IMAGE: Tom Drane ... Forbes winner of dual national titles last weekend

9yo Tom Terrific brings home two national dirt-track titles Tom Drane might be just nine years old, but last weekend the keen member of Forbes Auto Sports Club carried away two national titles at the Australian Dirt Track Championships in Kempsey, winning the 65cc two-stroke class and the 80cc modified-four-stroke class in the seven-to-nine-years division. Mum and Dad — Matt and Lisa Drane, who own MD Steel Fabrication in Forbes — were obviously proud of the achievement, but Tom was “absolutely over the moon” after a weekend that saw him win all 10 of his races and completely dominate his events. “Even when he fell behind in a race, he just revved it up and fought his way back to the front,” said Matt. “There was just no stopping

Tom has been riding dirt bikes since he was four and started competing as soon as he reached seven and became eligible. Also representing Forbes at Kempsey were Tom’s younger siblings, Georgia and Sam, and Beau Bailey. RANTS and Raves From the other side of the counter

MAYORAL NOTES We have received news that four new mobile base stations will be built at Bedgerabong, Jemalong, Warroo and Eugowra under the Federal Government’s Mobile Blackspot Program. This will make a huge difference to mobile coverage in the Forbes Shire. Construction is expected to start within four months with all four stations to be complete over the next three years. Securing the funding was a great team effort between Council, Jemalong Irrigation and, most importantly, our Federal Member John Cobb. ..................................................................... Other exciting news this week is that the Forbes Medical Centre has received a $125,000 Rural and Regional Teaching Infrastructure Grant to go towards the building of four additional consulting rooms to accommodate the students from the University of Wollongong. ..................................................................... Forbes has three finalists in the 2015 Travel In Inland Tourism Awards —Apex Riverside Tourist Park, the Forbes in the Heart of the Country campaign, and Girragirra Retreat. This is fantastic news for Forbes. The winners will be announced at the gala award dinner in Broken Hill on Saturday, July 25. ..................................................................... As you may know, we have secured a tenant for the café at the Homemaker’s Centre, with the lease to commence at the beginning of August. We look forward to letting you know the official opening date in the near future. Have a great week, stay safe and God bless. Cr Phyllis Miller OAM, Mayor of Forbes Shire

We’ve had some good responses “from the other side of the counter” to our article about efficient and friendly provision of service from store owners and their staff. One shopkeeper spoke to us about the notion that the customer is always right. “They’re clearly not always right,” she said. “And when they combine that attitude with a bad day, then they can make it extremely unpleasant for everyone involved, and that includes me, my staff and other customers.” “If they wake up feeling like throwing rocks at the sun, then they shouldn’t be contemplating a day shopping. It’s as though they’re going out looking for a fight, and that doesn’t do anyone any good, though I guess it might make them happy for a little while.” “And they can get just so shirty about quite silly things.” “Gift vouchers, for instance, clearly have a use-by date on them. There’s no point in going into a shop with a voucher that’s a couple of years beyond its use-by date and expect someone to wave a magic wand and make it good again. It’s very unlikely to happen and there’s no use having a hissy-fit over it.” She stressed that shopping and doing other business involved a two-way contract. “Both sides should be as pleasant to each other as possible,” she said. “When that happens there’s a much better chance that everyone will be satisfied and that the experience will be a mutually rewarding one. And that’s something we should both be looking for. “So my advice is that if you’re having a bad-hair day, don’t take it out on me.”

First Inland Rail tender awarded GHD has been awarded the tender to provide environmental and engineering consultancy on the first stages of Australia’s Brisbane-toMelbourne Inland Rail project — $300 million to commence work on the Inland Rail project to create jobs, achieve productivity gains and stimulate economic growth for the future prosperity of Australia, especially the regions. These first tenders will provide vital input to planning of some of the key segments of the Parkes-to-Narromine and Narrabri-to-NorthStar sections of the Inland Rail project. Snippets... The Lachlan Valley Caravan Club, formed in 2003 as the Forbes Country Club Caravanners, is well known locally for having plenty of fun on its monthly rallies. So far this year its rallies have led members to Tumbarumba, Oberon, Manilla, Kiacatoo (west of Condobolin for the club’s annual bush rally), Young and Victoria’s Gippsland region for the club’s annual three-week roving rally. The next event is a rally to Bourke from July 20-27, with members spending two nights at the Nyngan Riverside Caravan Park and four at Kidman’s Camp in North Bourke. For further information and plenty of photos of the members letting their hair down or just having fun in the case of the follicly challenged, visit www.lachlanvalleycaravanclub.org.au. The Forbes and District Lions Club will officially welcome its new President, Peter Bright, at its annual changeover dinner tomorrow night when members will meet at the Golf Club Hotel. This is his second time as President, hopefully with a less eventful start to the term than last time, about five years ago, when Peter had been diagnosed with prostrate cancer and was inducted by phone from his hospital bed. Peter replaces outgoing President and club stalwart Robyn Seberry.

The club will hold its next car boot sale on Saturday, August 15, in Lions Park at the end of Lachlan St from 7.30am to 1.30pm. For more information, contact the incoming president, Peter Bright, on 0419 463 803 (peterabright@bigpond.com) or email lionsclubs@hotmail.com.au. Don’t forget to enter our competition to win a double family pass to Taronga Western Plains Zoo. A family pass includes tickets for two adults and two children for entry to the zoo and, in this case, is valid for 12 months. For entry details, visit our website, www. forbesphoenix.com.au, or go to our Facebook page. Remember, you have to be in it

to win it, and the zoo is such a great place for you to visit ... and, of course, to take the kids. If you are wanting to find out about some very local artists and listen to some original music, then tune into James Monte and his new program, called ML Uncharted on local community radio 2LVR (97.9FM). The show airs every Wednesday from 9-11pm and highlights unsigned artists and original music from Forbes and elsewhere in the Central West. Contact James on 0400 054 381. Don’t forget to send your soup recipe in to us this week to see if you can win a voucher from Mezzanine for $50.00.

Here’s how to build a green home in Forbes without spending a fortune If you think building an energy efficient home requires spending big on expensive green materials, building methods and technologies, you might have to think again. What you may not know is that it is possible to build an energy efficient home for the same price as a standard home – while still saving up to 60 per cent on your energy bills every single year. Green building company Green Homes Aus-

tralia Lachlan Valley is ready to help local homebuyers build houses that use less energy and maintain more consistent temperatures throughout the seasons. Local owner and builder, Jason Hopkins has seen positive feedback since starting the business at the beginning of 2014. “Green building principles, clever design and creative use of standard building materials are key to making your home more efficient,

as does working to suit the owner’s climate, block, lifestyle and budget”. Hopkins explains. “With energy prices where they are these days, we’re seeing more people in Forbes wanting to build affordable homes that will save them money, and we’re always ready to help”. For more information on building a Green Home, contact Jason Hopkins on 0424 595 129.

The friendly eisteddfod draws the competitors to Forbes Kristin Barrass, vice-president of the Forbes Eisteddfod Committee, and Kristin Woods, the competition’s dance coordinator, certainly have something in common apart from first names. They’re both convinced that the event’s reputation as the “friendly eisteddfod” has much to do with it being able to attract more than 1500 entrants to its dance, music, speech and drama sections. The contestants’ joy and the ease with which they’re approaching the dance section, which is currently on at the Forbes High School assembly hall, is testament to that. “Our eisteddfod is definitely seen as welcoming, comfortable, and great for building confidence and performance skills,” said Kristin Barrass. “That’s why we get so many first-time com-

petitors. They don’t feel as intimidated here as they do in some of larger, more formal eisteddfods.” And the entrants do come from far and wide — obviously many from Forbes itself, but also from Parkes, Eugowra, Grenfell, Orange, Bathurst, Leeton and Griffith, some indeed from as afar afield as southern Queensland. “We’re all volunteers here,” said Kristin Woods. “Though we also get enormous support from the Forbes Shire Council and from sponsors such as the Northparkes Mine, the Forbes Services Club and McDonalds.” And both Kristins also have special words of praise and thanks for the guest adjudicators, Andrew Mortimer (Melbourne) and Pamela Herring (Sydney). Forbes leads the Central West with three tourism gongs In an outstanding performance for a town of its size, Forbes has scored three nominations from a total of 51 in the final countdown for the 2015 Travel In NSW Inland Tourism Awards — Forbes’ Council’s Apex Riverside Caravan Park, the Council’s Forbes in the Heart of Country promotional campaign, and independently owned Girragirra Retreat. This placed Forbes ahead of much bigger Central NSW centres such as Bathurst, with one nomination, and Orange, with two. The Council’s General Manager, Brian Steffan, was ecstatic about the achievement, especially the nomination of the Heart of Country campaign which is very much at the centre of the town’s tourism promotional activity. “It very much takes an integrated approach which combines a strong online presence

with other things such as billboards, stationery and successful ideas from previous campaigns,” he said. “The central message encourages visitors to take some time out and embrace the rural agricultural experience.” “And then, of course, the Apex Riverside Caravan Park starts with such a glorious location on the banks of the Lachlan as its principal natural asset, but also has such efficient and friendly hands-on management from Lance and Amanda Young.” Brian and Cr Grant Clifton, Chairman of the Council’s Tourism Committee, will travel to Broken Hill on July 25 for a gala award dinner at which the overall winners will be announced and regional tourism celebrated. My Aged Care The way older people in Forbes and the rest of the Western NSW Local Health District are referred to community support services has changed. My Aged Care is a new contact centre which aims to provide a ‘one-stop shop’ for assessing and referring older people to services in the community. “My Aged Care will identify a person’s aged-care needs for home support services, provide assessment services for older people and update client record information, all in the one place,” said Jackie Corliss, Acting Director of Integrated Primary Care and Partnerships. A new Commonwealth Home Support Program has also started, providing entry-level support services for people aged 65 years and over (or 50 years and over for Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders) who need help to remain living independently at home. Older people and their families and carers can make referrals through My Aged Care either online at www.myagedcare.gov.au or by phoning the Contact Centre on 1800 200 422.

RURAL ROUNDUP Prepare Your Stock For Greener Pastures With AgriWest With the countryside looking a picture at the moment, following on from good rains, all that is needed now is some good spring rains to record a bumper season. Lambs have come down slightly in price as we wait for the new season sucker lambs to start coming through, which wont be far away. This is a good time of the year to be getting ready for harvest, ensuring all your machinery is serviced, and ready for spraying and harvest, as well as a good time to catch up on some fencing, as well as stock work. You need to ensure that your stock are prepared for the green feed coming through. Green crops and pastures, such as lucerne, forage oats/barley & wheat become predominant at this time of year. These types of feeds can be very successful in terms of maximizing health returns if the livestock consuming them are prepared in both health and nutrition. Here are some tips for your stock for this month. Vaccinate Prior to placing livestock on green feed, vaccinating stock with a clostridial (5in1/6in1) is extremely important. Pulpy kidney is a leading cause of death in stock that are faced with a sudden change in feed. Changes in feed allow the pulpy kidney organisms to proliferate and produce large quantities of toxins, leading to the rapid death of the animal. Vaccinating is a very cost effective form of insurance for the health of your stock. Drench Ensuring your livestock are free of worms before placing them on green feed will maximize the utilisation of the feed. Worm burdens place a large amount of stress on an animal’s immune system, their ability to convert feed to weight and/or milk, if lactacting, is severely impaired this leads to significant feed wastage and productivity loss. However, prior to drenching it is recommended that you do a worm test to determine the burden and the type of worms present. This allows for a more specific selection of drench (if needed at all) and reduces the risk of developing drench resistance. Three types of worm test kits are available in store at CRT AgriWest, with varying levels of testing capabilities. Nutrition On the surface, green feeds and fodder crops appear to contain reasonable quantities of both energy and protein. However, there are inherent problems. If not carefully managed, this can result in a reduction in Feed Conversion Efficiency (FCE), significant wastage of feeds as well as lead to animals showing primary signs associated with scours, bloat

and grass tetany, and in severe cases, death. Providing livestock with a source of starch is a very effective method of combating the negative effects associated with grazing lush, green feed. Using specialised starch-based loose licks are a fantastic, simple and very cost effective method of delivering starch & all the required vitamins & minerals to the rumen, while reducing the incidence of green feed related problems. Adopting these few actions will have you well on the way to ensuring your stock don’t just survive but thrive on green feed this winter. For more information, come in and see the friendly staff at Agriwest today.

Chris Roylance

Forbes Shire Councillor and Managing Director of Roylance’s Automotive, Industrial, Earth-Moving & Mining. How long have you lived in or around Forbes? All my life — since 1955. What do you love most about your work? Every day is a challenge and there’s always a new problem to tackle, whether it’s working for Roylance’s or for the Forbes Shire. How do you start your day? My day starts at 5am with the morning news and a mug or two of tea. Then it’s into the emails and off to work as quickly as I can. What do you do in your spare time? Spare time is rare, but I spend as much as I can with the grandkids and the rest of the family, or travelling with Deb. But a game of golf is rewarding, especially since the Forbes course has been revitalised. How do you like your coffee? A mug of cappucinno is good, but mostly I drink tea all day. What makes your day? When everything I have been trying to achieve comes to fruition. But if it doesn’t I’m content to try another day.

Matthews Williams Law

Family Law –

Should You Use a Lawyer? It is possible to do your own divorce, property settlement, custody and maintenance matters. Remember that these areas are fraught with emotion and pit falls. Remember, too, the old axiom: “Any lawyer who acts for himself has a fool for a client”. This applies equally to lay people. Lawyers can give you information and advice prepare documents, assist in negotiations, counselling and mediations, and can represent you in court if your issues cannot be resolved beforehand. The Family Law Act requires a lawyer to tell you about how you can settle your disputes by conciliation and the counselling services offered by the Family Court. You must also be given a copy of the information brochure “Marriage, Families and Separation”. The reasons you should consider appointment of a legal representative are that you may want advice on multiple issues at the same time. A court will not grant final orders until it is satisfied that proper arrangements have been made for the children. There may also be tensions between the parties which make it impossible for them to objectively deal with all issues. Legal Aid may be available but you will need to complete and submit a Legal Aid application. If we at Matthews Williams can assist you on this or any other legal matter, feel free to phone me or one of our solicitors or call into our office for an appointment. QUESTION of the week What are you enjoying most about the school holidays?

The circus is in town and there’s plenty of fun to be had for everyone, whether your one of the spectators or one of the participants. Pictured below: Ash, Finn and Blake Berry.

Taylor Bliss is enjoying catching up with friends and having sleep-ins

Jagger Gillingham is enjoying going to the movies to see Minions, having a ball at the circus, where he met the ringmaster, and becoming a big brother again to a new baby sister.

This week was time for budding young dancers from Forbes and surrounds to take part in what has come to be regarded as “the friendly eisteddfod”. Pictured are Lauren Neilsen (left) and Addie Rose.

Richard Morgan (Director of Tourism, Community and Cultural Development, Forbes Shire Council). Richard doesn’t have school-age children any more but he’s still very much in the thick of it through having to organise Council’s program of school-holiday activities. That means making sure there are sufficient staff at the Community Centre and that the children and young adults have a line-up of diverse and compelling activities. Included this time are sessions with a driving instructor, which the 17-year olds loved and found really useful.

If you have any photos from a special event, please send them to editor@forbesphoenix.com.au

Forbes Sport MEN’S GOLF

Collie and Callaghan take Monthly Medals

IMAGE: Forbes Bushrangers do battle with Cambridge Saints in last Sunday’s Second Division clash

SOCCER

All three Forbes teams in top four of Lachlan Association All three Forbes sides sit within the top four teams of their respective divisions of the Lachlan Amateur Soccer Association. In the First Division, Forbes Gunns and Forbes All Stars both had comfortable wins last weekend against Parkes Shire sides, the former beating Rawson Home Raptors 3-1 and the latter dominating the Tichborne Tigers 6-1. After the round, Forbes Gunns sit equal on top of the table with Rawson Home Raptors on 45 points, though they’re significantly behind on goal difference. Forbes All Stars are in fourth place on 34 points, just ahead of Tichborne Tigers on 31. In First Division games this weekend, it’s Forbes Gunns’ turn to confront Tichborne Ti-

gers at 2pm on Sunday at Forbes Botanical Gardens, while for Forbes All Stars it’s same day and same time against third-placed Lightning FC at Harrison Park, Parkes. In the competition’s Second Division, Forbes Bushrangers sit in second place on 34 points, behind Rovers on 43 points but comfortably ahead of Cambridge Saints on 27 points. Last weekend, the Bushrangers lost narrowly 4-3 to Cambridge Saints, while this Sunday they play Parkes Rovers at noon in an away game at Harrison Park, Parkes. All in all, the association features teams from Forbes, Parkes, Grenfell, Condobolin and West Wyalong.

RUGBY LEAGUE

It’s shaping as a golden season for the Magpies It’s starting to look like a wonderful season for the Forbes Magpies in the Group 11 rugby league competition, with the Reserve Grade and Under 18 sides both sitting on top of their ladders and the First Grade team coming third. The situation was reinforced last Sunday by dominant performances at home against Nyngan. The First Grade side won 31-12, and sits on 18 points behind Dubbo CYMS and Parkes. They have to keep winning, though, to stay

ahead of Wellington and Dubbo Westside. The Reserves won 40-22, putting them on top of the ladder with 22 points, just ahead of Dubbo CYMS and Dubbo Westside on 20. The Under 18s scored plenty of points to easily account for the Nyngan lads 42-14. They sit at the head of the table on 23 points, ahead of Wellington, Parkes, Dubbo CYMS and Dubbo Macquarie in an extremely tight race. All three teams play the Cobar Roosters next Sunday at Larkin Oval, Cobar.

The sun did shine on the Forbes Golf Club, neatly highlighting the crisp frosts in the morning, the expansive cover of grass, and the scintillating performance of the golfers themselves. It was definitely a case of the “Double Cs” leading the way for the field. The field for the 18-hole Monthly Medal held on Saturday comprised 49 players who were keen to get around the course briskly. To keep warm many players elected to take the walking option, thus also supporting the sponsors Walkers AgnVet. Although it must be said that the play by some of the golfers was quite agricultural at the times. The Winner of the A-Grade Monthly Medal was ‘Big Crane’ Betland with a 71 nett. He was well pleased to have beaten into second place his baby brother ‘King John’, who managed 73 nett, using his handicap to adjust his even-par-72 gross score. Steve’s two birdies on the 6th and 7th were the real clincher over John’s double-bogey on the 7th. But both played fine golf. In B-Grade, Brian ‘Fred’ Collie, with a nett 69, felt comfortable all day and was well pleased, and quite modest, to win the Medal. Runner-up was Alby Callaghan, who was able to throw off some ill effects utilising some miracle medicine, and return home with a nett 71. Fred was quite thankful that he did not par the first, which folklore has as a sure disaster. His round went well with 11 pars marked on the card. The C-Grade Monthly Medal went to a Gentleman’s Gentleman ahead of an Elder Statesman. Geoff Drane was in rare form to finish with a nett 72, and finished just ahead — although always behind throughout the day — of Tom Edols on nett 73. Tom played early in some of the crisp conditions, but Geoff had to contend with the nippy cold in the afternoon shade. The winner for the A-Division Daily Comp, was ‘Fred’ Collie with a nett 69, conscious always of the ‘Big Crane’ Betland who was in hot pursuit, but finished second with a 71 nett. Fred was so pleased with his round that in the clubhouse he was willing to describe his round hole-by-hole to those resting there. Funny how the clubhouse emptied quickly! In the B-Division, Alby Callaghan was triumphant with his nett 71. And to help in his celebrations, was another winner in the guise of Geoff Drane, one shot behind on a nett 72. They played in the same group, but have not yet divulged who won the drinks. By Short Putt

LADIES’ GOLF

Stirling and Drabsch add handicap honours to their 4BBB scratch title Winners of the Forbes Golf Club’s annual ladies’ 4BBB Handicap Championships, sponsored by Carolyn Duncan, have been decided after a play-off, with Kerry Stirling and Barbara Drabsch up against Janet Smith and Debbie Dingwall. It was a very close match that wasn’t really decided until the last hole when Kerry holed a huge putt for a birdie, which gave her and Barbara a one-stroke win, 68 to 69 nett.” “We were very even the whole way,” said Kerry. “There was never more than a shot or two in it, and Janet and Debbie were ahead by a single shot at the turn. “I guess we were lucky that both of them hit into the water on the 15th, but even so it did come down to the putts on the 18th. I hit a good one and luckily it fell in the cup.” Kerry and Barbara had earlier won the club’s 4BBB Scratch Championships. On Wednesday July 1, the ladies held the

fifth round of the GNSW Monthly Medal and putting competition, an 18-hole stroke event sponsored by Bernardis IGA. Division 1 winner was Fran Smith (74 nett), with runner-up Colleen Venables (76 nett). Division 2 winner was Marie Reid (72 nett) on a countback from runner-up Fae Grogan (also 72 nett). Nearest the pins were: 9th Enid Baker; 18th Bev Gerdes. Monthly Medal winners: Division 1, F Smith; Division 2, M Reid; Division 3, T Armitage on countback. On Saturday July 4, the competition was a 4BBB par event sponsored by J Hubbard and L Godden. The sisters combination of Bess Shields and E Coombs were the winners with +9. Next best were Janet Smith and Margaret Bentick with +8. Nearest the pins were: 9th J Fletcher; 18th E Hush.

RUGBY UNION

Narromine visit nets mixed bag for Platypi The Forbes Platypi travelled to Narromine last weekend and came home with a mixed bag of results in the Blowes Clothing Cup. The Firsts lost a very close tussle 27-24 and sit in seventh place on the competition ladder, too far adrift of Mudgee and Dubbo Kangaroos to make the finals. The Seconds, however, sit in fifth spot following their 27-12 win over the Red-andWhites. They’re just a point clear of Dubbo Kangaroos, and have a tough match next Saturday against ladder leaders Orange City. The Platypi Colts were soundly beaten 65-0 by Narromine and languish near the bottom of the competition ladder with just 9 points from their 11 games. Tomorrow, all three sides will host Orange at Grinsted Park, in Forbes’ South Circle Park.
