Community Chest Grant Trial Hailed A Success

The Forbes Community Chest grant program will continue indefinitely, after the sixmonth trial period ended as a resounding success. The program, which is being facilitated by the Forbes Services Memorial Club, has seen a Wednesday night raffle held each week since November last year, with a month’s worth of raffle funds going towards a selected community organisation. Organisations are selected by the Community Chest in conjunction with the Services Club, and with a total of $15,571.95, Club General Manager David Fitzgerald said the program had shown its worth. “It’s a great program because all of the funds raised come straight from the community, and go back into the community. The club just facilitates it and donates the raffle prizes,” Mr Fitzgerald said. “From a fundraising perspective, it’s been exceptional, and with the raffles, we’ve seen tremendous support from local people that come to the club.” “Other businesses from around town have also provided vouchers as prizes for the raffles, so it really has been a community effort.” Mr Fitzgerald added it was often difficult

to select the right organisations in town to fundraise for, and encouraged local charities to let themselves be known. “It’s intended for their use, and it’s intended for them to be able to raise funds, so if there’s charities out there looking for a bit of a financial kick, give us a ring or come in and see us, and ask for assistance.” The winners of the last six months of fundraising were CanAssist Forbes in November, Forbes Legacy in December, the Rural Fire Service in January, the State Emergency Service in February, Jemalong Residential Village Carers Group in March, the FBA in April, and the Mater Nursing Home Auxiliary in May. The Red Bend College Junior Rugby League Club will be the beneficiary of funds for fundraising this month. JRV Carers Group President Helen Hurley said the funding her organisation has received would be crucial to continuing its services at Jemalong Village. “Our role is to provide services to residents at the Jemalong Village, for example taking them on bus trips, purchasing them items needed for general entertainment, and anything else to make their lives more pleasant,” she said.

“We’ve just ordered four roller chairs for the residents, and they cost us about $500 each, so our funds will be able to cover that. A bus trip will cost us about $1000 as well, so we’ll now have funds for that too.” Mrs Hurley said the funds will also save her organisation from needing to host extra fundraising events this year. MAYORAL NOTES If you haven’t heard the news yet, Council has appointed Danny Green as our new General Manager. Danny will start on Monday, July 4 and we are very confident that Forbes will go ahead in leaps and bounds under his management. Danny has been the General Manager of Gloucester Shire Council since 2012 and brings with him a range of experience and qualifications. He is very enthusiastic about moving to Forbes and is the kind of General Manager that really cares about the community he works in and the team that works for him. Council’s draft 2016-17 Operational Plan is currently on exhibition and a public meeting will be held at 6pm on Monday, June 6 at the Town Hall to answer any questions you may have. Once all the feedback is received, we will consider it again at the next meeting on June 17. Today is the official opening of the new Forbes Preschool which is very exciting. The preschool has been open for a few weeks and it is just fantastic that we have this great facility in town. The official

Your free weekly guide to what’s happening in and around Forbes...shop ceremony takes place at 9.30am and the preschool will be open for people to look through from 9am to 2pm. It is definitely worth a look! At 6.30pm next Wednesday a public meeting will be held at the Bedgerabong Community Hall with Councillors and staff. A number of items are on the agenda including the Rural Waste Facilities Option Plan and how groups can access grant funding. I encourage all Bedgerabong residents to come along. I have been appointed as a committee member to the State Weed Committee for the next three years. The committee’s purpose is to reduce the impact of weeds on the community, primary industries and environment by providing consistent and transparent state level leadership, coordination and accountability for weed management throughout NSW. I am looking forward to working with the other committee members to achieve this. Have a great week, stay safe and God bless. Mayor, Cr Phyllis Miller OAM

What is your favourite warm drink for winter?

Debra Slack-Smith: My favourite warming winter drink is Hot Milo. I put the milo in first, then add the cold milk and heat in the microwave.

Fran Emmett: Hot Milo is my warm drink of choice for winter. I make it on cold milk and warm it in the microwave. I add an extra sprinkle of milo on the top before heating for that added crunch.

Tim West: You can’t beat Hot Chocolate in the winter. I make mine on warm milk but I don’t like it too sweet.

Gee Says ‘Farewell’ To State Politics

IMAGE: Dr Tahmina Mohsin is the new doctor at the Forbes Inland Medical Centre, and is enjoying her time in town. Photo: Joshua Matic.

Forbes Inland Medical Centre Welcomes New Doctor

The Forbes Medical Centre has welcomed a new doctor, with Dr Tahmina Mohsin joining the practice two weeks ago. Her arrival comes after a previous doctor left the practice, but her association with the other doctor there, Dr Hassan, is what brought her to Forbes. She is working part-time at Forbes Inland Medical Centre, and said the opportunity was one should couldn’t pass on. “I was really excited when the part-time opportunity came up in Forbes, as I was wanting to reduce my workload,” she said. “I worked with Dr Hassan at the hospitals I worked at in Sydney and Nowra previously, so when the opportunity came up, he asked me to come to Forbes.” Dr Tahmina will be staying in Forbes in provided accommodation, but with her family still living in Sydney, she will be commuting from Sydney to Forbes. Dr Tahmina has come across to Forbes for work from Ulladulla on the NSW South

Coast, where she spent four years working full time as a general practioner. Before that she worked at Nowra’s Shoalhaven Hospital and various hospitals in Sydney, including Bankstown, Campbelltown and Blacktown, as well as Shellharbour Hospital in Wollongong and John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle. She is originally from Bangladesh, and she worked in New Zealand before moving to Australia in 2004. She said the thing she enjoys the most about her work in Forbes is being able to serve a tight-knit, rural community. “I think, as a doctor, you work better in a rural town, as you get to see the same patients all the time and get to know them better,” she said. “It’s easier to serve individuals. You feel like you’re making more of a difference, and you get a much better connection with them than what you do in the city.” By Joshua Matic.

State Member for Orange Andrew Gee on Tuesday announced his resignation, following five years representing the communities of the Central West in the NSW Parliament. “It has been an honour to work with local community members, community groups, and also my fellow members of Parliament on a range of issues and projects that have been close to the hearts of those in our communities,” Mr Gee said. “More than anything though, it has been an absolute privilege to represent the communities of Orange, Molong, Cudal and the Cabonne Shire, Gulgong, Mudgee, Wellington, and more recently, Parkes, Forbes, Canowindra, Eugowra, Peak Hill, Trundle, Tullamore, Bogan Gate and their surrounding districts. Mr Gee will now contest the federal seat of Calare in the upcoming Federal Election.

Council Appoints New GM

Forbes Shire Council is pleased to announce the appointment of Danny Green as its new General Manager.
After a comprehensive recruitment process, Council’s decision was unanimous and Danny will commence on Monday, July 4.

Danny has been the General Manager of Gloucester Shire Council since 2012 and prior to that was the General Manger of Glamorgan Spring Bay Council in Tasmania.
His other previous roles include Director of Corporate Services with Wentworth Shire Council, Director of Corporate Services with the Australian Agricultural College Corporation and Regional Manager of Sun Water.
Danny has a Bachelor of Commerce and a Master of Business Administration and is also a fellow of the Australian Society of Certified Practising Accountants.

Mayor Phyllis Miller OAM said Council was extremely excited about welcoming Danny to the Forbes Shire.
“We are very lucky to have appointed someone as experienced and well qualified as Danny as our new General Manager,” Mayor Miller said.

“He is very enthusiastic and is the kind of General Manager that really cares about the community he works in and the team that works for him.”
In his new role as General Manager of Forbes Shire Council, Mr Green will be responsible for the overall management of the organisation, for the carrying out of

Friday 3 June 2016 Page 5

Council’s policies and strategic objectives and for ensuring Council is provided with accurate information to promote effective decision-making. The role is also responsible for community consultation and engagement processes and to pursue beneficial relationships with regional neighbours and other levels of Government. He will also report and monitor strategic plans and long term and short-term financial budgets. With a passion for communities, Danny is a strong believer in effective engagement that sets long-term planning linked to dayto-day delivery.
Danny is married with four adult children and is looking forward to moving to Forbes and getting involved in the community.

Diversity Shown At Food Revolution The hard working volunteer Food Revolution Day and Forbes Farmers Markets committee members did not let adverse weather conditions dampen their enthusiasm for the scheduled event held last weekend. The groups joined forces to provide the Forbes community with an opportunity to come together and cook good food and share skills, knowledge and resources. Around 1800 people attended the morning which was filled with fresh food market stalls, food tasting, demonstrations and children’s activities. The Forbes community once again showed its diversity with the Bush Tucker and Multicultural Food tasting stall which provided samples of kangaroo, crocodile, emu, damper, sushi and Iranian cuisine. The CWA night branch potted seedlings and Forbes Neighbourhood Watch were busy with Fruit Faces. Matt Pearce demonstrated how to make Mini Vegetable Gardens in large pots which were later won by twelve lucky attendees. Tammy Montgomery from Forbes North Public School gave an interesting presentation on kitchen skills and how to make Bircher Muesli which is one of the recognised Food Revolution recipes. Tips For Heating Your House This Winter As the mercury in the thermometer starts to drop, it’s tempting to reach for the heating control and crank it up to high. But there are other ways you can keep warm without facing a huge bill at the end of the month. A great trick to lock in heat is to invest in some thick curtains. Curtains with a thermal lining are a relatively cheap option and if you don’t want to splash out on new ones you can always line your originals with fleece or even PVC shower curtains. And why should only windows have all the fun? Create a curtain for your door to add another layer of protection. Spotlight in Forbes has a huge range of curtains and blinds that are available already made, can be custom made, or even self-cut to satisfy DIY enthusiasts and get the exact measurements! The store is located next to Bunnings on the Parkes Road. In addition to the above, let in as much sunlight as possible during the day to make the most of natural (and free) heat. Window shades and curtains should be kept open during the day and shut tight as soon as dusk falls. Leaving unused rooms’ doors wide open means cold air has more room to circulate. Keep them shut and conserve your heat! Lots of Aussie housing have floorboards, which can account for as much as 10% of heat loss if they’re not insulated. Rugs and blankets can help reduce this and have the added bonus of keeping your tootsies toasty.

BFC Kitchens offers competitive pricing for everyone, whether you’re building a new home or just wanting to update your new kitchen we are sure to have a design that would suit you so call us on 0263826360 or drop into 9 Templemore St Young for a free measure and quote.

What Makes Western Red Cedar Attractive for Your Timber Windows and Doors?

Western Red Cedar is a popular and strong timber that is sought after due to its beauty and durability. It is a timber that remains stable under most weather conditions and is not prone to shrinking or swelling. This means it holds its shape and ensures longevity despite exposure to cold, heat, rain and other harsh environmental factors common in Australian weather. As a low-density timber that offers very good thermal insulation, it helps with heating and cooling efficiency, reducing electricity costs and making a home more en-

vironmentally friendly and sustainable. Its versatility enables it to be used for both internal and external applications. Western Red Cedar is visually beautiful with rich and inviting colours from deep, soft browns to soft caramels tinged with red.It has a fine texture and straight grain with growth rings often visible. The durable yet soft properties let the material take very well to being stained and polished. Furthermore, Western Red Cedar’s natural preservatives provide resistance to fungus and insects. The wood is protected

against termites, woodborers and fungus that can dramatically affect alternative timber options. Western Red Cedar is a stylish and practical material option with natural appeal, superior structural performance and elemental protection. Would you like to know more about Western Red Cedar? Phone Glassplace on 6862 2345 or visit their showroom at 4 Clarke Street, Parkes to see their Western Red Cedar display and lots of other products to suit every style and type of home.

VOTING RULES HAVE CHANGED?

Make your vote count this federal election Saturday 2 July At this year’s federal election, the way you vote for the Senate has changed and it’s important that you understand how to vote correctly. On the large white Senate ballot paper, you can choose to vote either above or below the line. If you choose to vote above the line, you now need to number at least 6 boxes. Put the number ‘1’ in the box for the party or group that is your first choice, a ‘2’ for your second choice and so on until you’ve numbered at least 6 boxes.

If you choose to vote below the line, you need to number at least 12 boxes, from 1 to 12, for individual candidates in the order of your choice. Voting for the House of Representatives has not changed. On the green ballot paper, you need to number every box, starting with the number ‘1’ for your first choice, ‘2’ for your second choice and so on until you have numbered every box. ‘How to vote’ instructions will be clearly displayed on your ballot paper. Don’t worry if you make a mistake — just ask for another ballot paper.
