Sportsman’s Dinner to Raise Much Needed Funds
The Ronald McDonald House in Orange has proved to be an important place for families in Forbes since it’s opening last year. Ronald McDonald House is a charitable foundation that accommodates the families of seriously ill children when they are forced to leave home and stay in hospital for medical purposes. The House covers all serious illnesses as well as serious injuries, high-risk pregnancies, and mental illnesses. And since the House opened on April 13 last year, 10 families from Forbes have already used the facility. One young boy from Forbes stayed there overnight last year after suffering a major in-
jury during a game of football, after being transported to Orange Base Hospital. Other Forbes locals have used the House for pediatric and high-risk pregnancy purposes as well. Ronald McDonald House has partnered with the Men of League Foundation, and will host a fundraising dinner at the Orange Ex-Services Club on April 9. Central Western NSW local and dual rugby code international James Grant will be the master of ceremonies, and will be joined by fellow dual international Mike Cleary, as well as rugby league greats Bob McCarthy, Stuart Raper and John Peard. MAYORAL NOTES Our March Council meeting was held last Thursday and Council resolved to recruit a new General Manager after the resignation of Brian Steffen. We wish Brian well in his future endeavours and in the interim Council has been fortunate in obtaining the services of Mr Max Kershaw who has a long and outstanding career as a General Manager. Max will commence on Tuesday, March 29. Our Director of Corporate Services Amity Howe had her last day with Council on Thursday. She has been an outstanding Director of Corporate Services and will be sadly missed by all. Council also resolved at the March meeting to extend the pool season for another four weeks until Sunday, April 24. This means that families will be able to continue enjoying the pool during the Easter school holidays. I attended Stuart Livingstone’s funeral on Tuesday morning. Stuart was one of our local born and bred people of the area that had a stellar career in policing. Sadly Stuart was taken from us way too early but he will always be remembered for his common sense approach to policing and his sense of humour. On Tuesday afternoon, Council took part in the Let’s Stand Together to Prevent Suicide event at Parkes Showground. It was a joint collaboration between a number of organisations and Councils in the Lachlan Area Command. Have a Happy Easter, stay safe and God bless. Mayor, Cr Phyllis Miller OAM
RMH Orange Executive Officer Rebecca Walsh said that functions are the biggest fundraisers for RMH, and the dinner would be crucial. “Functions are our biggest fundraiser by a long shot. We have a ball each year and last year we raised $105,000 from it,” she said. “There is a great synergy between the Ronald McDonald House Charity and the Men of League Foundation, particularly here in the Central West, as it is a great rugby league territory.” RMH Orange has the biggest coverage area of any RMH in the NSW/ACT region, covering a whopping 86% of the state, all the way from Broken Hill across to Orange.
locally first!
The House has already accommodated 77 families from across the state. It has eight units that sleep six people in each, and the cost to run these is about $138 per night. Ms Walsh said RMH will never expect families to fully cover these expenses, which is why it fundraises and hires volunteers, but a $43 charge per night can be claimed back through a Federal Government scheme for those who have travelled 100km or more. A stay for three nights or more will be bulk-billed in full straight back to the Federal Government. Tables of 16 will be set up for the dinner, with a three-course meal provided for $25 per head, along with raffles, auctions, lucky draws, and other entertainment.

Double demerits over Easter: Double demerit points will be in force again over the Easter holiday period to improve safety on roads across the state. Parkes, Forbes and Lachlan Shire Councils’ Road Safety and Injury Prevention Officer, Melanie Suitor, said that the double demerit point period would commence on Thursday 24 March and conclude on Monday 28 March. “Double demerit points will apply to all speeding, seatbelt, mobile phone and motorcycle helmet offences this Easter holiday period,” she said. A free breakfast forum will be held at the Forbes Services Club on Wednesday 23 March to explore the current road safety and freight issues affecting the local heavy vehicle industry.

Have you been enjoying the cooler weather of late?
Rosemary Spackman: I am very glad to see the cooler weather. I don’t mind temperatures if they sit around the 30 – 35 degree mark but don’t like it much hotter than that.
Karyn Glennan: I am loving the cooler weather. I would love summer if it was this temperature all the time with no humidity. The humid weather of late has not been enjoyable at all.

Entertainers Flocking to Forbes
Forbes Services Club Manager David Fitzgerald says the great interest in entertainment in Forbes is what’s attracting famous acts to town. Famed country musician Kasey Chambers played at the club on Friday March 11, while well-known DJ ‘Jesabel’ (real name Jessica Heap) played at the Forbes Inn on Saturday March 19. The Forbes Services Club will also host popular American/Australian entertainer ‘Diesel’ (real name Mark Lizotte) in April, while country singer Adam Harvey will visit the club in May. The now famous ‘Vanfest’ festival will also be staged in Forbes in December, completing what should be a musical treat for the town this year. Mr Fitzgerald said that Forbes provided a warm atmosphere for acts to come to town, and this is why he felt they were happy to come. “I think Forbes treats the acts that come to town very well,” he said.

TERRACES, MOLONG
“There is a very warm and inviting atmosphere around town, but in addition to that, I believe there is a great following for live music here, and this would no doubt attract performers to come here.” Mr Fitzgerald said the recent Kasey Chambers concert at the Services Club auditorium was a huge success, with around 400 people filling the club to hear hits such as ‘Not Pretty Enough’ and ‘True Colours’. “It was her first visit to Forbes in quite a number of years, and pulling in such a big name is a great accolade to the town of Forbes,” he said. Mr Fitzgerald said his club was looking at getting a famous act once per month between now and the end of the year, depending on availability. He said the club was targeting former Daddy Cool and Mondo Rock front man Ross Wilson, famed country musician Troy Cassar-Daley, and fellow well-known country act Adam Brand.

Forbes Riding for the Disabled Committee is looking for new volunteers to take up executive positions within the committee. The current committee met last Wednesday 16th March for their AGM and with all executive positions open, there unfortunately were no nominations to replace the vacating committee members. All attended agreed to hold a special meeting on Wednesday 30th March 2016 to allow longer to entice new faces with new ideas to the committee. Since becoming a steering committee in October 2013 only a small amount of the original committee members remain. Coaches have been trained, agreements with Sahara Park have been settled on, volunteer days held, fundraising done for supplying specialist equipment to participants and students from Forbes High School registered and ready to attend. The issue is now to continue growing registered participants and to encourage volunteers to take on the lead roles such as President, Secretary and Treasurer. There are plenty of volunteers beyond the main roles but the current vacating committee are hoping to have their roles filled at the next meeting because if not the RDA Forbes Centre will have to fold and the funds raised will be sent to RDA NSW to be held in trust for two years. However, in that period if a committee reforms the raised funds will be accessible. After the two-year period if no interest is shown in recommencing the centre, the funds will go to the closest RDA in our area. The Special Meeting will be held on Wednesday 30th March at 6.00pm at the Forbes RSL. All interested people are invited to attend to ensure the centre is able to continue. By Joshua Matic

Union Club Presidents Lunch Hailed a Success
The cooler conditions were perfect for the Forbes Rugby Union Club’s Presidents Lunch held on Saturday. Almost 900 people filled the two large marques to make the 2016 lunch the largest to date. Club President, Tracey Prior, welcomed guests and gave a stirring speech about what the Forbes Rugby Club means to the community and how the members and players have contributed to make the Forbes Platypi so special. Life Membership was awarded to Andrew Hubbard who has been a huge part of the club for many years, as a player, clubman, mentor and previous president. Wayne O’Neill launched the Forbes Rugby Old Boys, or FROBS, organisation which is dedicated to encouraging previous players and supporters of the Forbes Platypi to remain actively involved in the club and give back to a club that has given them so much in the past. It was with a hint of sadness that Kim Muffett, announced his retirement from the Presidents lunch committee this year. The Presidents Lunch concept was Kim’s idea and what he thought was going to be a few people getting together for lunch exceeded all expectations in its first year and has continued to grow with each event. The committee will continue the tradi-

tion and would invite new members to join and be part of this great community event. Well known comedian, Jean Kitson, did not disappoint with her witty and entertaining presentation and afterwards mingled with guests. Randall Grayson controlled the sale of the auction items donated for the event and once again the generosity of the Forbes community was shown, with all items reaching prices in excess of expectations. Organisers and beneficiaries, such as the Forbes CanAssist Branch were delighted with the response and the profits raised will go a long way to continuing their great work.

Arts Society’s 2016 Takes Off
The Forbes Arts Society had its first display for the year during the week, with the exhibition “Ninety Seven” showing at Town Hall. “Ninety Seven” displayed the works of Grenfell-based artists Kathleen McCue and Nina Roderick, and was named according to the number of pieces on display, which was 97. Coincidentally, both Ms McCue and Ms Roderick went to art school together in 1997, however this played no role in coming to the name. The exhibition started last Wednesday and finished this afternoon (March 24). It was officially opened by Forbes Mayor Phyllis Miller last Saturday, with around 30 arts enthusiasts turning up for the opening. Forbes Arts Society Secretary Klara Ward said the exhibition offered more than just paintings, which displays normally wholly consist of. “Kathleen had lots of paintings of flowers, but she also had some really interesting sculptures, including one made out of farming pieces,” she said. “So it’s been great to have some more variety. Most of our displays only have paintings.” Ms McCue is known best for her upscale
paintings of flowers that focus on their form, sculptural characteristics, and play light on their petals. Ms Roderick has only recently moved into professional artwork, and before that enjoyed creating art as a relaxation technique, according to her exhibition biography. The exhibition displays paintings by her of wildlife amongst other images. Ms Ward said the Society was happy to be up and running for the year. Its other events for the year include a photography competition, Landscape of Forbes Shire art competition, and the Heritage Festival.

Access and Mobility Update Forbes Shire Council has identified the need to review and update the existing 2009 Pedestrian Access and Mobility plan with the aim of improving accessibility and increasing the participation of residents walking and cycling within the Shire. As a result, a Pedestrian and Cycling Strategy is being undertaken, which includes an audit of the facilities that are currently available. Representatives from ROSS Planning have met with a number of community groups and stakeholders recently to find out how they think pedestrian and cycling facilities can be improved. The representatives also presented a briefing to Councillors before the March Council Meeting to present the information gathered so far as well as gain an input from Councillors. Mayor Phyllis Miller said she was looking forward to seeing the draft report when it is presented at the May Council meeting. “We would like to have as many responses as we can from the community about our pedestrian and cycling facilities and there is an online survey that residents can complete,” Mayor Miller said. The survey is open until Monday, April 4 and residents can access it by visiting https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/communitysurvey_forbespedestrianandcyclingstrategy
The Right Paint for the Right Job While most of us focus on colour for our home’s exterior, in many ways it is more important to choose the right paint for the job. Basically you can choose between water based acrylic paints and oil based paints, with each being appropriate in different applications. Oil based paints can be used to give a high gloss finish to exterior trim work and they are a good choice when repainting over many layers of oil based paint on weather boards. Otherwise most
people use water based acrylic paints on exteriors. Here’s some tips on achieving the best painting job: • Ideal painting conditions are between 15- 30 degrees celcius, low to moderate humidity and little or no wind. • Avoid painting in hot, direct sun light because the surface temperature can be higher than air temperature. • Never paint below 10 degrees celcius
because it’s too cold for the paint film to form properly, and don’t take short cuts on surface preparation. Remove all flakey, loose and peeling paint with a scraper and sand surface. • Repair cracks, gaps and fill holes, and clean the surface down with soapy water. • After all surfaces have been cleaned, sanded and repaired, you can now start painting. Happy Easter!

Restructure at Cowal to Support Mine’s Future Evolution Mining (“Evolution” or the “Company”) confirmed recently it advised employees at its Cowal Gold Operation (“Cowal”) near West Wyalong in NSW of an organisational restructure necessary to support the long-term future of the mine. Evolution acquired Cowal in July 2015, and has since undertaken a careful review of the organisational structure as part of its overall development strategy to unlock the mine’s future potential. Evolution has implemented a new organisational structure which will streamline site management and eliminate role duplication to empower staff, promote collaboration between departments and enable more ef-
fective decision making. An important outcome of the restructure is the creation of a new Planning and Development Team entirely focussed on building Cowal’s future and extending the current Life of Mine. This team will be built predominantly by moving existing employees into newly created roles. The current Life of Mine at Cowal considers closure of the mine in 2024. To continue operating beyond this date, Evolution needs to secure the necessary environmental approvals and demonstrate the economic viability of expansion options. Realising new levels of efficiency at the mine will become pivotal to the viability of
these expansion options. The restructure incorporates changes to the senior level of the organisation, decentralisation of the maintenance department, and the creation of an Environment & Social Responsibility (ESR) team which will leverage opportunities for collaboration between the Environment and Community Relations functions. As a result, a number of roles will become redundant under the new structure. Evolution is aware of the impact that redundancies may have on individuals, their families and the broader community and is committed to supporting those affected through the transition.

FLANNERY’S Pharmacy Keep our Community Flu Free
Influenza, commonly known as the flu, is caused by a highly contagious virus that is spread by fluids produced during coughing and sneezing, or by direct contact with those fluids on surfaces. The flu virus has a unique ability to change its surface structure. This means that people’s immune systems might not be able to effectively fight the new version of the flu that circulates each season. This can cause widespread illness. Those who are at risk of complications should be immunised each year. Flu symptoms develop 1-3 days after infection and include: • high fever, chills and sweating • sore throat • runny or stuffed nose • weakness • headache • general muscle and joint pains (in the legs and back) • a non-productive (dry) cough that can later become more severe and productive Vaccinations are now available at Flannery’s and Life Pharmacies. This year as part of our annual flu vaccination clinic we will be supporting the Save the Children Vaccination Appeal. For every flu shot we administer in our Pharmacy, we will donate a vaccine to Save the Children organisation to vaccinate a child against measles. Vaccination clinics are being held at Flannery’s Pharmacy on 13th April and Life Pharmacy on 14th April so call in and make an appointment today or call Flannery’s Pharmacy on 68521111 or Life Pharmacy on 68522001. If you are over 65, are pregnant, are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander or have a chronic medical condition, make an appointment with your doctor to be eligible for a free vaccination. INSURANCE Matters
Motor Vehicle Insurance We are often asked about the range of options for motor vehicle insurances that are available to customers. One of the most common misconceptions is that Compulsory Third Party Insurance or your ‘Greenslip’ covers property damage. The Greenslip insurance will cover bodily injury to your passengers and/or people in the other vehicle (and sometimes the ‘at fault driver’ depending on the insurer) however there is no actual material damage cover for either vehicle. The material damage cover is contained in your motor vehicle insurance which is separate to your ‘Greenslip’. If you are responsible for an accident and do not have the correct insurances in place, you may be liable to pay for damages to any vehicle or property that was damaged. This can even be in the form of a repayment schedule over 10 or more years. Often younger drivers are incorrectly informed about what a greenslip will cover and get themselves into financial difficulties resulting from at fault car accidents. Regardless of any vehicle you drive it is very important to make sure that you and your family members are making informed decisions about the insurance options that are available. If you borrow or lend a vehicle remember that there may not be any insurance in place but the driver will still remain financially responsible should an at fault accident occur. There are many insurance options available for motor vehicles including: Comprehensive; Third Party Property Damage + Fire & Theft; Third Party Property Damage Only. The friendly team at Central West Insurance Group are always happy to guide you in the right direction.

Park Smarter to Avoid Theft from Vehicles
Theft from motor vehicles in Lachlan Local Area Command is usually opportunistic, meaning offenders target unlocked vehicles or vehicles with valuable items that can be seen. Senior Constable Daniel Greef says, “There are some simple things that everyone can do to minimise the risk of this happening. They are not time consuming and do not take much effort but are worth doing to protect your property”. Police are encouraging everyone to lock their vehicles when not in use – even for a short time – and if drivers must leave valuable items in vehicles, hide them so they are out of view. Handbags, wallets, cash, phones and tablets are hot items and if they can be seen in a car it greatly increases your risk of becoming a victim of crime. A stealing only takes a couple of seconds whether it is of property inside the vehicle or the vehicle itself. “If you have items on
the back of a ute that may be targeted, like tools or fridges, ensure they are secured to the vehicle”, Senior Constable Greef said. Never leave documents in your vehicle that contain your name and address, such as registration or insurance papers. The only item of identification that it is compulsory for you to have on you whilst driving is your driver’s licence. Always ensure that you take your driver’s licence with you when leaving your vehicle, as this is another item that contains your personal information. Try to park your vehicle in well-lit and well used areas. Cars are more vulnerable when they are parked in secluded or poorly lit areas. The more people that are around the area, the greater the amount of natural surveillance. If anybody notices any suspicious activity occurring around parked vehicles, contact your local police station.
Bushfire Danger Period Ending Soon The NSW Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS) will declare an end to the statutory Bush Fire Danger Period from Tuesday, 31 March 2016. Fire permits will no longer be required for the Forbes, Lachlan, Parkes and Weddin Local Government Areas. NSW RFS Superintendent Ken Neville said: “All members of the public must still abide by the law when conducting agricultural burns.” “Even though a fire permit is no longer a requirement, residents must still notify their neighbours and the local fire authority 24 hours before burning,” Superintendent Neville said.
“People should also have sufficient equipment to control and contain the fire to their property. Despite these milder conditions, there is always the potential for fires to threaten life, property and the environment, if not managed correctly.” Superintendent Neville said the local community should not become complacent to the danger of bush fire now that the danger period is officially over. Residents are reminded that “failing to notify” and “allowing fire to escape” are offences that are enforceable all year round and can incur large fines under the Rural Fires Act 1997.

Successful Day for Par Events

Netball Association Finals and Upgrades
The Forbes Netball Association have enjoyed a great week, securing a timeframe for their courts upgrades as well as making the finals of the Orange State League event. Resurfacing of four courts at the FNA’s base at Stephan Field will begin on Monday April 4, after Forbes Shire Council resolved to asphalt overlay and line marking remedial works at its February meeting. The works will be done during the April school holidays, when no netball will take place, and will be completed in time for the Forbes Netball Carnival on May 1. The four courts to be re-sealed have been unplayable in recent times, according to FNA representative coach Robyn Kenny, and she said the upgrades will vastly improved conditions for netball. “We had a very positive meeting with Council on March 15 and I’m happy to say that our courts will be re-sealed in the April school holidays,” she said. “We were originally going to look at getting all of our courts re-sealed, but five of the courts still have a good coating on top so we thought we would leave them and just upgrade the other four.” “As well as resealing those courts, all of our courts will also be widened, so we will have more space as well.” “It’ll be great having our new courts ready to go for our competition after the holidays, as well as our carnival at the start of May.” Last year Forbes Shire Council also funded an upgrade to the Association’s adminis-
tration building at Stephan Field, while the new amenities block there was completed last week. Meanwhile, the FNA division two open team finished fourth in the Orange State League competition, qualifying for an elimination final meeting with Bathurst on 3 April. After defeating Cobar and Cowra, and losing to Bathurst by only five goals in round one a fortnight ago, they lost both matches by comfortable margins to Orange and Dubbo in round two last week. Kenny said she was still impressed with her girls’ effort, but conceded the Orange and Dubbo teams were too strong for them on the day. “The girls tried very hard with limited training throughout the week, so I am happy with the effort they put in,” she said. “Orange and Dubbo were just too fast, fit and strong for us I think.” Their finals opponent Bathurst are undefeated, and finished first in the competition. Dubbo and Orange finished second and third respectively. Kenny said her players were confident of pushing Bathurst right to the finish line after leading them at three quarter time in their last encounter. “We’ll be trying our best out there. We had too many turnovers last week but if we can play how we did in the first week and hold on to the ball we’ll play much better,” she said.
On Saturday 19 March competition at the Forbes Golf Club was for the 4BBB Mixed Par event, and an Individual Par event run in conjunction. The first three placegetters In the Mixed Par event will go forward to the District Final, to be held at Peak Hill. The winners and lucky runners-up teams were Phil & Shirley Dukes (with a score of +8), Niel & Carolyn Duncan (+6) on count back, and Andy Cogswell and Christine Davies (+6). The reserves will be Mike & Tanya Spice, also with +6. The Individual Par event saw scores less pretty than the Mixed Par events. Paul Kay scored +4 to take the win, only just ahead of Neil McMillan on +3. Sunday was the regular Stableford Medley. The day was enjoyed by a healthy bunch of players. Bruce Carpenter reversed his form from Saturday recorded 43 points. Ben Webb came in as runner-up with 39 points. Both players had birdies to score 4-pointers. The NTP’s went to: 9th – R Taylor; 18th – B Shields. Neither got their ‘2’.The ball sweep went to 33 on count back, with recipients being: 35 - Larry Gillespie (Stonecutters Ridge), Rob Webb; 33 – Ray Taylor. As usual with the 18-hole events, the contest was for the Coles-Miller Shield. Local knowledge, and weight of numbers, helped as Forbes won with 198 (19 players), ahead of Parkes 173 (16), Condobolin 164 (8), W Wyalong 160 (7), Cowra 155 (8) and Grenfell 123 (5). The one visitor beat himself in a play-off. And here is the news: Daniel is running a Junior School Holiday Camp on 11 and 12 April. If you have a child, or know of any school children who may be interested, please contact Daniel at the Pro Shop 6851 1554. The LCDGA Pennants will be held at Parkes on Sunday 17 April. This is open to all Club players, with those who represented the Club in this year’s Pennants comp especially encouraged to attend. The more players we have the better our chances of getting another “blue flag” on the wall. By Short Putt
