CHEERS!... Two life members of the Forbes Handicraft Centre, Margaret Wood and Glad Johnson, had the honour of blowing out the candles on the 45th anniversary cake on Wednesday.

Home Made Stands The Test Of Time!

Good ideas never get old and the Forbes Handicraft Centre is living proof, celebrating its 45th anniversary this week. Three Forbes women took the initiative in 1971 to convert a good idea into reality and today just over 100 members ranging from 21 to 95 years are still benefitting. “It is a big achievement to reach 45 years, including surviving the 10 year drought,” said Kathy Bray, Publicity Officer. “From the very beginning the idea was to give local and country women an outlet for their work and an association with other craft people,” she said. Profits have always been donated to local charities or deserving causes, and according to Kathy this is still the ethos of the group today.

Over the years a variety of classes and workshops have been held to expand members’ skills. “It is the wish of our group to continue to serve the community for many years,” said Kathy, although there is a feeling that craft making is dying. Kathy and other members see hope in their grandchildren, who are interested in learning crafts. “Even if one child in a family picks up the skills, we might keep it going.” It is the aim of many members to teach their grandchildren to carry on crafting. “People still love home made items,” said a member. The most popular items at the centre are baby wear, seasonal items, plants, baked goods, preserves and fresh fruit and vegetables.

THUMBS UP... THUMBS DOWN MAYORAL NOTES Census night was on Tuesday, 9th August, but don’t panic if you haven’t received your form yet or have not completed it as there is still time left until 21st August as long as it is a reflection of Tuesday night. The last Council session to help community members with their Census will be next Wednesday at the library from 9am to 12pm and 1 to 4pm. If you need any assistance, call Amy or Blake at the Council on 6850 2300. Council is currently updating its text messaging system as another means of communicating with the community. The messages will include information such as closure of sporting fields, upcoming event notifications, road closures and important information in times of flooding. If you want to be on the text message database, contact Amy on 6850 2361 or email amy.millerd@forbes.nsw.gov.au. As the Council election is on 10th September this will be my last column due to the rules and regulations of the Office of Local Government. You will be hearing from the General Manager, Danny Green until after the election of the Mayor on 15th September. I would like to thank everyone for their support during the past four years. Please remember to take voting seriously as Local Government is the government closest to the people. So make sure to vote on the 10th on your way to the Forbes Show, or on your way home. Have a great week, stay safe and God bless. Mayor, Cr Phyllis Miller OAM

Start Preparing To Shine At The BOSCARS The media launch of the Forbes Business Awards, BOSCARS, last week created a lot of interest not only from past winners, and participants in the regional awards, but also from many local business owners. The event was hosted by Chairman of the Forbes Business Chamber, Chris Roylance, and launched by Vicki Seccombe of the NSW Business Chamber Orana Region. Vicki encouraged all businesses to enter and to take time over each entry, not leaving it until the last minute. She recommended that any businesses entering should review the questions related to the category they wanted to enter before deciding if it was the correct category for their business. She also said that when allowing time to go through your entry, ensure

that you check and re-read your answers, and to make sure you are selling what your business does and is successful in doing. There are nine different categories to choose from, and if you need assistance please call anybody on the Chamber committee or Vicki at the NSW Business Chamber office in Orange on 6311 2203. The closing date for entries is 29th August. There is not a lot of time left to start preparing your entry. A panel of independent and respected business leaders from outside the region will judge submissions. Finalists will be announced on 30th September. Winners will be announced at a James Bond themed Gala Dinner on Friday, 28th October. Start planning to treat your staff to an exciting night out.

RURAL ROUNDUP A Great Season In The Making Things just keep getting better. What a month it has been: we have seen both sheep and cattle reach record highs, especially in the cattle market. With widespread rain over the last month we are seeing the makings of a great season, which is fantastic. On the sheep side of the market we have seen all markets very strong. We are also noticing a good number of new season suckers coming onto the market that are receiving very strong competition and seeing the best of them make up $160 and $170, but take note with more numbers due to come onto the market these prices will only be sustainable for the best of them. On the trade and export markets we are still seeing prices in the mid to high $6/kg for the better finished lambs. The mutton market is still kicking along very strongly with most grades hovering around the 400c/kg mark. The cattle market is still going from strength to strength with good feeder cattle attracting record prices with well bred steers reaching up to $4.25c/kg. These prices are bringing some great returns for clients. We are still seeing some good lines of grain fed cattle coming through the yards with grain fed steers making $3.40 to $3.90/ kg, and the heifer portion making up to $3.70/kg. The cow market is still very strong with some of the best euro cows making in excess of $2.90/kg, but the majority of the good 3 and 4 score cows are still around the $2.50-$2.80/kg mark. With spring just around the corner we are

starting to see some strong activity from restockers trying to either restock or make use of ample feed. I think during the spring we will see very strong competition for all types of restocker livestock. With all this in mind I think we are in for very interesting times. For any other information on market trends or marketing options don’t hesitate to call us. By Adam Chudleigh

YOUR Wealth Matters Hi everyone, I wanted to draw your attention to the influence the media has over us. Unlike quality publications such as The Forbes Phoenix, some media outlets draw their audience by constantly trying to have us living in fear. And matters regarding wealth are not immune to this problem. Take for example the headline in the Daily Telegraph recently, ‘Super funds delivering small returns’… Now reading that headline and the first paragraph talking about the lowest returns in 4 years (3% growth on average), you’d possibly be left with a negative sentiment towards super. However, anyone who read the article through until completion would have read that the median growth fund has delivered average annual returns of 8.8% over the last seven years. Hardly cause for alarm that last financial year only returned 3%! We can go through life listening to all the ‘noise’ projected our way (read: rubbish), or we can ignore the noise, look between the lines and find quality, independent information that allows us to make informed and confident decisions going forward. Quite simply, superannuation is just a tax structure. It’s the best legal tax break in town. The fact is that anyone who doesn’t like super just doesn’t understand super. Those who understand it are using it to build retirement nest eggs in a tax effective way that will enable them to pay themselves a decent income in retirement. You have enormous control over your superannuation… Therefore, make sure you understand how your super is invested and what fees you’re paying so that you maximise it for the many days you look forward to enjoying being retired. Cheers, Daniel

Run Against Violence Ultra-marathon runner, Kirrily Dear, was in Forbes recently to attend the screening of the documentary Iceberg highlighting her 862km run from Walgett to Forbes in 2014. Run Against Violence, who produced the film, was established to use running and other sporting activities as a conduit for educating and engaging communities in family violence prevention. The route chosen for her run included three of the top ten local government areas affected by domestic violence. Kirrily said she was deeply moved by the many disclosures and confronting personal accounts of domestic violence she received during the run. She believes there is power in storytelling.

White Ribbon Ambassador and co-chair of the Forbes Domestic Violence Committee, Charles Dwyer, stressed the importance of providing support for people affected by domestic violence and providing them with an opportunity to have a voice.

Olympic Gold For Riverina Locals

Australia won the first ever gold medal awarded in women’s rugby sevens after beating New Zealand 24-17 at the Rio Games this week. Two of the players, Alicia Quirk and Sharni Williams, are from the Riverina. Federal Member for Riverina, Michael McCormack, congratulated the team and the two local players on their gold medal success. He said he was delighted to know both girls personally. “Alicia and Sharni are very inspiring people and fantastic role models for young athletes in the Riverina and elsewhere,” Michael said.

Alicia was Kildare Catholic College’s school caption in 2009. “Sharni once beat me in an arm wrestle at a presentation night at her old school – Batlow Technology High – although some would say that is not a difficult feat!” Michael was pleased to give the two sportswomen their first national media shout-out on Sky News just moments after their success on Tuesday morning. “It’s always great to give the Riverina and its many talented people a plug in the national media,” Michael said.

Local boy Tom Drane won a title and a third place in the Junior Australian Dirt Track Championships last weekend in Gunnedah. Tom took part in three different divisions this year. He won the 85cc modified competition for 7-10 years, retaining his title from last year. Tom started another new class this year, 85cc 2stroke to 150cc 4 stroke 9-11years. He won a number of heats over the two days and came third in the final. He also moved up to an older division of the 65cc 9-13 years in which he won a number of heats to qualify 6th overall for the final. In the final his ignition failed in the second lap and forced him to finish the final early. Tom was joined by a number of riders from Forbes including Sam Drane, Holly and Hugh Hope-Hodgetts and Beau Bailey. They competed in the Nippers 50cc Demo Division and all of them rode extremely well. Tom’s next race will be in September competing in the NSW Long Track Titles at the Central Coast. He will also swap his bikes for go karts next month to compete in the Southern Star Series and the NSW Kart Titles at Manning Valley.

A proud and happy Tom Drane.
