Youth Recognised At Awards Evening

Forbes Shire Council held the 2016 Youth Week Awards on Thursday 5th April to acknowledge and recognise the positive contributions our youth make within the Forbes Community. Twenty three nominations were received and were judged by an independent judging panel of community members. Forbes Mayor Phyllis Miller said the standard of each nomination was very high. The Young Sports Volunteer Award acknowledged the dedication and the many volunteer hours Jack Piercy contributes to the Forbes Netball Association and Forbes High School. Courtney Ward received the School Youth Award for her excellence at school, her strong leadership skills and for her strong community spirit. The Further Education Excellence Award was taken out by Aiden Clarke for his dedication and pas-

sion for his studies in Early Childhood. The Brighter Future Award recognises a young person who is endeavouring to make a positive change to their lives and Blake Harrison was a very worthy recipient. The calibre of the nominees suggested for all categories was particularly high and for the first time the judges were compelled to award Maddi Collits a Highly Commended in the Major Youth & Community Award before announcing Liam Bosma as the overall winner. Liam’s extensive involvement in the Youth Advisory Committee and Spectacular Screenings over the past four years as well as being named the Central West Volunteer of the Year in 2015 were just a few of the factors which made him the winner. McCormack To Campaign In Forbes MAYORAL NOTES Last week, the Local Government Grants Commission, led by the Hon Jenny Gardiner, former MLC, along with Graeme Fleming and Alan McCormack, visited Forbes. The Grants Commission is responsible for the distribution of our Financial Assistance Grants, which is Federal funding. On the subject of grant funding, Forbes Shire Council is very committed to our sporting grounds but without some continued funding from the Federal Government, it is really hard to maintain or enhance our grounds. We will be lobbying for dedicated pool of money for rural and regional councils to continue to deliver sporting venues to the community as sport brings many social and health benefits and is a fabric of country life. On Saturday, we had a welcome to Forbes barbecue for six students and two teachers from Jiangsu Agri-Animal Husbandry Vocational College in China. They are in Forbes as part of a study tour with TAFE Western. We hope they will be the first of many groups who will be visiting Forbes over the coming years and making use of JREC. We had our interviews for our new General Manager on Monday and at the time of writing this I am unable to give you more information, but I certainly will next week! Just a reminder that we have a date change for our next Council meeting and it will be at 9am on Tuesday, May 17 in the Council Chambers. Everyone is welcome to attend. Have a great week, stay safe and God bless. Mayor, Cr Phyllis Miller OAM

The Nationals’ Federal Member for Riverina Michael McCormack is looking forward to the challenges and opportunities of the eight-week election campaign. Mr McCormack will be campaigning in Forbes and Parkes, with the Riverina electorate to incorporate these two shires after the next election. Speaking after Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull announced 2 July as the date for the double dissolution poll, Mr McCormack said he had the energy and experience to continue in his role as Riverina’s local MP. “The Nationals in Government have delivered a great deal over the past three years and I have worked hard to gain a number of significant local projects particularly in the past six months,” Mr McCormack said.

The Riverina boundaries now take in eight new shires and Mr McCormack said he was keen to get out and about in the new areas to meet as many new people as possible. “I know a lot of people from the new Shires of the electorate through my days as a newspaper editor and in my business. I have been a local MP and Minister and have visited these places a number of times since the new boundaries were announced,” Mr McCormack said. “Last week’s Federal Budget was an economic plan not just for the nation, but presented excellent opportunities for jobs and growth for regional areas, especially the Riverina and Central West”, Mr McCormack said.

QUESTION of the week tive - ‘I’m Counting On You’. National child restraints laws have been in effect in NSW since 2010. Children are required to be seated in an approved child restraint, appropriate for their size until they are seven years of age. Penalties occur for failing to comply. The second instalment of child restraint checking days are scheduled to take place in Parkes, Forbes and Condobolin towards the end of this month.

Andrew Gee’s visit to the new Forbes Preschool on Friday May 6

Andrew Gee pops into new preschool: Member for Orange Andrew Gee called in to Forbes Preschool to say a quick hello last Friday, during a visit to Forbes, to see how their move in to the new preschool went. He was certainly very impressed. The NSW Government provided $1.29 million for the construction of the new preschool building. It is expected Mr Gee will officially open the new premises in the coming weeks. Harvey Norman Car Park Sale: Harvey Norman Parkes had a cracker Car Park Sale last weekend. Massive amounts of stock from the warehouse was cleared out at super low prices. Coffee and lamp tables, tallboys, bedside tables and outdoor furniture almost walked out, with Cameron Robinson remarking that it was the biggest sale they’ve had in six years; even better than Christmas! Ex-demonstration and display stock was sold off, with bargains galore. In the store itself everything was marked down, and there were many happy customers. Continued child restraint project: Parkes, Forbes and Lachlan Shire Councils are preparing, again, to hold free child restraint checking days across the Shires as a part of their major road safety initia-

Rain does not deter walkers: The welcome rain did not deter more than 60 participants who registered for the Forbes Mother’s Day Classic Event on Sunday 8th May. The Mother’s Day Classic Walk in Forbes saw walkers complete the 4.2km circuit of Lake Forbes commencing at the Lions Park. Established in 1998, the Mother’s Day Classic Walk or Run, raises funds for Breast Cancer Research. The inaugural events in Melbourne and Sydney attracted approximately 3,200 and are now becoming an integral part of Mother’s Day morning with more than 135,000 Australians getting up early to walk or run to raise money for breast cancer research.

Support For Fiji

IMAGE: Concerned business owners address crossing safety issues

Crossing In Safety

Concerned business owners, and representatives from Forbes Shire Council met at the pedestrian crossing on Rankin Street on Wednesday May 4 to discuss the amendments to the crossing. Acting General Manager, Max Kershaw, Director of Engineering, John Zannes, and Manager of Technical Services, David Timlin, met with business owners to discuss their concerns. Max Kershaw started by apologising for the lack of previous consultation and resolved to answer questions, and to address concerns. Business owners are concerned that the extension of the kerb is not safe passage for cars speeding through, and it also takes up car spaces. Martin Cahill from Cahill Footwear voiced his concern about trucks getting around the corner, “When a truck parks in front of the extended kerb, cars can’t see around it and have to pull out into the other lane to pass.” All business owners reiterated that safety is their first concern, but some were ada-

mant that the extension of the kerb was not the best option to optimise safety. The issue of the speed limit in the street was voiced, with the suggestion of reducing the speed limit to 40 km/ h. Some of the business owners were in support of the amendments, stating that any safety measures were desirable, and even if the kerb extension wasn’t ideal, it was better than it had been. Mr Cahill asked for a show of hands for those who do not support the kerb extension, and the majority raised their hands. Mr Kershaw confirmed that the crossing amendments would go ahead, and reassured business owners that the rumours of Rankin Street being closed, were false. While the meeting may not have produced an outcome favourable by all, it was an important time for business owners to have a voice, and have their concerns directly addressed by the Council. By Annelise Stephenson

During the recent devastation of Tropical Cyclone Winston, the Category 5 storm in Fiji, forty lives were lost, and thousands of homes, hospitals, schools, and water supplies were severely damaged. Tyrepower’s suppliers generously donated a range of items to be auctioned off to those in attendance at the Tyrepower International Conference in Fiji. The auction was so successful, that $86,975 was raised, with more donations still to be received from the Tyrepower Dealer Network. Tyrepower will donate these funds to the Makogai Primary School, located on an island of approximately 8 square kilometres in the Lomaiviti Group which houses 38 children. The school was severely damaged in the cyclone, with students being left to attend class under only a tarpaulin. The donated funds will assist the Makogai Primary School in rebuilding their classrooms and facilities. Tyrepower CEO, David Wilson said, “We are extremely touched that our Australasian Dealer Network banded together to raise funds for those in Fiji who have been left with very little following the devastating natural disaster in February.”

Big Dry Ends For Forbes The big dry that has engulfed all of Australia seems to be coming to an end for Forbes and surrounds, with around 80mm of rain falling during the last two weekends. It comes after the Bureau of Meteorology officially announced there was a 50% chance of a La Nina weather pattern forming later this year, and in what is great news for local farmers, current weather models suggest the next three months will be wetter than usual. Temperatures should also remain above average. La Nina is basically the opposite of El Nino- the weather pattern that has brought Australia bone-dry conditions over the last six months. Bureau of Meteorology climatologist Agatha Turkey said much rain had fallen right across the Central West region. “For the most part April was a very dry month, but it finished off with some good rainfall right at the end,” she said. “We’ve already seen good rainfall so far this month as well, and the further west you go, some areas have already received their May average rainfall.” “It’s been a good start to the month, especially on the back of a dry February, March and April, and the couple of months preceding those.”

Dragon Boat Days

It has still been a drier than average start to the year for Forbes, with 25 days of recorded rainfall seeing 178.2mm fall, compared with the historical average of 185.2mm to May. But with the tropical Pacific Ocean currently transitioning from warmer waters to cooler waters, Ms Turkey said El Nino was on its way out, and that neutral conditions or La Nina would follow in the second half of the year. “The Indian Ocean is still quite warm, so this could bring some good falls for local farmers across winter,” she said. The Forbes Dragon Boat Club held their Business House Challenge last Sunday. Members from Parkes, Forbes and surrounds enjoyed the great weather by the lake. Four local businesses participated, which involved being coached in the skills of dragon-boat paddling, culminating in racing each other for the championship trophy. The four teams, Rabobank, Forbes Shire Council, Crowe Horwath and Saint Laurence’s made extreme efforts – with Rabobank proudly holding up the prized cup at the end of the day, whilst generously donating back the monetary prize. “It was wonderful to see how the camaraderie built up among our staff at the Shire Council in the lead up to the day,” said Michelle Quigley, whose team arrived at the challenge garbed impressively in bright dragon-backed team shirts. The smooth running of the day was thanks to the skills of Wendy Green and her subcommittee, including Chris Sweeney who did a brilliant job as MC, co-ordinating the day to run without a hitch. The day showcased the community spirit of the Forbes Lachlan Dragons along with their partners and associates as they banded together to play their roles of paddlers, officials or breakfast chefs. MONTHLY Livestock Roundup Welcome to our first monthly livestock roundup, each month we plan to keep you up to date with the events of the livestock market. Over the past two weeks we have seen some significant rain which in turn has seen livestock numbers slow and prices trend north. In the cattle market we have started to see positive gains in most grades, with the rain about I think restocking cattle will be set to some strong competition and heavy kill cattle will slowly rise to see heavy steers back around $3.00 p/kg and heavy cows from $2.20 to $2.50 c/kg mark. On the sheep and lamb market we are starting to see some big gains. With numbers slowing over the past couple of weeks we are seeing good trade lambs making $5.20 to $5.70 c/kg , heavy lambs making from $4.80 to $5.40 c/kg. Mutton has seen some very strong competition with most grades fetching well over the $3.00 mark. For any other information on market trends or marketing options don’t hesitate to call. RURAL ROUNDUP Private Kills Available At Forbes Central Butchery

Jemalong Wool Pty Ltd Weekly Market Update

Week ending: 5 May 2016 A drop in the official cash rate by the Reserve Bank to 1.75% (a record low) triggered a further decline in the exchange rate this week and as a result wool prices reacted with a continuance of the recent rally. The opening day recorded the best result with rises of 30 - 40 cents. This pattern repeated on Thursday but the results were more moderate with closing quotes that were 5 to 10 cents higher. Merino skirtings rose equally each day to close around 40 cents higher. Crossbreds had a fairly quite week, firming 5 to 10 cents for the sale. Merino Cardings made progressive increases to close the sale 10 to 20 cents dearer. 36,000 bales were offered for sale this week; a slight increase on last sale and a similar total which is expected for the following 2 weeks.

The Forbes Central Butchery is your number one option for all things meat, and the business is providing private kill services. Whilst private kills are not provided by all butchers, Shannon Birmingham, owner of Forbes Central Butchery is providing this service. “All the local farmers have to do is have your animal sent to Cowra Abattoirs, and we do the rest”. All part of the service is local home deliveries, and supplying to local pubs, clubs and hospitality outlets. One of their specialities is their award winning Regional Sausage Wing, plus they sell farm eggs, jams and sauces and Ploughmans Hill olive oil and balsamic vinegar.

Why You Should See A Solicitor To Prepare Your Will

Everyone loves the idea of getting something for nothing and in this case you can. The NSW Trustee & Guardian will prepare your Will for free, providing you appoint the NSW Trustee & Guardian as your executor! A solicitor most often charges for preparing your Will. However, a solicitor will also consider whether you need an Enduring Power of Attorney and an appointment of Enduring Guardian. You can nominate your own executor, such as your husband or wife, adult children or a trusted friend or relative. Your executor will then be someone who has knowledge of your personal circumstances. In the event of your death, a solicitor will charge for preparing the Probate Grant from the Supreme Court, just as will the NSW Trustee & Guardian if appointed as your executor. The solicitor’s scale fees for obtaining the Probate Grant are much less than the charges made by the NSW Trustee & Guardian. Here is a comparison of fees charged. Value of Estate Assets $500,000 $1 Million $1.5 Million

NSW Trustee & Guardian $12,100.00 $17,600.00 $23,100.00

Solicitor’s Scale of Costs $3,558.50* $6,017.00* $6,930.00*

*Solicitors’ scale fees are for obtaining a grant of probate. There may be some additional fees payable for administering the estate. You can talk to your Solicitor about their fees.

Magpies To Focus On Attack

Rising Football Stars Selected In NSW Country Teams

Three of our young local rugby league players, Mitchell Andrews, Matt Nicholson and Charlie Staines, were selected into NSW Country Representative teams after playing in the grand finals of the AAMI Country Championships in Tamworth on the weekend. Mitchell Andrews, along with five of his Western Rams U/18’s team mates were selected in the NSW U/18’s Country side that will compete in Perth later in the year in a curtain raiser to the Manly v’s Warriors clash. The U/18 Western Rams had success in the lead up to the grand final under the watchful eye of local coach, Cameron Greenhalgh, but were unable to overcome the strength of the Bidgee Bulls on the day. The U/16 Western Rams had a closer finish against the Greater Northern Tigers, tied at 12 all with just 20 seconds to go the Tigers scored to take claim the trophy. The

loss in the grand final did not deter selectors from naming six of the Rams in the NSW U/16’s Country Team including two of Forbes’ own, Matt Nicholson and Charlie Staines. Both players and their families were elated with their selections and excited at the prospect of being coached by former NRL player, Andrew Ryan, before travelling to Samoa in October. Both boys have schoolboy representative commitments at Red Bend Catholic College for Matt and Forbes High School for Charlie along with club commitments at Red Bend Junior Rugby League and Forbes Magpies Junior Rugby League that they will coordinate with the extra representative schedule. Matt has also signed with St George for 2017 and will continue to put in the hard yards with the hope of turning his passion into a career.

The Forbes Magpies will head into the Group 11 general bye this weekend in third place on the ladder, after going down to frontrunners Dubbo CYMS 34-12 at Spooner Oval last Sunday. They will next face the Narromine Jets on May 22 in a battle to keep their place in the top three. Having easily accounted for Dubbo Westside and the Wellington Cowboys in the first two rounds, errors cost them in their battle for top sport against CYMS. An injury to fullback Chris Kirby in the first five minutes didn’t help either, and his replacement also went down injured some time later. Key players Zack Merritt and Mitch Bourke were also missing from the match due to injury, but it is hoped they will return for the Narromine clash after the bye round. However injuries aside, Magpies President Greg Grogan said there were too many dropped balls, and that ultimately cost them. “It rained as well so it was a very wet and slippery game, and that didn’t help either,” he said. “It looked like it would be 12-all at half time but then CYMS scored right on the buzzer. The first 15 minutes of the second half was still close, but they dominated us with their kicking game in the second 15 minutes and scored a few tries.” “Our defence wasn’t too bad though. I think CYMS just turned up better on the day.” Narromine have had two good wins this season, and Grogan said they would prove tough opponents, but was confident the Magpies would find form again and get the win. Kick-off will be at 2.30pm on May 22 at Spooner Oval.

More Upgrades For Forbes Netball

The Forbes Netball Association will be able to upgrade one of their Stephan Field netball courts thanks to a $25,000 State Government grant. Member for Orange Andrew Gee visited Forbes last Friday to officially award the grant to Forbes Netball Association’s Robyn Kenny and Jane O’Malley. The grant comes from the NSW Government’s 2015/16 Local Sport Grant program. “It’s extremely important quality sporting and recreational facilities are available and complemented with well-run programs if we are to encourage people to lead a more healthy and active lifestyle,” Mr Gee said.

Mr Gee believes the funding announced today will ensure that opportunities are provided for as many people as possible and allow them to gain the benefits that come from living an active, healthy lifestyle. The Forbes and District Tennis Club and the Forbes Dragon Boat Club were also the beneficiaries of state funding. The tennis club received $1,932 for the purchase and installation of new bench seating, while the dragon boat club was granted $4,000 to purchase a Champion 22 crew dragon boat and boat trolley.
