Eisteddfod Big Draw Card For School Dance Groups
Competition among schools has increased in the 23rd annual Forbes Eisteddfod, which ended in Forbes yesterday. With prize money of $500 for the school with the most points, there has been a rise in entries from schools this year, according to Helen Hurley, President of the Forbes Eisteddfod Committee. Helen said approximately 1,400 entries were received for the eight different categories. This meant more than 2,000 children and adults went across the stage for the five days of the Eisteddfod. Every session had a packed Town Hall to capacity with about 200 parents in attendance. Participants not only came from Forbes but from all over the Central West and even further afield, including Grenfell, Parkes, Bathurst, Griffith and Leeton. The individual categories were open to participants of all ages. The competition started on Saturday with piano, and vocal on Sunday. On Monday the first school groups were on stage in the instrumental category, while the speech and drama sec-
tion was on Tuesday. The most popular category this year, school dance groups, had its turn on Wednesday. Many schools entered for this competition. Other categories for groups were for bands and school choirs. On Tuesday the Red Bend Catholic College choir were awarded a first place. Each category had prize money, medals or scholarships to be won. There were 250 scholarships, which cover tuition fees, up for grabs. The adjudicator this year was Mel Philip from Toowoomba. She is qualified under Eisteddfod rules and able to judge all the different categories. Helen said the individual dance competition of the Eisteddfod would take place during the second week of the school holiday. A different adjudicator, who can judge all types of dance, has been asked for this competition. A voluntary committee giving talented people in the region a platform to perform every year runs the Forbes Eisteddfod.

The idea for an Eisteddfod dates back to the 12th century in Wales when it was a Welsh festival of literature, music and performance. The current format comes from an 18th century revival of the Eisteddfod. There are many Eisteddfods held across Australia, including the Australian National Eisteddfod. By Maggi Barnard

THUMBS UP... THUMBS DOWN MAYORAL NOTES This week I attended the National General Assembly of Local Government in Canberra with Deputy Mayor Graeme Miller. There were many and varied topics on the agenda including NBN blackspots and mobile phone coverage issues as well as funding opportunities through the Federal Government. On Thursday afternoon Riverina MP Michael McCormack was in town to announce $10,500 for the Forbes Amateur Swimming Club. This funding was made possible through the Stronger Communities Program and will help bring the clubhouse up to scratch. Our Grants Officer Andrew Rawsthorne did a great job in helping the swimming club apply for this grant. If you need any help with grant applications, don’t hesitate to give him a call. I attended the official opening of the Parkes Regional Airport upgrade and the dedication of the late Robert Wilson Terminal on Thursday morning. Robert was a great Local Government colleague and a wonderful mayor of Parkes Shire Council for 23 years. It was lovely to see his family representing him at the occasion. The Federal Election is just around the corner on 2nd July and pre-polling starts at the Town Hall on Monday. Absentee voting is also available during a Federal Election, make sure you don’t forget to vote. With the amount of rain we have had this week, please don’t drive in flood water and if you are driving in wet weather, drive very carefully. Have a great week, stay safe and God bless. Mayor, Cr Phyllis Miller OAM

Check Your Child Restraint
The free Child Restraint Checking Day held recently discovered that 60% of the child restraints checked were incorrectly fitted. The service, offered by Forbes Shire Council and Jelbart Dawson, provided free child restraint inspections at the only RMS Authorised Child Restraint Fitting Station in Forbes. Five child restraints were brought in by parents, grandparents and carers for checking. Forbes Shire Council’s Road Safety and Injury Prevention Officer, Logan Dolbel, said that research showed that two out of three child restraints are not being used properly and this put children at risk of sustaining injuries if they are involved in a crash. “Most of the child restraints that were checked only had minor problems that needed fixing to ensure the safety of the child,” said Logan. “The most common mistakes were related to the use of the lap sash seatbelt and the straps on the child restraint - they needed tightening, they were too tight, or were incorrectly positioned. Nearly all of the restraints checked also needed additional parts like gated buckles to ensure the safety of the restraint and the child. Logan said the correct fitting and adjustment of child restraints was vital. “Child restraints that are not correctly fitted put children at risk of injury in the event of a crash. It is important to make sure that your precious cargo is safe and buckled up every time they are in the car - whether it’s a five minute or five hour journey.”
According to Logan people who attended the checking day said they had come along because they were uncertain as to whether their child restraints were correctly installed. Information and advice was also available about the types of child restraints, the national laws and when to move children from one restraint to the next. This is the second time that free child restraint checking days have been held in Forbes as part of the I’m counting on you project. If you missed out on this great opportunity, Jelbart Dawson & Co can install and check child restraints every day for a small fee.

A Refresh After 60 Years
IMAGE: The new layout in Gunn’s Menswear.
QUESTION of the week
Gunn’s Menswear has been supplying Forbes and surrounds with quality menswear for nearly 60 years. While many original features of the shop date back that far, we have decided it was time for a refresh and an update for the layout. The layout of the store evolved organically over time as new stock lines and new services have been added to the business. Over time the types of clothing customers are looking for has also changed. Workwear is a huge part of our business, customized uniforms are a given for most businesses, while suits have made a big comeback, and of course fashion trends come and go. So with the customer in mind, it was time to consolidate, restructure and bring Gunn’s Menswear into the modern day with a fresh layout to give our customers a focused shopping experience. All menswear is now front and centre on the main shop floor. Our suiting, dress trousers and business shirts have been brought down from upstairs and the surf wear brought forward. With such a huge demand for quality workwear combined with the emphasis on safety wear, we have given it its own space at the back. Corporate wear and schoolwear remain upstairs. We still have a few areas to complete and some fine tuning to be done. Coming soon we will have vinyl printing for banners and signage, as well as digital printing. We are in the process of purchasing machines to offer these services. This will enable us to offer more on top of our current embroidery service. Even though our shop is having a facelift, some things will never change: quality clothing, trusted brands, great customer service and value for money.

Camping And Caravans The annual Lachlan Valley Caravan Bush Rally was held at the Kiacatoo Hall grounds last week. The popular rally saw 29 caravans arrive to enjoy a week of camping in a bush setting beside the Lachlan river. Campers were serenaded by resident muso’s Rod, Rob, Jim and Colleen. Each morning the campers feasted on dampers with the camp cooks seeing who could cook the best before a plate of jaffles and toast for breakfast and pots of soup on hot coals for dinner. The club would like to thank all the woodcutters for the firewood they gathered and Judith Buttriss for keeping the coals alight in the early hours. For those who haven’t seen it, The Church in the Paddock was another highlight with its lovely domed ceiling and mosaics. As the weather turned wet the campers retreated to a hall for their Biggest Morning Tea, with tasty food coming from the caravans, decorations and raffles. A total of $617 was raised, with all money going to Cancer Research. The mood of the rally turned silly when members dressed up for the skit pantomime, Cinderfello. Helen Pitt and Ruth Armstrong gathered all costumes for a hilarious few hours! President, Peter Bright, then presided
over the club meeting, welcoming all for attending and reports were read and business discussed. It was noted that Lachlan Valley are one of the four biggest clubs in NSW. Lots of games of rummy and scrabble were enjoyed over the week while fishing and games of tennis were popular for those who were fit along with bush walks. At the end of the week winter seemed to quickly set in so all campers were happy to head back to their home comforts!

Cutting Edge Design
To me when I think of cutting edge design it conjures up images of a sleek and sophisticated look that pushes the boundaries of design and style to a new level. It sets you apart from the rest and perhaps creates a space that has you featuring in your home the latest trends and choices available in the marketplace that may have not been fully adopted by the majority of the general public yet due to their newness in the world of design. It is a constantly changing world with advances in products, building materials and styling finishes happening so often that it takes a keen student to stay in touch with these changes and to embrace them within their own home. I like to think of this approach to design and to including advancements into my work to make my life and my client’s life easier throughout our design process. Make a style file or Moodboard when you start the process of beginning to style your home and at that point collect all the information about what products are available and how you would like to incorporate them into your design. This allows you to do all your research and evaluation early in the project will save you valuable time in the long run as when the contractors need speedy decisions you will be ready to go. So here are my favourite ways to incorporate great design into your world: • Adopting a minimalistic approach to your design will always give you an amazing result that has cutting edge design all over it. • Introducing different building materials into your mix will give a designer edge to your final style. • Metallic finishes scream designer chic at the moment. • Incorporating a true eco friendly element to your home’s design is a must in making your home cutting edge in design and proactive in saving the impact we have on the environment. • Embrace the theory that true cutting edge design allows us to incorporate old with new seamlessly. Decorating and styling your home can really give you an opportunity to express your own inner style in a really tactile way. And I think true cutting edge design is discovering and combining the things that you treasure into a home that you absolutely love.

Beat Colds And Flu! Summer or winter, a cold or flu can take its hold on you. There are a few things you can do to help keep a cold or influenza at bay. Start with some healthy habits: • Get a flu vaccination to reduce the risk of infection. You can still have a flu vaccination at Flannery’s Pharmacy to help protect you this winter. • Wash your hands and home surfaces regularly. • Boost your immune system with Vitamin C or Ethical Nutrients Immune Defence. • Make exercise part of your life to keep your immune system fighting fit. If you do get a cold or flu, you can help prevent others from catching it. • Cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze. The germs travel through the air. • Wash your hands regularly to kill any bacteria that may cause infection. Or reach for that bottle of hand sanitizer. • Throw away used tissues. Keeping bacteria in your pocket is a no-no. How to relieve a cold and the flu? You will need a lot of rest, plenty of fluids and time to allow your cold or flu to run its course. But there are always some extra things that you can do to help minimise your discomfort. • Keep the air moist with a humidifier to ease the throat and nose discomfort. • A soothing, warm liquid such as chicken soup can calm a sore, scratchy throat. • Wash your hands often to avoid spreading infection. If washing is not possible, keeping a small bottle of hand sanitizer in your handbag can be useful. • Take care of your symptoms with overthe-counter medicines such as throat lozenges or sprays, a cough mixture or cold and flu tablets. The team at Flannery’s Pharmacy can help you with advice and products to relieve symptoms or boost your immune system.

AT THE BOX OFFICE with Brayden MOVIE REVIEW
Florence Foster Jenkins Florence Foster Jenkins is based on a true story of Florence’s true love of music and her determination to succeed in her musical career. Set in 1944 New York, Florence, played by Meryl Streep, is married to St Clair Bayfield, played by Hugh Grant. Her devoted husband encourages Florence to succeed in her music career by organising her to perform in front of a crowd of elderly people he had assembled. As was obvious from the start of the movie, she cannot sing at all. My favourite scene in the movie is at the beginning when Florence appeared on stage for the first time. She was dressed as an angel and I expected her to sing like a bird, however she sounded more like a screeching cat that left me in stiches. I think Meryl Streep gave the best performance of the film. This hilariously funny movie will have you laughing throughout. I definitely would
like to see it again. The film is suitable for young and old. I give it 5 stars. By Brayden Dukes-Rankmore

Bathurst Winter Festival
Winter is coming to Bathurst as part of their festival running from 2nd to 16th July. The ‘cool’ event will include an outdoor McDonalds Bathurst ice rink, a Ferris wheel and illumination elements that will be turned on every evening from sundown until 10pm. The illuminations will feature the theme ‘fire and ice’ with the Court House, Carillon, Ribbon Gang Lane, Church Bar and TAFE building key features. Don’t miss out on the interactive element this year where you can throw snowballs at the TAFE building! Ferris wheel tickets can be purchased at the Ferris wheel during the festival at $5 per person and ice skating tickets can be pre-booked online at www.bathurstwinterfestival.com.au. The festival will feature two key nights, the first, opening night on Saturday will be themed, ‘Ignite the Night’. The evening will create a festival atmosphere in Kings Parade with skating, the Ferris wheel and a range of other family friendly activities including a giant six lane slide, a kid’s laser maze and an infinity mirror at the ice rink. Bathurst Youth Council will also run the YJam stage, featuring local young performers and local food and wine will be on offer. On Saturday 9th July ‘Brew and Bite’ will get underway from 4pm. The evening will again offer a range of food and entertainment for everyone including food trucks and regional brewers. A pop up bar will serve regional wines, beers and ciders and the food will take on a distinct street food feel with burgers, gourmet frankfurts, slow cooked lamb, barbecued ribs, Lebanese and more. There will be an ice hockey exhibition and market stalls selling winter woollies, jewellery, candles and clothing and the popular silent disco will return to Court House. Sounds, brr-illiant!

FORBES SPORT
Forbes Swimming Clubhouse Revamp The Forbes Swimming Club has been awarded $10,300 in funding to upgrade their clubhouse. The clubhouse is currently the old canteen based at the pool and at the current time is not weatherproof. The building is quite run down and a long way from ideal for what it is being used for, so the funding will be a great help. The money came from the Stronger Communities program which funds small capital projects in local communities. The funding will allow the club to line the shed to ensure it is weather proof and protects the club’s valuable equipment and ensure it meets modern WHS standards and provides a safe and healthy environment for volunteers. It will also be used to install a small kitchenette that meets food safety standards, install a hot water service and fully repaint the facility. The club’s treasurer is Janelle McManus and she can be contacted on 0458 685 711.

Golfing For Can Assist
On Saturday 11th June the CanAssist Golf Charity Day was held. The four person Ambrose event brought a competition spirit and lots of fun to the venue and a good field of 114 players assembled from Forbes and other local districts, with some players coming as far as Queensland, Sydney and Victoria. The Handicap Winners were J Tranter, S Tranter, D Herbert and M Sykes with a 55 nett. The Scratch winners were G West, D West, J Denamiel and S West with 64. Overall, nett scores were very close. Once again the contribution by sponsors, players and donations was exceptional, with over $2,500 being raised. This will help support local cancer patients in their battle to gain health. On Sunday and Monday a Stableford
Medley was played each day. Fields were slightly down, but each day was well contested. Sunday’s winner was Lee Grierson with 38 points, on count back from Ray Taylor who also had 38 points and Monday’s winner was Doug Churchill with 39 points. This also was a count back win, with Phil Maher coming in second with his 39. Phil took the greatest honours for the day though, scoring a hole-in-one on the 18th. He used a 6-iron to land the ball short and have it bounce onto the green and run into the hole. Both he and the shot are elegance personified! This shot ensured he got the ‘Nearest the Pin’ on that hole. Tomorrow will be the Daine Doolin Memorial event, which is a 4BBB Stableford Medley. Contributed by Short Putt
