Kershaw Looks to Get on With Business as Usual
Acting Forbes Shire Council General Manager Max Kershaw says it will be business as usual in the Council’s General Manager office, after he was appointed to act in the position. Forbes Shire Council appointed Mr Kershaw in confidence at its last Council meeting on March 18, and he started work on Tuesday this week (March 29). He has been hired on a rolling, weekly contract, and will perform his duties until early August at the latest, by which time Council hopes to have appointed a new permanent General Manager. Advertisements for the position are expected to be sent out in the coming weeks. Mr Kershaw brings with him many years of rural council management experience,
with his most recent job being the GM at the Harden Shire Council. He retired from the position around 12 months ago, and has been brought out of retirement to work in Forbes. He told The Forbes Phoenix he planned on ensuring communication through the Forbes Shire Council was up to scratch in testing times of possible Council amalgamations. “My plan is just to keep things moving along without any interruption. It will be business as usual,” he said. “There are obviously amalgamations on the plate with a lot of rural councils at the moment. I’ve worked through three council amalgamations in the past.” Continued on page 2

MAYORAL NOTES I hope everyone had a lovely Easter and a nice break. The Camel Races on Good Friday were great and the numbers were excellent. Even though Orange has their Camel Races on Easter Sunday now it doesn’t make a difference to our numbers, it actually makes it more viable for the camel owners by having two meetings over one weekend. The Federal Court decided on Tuesday that the Local Government NSW Board has been dissolved and a new vote for the 13 board members, including myself, will be conducted by a postal ballot. Our Acting General Manager Max Kershaw started with Council on Tuesday and has a long and highly respected career in Local Government. We look forward to working with him over the next few weeks to months and I welcome him to Forbes on behalf of the community. Seniors Week starts today and there are plenty of activities to celebrate. Among the events is a Seniors Expo at the Forbes Youth and Community Centre and a concert, Songs of Love and Loss, on Sunday at the Forbes Town Hall. There are also a number of come and try days and morning teas at the Mater and Jemalong Residential Village. Next Wednesday the Pollie Pedal will be stopping over in Forbes. They are arriving at about 3.30pm in Victoria Park so come down and show your support. There are a number of politicians taking part including Tony Abbott. Have a great week, stay safe and God bless. Mayor, Cr Phyllis Miller OAM
“It’s so important to communicate well with staff, especially with so much happening in local councils at the moment.” Mr Kershaw brings with him an impressive CV that shows no less than 42 years of service to local government in rural NSW. A Parkes born and bred man, he has worked for the Parkes Shire Councils, as well as the councils of the Tenterfield, Yallaroi, Gunnedah, Warren and Narrabri shires. One might question what brought him out of retirement after so many years of service. He retired to sunny Scarborough, north of Brisbane, in Queensland, but he said family and his passion for local government brought him to Forbes.
THUMBS UP... THUMBS DOWN
THUMBS UP To the organisers of the Forbes Farmers Markets who do such a great job each and every time.
THUMBS UP To the Forbes Sport and Recreation Club for a great Easter Bowls event last weekend.
THUMBS UP To the Forbes Widows Support Group for all of the fantastic work they do in our community. Malicious or defamatory submissions will not be accepted. The opinions and views or readers submitting Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down are not necessarily the views of the staff and management of the Forbes Phoenix. “I have a great affinity to rural councils, and my sister and her family live here in Forbes,” he said. “I have also known Mayor Phyllis Miller for quite some time now, and I was really chuffed when she asked me to come and work for the Forbes Shire Council.” “You sort of hit the wall when you retire, so I thought I could work one last job. I consulted the opportunity with my wife, and she said I should do it.’ While he will only be in the job for about three months, he said he would like to see economic development and youth employment in Forbes improve. He said Forbes was a “pretty” town with a passionate community that set its own agenda, and looked forward to working with it.

Parkes Decor Shoppe has been a cornerstone of design in Parkes that has spanned four decades after it was established at the southern end of Clarinda Street in 1975. Originally a wallpaper and lighting centre, the business moved with the times, beginning to sell curtains, blinds and awnings after wallpaper began to go out of fashion. Nowadays, window furnishings consist of a major part of the shops operations. Parkes Décor Shoppe is the brainchild of Barry and Margaret Robinson and although Barry sadly passed away ten years ago the business is still going strong with Margaret at the helm of an excellent team of four casual staff. For 20 years she has regularly covered areas like Peak Hill, Cudal, Orange, Grenfell, Young, Eugowra, Forbes, Condobolin and smaller outlying areas. “We pride ourselves on our solid customer service and attention to detail,” says Margaret. “It’s what we are best at, we follow up on everything and I have great staff.” “The service we offer is great as we’ve been here for 40 years, and over many years we’ve completed a large number of commercial and domestic jobs.” Big changes are coming in July, as the business rebrands itself. It has already been repainted, and has a new website. The inside of the store will be re-fitted as well. Parkes Décor is a member of Lighting Network, and supply lots of local electricians. They have a deal with ceiling fans at present, with a good warranty for them. For more information head over and have a chat with Margaret and her team at 202-204 Clarinda Street Parkes.

Wildcare Desperate For More Volunteers Young Wildcare volunteer Lynda Oehm has been volunteering on and off for the last 30 years for Wildcare, and knows a thing or two about looking after kangaroos. In fact, she has looked after around 300 injured kangaroos and kangaroo joeys in that time, but with very few volunteers in the Central West caring for Wildcare at the moment, she said she is inundated with animals. Close to Forbes, there are currently volunteers based in Goologong, but none in Forbes itself. Wildcare is an independent organisation that looks after injured wildlife, with carers that volunteer for them being specially trained to look after different types of animals. Wildcare is a 24/7 service, and generally, takes injured wildlife into its care when members of the public, local rangers and local emergency services report the injured animals.
Animals’ injuries are assessed in the first instance, with veterinary attention brought in if required, and then volunteer carers look after the animals and maintain their health until they are assessed to be ready for the wild again. On average, the service receives around 2000 calls a year. Common circumstances include dog and cat attacks on wildlife, motor vehicle collisions, and animals getting caught in netting or fencing. More miscellaneous situations involve wombats getting stuck in bathtubs, brown snakes in rat traps, and possums in car bonnets. Ms Oehm specialises in looking after injured kangaroos and wallabies, and after years of constantly having new animals come to her, said it was important other people come on board. “Looking after these kangaroos isn’t like having a pet. They’re not pets. It’s like raising a child. They need full time care,” she

said. “We desperately need more volunteer carers, especially for birds, possums and reptiles. It’s becoming too much for the four of us that do it at the moment.” Wildcare liaison officer for Young, Sandra Latham, said licensed shooters (euthanasia) were also being sought. Anyone interested in assisting Wildcare is asked to call 6299 1966.

Art Display Opens at Forbes Hospital
The Forbes First Exhibition has been installed in the corridors of the Forbes Hospital. This exhibition is part of the Culture and Arts Program, which has been integrated into the hospital’s redevelopment. “We published a call out to local artists and 14 artists replied,” said Arts OutWest Arts and Health Coordinator Christine McMillan. “I would like to thank all of the artists who have contributed to the exhibition, which will make a big difference to the corridors of the hospital. The walls are transformed by bright and cheerful works.” Lachlan Health Service Manager, Liz Mitchell, is also looking forward to seeing the facility brought to life with the artwork from locals. “It’s fabulous to have new equipment and facilities, but the Forbes Hospital redevelopment is also about making it a more vibrant and friendly place for all our communities. Integrating the arts is a great way of achieving this,” said Ms Mitchell. “Staff members Sue Dingwell and Michelle Horton have work hanging in the Forbes First exhibition,” Ms Mitchell said. Both Sue and Michelle’s works are based on animals - Sue’s work ‘Horse’ adds colour to the corridor and the detail draws you into the painting. Michelle’s work ‘Shine
Bright’ is the first mirror background mosaic she has made, after 5 years of mosaic making, with a splash of colour in the body of an elephant. Thirty artworks will be on display. A broad range of mediums are used in the works, including pastels, water colour, acrylic, mixed media, oils and wax and ink. Many of the images are inspired by the Forbes landscape, from historical buildings to the rural Forbes canola season. Wattle flowers to deciduous leaves represent the broad species range of plants in the area. Karen Ritchie, who has three pieces in the exhibition, said the Forbes wetlands provided a perfect backdrop to explore, in colour and line, the movement and fleetingness of water. “No two views are the same as colour and shape and shadows are reliant on landform and objects surrounding the body of water. Acrylics and ink provide a fluid consistency to try and replicate the nature of water, while the trees provide an illusion of solidity,” she said. The artworks are on display until June 15 and can be seen by anyone who visits the hospital during this time. A similar exhibition is currently also running at the new Parkes Hospital.
Andrews Family Excels at Easter Bowls The Forbes Sport & Recreation Club hosted the Annual Easter Lawn Bowls Carnival over the weekend with thirty-four teams from all over NSW competing in the Pairs and Fours competitions. A large majority of the teams hailed from the Sydney Metropolitan area and were impressed with the excellent facilities the Forbes club had to offer. The competition is for all male teams and Forbes was well represented in all divisions. The Andrews family featured strongly in the pairs and the fours with Jarrod Andrews & Grandfather Don Drabsch making it to the Semi-finals of the pairs along with Mitchell Andrews who teamed up with Bruce Williams, also making it to the Semi-
finals. Jarrod and Mitchell then competed in the Fours with their father Scott and Grandfather, Don Drabsch and made their way to the final on Sunday evening. Spectators were kept entertained with some very strong bowls but a very strong and slick Belrose Team edged out the locals to win.

Another Successful Year For SOYA
IMAGE: The Forbes Magpies league tag girls will join their male counterparts in Friday night football tonight at Spooner Oval. Source: Facebook.
Magpies To Host Derby Trial Night
The first local derby of 2016 will be staged tonight at Spooner Oval when the Forbes Magpies take on the Parkes Spacemen in one of their final hit-outs before the season-proper. Three grades will feature from 6pm, including the women’s league tag, under 18s, and a senior side made up of reserve grade and first grade players. With the Spacemen being the closest rival to the Magpies the game should still be a tight affair despite it only being a trial match. The games will be played in 40-minute halves. For the senior players, it will be their second-last trial before next weekend’s match against Wellington in Wellington, before their Group 11 round one bye. Their first game will be against Dubbo Macquarie at Spooner Oval on April 23. Ahead of tonight’s trial, Magpies President Greg Grogan said his men were still
carrying some minor injuries, but with some players sitting out, it would still be a good hit-out against Parkes. “We’ve got the first grade and reserve grade squads combining for the senior team, so it will be a good chance to see what sort of depth we have,” he said. The Magpies made the semi-final at the Parkes Nines event two weeks ago, beating Wellington and Dubbo West Side before falling to Dubbo CYMS, and Grogan said this confidence would hold them in good stead moving forward. “Nines is completely different, but it was still a good showing of fitness from the players,” he said. “From here it’s just a matter of avoiding more injuries. The best teams in the competition normally have the least injuries.” The Magpies will hold their season launch on Friday April 15 at the Sport and Recreation Club, and will combine their juniors and seniors at the launch for the first time.
The Forbes Sportsperson of the Year Association enjoyed another very successful year in 2015. Many of the bodies of the sport played within the town or in its surrounding areas, nominated individuals or teams for our annual presentation awards night held in February. Those sporting bodies that don’t nominate any individual or team for the relevant award, I believe miss the opportunity to congratulate them for their input into their sport throughout the year. To be nominated by your peers must surely be a highlight of your sporting year. Firstly, may I thank the SOYA committee (be it small in number) for their hard work, support and general good nature that has made the years involvement a pleasure. Special thanks must go to Anita Morrison for her outstanding work as Secretary and Sue Uphill in her role as Treasurer. As I stated in previous years, their organisational skills are an absolute credit to them, and a bonus to us. Secondly, thanks to all the sporting clubs that support our organisation. Thirdly, thank you to all the local businesses who so generously supported us financially throughout the year and on our presentation night. Without your support we would not be able to exist. Fourthly, to the judges. A difficult job, but done with what I believe to be very fair and unbiased decisions. Whilst talking of our presentation night, may I thank “The Girls” for running the night on their own due to all the “Male” committee members having work commitments out of Forbes on the evening. The guest speaker was well received, we thank Anita again for organising, Tom Cusack and wish him well in his pursuit of glory at the Rio Olympics as a member of the Australian Rugby 7’s team. Lastly, thanks and congratulations to all the sportsmen and women of Forbes for being such “Good Sports”. Hopefully gaining the enjoyment and satisfaction that sport is able to provide makes it all worthwhile for the hard work at training and playing. Lets hope that 2016 unearths much sporting talent that we can celebrate at our next SOYA Awards Night. By Andrew Norton-Knight President Forbes SOYA
