All Fired Up

Soaring temperatures over the weekend did not deter our volunteer firefighters from competing to the best of their ability in the 2016 Region South 2 Fire & Rescue NSW Firefighter Championships held in Forbes on the weekend. Twenty five teams from around the state competed in eleven events during the two day competition with Kelso the eventual winners followed by Nowra and then Bega in third position. The Forbes Brigade entered two teams in the event and finished 8th and 11th which was a fantastic effort. Each event simulates a real life emergency situation and fire fighters race against the clock to secure the fastest time. Penalties are incurred for infringements of the rules or protocols with all teams taking the

competition very seriously. Visiting officials were very impressed with the venue provided by Forbes and team entries for the weekend were one of the highest for this level of competition. Forbes Mayor, Phyllis Miller welcomed everyone to Forbes and expressed gratitude for the incredible job our fire fighters do everyday. She reflected on her own personal experience and could not fault the local Forbes Brigade when her home was burnt several years before. FRNSW Chaplin Lyndsay Smith gave the blessing and the Fire & Rescue NSW Commissioner – Greg Mullins AFSM declared the championship officially open.

Council Rolls Out New Bins

MAYORAL NOTES The CMCA Solos Network Rally has been in full swing this week and I was lucky enough to go along to their welcome dinner. Out of the 350 members attending the rally there are 90 newbies in that mix, which is great. The CMCA Solos Network takes away the fear of travelling on your own as you are in a group with so many other people who are in the same situation. They really are just like one big happy family. The economic value to the Forbes community is amazing when we have these rallies come to town. The NSW Fire and Rescue Regional Championships were a success on the weekend with our Forbes firies placing eighth overall, which was a great effort out of 25 teams. The competition was really good to watch and it was also delightful to catch up with NSW Fire Commissioner Greg Mullens. Speaking of firies, our NSW Rural Fire Service had three new category 7 trucks delivered this week for Lake, Forbes Central and Jemalong Fire Brigades. The three trucks are worth almost $600,000 in total and will replace the older tankers in the near future. Tomorrow is the Forbes Rugby Union President’s Lunch and it is always a great event. Kim Muffet and his band of organisers do an excellent job of putting it together. Have a great week, stay safe and God bless. Mayor, Cr Phyllis Miller OAM

Continued from page 1 President FRNSW FCA – Captain Greg Fredericks remembered the last time the event was hosted in Forbes and stated how the Forbes Brigade responded to a house fire during the event. The Saturday evening function held at the Sport & Recreation Club was a huge success with approximately 200 attending and organisers of the weekend were extremely pleased with the weekend overall. Future 2016 Championships are to be held at Grafton in May, Tamworth in August and the State Championships at Wyong in October. The Forbes team are hoping to attend Tamworth and Wyong and improve their position on the ladder. By Anita Morrison

All Forbes Shire residents should now have three new bins as part of the new kerbside waste, recycling and food and organics collection services. The last rubbish collection from old bins will be the week of March 28 to April 1 and the new bins will be collected from the week commencing April 4. The frequency of collection will be weekly for the green lidded bin and alternate fortnights for both the red and yellow lidded bins. JR Richards and Sons will collect the old bins following the commencement of the new service and this will take place on April 26, and Council asks for all old bins to be left upside down on the kerb for collection from the evening of April 25. Bins will not

Forbes Mayor Phyllis Miller said she encouraged any residents who had any questions about the new bin service to call Council. “As like any new process, it can take a little while to adjust to but we are here to help you if you have any questions,” Mayor Miller said. “By using the recycling and food and garden waste collection services correctly, you are reducing the amount of garbage going to landfill.” Residents are asked to contact Council’s Environmental Services and Planning Department on 6850 2344 if they have not received their new bins yet.

Forbes Swelters Through February and March

Forbes and the entire Central West has sweltered through February and the start of March, as the country comes to grips of a record-breaking heat wave. Some areas have recorded their hottest start to Autumn in history, and above average temperatures are expected to hang around until April. While the historical average maximum for March is 29 degrees, Forbes has seen daily average highs of 36 degrees so far this month. This followed a daily average of 34.1 degrees in February, up 1.5 degrees on the historical average.

While possible showers have been forecasted for Friday, the last two months have been very dry, with only 6.4mm of rain officially falling since February 1. Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Jake Phillips said the extreme weather was due to persistent high pressure in the atmosphere. “It’s largely due to a band of high pressure, which has been very static across the region, and that’s prevented any cold fronts from moving through,” he said. “The most extreme conditions have been across the west and the south of the state.” While above average temperatures are

expected to persist through March, the current El Nino weather pattern is expected to subside come April, and this means rain could return. There is about a 30 per cent chance of a La Nina [wetter than normal conditions] forming later this year, but with long term forecasts currently suggesting El Nino [drier than normal conditions] is unlikely to reform, the BOM stated no bad news is good news for local farmers. “For the next six months there is no prediction of dryness for much of the South East going through for the next three months,” seasonal risk agronomist Dale Grey said.

EASTER 2016 Bunnies are brown, bunnies are white, bunnies are always an Easter delight. Bunnies are cuddly, the large and the small but we like the chocolate ones the best of them all! Easter is upon us once again and this Christian holiday is recognised by religious and non-religious alike as a celebration of new life, which is symbolised by the Easter egg. Easter’s one of the most popular driving holidays of the year, The boys at Tyreright know what’s best for your vehicle and it’s important before you take any major trip that you conduct a few simple safety checks to make sure your vehicle’s ready for the road. • Check your fluids – Oil, Transmission, Brakes, Power Steering, Coolant, and Wiper fluids all should be checked and topped up. • Tyre pressure – Check the placard inside the driver’s side door to find the recommended pressure for your vehicle and adjust your tyres accordingly (make sure to do this early in the day, while your tyres are cool and the air in them hasn’t expanded) • Lights and indicators – Make sure your headlights, high-beams, brake lights, and indicators are all working correctly • Breakdown kit – Have emergency numbers ready if you need them and some water in case you are stuck on the side of the road for a while Call into Tyreright before heading off on your holiday and receive a free safety

check, have your tyres, breaks and suspension checked, they do all mechanical and service work too! Give them a call on 6851 6868. Remember to drive safely, take regular rest breaks and enjoy your holiday. Easter Fact: Did you know that the Christian practice of abstaining from meat on Friday was the reason for the creation of the McDonalds Filet-o-Fish burger? Fish has traditionally been eaten on Good Friday by Christians since around the 2nd century. Christians abstained from eating meat on this day as a reminder of the sacrifice Jesus made on the cross, which is commemorated every year by people of this faith. Everyone loves to get a new pair of pyjamas on Easter, that’s why Undercover Sleepwear and Lingerie are offering a ‘shop and win this Easter’ promotion. If you buy any pair of kids sleepwear this Easter you will go into the draw to win a $50 gift voucher and special gift. Go in-store to browse the collection of Gingerlilly and Marquise children’s pj’s to spoil your little one this Easter. Above all, Easter is a holiday to enjoy spending quality time with family and friends and eating until every button and zip must be undone. Happy Easter everyone!

Solo’s Rally a Huge Success Campervan and Motorhome Club of Australia Solo Network rally organiser Rainey Parsell labeled this week’s Forbes rally a huge success. Around 350 campervans and motorhomes rolled into town on Monday for a week’s worth of action, and they are due to hit the roads again on Monday. The Rally was held at the Forbes Showground for the Solo’s Rally, an event that members of the CMCA Solo Network, as well as some couples from the CMCA, participated in. Solo Network members are members of the CMCA that are single. With between 30 and 40 of the 350 vans made up of couples, it is estimated that around 400 people made it to the rally. While the rally is still yet to feature its open and market day, which is on tomorrow for the public to enjoy, throughout the week members have engaged in activities such as dinners, morning walks, tai chi, meditation, arts and crafts, musical sessions, dance classes, seminars and regional tours. Mrs Parsell said the support Forbes had offered to the Rally was great. “Council let us stay at the campgrounds for free while we set up the showground,

and while we were there people came up to us and thanked us for coming.” Mrs Parsell said many members of the Solo Network had suffered from depression due to being single and lonely (from losing their partners or families) and NSW Mental Health had come on board to run a seminar to help those affected by mental illness. “It’s also great for those people to be apart of what we do as well. We spend our lives on the road and just have lots of fun together,” she said. Tomorrow’s open day will also feature vehicles for inspection, and in some cases, purchase.

More than 2000 children in Calare will benefit from the Coalition Government’s National Partnership Agreement on Universal Access to Early Childhood Education. Federal Member for Calare John Cobb said $840 million in federal funding will be available for quality preschool programmes across the country, and that these benefits would be felt across Calare. “The agreement guarantees funding for 600 hours of quality preschool in the year before school, and includes a focus on lifting participation rates for children from vulnerable and disadvantaged backgrounds,” Mr Cobb said. “This funding will help the 2128 preschool children aged between four and five who are enrolled at local preschools in Calare get the best start in life.” All states and territories including New South Wales have signed up to the National Partnership Agreement, seeing the funding flow into local preschools. The Coalition Government has committed to reforms worth $40 billion for early childhood education and care over the next four years, including more than $3 billion to ensure the system is more accessible, affordable and fairer for families. The funding guarantees support for 15 hours of quality preschool education a week for children in the year before school.

Helping Learner Drivers Become Safer A small but very enthusiastic crowd attended the recent Helping Learner Drivers Become Safer Drivers workshop conducted at Red Bend Catholic College. The workshop offered parents and supervisors hands-on advice on how to provide the most effective driving practice for learner drivers. It covered topics such as; the current licensing system, how to use the Learner Driver Logbook and how to plan on-road driving sessions. Forbes Shire Council’s Road Safety and Injury Prevention Officer, Melanie Suitor, who conducted the workshop, said it was

very productive. “When the population of Forbes is considered, the attendance at this workshop is a strong testament to the support local parents are prepared to offer their learner drivers,” Ms Suitor said. “The feedback from participants following the workshop was all very positive. Parent’s reported that they came along to learn about the licensing system, the licence conditions for young drivers and to get tips on how to handle the learning to drive experience.” “Participants felt more confident under

supervision, planning practice sessions, using the logbook, dealing with difficulties during practice driving sessions and had a better understanding of the new licensing system and licence conditions.” “Parents and supervisors of learner drivers have a crucial role to play in making our roads safer, that is why Forbes Shire Council have teamed up with RMS to conduct these Helping Learner Drivers Become Safer Drivers workshops to better support supervising drivers.”.

Health Smart How to Stay Healthy with Winter Approaching As we approach winter, although at the moment with temperatures still in the high 20’s, early 30’s, it is hard to imagine, it is time to start to think about having a flu vaccine to prevent the early onset of influenza. Influenza (flu) is a highly contagious viral infection that is responsible for major outbreaks of respiratory illness around the world, usually in the winter months. Unlike the common cold, influenza can cause severe illness and life-threatening complications such as pneumonia and bronchitis, which often require hospitalisation. The flu virus is especially dangerous for elderly people, pregnant women, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and very young children, as well as for people with underlying medical conditions. It is estimated that each year, flu contributes to an average of 13,500 hospitalisations and more than 3,000 deaths among Australians aged over 50 years. Causes: Three different types of influenza viruses infect humans: influenza A, B and C. Only influenza A and B cause major outbreaks and severe disease, and these are included in seasonal influenza vaccines. Influenza spreads from person to person through the air by coughing or sneezing, or by direct contact with the virus on hard surfaces or people’s hands. The flu usually differs from a cold as symptoms develop suddenly, and can lead to complications such as chest infections and pneumonia – particularly among the elderly and young children.

Symptoms: Flu symptoms tend to develop abruptly one to three days after infection, and can include: tiredness, high fever, chills, headache, coughing, sneezing, runny noses, poor appetite, and muscle aches. Most people who get the flu will suffer from mild illness and will recover in less than two weeks. However, some people can develop longer-term health problems, including pneumonia, bronchitis, chest and sinus infections, heart, blood system or liver complications, which can lead to hospitalisation and even death. Prevention: Vaccination offers effective protection against influenza, although vaccines need to be given each year as flu viruses are always changing. Influenza vaccination in children: Children can begin to be immunised against the flu from six months of age. Children aged eight years and under require two doses, at least four weeks apart in the first year they receive the vaccine. One dose of influenza vaccine is required for subsequent years and for children aged nine years and over. All vaccines currently available in Australia must pass stringent safety testing before being approved for use by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA). Specific brands of flu vaccine are registered with the TGA for use in children. In 2016, two age-specific flu vaccines will be

available under the National Immunisation Program – one for children under three years of age, and another for people aged three years and over: • Sanofi’s FluQuadri® Junior for children under three years of age. • GlaxoSmithKline Fluarix Tetra® for people aged three years and older. Parents should make sure vaccination providers know how old their children are so they can receive the correct vaccine. Be on the lookout for any of the above signs and to ensure that you are not going to endure the woes of winter, get your vaccination booked in now.

How long have you lived in or around Forbes? I actually live on the road, and have done so for about five and a half years. Before that I lived in Nambucca Heads on the North Coast. What do you do for work? I’ve been in Forbes for the last five weeks setting up the Solo’s rally. I am the site coordinator. I’m a volunteer, and I retired before I became a member of the CMCA Solo’s Network. What do you do in your spare time? I just love being on the road. That’s all I do nowadays. But I used to be a keen fisherman and I used to enjoy renovating the houses I owned.

The Forbes Community have banded together yet again to support someone in need. Matthew Little, and his son Jonah, lost their home recently when it was tragically destroyed by fire. On Friday night the Forbes Junior Magpie Rugby League Club and Forbes Junior Cricket pooled their resources and hosted a charity evening in support of Matthew & Jonah at the Forbes Sport & Recreation Club. The event featured a number of 100 Clubs, Meat Tray Raffles, Chocolate Wheel and Auction items. It was not surprising to see so many support the night for Matthew.

Wren’s Project Begins Display

Former Forbes High School student Isaac Wren’s 2015 HSC work is now on display at the Sydney Powerhouse Museum. Wren, a Year 12 Forbes High School Graduate, is involved with the Shape 2015 exhibition at the Museum, which started on February 27 and ends on May 8. His Year 12 Major Works project was a seven level game with coloured cubes to be picked up and placed on corresponding colours. The project will also be displayed later in the year at the inTech 2016 exhibition at Sydney Olympic Park. InTech 2016 is the annual exhibition of outstanding Major Design Projects developed by 2015 HSC Industrial Technology students and runs from Friday 24 June to Sunday 26 June 2016. In 2015, over 2500 students and their teachers from across NSW visited the InTech exhibition in Sydney. The Powerhouse Museum exhibit fea-

tures a limited number of projects from industrial technology, textiles and design, as well as design and technology. His work was one of just 25 out of a massive 9000 projects picked for the Powerhouse Museum exhibition. Mr Wren’s mother, Monica Wren, said it was a very exciting time for their family to be involved with such a big exhibition. “It was such a fantastic experience for all of us, not just Isaac,” she said. “To think that little Forbes High School is represented at the Powerhouse Museum, and that the Forbes community helped to raise a technological genius is just beyond words. We don’t even have ADSL at home!” Mr Wren told The Forbes Phoenix last month it felt great to have his work on display at one of Australia’s most recognisable museums. “It’s pretty cool. I wasn’t really expecting it,” he said.

It’s hard to believe that this time last year Darcie Morrison had never played a game of Rugby 7’s but dedication and determination has earned her a spot in the Australian University Team to compete at the 2016 Rugby Sevens World University Championships in Swansea, UK from 7-9 July. Darcie began her journey with Rugby 7’s after being identified by the Australian Institute of Sport through the Sports Draft Program in October 2014. She attended weekly training in Sydney with the NSW Rugby 7’s Development Program and her skills have improved dramatically during the past 12 months. As a novice in the sport, Darcie is grateful to have had the support of Charles Dwyer and Jarrod Morrison in the early stages of her development, who helped her grasp an understanding of the game and assisted her develop specific skills necessary for success. Darcie, along with four of her NSW teammates, was notified last week of her selection and is excited at the opportunity to represent her country and pending UK tour later in the year. The selection of 5 NSW players in an Australian squad of 12 is testament to the strength of the NSW Rugby 7’s program. The World University Championships alternate with the Summer and Winter Universiades and are organised every evennumbered year. Rugby Sevens entered the program in 2004 and since then, the number of participants and participating countries has constantly grown. By Anita Morrison

FNA Finals Hopefuls

Magpies Focus on Nines after Bathurst Win The Forbes Magpies will turn their attention to the Parkes Nines tournament this weekend after defeating Bathurst St Patricks 3816 in the Brendan Collits Memorial Cup. It was a brave effort by all players who took to the field, with the mercury reaching a sweaty 37 degrees. But with the temperature only expected to hit 26 degrees on Saturday for the Parkes tournament, Magpies President Greg Grogan said it wouldn’t be as exhausting for the players. “It was ridiculous how hot it was last Saturday [against Bathurst],” he said. “The players did so well to get through that and play how they did, and hopefully it’ll be much cooler at the Nines in Parkes.” “Jake Grace [Magpies coach] will take a squad of 15 over there, and whilst Nines is a completely different form of the game, it’ll be a good test of fitness and keeping possession.” The Magpies will need to win at least two games to make the Parkes Nines finals, and will be confident after showing great form at the West Wyalong knockout competition a fortnight ago, and the Brendan Collits Memorial Cup last week. They raced out to a 26-4 half time lead

in the heat against Bathurst St Patricks at Spooner Oval, and showed plenty of ability with the ball and their fitness levels. The game was played in 20-minute quarters due to the heat, and finished with a jersey auction in the clubhouse after full time. Grogan said coach Grace was happy with the effort his players put in. “It was very hot, but the players dug deep and got through it pretty well. It was a hard game, but it was played in good spirit. Both teams had some players out to injury too,” he said. The Magpies wore a one-off jersey during the game that commemorated the late Brendan Collits, and auctioned these off after the game as a fundraiser. “The Bathurst boys were good enough to buy a few, and we thank them for their generosity. They said they would use them in their new clubhouse that is getting built,” Grogan said. The curtain-raising women’s league tag match between Forbes and Bathurst was abandoned due to serious injury. A Bathurst player was airlifted to hospital after falling awkwardly upon scoring a try, but is reportedly in a good condition. By Joshua Matic

The Forbes Netball Association State League open division two side has an eye on the finals after two wins last Sunday in Orange. Coach Robyn Kenny said she was very happy with the effort her girls put in to come away with wins over Cowra and Cobar, and a close loss to the unbeaten Bathurst. They will enter that second and final round of the State League back in Orange this Sunday before qualifying for the finals. They finished round one in third position on the ladder. To make the finals they will need to finish within the top four at the end of Sunday, and have powerhouses Orange and Dubbo in their first two matches of the day. But Kenny said their form of last weekend should see them make the finals. “Everyone was happy with the effort. I think we can beat both Dubbo and Orange. Bathurst will be the biggest challenge for us if we make the finals,” she said.
