New Forbes Preschool Officially Opened
It has been a rollercoaster ride over the last four years, but the new Forbes Preschool was finally officially opened last Friday. Centre Director Amy Shine was joined by NSW Deputy Premier Troy Grant and Forbes Mayor Phyllis Miller, as well as many other children and parents, to celebrate the occasion. The project was funded by the preschool itself, Forbes Shire Council and the State Government, with the State Government contributing a grant of $1.25million to make the project possible. The new building has been in use for the last seven weeks now, but its completion had been delayed for four years. The new building was originally going to be built on the other side of Nelson Park to which the new building stands, but following a community consultation at the time, it was decided the plans would be changed. Some time after this occurred, the former tennis courts on the opposite side of Nelson Park became available, and they ultimately got approved to make way for the new preschool. The new building, located on Barton Street, just down the road from the location of the old preschool on Bogan Street, is a far cry
compared with the old facility according to Ms Shine. “It really is a dream come true,” she said. “Before this new facility was built we had a massive waiting list for children enrolling at the centre, and we were struggling to keep up.” “Now that we have a bigger facility we have room for a lot more children, and as a consequence, a lot more people in our community can be a part of our preschool.” Ms Shine, who was still the Director back in 2012, said the old facility was far out-grown, and she decided to lobby to the then local member, Troy Grant, for funding to build an improved facility. The new centre includes one extra playroom than what the old one had, with three of these, as well as a large outdoor area. But the new addition, Ms Shine said, that was the most important is the Community Room. “Our Community Room offers speech therapy and occupational therapy, but we also use it for new mothers groups who have sessions with our early childhood nurse, and it is also used for Sunday school,” she said. “This room brings so much community

involvement with our preschool and I think it is the best thing that we have.” Ms Shine said the preschool would continue to fundraise so it could purchase new equipment and resources to fill its new facility. Educational programs will remain the same, but more children will now benefit. By Joshua Matic

MAYORAL NOTES On Monday night we held a public meeting to present our draft operational budget for the next 12 months. We are very pleased that we are delivering an all-time record, balanced budget at $38 million. At the moment we are looking at delivering $15.5 million in capital works and almost $12 million through the general fund. It is going to be a big year. A $600,000 pledge to rehabilitate the netball courts if the Turnbull Government is re-elected was announced on Saturday morning by Riverina MP Michael McCormack and Senator Fiona Nash. The netball community are so excited about the pending grant. Forbes Preschool was officially opened by Deputy Premier Troy Grant on Friday and we cannot thank him enough for his involvement in this project. Through a very solid partnership with the preschool, the State Government and Council, we’ve been able to deliver a state of the art preschool that will take us into the next 60 years. Sydney Weekender host Mike Whitney
and his crew were in Forbes on Tuesday and Wednesday to film an episode on our town! It was great to have them here and I can’t wait to watch the episode! I will keep you updated when we find out when it will be aired on TV. Due to the wet weather, the completion of the resurfacing work in the CBD has been delayed. We thank you for your patience while this work continues. Have a great week, stay safe and God bless. Mayor, Cr Phyllis Miller OAM

Sunbeam Rally To Roll Into Forbes
Sunbeam car enthusiasts from across Australia and New Zealand will be in Forbes next weekend to attend the 40th National Sunbeam Car Rally. Highlights of the weekend include a Mayoral Welcome Reception on Friday, June 10 and a public Show and Shine in Harold Street on Saturday, June 11. During the Show and Shine from 10am to 2pm, locals will have the opportunity to view the range of cars and ask the owners any questions they may have. Sunbeam is best known for its later history under the Rootes Group during the war era and well into the 1950s and 1960s when it produced stylish Sunbeam Talbots and sporty Sunbeam Alpine and Tiger convertibles. For a small car company, the Sunbeam brand managed many achievements and also had motor sport successes. They had a revolutionary new design in 1959, which was a leap ahead of its British contemporaries with modern features like wind up windows, reclining seats, sporty engines and disc brakes as standard. The Sunbeam Tiger was resurrected in 1964, which married a Sunbeam Alpine body with a powerful Ford V8 motor based on a prototype produced by American Racing icon, Carroll Shelby. The Tiger was made in limited numbers from 1964 to 1967 and is best known as the car of ‘Secret Agent 86’ in the 1960s television comedy Get Smart. Mayor Phyllis Miller said Council was looking forward to hosting the 40th National Sunbeam Car Rally. “The Show and Shine on the Saturday will definitely be worth attending as you will be able to have a good look at the different types of Sunbeams on display, especially because they are quite rare in Australia,” Mayor Miller said.

Grant Promise Puts Netball On Centre Court
A re-elected Coalition Government will invest $600,000 to replace nine existing netball courts and build three new courts in Forbes. Minister for Regional Development Fiona Nash made the announcement last Saturday while visiting Forbes with the Member for Riverina, Michael McCormack. Minister Nash said the new netball courts were critical to keep netballers, young and old, involved in the sport across the region. “It was disappointing when the annual netball carnival was cancelled for the first time in 40 years because of the poor state of the courts. I am delighted we can help ensure the carnival will be back on next year. “Sport, especially team sports, are a great way for people to keep fit and active, and I enjoyed many years playing in local netball teams myself,” Minister Nash said.
Mr McCormack welcomed the announcement, saying that local sporting clubs like the Forbes Netball Association make a positive contribution to the community and are a critical part of the local social fabric. “Sports clubs play a very important role in regional communities, they provide opportunities for people to catch up with one another and feel involved in local activities. “With more than 450 members aged from five to fifty plus years, and some people regularly travelling more than 100kms to attend matches, the netball centre has a footprint right across the region,” Mr McCormack said. Robyn Kenny from the Forbes Netball Association said they were extremely excited to receive the funding. “We have been planning this project for a long time and the Government’s contri-
bution puts us years ahead of what would be possible without this funding. It will immediately upgrade our netball complex to standards we could only have imagined,” said Ms Kenny.

RURAL ROUNDUP Miller And James More Than Your Average Real Estate
Established in 1903, Miller and James Real Estate Temora is much more than just a traditional real estate business. Miller and James principles, Chris Reardon and Angus McLaren have been involved in agriculture all their lives. They were both raised on family farms and know agriculture in our region back to front. They understand that rural property transactions involve a lot more than putting a sign on the front gate and a couple of ads in the local paper. Mr McLaren says the key to the success of Miller and James is relationship building.
“Our business has been operating for 113 years. We have been dealing with some clients for three generations or more. Whether people are selling, buying or leasing rural property, we have a database that can find a solution to what our clients require in any situation. That is where we add value.” Mr McLaren also said that as farms have become larger, Miller and James had made a conscious decision to increase the geographic spread of the business. “We basically service from the Lachlan to
the Murray. We pop up all over the place. We may be based in Temora, but we travel everywhere. No farm is too big or too small for us to look at.” With the rural property market very strong at the moment, Mr McLaren believes now is a good time for those people considering retirement or a change in direction to contact Miller and James to arrange an onfarm meeting. “We provide free market appraisals and the best thing is that it doesn’t cost you a cent to talk to us,” said Mr McLaren

RURAL ROUNDUP Rain Brings Strong Month For Livestock Market
Wow what a month we have seen. With widespread rain throughout all of the eastern states of Australia we have seen some fire in our livestock markets. With this wide spread rain we have seen numbers restrict further in the sheep and cattle markets which intern has had positive gains in prices. In the cattle market we are noticing a purely supply and demand driven market, with numbers low through all grades we are seeing restocking and feeder steers making from $3.40 to $3.80 c/kg, feeder and restocking heifers are making in excess of $3.00 c/kg and up to $3.50c/kg. On the export front we have seen some great gains with heavy steers and bullocks back over the $3.00 c/kg mark and up to $3.25c/ kg, and cow supply has tightened and seen most grades receiving promising gains with the best of your heavy cows making up to $2.50 c/kg. I believe this cattle market for the next month will stay considerably strong as long as numbers stay low and demand keeps high. To the sheep and lamb markets, hold onto your hats because things are really heating up, but for how long? With the lamb market we are seeing very strong gains in both domestic and export markets with most domestic and export processors offering over the hook rates in excess of $6.00 c/ kg and in the saleyards we are seeing the
best heavy trade and light export lambs making from $145 and up to $170 and the extra heavy lambs making up to $230. The mutton market has rallied on to sky high rates with most mutton making in excess of $4.00c/kg and in the yards with the best of the heavy mutton making up to $170 for full wool heavy merino ewes and wethers. So until next month let’s hope for these strong prices to continue. For any other information on market trends or marketing options don’t hesitate to call. By Adam Chudleigh

RURAL ROUNDUP
Jemalong Wool Pty Ltd Weekly Market Update Week ending: 2 June 2016
With just over 34,000 bales offered nationally, the results for the week were largely reflective of supply. For Merino Fleece that meant a focus on the small volume of 20.1 and broader, which resulted in a slight firming over the two days. Meanwhile the larger portion of the Merino Fleece sector, which was in the finer microns, proved to be a drag on the market. The better types (stylish/40nkt) still managed good results and were in line with last week but the lower spec types had unconvincing support and were generally 10 to 20 cents cheaper. “Room2” types also found good demand on limited volume. Merino Skirtings were mostly unchanged on the previous sale with Beststyle/low VM types maintaining recent buyer enthusiasm. Merino Carding recorded strong results with increases of 5-20 cents. Crossbreds had a mixed outing with increases in some microns being balanced out by losses elsewhere. Next week’s offering of 28,594 bales, will be the smallest sale in 12months.

LEGAL Eagle
Crime?
What is a crime? There are many Crimes or Offences. A lot are contained in the Crimes Act but many more are contained in other Statutes both of the State and Federal Parliaments. The range of Offences vary from Murder down to Parking. Most criminal matters are commenced by the Police or the Director of Public Prosecutions by way of Court Attendance Notices (formerly known as Police Charges/Summonses) and those charged with an Offence will appear firstly before a Magistrate sitting in a Local Court. In some cases issues of Bail may need to be considered. Magistrates deal with over 90% of criminal matters summarily but the more serious offences are committed to the District Court or Supreme Court for Trial before a Judge and/or Jury. Unlike Civil Matters, Criminal matters must be proved ‘beyond reasonable doubt’ having regard to the elements of the Offence. This is when a Solicitor’s professional knowledge becomes essential for the client (i.e. the person charged with an Offence). Police will normally have a fact sheet (which is not evidence but outlines the Police case) on the occasion of the first appearance before the Court. With the fact sheet and instructions from the client, this will help the Solicitor in deciding whether to advise the client to plead guilty or not guilty having regard to the elements of the Offence. Sometimes an adjournment is necessary to obtain further information. Once a plea is entered, then the Magistrate may adjourn the matter for hearing, sentence the client, commit the client for Trial in a higher Court or other options which may depend on the seriousness of the Offence and the previous criminal history of the client. Jess Accepts Florida Offer
The University of Florida is a far cry from the Forbes Botanical Gardens but come the end of August it will become home for middle distance runner, Jessica Pascoe, who realised her passion for running with the Forbes Little Athletics Club. Jess showed great talent for the 1500 & 3000m events during her high school years but since graduating from Forbes High in 2014 has gone from strength to strength in Canberra where she is currently studying to become a PE/Mathematics teacher. The University of Florida scouted Jess through her results posted on the internet and first contacted her through Facebook. “It felt a bit weird when they first contacted me on Facebook,” Jess said. Jess and her father, Darren, recently made the trip to Los Angeles, then Orlando and finally Gainesville to experience everything one of the leading American Universities had to offer. The facilities and scholarship
was more than Jess had imagined or expected and made her decision to accept a four-year full scholarship with the Florida Gators Cross Country and Track Program. The scholarship will cover all the costs associated with her studies and the running program, including training apparel and shoes by Nike, she will enter alongside 20 other promising athletes from around the world. All of her food and travel expenses to Australian and International Competitions and Trials, where she will still compete as an Aussie, are also covered. Jess was also surprised to find out that sports drink ‘Gatorade’ was designed there. The University have graciously allowed Jess to remain in Australia until she competes in the National Cross Country Championships on August 20. By Anita Morrison
Both Red Bend Catholic College Opens and Fifteens teams had convincing wins recently in the Western Final of the Country Cup. The opens had a big 40-4 win over St Johns. Always in control they showed some great combinations in attack and defence. The Man of the Match was the versatile Jye Dillon who started in the centres and ended up in the front row. The Fifteens scored the first try, however St Johns (Dubbo) fought back strongly, with the College leading 10-6 at half time. The second half saw the Red Bend team show some great teamwork in scoring four great tries to eventually run out winners 30-6. The Man of the Match was half back Thomas Toohey. The College has a proud history in the Country Cup winning the Opens and Under Thirteens age division twice previously, while the Opens were runners-up in the final last year. The teams now travel to Cootamundra next term on the 28th of July for the Southern Finals, where they will play the winners from the Riverina, Wollongong, Canberra and South Coast regions. The Country Cup is run by the Country Rugby League (CRL) and the NRL. It is an All Schools Event for Country Schools (State Catholic Private) that is contested in three age divisionsunder 13’s and 15’s, and Opens Schools attend regional gala days with the winners progressing through to regional finals. Winners of the region then progress through to play in the Southern or Northern Finals from here the Southern and Northern winners play the State Final.

VOTING RULES HAVE CHANGED?
Make your vote count this federal election Saturday 2 July At this year’s federal election, the way you vote for the Senate has changed and it’s important that you understand how to vote correctly. On the large white Senate ballot paper, you can choose to vote either above or below the line. If you choose to vote above the line, you now need to number at least 6 boxes. Put the number ‘1’ in the box for the party or group that is your first choice, a ‘2’ for your second choice and so on until you’ve numbered at least 6 boxes.
If you choose to vote below the line, you need to number at least 12 boxes, from 1 to 12, for individual candidates in the order of your choice. Voting for the House of Representatives has not changed. On the green ballot paper, you need to number every box, starting with the number ‘1’ for your first choice, ‘2’ for your second choice and so on until you have numbered every box. ‘How to vote’ instructions will be clearly displayed on your ballot paper. Don’t worry if you make a mistake — just ask for another ballot paper.
Your vote will help shape Australia. To learn more
