red Nose Day, which supports Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Both of these fundraising events
are very worthy causes and it is great to see companies take the initiative to support them. Movember began in 2003, starting with thirty men and expanding over twelve years to include millions of participants. The organisation seeks to make a global contribution to men living happier, healthier, longer lives. Since the organisation’s beginning, the Movember campaign has raised more than $685 million and has funded over 1000 projects focusing on men’s health issues. “The ambition underpins everything we do. It is the driving force behind our campaigns, funding strategy and vision for the future.” By Anita Morrison

A fantastic community tradition is back this year and the whole town is invited. Havannah House are once again hosting the community Christmas Day Lunch at the Forbes Town Hall. Previously Havannah House was affiliated with Anglicare but is now controlled by a body corporate after the Combined Churches Association purchased the building. This community facility is not government funded and relies on fundraising and revenue raised through its two businesses, greeting card verse printing and screen
printing, to sustain the valuable support it provides. The centre holds two to three garage sales per year which provides a major part of the funds necessary to maintain the property. Donations of good quality second items are always being sort and Havannah House would be grateful for any assistance. The services four managers, Geoff and Caroline Wells along with David and Julie Virtue, live on site and are able to provide support and referrals to meet the needs of their clients. The majority of the food for the Christmas luncheon is donated or purchased through donations of money received. Based on previous years organisers will be catering for 150 guests. Forbes Services Memorial Club hosted a Melbourne Cup luncheon this year with all proceeds from the activity benefitting the Forbes Breast Cancer Support Group. On Monday two of the groups representatives, Dianne Howarth and Denise Jelbart, were presented with a cheque for $1173.15 by event organisers, Raylene Paradowski and Lindy Sherritt. The money was raised through the sale of raffle tickets and a silent auction. The Breast Cancer Support Group is an informal support group made up of breast cancer patients and survivors. The group meets on the second Saturday of each month at the Vandenburg Hotel for a casual lunch. The group does not hold meetings but provides friendship, support and helpful advice to people diagnosed or recovering from breast cancer and its treatments. There are no membership fees and everyone is welcome. The group aims to keep people informed and provide practical help to allow cancer sufferers to maintain a sense of normality and make themselves available to listen and provide support. Raylene and Lindy were very pleased with the event and made special mention of Michael and Denise Jelbart who were regular raffle ticket sellers prior and during the event. They also wished to thank Jenny Currey who was the MC for the afternoon, and even though it was her first time, did an exceptional job. The Forbes Breast Cancer Support Group were most grateful for the donation of funds which will be used to improve the facilities at the Western Care Lodge giving patients having treatment access to self-care accommodation in Orange. THINKING OF MOVING OVER CHRISTMAS?
I was busy snapping images of our store for a recent Facebook post and these two photos really amazed me! I know sometimes to people, especially males, that it seems unnecessary to always add cushions. But I can honestly say the difference they make to the cosy and welcoming nature of a room is undeniable, and these pictures show this point to a tee. A room just doesn’t have the same WOW factor and feels less inviting, which becomes more obvious in print. At Parkes Furniture One we go to so much effort to really create interesting room displays and settings so you can picture these new pieces like they would look in your own home. It is a great tool for you to use to get ideas from and also makes for an enjoyable stroll around our large store. So next time you are In Parkes why not call in to say ‘Hi’ and to take a tour of what goodies we have in store that week. Hope to see you soon, Karen Creith.

My House My Home Essential Advice for a Safe Christmas Display With the festive season just around the corner, Essential Energy is encouraging Christmas light enthusiasts to follow some simple steps to ensure their decorations are installed safely. Regional Manager Northern, Mark Summers, recommended taking safety precautions to ensure displays were not only festive, but safe as well. “We ask everyone to inspect their Christmas lights for wear and tear as the decorations are packed away for most of the year,” Mark said. “If you find damage such as frayed cords or loose connections, get a licensed electrician to do the repairs, or dispose of
the decoration safely and purchase new ones.” When buying new festive lights, ensure they comply with the appropriate Australian Standards and follow the manufacturer’s directions for their use. Essential Energy advises against overloading power boards or hanging Christmas lights near water, such as around pools. Never string decorations on powerlines or house service line connections, and ensure your property is protected by a Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker (ELCB). “If you are going to the trouble of an elaborate display, we’d encourage residents to consider hiring a qualified elec-
trician to install the lights professionally,” Mark said. “Finally, test your smoke detector is functioning properly and turn off your Christmas lights before retiring each night for safety and to reduce electricity consumption.” When dismantling and packing the lights away after the festivities are over for another year, be careful not to damage or tangle the decorations and store them in a cool dry location out of the reach of children.
Christmas Clean Ups fore the big day. Collect all the wrapping paper after the presents are finished and remember that there are many ways to recycle it. Your bathroom and toilet will be a high traffic area over the holidays so keep it clean and hygienic and remember the finishing touches. Dust all the surfaces from light fittings to photo frames. Don’t forget about the entrance to your home either – the first place your guests see when they arrive. Finish it all off with some festive decorations and you will have a great home to entertain friends and family during the summer holidays.

25 Years of Volunteers The volunteers of the Forbes Railway Arts and Visitor Information Centre enjoyed a special afternoon tea at the Forbes Town Hall last week to celebrate the group’s 25 year anniversary. During the afternoon tea, Mayor Phyllis Miller presented Merle Churchill, Anne Nixon, Dorothy Findlay and Pearl McGuire with gold life membership badges for 25 years of service. Mayor Miller also presented certificates of appreciation to Judith Taylor, Lyn Simmonds and Maureen Moon for their years of service, hard work and dedication. Mayor Miller said she was honoured to be celebrating the 25th anniversary of the volunteers. “For 25 years the volunteers at the Forbes Railway Arts and Visitor Information Centre have welcomed our visitors to Forbes and personalised their visit, given them a warm country welcome and excellent service,” Mayor Miller said. “During that time Forbes residents and visitors have also enjoyed the beautiful handcrafts, arts, baking, jams and relishes made by these volunteers.” “The time they have dedicated to our centre is invaluable to the visitor economy of Forbes and all of our volunteers have played a key role in improving the experience our visitors have while in Forbes.”

TOUCH Well we are at the pointy end of the season now with the final round of games to be played on Monday night. In saying that, there are still a number of teams that can alter their position on the ladder, which could in turn result in a smoother run into the finals series in a fortnight. The committee has still noticed that there are a few teams who have members that are not in the correct uniform. On Monday night this will result in a loss of points for the round. This also goes for players that are playing for a team that they are not registered for. Despite this being a good gesture, you are actually giving that team an unfair advantage against a team that is following the rules. Please don’t put your position on the ladder at risk by not following the rules that have been put into place for the betterment of the game. The warmer weather has definitely settled in so the committee is encouraging all players and spectators to make sure they are consuming plenty of fluid during and after games. There are several taps around the fields so please re-fill between games if you are playing multiple games on the night. Just a reminder that the semi-finals will take place on Monday 7th December 2015, with the Grand Finals being held on Thursday 10th December. Have a great weekend, see you Monday. A Win for Forbes Jockey Club Forbes Jockey Club will receive a major boost in prize money with new legislation set to match NSW’s wagering tax rates with Victoria’s. Every TAB race at Forbes Jockey Club will have the minimum prize money offered per race increased by $5,000 to $20,000 from July 2016. “Any funding increase directed towards country racing is good,” said Forbes Jockey Club President Blake Nicholson. “Hopefully it will encourage more trainers and people into racehorse ownership which will boost the quality of racing in country New South Wales.” “Infrastructure at the tracks has been worn down over the last couple of decades and it is fantastic to see money going towards that.” Member for Orange Andrew Gee said this will mean more jobs, bigger crowds and help grow the local racing industry. “Racing is an important part of the Forbes community – everyone loves to get down to the Jockey Club and enjoy a day out at the races,” Mr Gee said. “Local trainers, jockeys, owners and punters have been crying out for increased prize money to invigorate the industry and the benefits will flow to the whole community.” Deputy Premier and Minister for Racing Troy Grant said the increased prize money at Forbes Jockey Club is part of a $21 mil-
lion state-wide package to boost country and provincial racing. “In addition to the increased prize money at regular TAB meetings, approximately 40 Country Showcase meetings will be held at regular intervals across regional NSW offering a minimum $30,000 in prize money,” Mr Grant said. “Racing NSW has recognised the huge contribution that regional NSW makes to the racing industry so I would like to thank Chairman John Messara, the Board and CEO Peter V’landys for delivering this much needed boost to country racing.” Legislation to match NSW wagering tax rates with Victoria passed NSW Parliament last week, delivering $235 million extra to the industry over five years and an extra $90 million for each year after that.
