AT THE BOX OFFICE with Brayden MOVIE REVIEW
MAYORAL NOTES Some of our community groups and organisations have had great success with grant applications recently. Just last week 10 groups in the Forbes Shire who applied for the Department of Social Services Volunteer Equipment Grants Program were successful! The groups were Corinella Multipurpose Community Centre, Forbes Museum, Forbes Magpies Rugby League Club, Forbes Men’s Shed, Forbes Family History Group, Wiradjuri Dreaming Centre, the Forbes Sports and Recreation Club, Forbes Neighbourhood Trust, the Bedgerabong Showground, Racecourse and Recreation Ground Trust and the Forbes Amateur Swimming Club. That’s almost $37,000 in funding across those groups, which is excellent. Speaking of grants, the Forbes Basketball Association were successful in receiving $3949 from the NSW Government’s Community Building Partnership and $6500 from the Federal Government’s Building Stronger Communities Program for the lights at the courts. I turned the lights on for the first time on Monday night and it was just fantastic to see all the kids there playing basketball. There are some new businesses in town, which is great to see including K & H Interior Design, Eyewear Specs, Income Tax Professionals, Andarich Reptiles, Pets and Produce and we also have Dominos coming to town. Last night was the awards presentation of the 2016 Waste 2 Art competition and the exhibition will be open today, tomorrow and Sunday at the Forbes Town Hall. It’s definitely worth a look as there are some great artworks that have been created with waste. Have a great week, stay safe and God bless. Mayor, Cr Phyllis Miller OAM
The Daughter
This month’s movie review is on the film The Daughter. This film is based on Ibsen’s play and book The Wild Duck. The Daughter is based in a rural town called Tumut in NSW where the locals were once all employed by the Timber Mill. The Mill was once owned by the wealthy Henry Neilson, who decided, after 100 years, to shut the doors. One of the locals that was affected is Oliver Finch who had worked at the Mill all of his life and happened to be best friends with Henry’s son Christian. Christian returns from living many years in America for the wedding of his father Henry

and his housekeeper Anna that didn’t quite go as planned. Christian reveals to his father Henry that he is aware of the lifelong Secrets & Lies that Henry had kept and the major effects they would have on the whole town including Oliver if they we’re all revealed. I found this storyline really hard to follow at times and still don’t understand what the duck symbolised in the film. This is a mind-blowing film full of twists and turns, heartbreaks and confusion. The coarse language is not suitable for young children. Given the above, I would give this movie a rating of three out of five stars. While it has some interesting elements, it can be hard to follow perfectly. By Brayden Dukes-Rankmore

‘Waste 2 Art’ Competition Goes On Display
Forbes’ recent ‘Waste 2 Art’ competition will go on display at Forbes Town Hall this weekend, after competition winners were announced during the week. Judging took place on Tuesday for this year’s Waste 2 Art competition and the winners were announced at the official opening at 5.30pm on Thursday, May 26 at the Forbes Town Hall. The exhibition will then be open from 12pm to 3pm on Friday, May 27 and 10am to 2pm on Saturday, May 28 and Sunday, May 29. There are five different categories - primary school, high school, community, open, village pride and annual waste theme (used tyres) and local winners will go on to compete in the
regional competition in Condobolin. Mayor Phyllis Miller OAM said she was pleased to see how many entries had been submitted for this year’s competition.“The purpose of Waste 2 Art is to encourage the concept of reduce, reuse and recycle and it is fantastic to see the creativity in turning waste to art,” Mayor Miller said. “I encourage you all to go along and have a look at the artworks as they are definitely worth a look.” With the display running for three days only, ending at 2pm on Sunday, locals are encouraged to get down to Town Hall and view the works of local, talented artists before it closes.

Crossing Work Begins
IMAGE: Westpac Forbes Bank Manager Shannon Crowley hands a $500 cheque over to Northside Chapel leader Rex Taylor, who was joined by a large group of children for the presentation on Wednesday last week. Photo: Supplied.
Northside Chapel Thrilled With Grant
Northside Chapel Community Church leader Rex Taylor says his organisation will benefit hugely from a jumping castle it will be able to purchase, thanks to the $500 grant it won from Westpac Forbes. Mr Taylor and his wife Rachel organise and operate the chapel with a volunteer team. The chapel runs children’s after school programs for all primary school aged children each Wednesday afternoon, and church services on Sundays. In addition to this, it hosts a family fun day periodically on a Sunday. The chapel runs two after school programs each Wednesday- an earlier one for the younger children, and one later for the older ones. Mr Taylor drives a bus which picks up and takes home children after their after school programs, and with the chapel only making money from donations, it is hard for it to make big purchases. But one of these hopes was to buy a jumping castle for its children, and this will now
be possible. “This money will provide the opportunity to purchase something the kids will enjoy, and hopefully can use it to provide entertainment for whole families,” said Mr Taylor. The venue is leased from Forbes Shire Council, but lots of community groups use it, and Mr Taylor said this would make the jumping castle an even better community asset. “We’re now looking around for the right jumping castle and once we’ve found one we will be ready to purchase it. The kids are greatly looking forward to getting one,” Mr Taylor said. “It will be great for the kids as a form of entertainment, but we want to get more parents and families involved and the jumping castle will help that too.” With Westpac celebrating 200 years next year, regional branches in NSW were giving away $500 to community groups in need. Following a trial period and consultation, Forbes Shire Council has began work to upgrade the pedestrian crossing on Rankin Street. Works, which started on Wednesday, will involve extension of the kerb to give improved user safety at the crossing as well as the addition of two car parking spaces. Work is scheduled to take several weeks in which time Council says will endeavour to keep disruption to a minimum. Pedestrian traffic movements will remain the same for footpaths, however the pedestrian crossing will be closed for the duration of works. Stage one will involve upgrade of the kerb section on the corner of Templar Street and Rankin Street. Traffic will remain with two operational lanes. The second stage of the work will be on the northern side of Rankin Street and will address kerb extensions and storm water inlets. Whilst this stage is in progress, to ensure the safety of pedestrians and Council employees working on the job, traffic will be reduced to one lane with eastbound traffic on Rankin Street being detoured up Templar Street. Westbound traffic will remain as usual. Council is also currently completing road pavement repairs in the CBD until Sunday, June 5. The majority of the works programmed will occur in Lachlan Street however some works will also be undertaken in Rankin Street, Riley Street, Browne Lane, Grenfell Street, Camp Street, Cross Street and Johnson Street. The majority of the works will be performed during the night. The approximate start time will be 8pm and conclude by 5am. Where possible, works will be scheduled later in the night when working adjacent to businesses which trade into the evening.

Dr Rasool Enjoying The Forbes Lifestyle Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea
New Forbes Medical Centre Registrar Dr Maria Rasool says she is enjoying the rural lifestyle of Forbes three months in to her 12-month stint at the practice. Dr Rasool, originally from Pakistan, relocated to Forbes in February, and has signed a 12-month contract to work in Forbes. It is her first job as a general practioner, and as well as working during the day at the Forbes Medical Centre, she will also work once a fortnight at the Forbes Hospital, seeing her own patients as well as working shifts in the Emergency Department. She told The Forbes Phoenix she enjoyed Forbes so much that she relocated her family to the town. “It’s a different lifestyle for what we’re used to, but it’s been a great change for my family. My daughter plays netball and she is loving it, and we’re really looking forward to travelling around to the different carnivals that the netball teams play at,” she said. While it has been a great move for her family, on a personal note, Dr Rasool said it has also been a great change for her. “I’m enjoying having the weekends free and travelling around the Central West to see what there is to see and do,” she said. Dr Rasool moved to Forbes from Fairfield in Sydney, where she worked at Fairfield
Hospital. She has also worked at St George Hospital in Sydney and Griffith Hospital in the NSW Riverina. She is currently studying for her final GP exam early next year while she works at the Forbes Medical Centre. Being her first role as a GP, she said she enjoys it more than hospital work. “You get to know your patients so much better, especially in a rural setting,” she said. By Joshua Matic

Although May 26 is the official date for Cancer Council’s Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea, morning tea events are being hosted by families, friends, workmates, businesses and community groups throughout May and June. Little Extra’s took the opportunity to help those affected by cancer on Friday 20th May by raising $312 in donations from their customers who enjoyed some delicious food and a welcoming cuppa. Wellknown local cook, Kellie Ellison, donated homemade slices, which were a big hit with young and old. Cancer Council aims to minimise the threat of cancer through successful prevention, best treatment, support and research. One in two Australians will be diagnosed with cancer by the age of 85. Every dollar raised makes a real difference helping to fund Cancer Council’s vital research, prevention and support service programmes. Everyone who made a donation on the day entered a draw to win a $50 Little Extra’s gift voucher and the lucky winner was Dorothy Haley. Even though it was not recognised currency, youngster Amelia Grayson realised the importance of the event and was only too happy to donate her toy money to this worthy cause. By Anita Morrison

Living &Lifestyle Verde Spa To Grow Under New Management
Verde Spa owner and operator Casey Stephenson says while her business will continue to provide the services it always has, there is opportunity to grow, after she purchased the business seven weeks ago. The organic beauty therapy business has beenoperating for about three years now, and has a reputation for providing great massages to the community. Amongst many other services it provides, it specialises in organic and natural beauty products from the ‘Organic Spa’ range, as well as organic makeup products from the ‘Inika Organic’ range. While Verde Spa has always angled its business on these products, Casey said there was potential for this range to grow. “I’ll be keeping the same products that our clients come to us for, but I will definitely be including some new products in the future,” she said. While this is the first time Casey has owned and operated her own business, she worked at Forbes based beauty business Jessica Essential Beauty for 17 years, and knows a lot about beauty therapy. Verde Spa offers services such as massages, nails, facials, waxing, body treatment, makeup, tinting, plus others upon appointment. “Our massages are one of the best things we do. We do hot stone massages and relaxation massages, and I think this is a really positive service we provide for the town,” she said.
The Rules of Engagement Decorating to the untrained eye may seem a skill weaved with mystery. For those of us in the know, the reason we succeed in our endeavours is simply because we implement key rules of styling. In layman’s terms, we possess the decorating do’s and don’ts. Let’s start with the decorating do’s… Do have an overall plan of what you’d like to achieve. Do adopt a colour palette that’s neutral and can be adapted to different styles over time. Do select furniture that’s in scale with the room’s dimension so the room with appear in perfect proportion. Do define zones within open planned areas with rugs and always use cushions to seamlessly bring a room’s colour palette together. Don’t be overwhelmed at the thought of decorating. As a stylist I love helping my clients achieve a result they love. Don’t try to incorporate too many different ideas or styles, less is more! Don’t settle for second best, choose pieces of furniture that you’ll love and that will last. And don’t keep items just because they were presents or hand-me-downs. Be ruthless! I hope you feel empowered, filled to the brim with knowledge that inspires you into action. Love Karen xx

FLANNERY’S Pharmacy
Heart Health
One Australian dies every 12 minutes as a result of heart disease. Heart disease is the single biggest killer of Australians. You may not be aware you have risk factors of heart disease early enough. Often there are no symptoms. So it’s really important to get your doctor to check your risks frequently, to ensure your heart is healthy. It takes just 10 minutes to check with your pharmacist and get a Risk Assessment Score. The Risk Assessment Score can determine your risk of having a heart attack or stroke. The good news is that heart disease is largely preventable. The number of people living with cardiovascular disease is increasing due to factors including population ageing and improved treatments that have resulted in people living longer with Cardiovascular disease. There is no single cause for heart disease, but there are risk factors that increase your chance of developing it. Research And Development Tax Offsets
Companies conducting R&D Activities are often subject to capital constraints and cash flow challenges. Some financial institutions are now offering companies the ability to finance their future R&D Tax Offset entitlements which can enable companies to: • place additional resources into the R&D activities; • advance development or commercialisation plans; • provide greater clarity on the timing of R&D entitlements; and • suspend or evade the need for capital raising. As with any financing decision, a company must carefully consider whether the terms, charges and interest rates of an offering meet their specific needs. Swanson Reed has analysed various R&D Tax Offset finance solutions and is able to refer companies seeking such products to dedicated finance professionals. Swanson Reed receives absolutely NO financial incentive or commission from their clients’ financing of R&D Entitlements. This independence means they are best placed to refer only the most suitable finance professionals for their clients’ particular needs. How does it work? Once the R&D claim has been prepared and documented, an eligible company completes an application process with a finance professional to receive a prepayment against R&D tax entitlements. Once assessed and approved, the prepayment funding service enables R&D companies to attain a portion of their R&D tax entitlement early. The financial institution receives the R&D Tax Offset directly from the ATO to apply against the financed amount. Funding Criteria: • eligible R&D activities OR positive “Advanced Finding” ruling from Innovation Australia; • no bank or other borrowing facilities requiring a PPSR registration; • no outstanding ATO liabilities; • good compliance history with AusIndustry and ATO; • good record keeping and contemporaneous accounting reports readily available for the relevant period; and • R&D claim preparation, lodgement and assessment by Swanson Reed. Over the next few months, AusIndustry will likely undertake compliance activity for 2015 R&D Applications lodged around the April 30 deadline.

Local Fighters Win Karate State Championships
Four competitors from Central West Kyokushin Karate Club participated in the Kyokushin NSW Full Contact Championships in Sydney on Sunday 22nd May, winning two state titles in their divisions. Representing the juniors were Rebecca Withers from Forbes and Kye Herft from Parkes and in the adults, Parkes locals Renae Herft and Natalie Caruana. Rebecca and Kye fought in the full-contact children’s division; however modifications on the day were an obstacle as the students were not prepared for the style of fighting. Both students displayed outstanding skill and most importantly, excellent sportsmanship on the day. Their Sensei and coach, Michelle Kable said; “although the change in fighting rules was a bit of a setback, we will be able to adapt our techniques and approach for the next tournament. Both Kye and Rebecca are a credit to our club, and I am very proud of their efforts, and that they had the courage to have a go.” In the adult’s division Renae Herft, a white belt, showed true spirit with the makings of
a future Australian Champion; persevering through numerous fouled punches to the face to win her division and take home the NSW State Championship title. Renae’s sister, Natalie Caruana, a more experienced martial artist has also only started Kyokushin Karate this year and was well prepared for the full contact fights. Dropping 5kg in the last month to make her weight division Natalie was able to maintain her strength and dominated her opponent with snapping head kicks, punches and powerful leg kicks to also win her division and take home the title of NSW State Champion – watch this space for great things to come! The club are now preparing for the Australian National Championships in August. Michelle said; “The karate club is growing stronger – we breed them tough out here in the bush. We’re very proud of the courage shown on the weekend, with all fighters exhibiting great karate and outstanding sportsmanship. We were very lucky to have great support for the awesome foursome.”

“Rampage” Jets Into 2nd Place
Last weekend saw locals Justin and Mitch Roylance compete at Round 3 of the Australian V8 Superboat Championship in Temora in the Group A 400 class. Qualifying seen Mitch and navigator Matt Hearn in Blackjack at the top end of the field, after taking out 1st place at the previous meeting in April, they had the rest of the field on their toes. Unfortunately Justin and his co pilot, Joel Duggan, B driving the Rampage boat had engine issues and found themselves at the bottom of the field in the Qualifying rounds. Coming into eliminations Team Rampage found time to make a few changes to the engine, without any testing opportunity they were able to put down a good enough time to go through to the next round. Team Blackjack also laid down a blistering time allowing them to proceed. The next round of eliminations comprised of 6 teams which were 2 Obsessed (Brett Thornton), Rampage (Justin), Jack Hammer (David Moodie), Pangaea Floors Racing (Greg Harriman), Black Jack (Mitch Roylance) and the A Driver in Rampage (Jody Ely) these 6 battled it out to gain place in the top 3. The final saw Brett and Lin Thornton in “2 Obsessed” take 1st. In 2nd place was Justin Roylance and Joel Duggan and Cowra team of David Moodie and Laura Pratt taking 3rd place. The unlimited class was taken out by crowd favourite Phonsy Mullan in “Ramjet”, 2nd place was Darek Sygidus in”Frankenstein” and 3rd was Daryl “Nutsy” Hutton in “Hooters”. There has been fantastic local support for this sport and the teams. August and September sees racing head North to Cabarita Beach and back at Temora on the 1st & 29th October. If you would like to know more about the V8 Superboat Championship, check out the teams on Facebook. www.v8superboats.com.au By Justin Roylance

Women’s Bowling Club Off To State Championships
Last Tuesday and Wednesday Forbes was host to the Region 12 play-offs with pennant teams two, three and four from Dubbo, Orange, Gulgong, Parkes, and Forbes competing to play in the State Championships in August at Nowra. As Forbes were the number two pennant team to win at district level we played Dubbo City and although we had a slow start our Forbes team kept on winning each end until we passed their score to win by three shots, 31-28. What an effort and we were rewarded with a gold medal by our District President Annette Tisdell and now are off to play in the State Championships on August 1517. All districts in New South Wales will be competing and several of our players were lucky to be playing in this event in 2006 and are excited to represent our small club once again.

FNA Fundraiser A Success
The Forbes Netball Association held a very successful fundraiser last Saturday, as part of the Saturday competition. Funds were raised for The Kids Cancer Project, which is the charity of Netball NSW, where netball associations across the state get together for a day of fun and dress up to support the charity. Thank you to all the parents and volunteers who cooked and donated at the canteen, and helped in many ways to make the day such an outstanding success. Last year, 41 netball associations across the state including the FNA raised over $46,000 for The Kids Cancer Project, and this year the target is to raise over $50,000. The final total is still to be calculated for this year. The theme for 2016 Forbes netballers was Crazy Vinnies day, where everyone was encouraged to dress up and have fun, playing netball and raising funds for a very worthwhile charity. Prizes were awarded to the Best Dressed Vinnies team with the winner being the 13 years team of Pineapples. The Best Dressed players prizes were awarded to Emily Gartner (13 years) and Eliza Kerr (NetSetGo). A 100 Club was also drawn on the day with winners being number 9 Rel White; number 85 Adam White; number 40 Jessica Armitage; number 78 Nikky White; and number 74 P Greenhalge.
