NSW Police Commissioner comes to Forbes Tuesday morning saw the first of what will hopefully be a regular occurrence as NSW Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione joined with the Police Minister and Deputy Premier Troy Grant in Forbes recently. Set up as an initiative of Troy Grant, these visits started in the northwest of the state, visiting Gunnedah and Tamworth, followed closely by visits to the mid north coast and now visiting Police Stations in the Central and South West. “It is a great opportunity to discuss the needs of the local staff, the contemporary needs for accommodation and also how functional these offices are,” Troy said. “It affords the local staff the avenue to discuss these needs in person with the Commissioner.” “We are able to make decisions on the spot,

rather than having to delay these decisions and having to go through what is sometimes a very long process,” Andrew said. “With the recent high spate of crime in the Lachlan area, the local staff were able to get on top of this very quickly and they are to be commended.” “In addition, it is evident that the local staff take immense pride in their building and premises, as is evident from the gardens and upkeep at the front of the building”. The local staff really appreciates this visit and the time that both the Minister and Commissioner have taken out of their busy schedules to visit Forbes. Following the visit to Forbes on Tuesday morning, the group then headed off to Temora and West Wyalong.

RANTS and Raves What does it take to get kids reading these days?

MAYORAL NOTES

On last Tuesday we had a really good response from business owners and occupiers of CBD properties in regards to the Forbes CBD Heritage Revival Program. We had 24 people come along to the information sessions and there was a lot of interest in the program. Anyone who is interested in the program and couldn’t attend the information sessions can still find out more by contacting Council on 6850 2300. Another reminder to local accommodation providers, food outlets, businesses and taxi operators to RSVP for the networking evening on Tuesday, July 28 from 6pm at the Forbes Services Club. This is a great opportunity to be proactive in our approach when major events are on such as Vanfest and the Parkes Elvis Festival. Let us know if you would like to attend by calling 6852 4155. Have a great week, stay safe and God bless. Mayor, Cr. Phyllis Miller OAM

“Once upon a time….”Are they not the most glorious words in the English language? And how much time, do we as parents spend reading with our children? It is just so important. A headmaster was heard telling someone at a local school, “Far too often, parents tell me their child is ‘not a reader’. But that’s a copout. It’s a kid’s job to read and a parent’s job to persist for as long as it takes.” The key is to regard reading as a delight rather than a duty. Start early with your children and be theatrical when you read out loud to your children (and grandchildren). Be animated and alive, however most importantly, be present. If you’re not interested and you don’t sound like you care whether Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy gets frightened by Scarface Claw or not, your child will know the difference. Some children want to read the same book over and over again, then great let them do this. A lifelong relationship with a story is a lovely thing. For those long trips, audio books are marvellous. Remember a trip to the local library can be a weekly occurrence to choose a new book and audio. So I would like to challenge all the mums and dads, and the grandparents, to take the time to read with your children and grandchildren and take yourself back to your childhood. Let us know what books your children like and how much time you spend with them reading. If you are part of a children’s reading

Just a Short Drive to

Canowindra

A Great Escape At this time of year, the town of Canowindra is enjoying Christmas in July, a celebration intending to mimic the northern hemisphere’s white wintery Christmases. Many events are organised as part of the celebrations including the Christmas in July Window Competition which inspires local businesses to get into the spirit of Christmas by decorating their shop windows. The old Hardware Shop on Gaskill Street has become a showcase for elaborate window displays that change regularly to reflect either the time of year or a special celebration. The windows are a project of Tommy Jeffs’ from Deli Lama across the road and have become an attraction for visitors to the town. Stop in for a coffee and admire the display from across the street. Canowindra is a historic village nestled among the rolling hills and spectacular landscapes of Cabonne. The town has a reputation of being a friendly and inviting community with warm and helpful locals. The quirky, curvy main street of Canowindra is lined with heritage listed buildings adding to a strong tourism culture built around history, art, food and of course wine. Canowindra is also Australia’s premier balloon flying region – the ultimate way to get a spectacular view of the flawless landscape. The town boasts a thriving restaurant and café culture as well as several incredible vineyards producing some

of the best wines in the region. It’s been five years since Jackie and Geoff Yeo restored the iconic building in Canowindra known to locals as “Finns Store”. Together they transformed the desolate, silent shop into a vibrant centre of social activity. The mix of coffee, food, clothing, jewellery, and furniture gives the shop a sense of old world charm merged with modern expectations. To complement the wonderful food served and the functions being held, the store has recently become fully licensed! Customers have an amazing choice of local and imported beers and local wines. Since it opened, Finns Store has gained the reputation of being one of the regions must visit experiences. Geoff and Jackie believe that the central location of the store gives people an opportunity to make an escape for the day to a venue and town that feels like another world, without needing to travel long distances. Finns Store is a venue where locals can mix with visitors; a venue that promotes wonderful wines, food and art; a venue that has an array of clothing, jewellery and furniture; truly a ‘licensed cafe emporium’ which can make you feel you have entered another world. Check out the Age of Fishes Museum to discover the 360 million year old history of this land.

Friends Of The Forbes Hospital Auxiliary After a short hiatus in 2002, the Friends of the Forbes Hospital Auxiliary reformed in 2004, and currently has 14 members on the committee. This Auxiliary was commenced in 1927 and was then known as the United Hospitals Auxiliary - Forbes Branch. The current members, some of whom have been there for many years, come from a multitude of backgrounds, and bring together a wealth of experience. One lone male, Norm Haley, joins the enthusiastic group, so come on blokes get along to the AGM on 7th August and join in. In the past the Auxiliary has raised funds for a range of pieces of equipment, including larger items such as a new theatre table, emergency trolleys and some new maternity equipment, so they provide an essential part of ongoing welfare for the community. Their fundraising is done by running raffles at major times of the year, including Easter and Christmas. Around $2500 has been raised in the past year and at this point in time even though the money has not been earmarked for anything in particular, they will receive a ‘wish list’ from the Hospital which they will review carefully before deciding where their efforts are best placed.

IMAGE: Glady Brenner, Jean Hodges, Gloria Hayley, Coral McConnell, Ann Williams, Wilma Hepburn and Lee Reynolds, members of the Forbes Hospital Auxiliary, planning for the next fundraiser.

There are many generous benefactors in the town including Woolworths and people who are celebrating a special occasion who request donations to the Auxiliary rather than receive presents. This is a great way to support a charity of your choice. The spirit of a local town is very evident in Forbes and people are very supportive and generous in their time and in donations.

We all know that the backbone of a lot of regional towns is the necessity to have a fully equipped local hospital as it plays such a vital and essential role. The Auxiliary are looking forward to the refurbished hospital being officially open, which should be in the next couple of months. By Cheryl Newsom

NSW Hepatitis Awareness Week; ‘Time For Action’

IMAGE: The blokes from the Forbes Men’s Shed enjoy getting together for a chin-wag.

Local Blokes Loving Life The Men’s Shed is a local committee of the Forbes men who get together from 9am to 12pm every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and they are always looking for new members - ‘the more the merrier’. “We believe in mateship, helping the community and a good cuppa for morning tea” said President Norm Haley. At the moment the men are working on restoring furniture that the people of Forbes have kindly donated to the shed, including chairs, cabinets and a large garden setting and any leftovers or scrap is being recycled and used as kindling which the men sell for $6 a bag, which has been quite handy in this weather of late. The committee has been lucky enough to have signed a running two year contract with the Honey Bee Factory, making wood box presentation packages, which look incredible! “We make 200 boxes per month, and 250 of our packages have recently been sent all over the world, that’s very exciting” said Norm. “We are organising guests such as health and lifestyle speakers to come along and talk

to us, as we like to get one per month. Last month was Australian Hearing and some of us ended up with hearing aids by the end of the day”. Fundraising is a massive part of what the blokes at The Men’s Shed do. If you would like to help out, the men are running a 100 Club with tickets being sold at Bernardi’s IGA and Woolworths. A garage sale will take place this weekend at the Showground, starting at 9am and a sausage sizzle will also be on offer. There will also be a sausage sizzle held at Bunnings in August, September and October but the dates have not yet been confirmed. All the fundraising and donations are going towards deserving charities close to the men’s heart as well as their organisation to help them achieve their goals. “We wish to build our own shed someday in the future”. Anyone wishing to join can simply turn up. Alternatively, please contact the Men’s Shed President Norm Haley on 0428 638 665 or Secretary Leo Butler on 0415 180 059.

Anyone who may think they are at risk of or are living with Hepatitis B & C are being encouraged to take action to help them live with the disease during NSW Hepatitis Awareness Week. The three actions to take are: get tested, have a liver check and ask about treatment. People in high risk categories which include the following, should get tested immediately: • People who have ever injected drugs • People who have been in prison • Anyone who has had a blood transfusion prior to 1990 • People born in China/Hong Kong, Egypt, the Philippines, Malaysia, Vietnam, Pakistan, Cambodia, Italy or other countries with high prevalence of viral hepatitis • Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Island people. Currently around 1,000 Australians die unnecessarily each year of hepatitis-related liver disease, which is a shocking statistic. The single most important and single most effective way to prevent new hepatitis C transmissions is not sharing equipment used to inject drugs. There is a liver clinic located in Dubbo which has dedicated specialist staff delivering liver clinical services. The new drugs are faster, don’t require injections, are much easier to take, have minimal side-effects and have much higher cure rates. Hopefully they will be available soon in Australia. Community Partnerships Program Community not-for-profit organisations in Forbes are being encouraged to apply for funding through the Community Building Partnerships program. “A total of $200,000 is available for community groups within the Orange electorate for building and improving community facilities,” Member for Orange Andrew Gee said. “The Community Building Partnership program allows for community infrastructure to be built, refurbished or enhanced, making an important impact on the day-to-day lives of our local communities,” Mr Gee said. “In many cases the funds will go to much needed social infrastructure with sporting, youth, cultural and community clubs all benefiting from the project funding.” Applications will be assessed on merit against the project criteria and should demonstrate how their project will benefit their local community. The applications period closes at 5pm on Friday 7 August. Applications can be lodged at www.communitybuildingpartnership.nsw. gov.au where additional information about the program and the types of projects that will be eligible for funding are also available. EDUCATION Week 2015

Schools Celebrate Local Heroes Between Monday 27 and Friday 31 July, Education Week is a major event on the NSW public schools calendar and this year the theme is ‘Celebrating Local Heroes’. During Education Week, schools and learning facilities across the state organise and take part in a range of activities including performances, exhibitions, competitions and sports events. “Education Week is a time to celebrate the achievements and successes of our students, teachers and support staff across all NSW public schools,” says NSW Minister for Education Adrian Piccoli. Several special events have been planned in conjunction with Education Week to highlight the quality programs available at Forbes North Public School. Forbes North are inviting all parents, carers and family members to visit the classrooms on Tuesday 28 July to see first-hand the quality learning undertaken each and every day. Classrooms will be open from 11:50am until 12:30pm. Afterwards, a special Education Week assembly will be held in the school hall which will include performances by the school choir and the presentation of Bronze I-Con Certificates to the children who have earned these this year. Everyone is then invited to enjoy a community sausage sizzle lunch prepared by staff from Forbes North’s Community Business Partners Ray White Rural. Traditional Education Week church servic-

es will be held on Wednesday at Northside Chapel and on Thursday there will be a disco in the school hall for Forbes North students from 5pm to 6:30pm. Also as part of the Education Week activities, students from Forbes High School’s Creative and Performing Arts classes will visit Forbes North on Friday July 31 to present a concert to all students from K-6. At Forbes Public School, students learn in a stimulating and challenging environment with a 21st century approach to schooling. To celebrate Education Week, the school has organised many activities including an Open Day at Forbes Public School on Monday July 27 between 10:15 and 11am, as well as a Book Fair in the school library from 8:30am to 3:30pm. A community morning tea will be served in the nature area from 11am to 11:30am. The Forbes Preschool Kindergarten welcome everyone for their individuality, for their ideas and their contributions, believing that for children, Preschool is about fun, love, laughter, friends, learning, exploring and excitement. Every child deserves a beautiful start to a life of education and the staff at Forbes Preschool are proud of what they do showing pride in their roles. For parents and families the Preschool is a comfortable place that they can visit anytime and feel a sense of belonging and pride. They offer a range of resources including traditional, symbolic and sensory play.

The Bite Mezzanine celebrated its 10th anniversary in November last year and owner Janine Whitfield says the café is still thriving today. Here you will find fresh hot coffee by Fish River Roasters, cold press juices and all-day breakfasts. The breakfast menu has a mezz twist while the inventive lunch menu changes every week to keep you guessing. Customers love the style and personal touches at Mezzanine, like the long wooden table made by Janine’s father where you can sit and drink coffee, read, knit or play games; the perfect spot for winter where you can cosy up by the fire and relax. This is a licenced café that can cater to special functions, open from 7am. Gaga’s Café is another fabulous Forbes hotspot and they are turning 1! “In that year I have had customers become friends, people I had never known before, and it’s also been a great way to catch up with people I have known forever,” says Sandra. They will be celebrating their birthday on 1 August and

everyone is invited. This funky cafe has extended their menu to include pastas and soups made fresh in store. This complements an extensive menu of café favourites like burgers, fish, coffee, milkshakes and the original fried chicken that most of us grew up loving. What a Difference a Good Cup of Coffee Makes As part of an initiative of the Forbes Chamber of Commerce, the Chamber invites local businesses to portray their business, their challenges and what their plans are for the future. This week it was Linda Rees turn from Esme’s Coffee Shop which she has owned for 15 years after purchasing it from the Curry’s in November 2000. Linda said she “thought it would be an easy job”. It has turned out to be very labour intensive, and particularly with her food, as everything is home cooked. She concentrates on ‘plain’ home-cooked food and admits they do very well with this type of food. It is particularly appreciated by the older clientele who visit regularly. The biggest change in her business has been the uptake in coffee sales. When Linda changed her brand of coffee to Bills Beans she saw an immediate rise of approximately 25% in sales. Esme’s is the fastest growing coffee reseller of Bills Beans in the Central West. Bills Beans would only allow her to sell their coffee if she agreed to make it the way that they wanted her to make it, as they didn’t want people having coffee served which wasn’t up to their standard. And it has obviously worked for her with sales improving each month.

“One of my main challenges, as I am sure is the same with most businesses is finding, training and keeping the right staff. A surprising number of people, either through absent-mindedness or some other motive, also simply forget to pay. We have put in new technology and this is helping us

streamline how we operate.” If you are looking to take over a great business in Forbes, this business is up for sale, but if you are simply looking for a great cup of coffee then head to Esme’s. By Cheryl Newsom

FLANNERY’S Pharmacy 8 Steps to Healthy Feet Type 2 diabetes is the fastest growing chronic condition in Australia with 280 diagnosed every day... that’s one every 5 minutes! Foot care is particularly important if you have diabetes. Foot problems are a common complication of this condition and a person whose nerves are damaged by diabetes may not realise they have minor cuts or blisters, which can lead to ulcers. People with diabetes are at increased risk for milder problems with their feet that are not specific to diabetes but may occur more frequently due to problems with the nerves and circulation to the feet. Foot problems can be avoided if you take care of your feet and act quickly when you have a problem. 1. Know your feet well – wash, dry and check your feet every day. Check for redness, swelling, cuts, discharge, splinters and blisters. Make sure you check between toes, around the heels and nail edges and the soles of the feet. 2. Cut your toenails straight across (not into the corners) and gently file any sharp edges. 3. Moisturise your feet daily to avoid dry skin 4. Cover your feet with a clean sock or stocking without rough seams 5. Protect your feet in a shoe that fits well 6. Keep your feet away from direct heat such as heaters, hot water bottles and electric blankets 7. Get medical advice early if you notice any changes or problems 8. Get your feet checked at least once a year by your doctor or podiatrist For more information or advice, call in and speak to the Pharmacist at Flannery’s Pharmacy or Life Pharmacy.

P&C Community Engagement Forum

IMAGE: Is your child’s school a part of the Sporting Schools program yet?

Sporting Schools Kicks Off Has your children’s school signed up to be a part of the Sporting Schools program? Member for Calare John Cobb recently announced that 59 local schools in the Calare Electorate have signed up to be a part of the Sporting Schools initiative – the biggest change to school sport in over a decade. Launched on July 20 this year, the Sporting Schools program is part of a $100 million Federal Government initiative that aims to keep children fit, healthy and above all happy, and all schools in the area have been invited to take part in the participation-focused program. “This is one of the Government’s cornerstone preventative health programs aimed to improve our children’s health through getting more kids involved in physical activity,” John Cobb said. “Being involved in this new program will expand sporting opportunities for children before, during and after school hours at primary schools.” With a quarter of Australian children said to be overweight or obese, it is a frightening statistic that many children in Australia lack the basic skills like running, catching, throwing and kicking. These are skills that not only contribute to basic health and fitness, but are skills needed in everyday life. John Cobb suggested that three quarters of kids in Australia spend the greater portion of their spare time watching television and only one third of children achieve the recommended hour of physical activity each day.

“Sporting Schools is designed to deliver sports in line with local schools’ needs and ultimately to get the children of the region active, engaged and having fun through sport more often,” said John Cobb. “Our new program is so important to ensuring current and future generations of Australian kids keep fit, healthy and happy.” In Australia, 13,000 annual deaths have been attributed to physical inactivity. In NSW only about a quarter of children between 5 and 15 years old do at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity each day. “Research shows there’s been a definite reduction in the fundamental movement skills and competencies of our children, especially over the past 15 years.” said Dr Juanita Weissensteiner, senior consultant of AIS. “There is evidence that children who struggle with fundamental skills have a higher tendency to drop out of sport when they reach their teens,” Dr Weissensteiner said. “Developing fundamental skills early can lead to greater self-belief and enjoyment, creating the potential for a life-long connection with sport and physical activity.” The Sporting Schools launch was also supported by the release of a new online guide offering parents tips on how best to nurture their child’s interest in taking up a sport as well as maintaining it as they grow older. Schools can sign up for the program at www. sportingschools.gov.au where a link to the online guide is also available. By Rosi Broom

The Far West electorate is holding 2 community engagement forums, the first of which will be held in Forbes on 31 July at Forbes High School as the Federation of Parents and Citizens Associations of NSW (P&C Federation) hold a number of community engagement forums throughout 16 electoral areas in NSW. “The forums aim to empower P&C Associations with resources and information so that parents and communities can better contribute to decision making that improves the education of students,” said P&C Federation Councillor for the Far West electorate, Natalie Walker. “Parents as partners in the education of students is not a new concept but as our education system is continuously evolving through new policy, funding changes and changing needs of students, assisting parents and community members to contribute in a meaningful way is more important than ever,” said Natalie. There is a need to encourage more parents and community members to become involved as well as assisting them to contribute in a way that effectively directs resources and education efforts to meet the particular needs of students in schools. “P&C Federation wants your input so that our advocacy is truly reflective of our members and school communities,” Natalie said. “These forums are a great opportunity to network, share ideas, discuss what fundraising opportunities are available to P&C Associations and raise concerns specific to electoral areas.” “All the information P&C can gather in order to assist in the delivery of better service to P&C Associations is across the state,” said Natalie. The community engagement forums is a program with funding support from the NSW Government and administered by the NSW Department of Education. For more information, check out the P&C Federation website at www.pandc.org.au and follow the links to register.

Forbes Sport MENS GOLF

Rain Causes Cancellations But Doesn’t Dampen Spirits The rain was welcome by many, but was not so enjoyable for the golfers at Forbes. Very wet conditions before the weekend caused the cancellation of Saturday competition golf, but a sunny Saturday afternoon enabled some play on Sunday. On Saturday it was quite disturbing to see golfers yelling “I want to play” being dragged off the course, but they were very keen. I am careful to add that no children or animals were harmed during those events. The scene across the course was one of casual water in many places and a very soggy ground. Best to wait until it improved. Saturday’s competition was to be the first round of the Mens Foursomes Championships. These will now be held on 29-30 August, replacing a stroke competition. This may not suit all, but with other commitments this is the next available weekend. Sunday’s 18 hole Stableford Medley was like a godsend to those who need their weekly dose. A field of 35 players was a testament to the desire by all to enjoy some wonderful balmy conditions. The winner on the day was Steve Uphill, with 40 points, on count back from Laurie O’Connor (40). It was interesting that groups

in which these front runners played had difficulty in identifying their own ball. The Ball sweep went to 35 points and included: 39 - A Dukes, B Carpenter, 37 – B Webb, 36 – P Dawson, 35 – B Shine, P Maher, P Nixon. Yep, it was certainly a day for the big hitters! The NTP’s went to – 9th: P Grayson, 18th: R Williams. There were only two 2’s, one on the 3rd and one on the 18th. I presume that despite the sun the air was pretty heavy and there was very little run, thus making it difficult to judge the correct shot. Any excuse to help out a golfer. This week the schedule is for a 12-hole event at Parkes, on July 23. It is the usual gathering at 12:30 am for a 1:00 pm start. Bring your snorkel and flippers, just in case. In November Forbes GC holds the Nissan Classic weekend, with this year being the 25th staging of this event. This has become a primary calendar event, with many players from a range of clubs stencilling this into the diaries. To ensure continued success we need to have a vibrant Committee. The Classic organisers have scheduled an open meeting to garner support to organise this event. The meeting will be held on Thurs-

day 30 July at the Sportsman’s Hotel, commencing at 6 pm. If anybody is interested in helping out, or just interested to find out more, please attend the meeting. Our golfer’s ability spreads far and wide. Not only does King John ply his golf skills in Pennants in Sydney, but other members cast a shining beacon wherever they go. Sue Shine recently had some time at Port Stephens, and enjoyed some golf. Every course Sue played she easily scored 35 points or more. Such versatility and consistency was marvellous. In order to keep up, Barry Shine had to do something spectacular, as his golf was pretty ordinary. And that he did – he scored a Hole-in-One at the Palms course. It was a classic controlled shot against the breeze, always on target, and judged to perfection. Forbes players shine again. It’s crystal ball time: Saturday 25 July is the 4BBB Stableford Multiplier, sponsored by Ace Machining. Choose a steady partner with plenty of patience as this could be quite traumatic. In fact it would be ‘real ace’ to score points on every hole. Sunday 26 July is the Stableford Medley. By Short Putt.

RUGBY LEAGUE The formidable Forbes Magpies faced off against the Cobar Roosters on Saturday July 18. The First Grade team put on a powerful show and won their game with a score of 5632. The League Tag team had a tight match, but won the day with a score of 14-12. The Reserves won their game with a score of 4414 and the Under 18s team had a bye.

RUGBY UNION

The Forbes Platypi went up against the Bathurst Bulldogs on July 18. The First Grade team lost to the Bulldogs with a score of 2910. The Second Grade team also went down 50-0 in a disappointing weekend for the Forbes side.
