WIN TWO TICKETS TO BEDGERABONG PICNIC RACES Saturday, 29th April 2017. Six race program commencing at 1.30pm. GOLDEN WIN… Evolution’s Jake Klein (middle) is joined by Don Harwin, MLC, and Katrina Hodgkinson, Member of Parliament for the seat of Cootamundra, where Cowal mine is located.

Gilded Win For Cowal Gold

The Cowal Gold mine won the NSW Mining Operation of the Year Award at the NSW Mining Industry and Suppliers Awards last Thursday. Cowal was recognised for its outstanding performance in 2016 on a number of fronts. The operation not only exceeded its planned production targets and completed an ambitious exploration program, but also experienced a record flood event that affected local towns and farms and isolated workers and restricted mine supplies. Cowal successfully managed through this event and was actively involved in flood mitigation and relief work in communities in the region. The exploration program supported the plan for the proposed mine life extension by eight years, which had been approved by the board of Evolution.

Evolution’s Executive Chairman, Jake Klein, said: “I had the honour of collecting the award which was a wonderful recognition of the incredible work our people at Cowal have achieved over the past year. “The event is about celebrating the people and businesses that make NSW Mining strong and acknowledging the communities in which we operate that are pivotal to any mining company’s strength and success. The award would not have been possible without the support of the Bland, Lachlan and Forbes Shires.” NSW Minister for Resources, Energy, Utilities and the Arts, Don Harwin MLC focused in his keynote address on the importance of mining in fostering the growth and strength of regional communities at the ceremony.

EDITORS NOTE... MAYORAL NOTES Forbes hosted the NSW Lions Youth of the Year state final on Saturday night at the Forbes Services Memorial Club. A Mayoral reception was held at the Town Hall before the event and it was my pleasure to welcome all the state finalists of the five districts of Lions and their families to Forbes. The contestants presented very well and the winner was Ava Del Tufo, who was sponsored by the Pambula Merimbula Lions Club. Youth Week was such a fantastic event last week and it was great to see so many young people involved in the activities. Students from Forbes High School and Red Bend Catholic College had a great time during their Colour Runs. At YouthFest on Friday night there was spectacular talent on display. Over the weekend, Council staff promoted the draft Our Forbes Shire Community Strategic Plan and attended the Rotary Ipomoea Markets and the Bedgerabong Country Fair. Yesterday we had two public meetings in the Forbes Town Hall. We are still encouraging residents to make sure

Dear Easter Bunny, Could you please fill my eggs with health and happiness and deliver them to everyone that I love? Easter is not only a symbol of hope, renewal and new life, but also an opportunity to spend quality time with your loved ones and sharing lots of chocolate of course! If you are going camping, take time to really look at the sky and tell your sky stories to each other. You might even be inspired to join the Skywriters project - see our story on page 4. Or you might think of the wonderful community you live in. When we ask people why they like living in Forbes, so many say it is because of the supportive community. This is once again demonstrated in the story on page 4 about the Forbes Rugby Club giving generously to community groups, and on page 5 the wonderful opera organised to help Ava Garland and her family. Wishing you all a happy and safe Easter! Maggi Barnard Editor Races and the Easter Bowls competition. On behalf of Council, I wish everyone a lovely Easter break and please drive safely. Westpac Celebrates 200th With Customers

Westpac, Australia’s first and oldest bank, celebrated its 200th anniversary last week. Westpac opened its doors as the very first bank in Forbes 146 ago. Customers were invited to help celebrate last Thursday with Forbes Bank Manager, Shannon Crowley telling customers their patronage were valued. He also thanked his team for all the hard work they put in. He asked Judith (Jude) Taylor, one of his favourite customers to help cut the cake. “Jude always comes in and have a conversation. It is so much more than just about banking. I enjoy talking to customers,” said Shannon. One customer asked about the history of the building at 90 Lachlan Street and Shannon brought a framed collection of photographs of the bank’s buildings over the years. He said they were in the process of planning a revamp on the outside, as Wespac was housed in one of the beautiful buildings in Forbes. Westpac was established in 1817 as the Bank of New South Wales.

QUESTION of the week

The Forbes Medical Centre’s extensions were officially opened by Professor Nicholas Zwar, Dean of Medicine, University of Wollongong and Michael McCormack MP last week. The extensions include an extra three consulting rooms for doctors and visiting specialists, and a multi purpose room with state of the art teaching facilities for medical students.

Double demerits for Easter: Double demerit points will be in force for five days over the Easter holiday period across the state starting today until Monday, 17th April. Double demerit points will apply to all speeding, seatbelt, mobile phone and motorcycle helmet offences. NSW Police will also be targeting dangerous driving behaviours such as drink driving and driver fatigue. “Drivers should be warned they are at greatest risk of losing their licence during this period. There will be more Police on the roads and therefore more chance of getting caught and losing points,” said Parkes, Forbes and Lachlan Shire Councils’ Road Safety and Injury Prevention Officer, Melanie Suitor. “I ask all drivers to remain vigilant over the Easter period. We all have a part to play in reducing the amount of crashes and risks.” Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea: This May, Cancer Council NSW is encouraging people across western NSW to organise an Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea event to help raise $4.9 million in NSW to help beat cancer. Now in its 24th year, the day is one of Cancer Council’s leading fundraising events

and the largest, most successful event of its kind in Australia. Funds raised help support life-saving cancer research, prevention, advocacy and local support services. While the official date is Thursday, 25th May, people can register to host their own event any time until the end of June. Simply register online as a host, set a date and start sending out invites. An event can be anything from a small gathering at home or in your workplace to a community bake off competition in your local area. Register at biggestmorningtea.com.au or call 1300 65 65 85 to receive your free morning tea host kit. Rugby Lunch Goodwill Spreads To Community

The Forbes Skywriters met at the library for the first time last week. At the back is Rochelle Bright with Merrill Findlay, initiator of the project, and in front are Trudy Smith, Elaine Imire and Nelle Norrie.

We All Have A Sky Story To Tell

“The sky has no national borders or ethnic divisions. We all share the sky and we all have sky stories in our lives.” This is what inspired Forbes-based author Merrill Findlay to start the Skywriters project. After many years of spending time in war zones and with refugees and asylum seekers as a freelance writer, Merrill was looking for something that would unite people. Last Thursday Forbes became the 10th of 12 locations over a 700km area where the Skywriters Project has been launched. “It’s been fantastic so far, overwhelming,” said Merrill of the almost 800 people who had already signed up. “Not one person has had the same experience or story.” Skywriters will create sky stories of up to 3,000 words in any genre for a Skywriter’s anthology to be published in 2019 to coincide with the 50th anniversary of humanity’s first steps on the moon. With the Parkes radio telescope playing a vital role

in the first moon landing, Merrill is planning a first social event for the Skywriters at The Dish. Apart from leading workshops and individual sessions with editors to hone their skills and get their work to publishable quality, Merrill also sees the project as a way of building a supportive network of rural writers. “People in the bush have a lot of creativity, but they are also very isolated.” The Skywriters Project is part of a larger initiative, the Big Skies Collaboration, a creative coming together of arts practitioners, astronomers and local communities to celebrate millennia of astronomies on the inland plains and share their stories about their own or other people’s relationships with the cosmos. “We are still very privileged to see clear night sky – all the more reason to tell what it is to have a big sky,” said Merrill. By Maggi Barnard

Six community groups and individuals were on the receiving end of funds raised at the sixth President’s lunch of the Forbes Rugby Club. Chris Sweeney, organiser of the lunch, said it was great to be able to support the community. “The lunch is not all about rugby. It is great for over 800 people to come together and have fun, but it is just as wonderful to be able to support our community.” Over the past six years we have been able to give $100,000 back to the community, while the club boosted its funds by the same amount. Chris said anyone wanting to attend next year’s lunch should keep 17th March 2018 open. This year the beneficiaries were the Forbes Badminton Club, Forbes Running and Triathlon Club, Forbes Toy Library, Forbes Public School Special Unit and the Garland family all receiving $1,800. The Forbes Town and District Band received $300 for performing at the lunch. The Forbes Public School assisted on the day with rubbish collection.

The recipients are (L-R) Michelle McGregor (Forbes Public School special education), Jay Bhakta (Forbes Badminton Club), Olivia Turner with Miles (Forbes Toy Library), Russell Brown (Forbes and District Town Band), Wendy Baker with Sid (Forbes Toy Library), Kathy Garland with Ava, Chris Sweeney and Nick Turner (Forbes Running and Triathlon Club).

Prestigious Lions Event Held In Forbes Ava Del Tufo won the state final of the Lions Youth of The Year Quest hosted by the Forbes and District Lions Club at the Forbes Services Memorial Club on Saturday. The 17-year-old from Ulladulla High School, was sponsored by the Pambula Merimbula Lions Club. She was an accomplished speaker with a resumé that would do credit to any 50-year-old, and stood out in every category. Ava will next compete in the national final in Hobart on the 8th May. Ava was one of five contestants for this year’s award: Ragavi Jeyakumar from Presbyterian Ladies College Armidale; Phoebe McIlwraith from Morisset High School; Charles O’Neill from All Saints College, Ba-

thurst; and Jade Lin from Presbyterian Ladies College Sydney. The judges were Phyllis Miller, Charles Pecenka from Parkes, Aidan Clarke from Forbes, Stephen King from Red Bend Catholic College and Rochelle Bright, formerly from Canberra and a recent resident of Forbes. The stand-by judge was Will Lawrance, last year’s state winner. The more than 100 people from around NSW attending were impressed with Forbes. Many commented on how lovely the town looks with our beautiful historic buildings and the well-manicured lawns and walkways around our lake. By Peter Bright

Opera Singers Raise The Roof And Thousands For Ava

An audience of almost 300 people were treated to a unique and entertaining afternoon of opera in Forbes last Saturday and raising more than $14,000 for the Garland family. The Opera for Ava fundraiser saw principal soloist for Opera Australia, Dominica Matthews as well as Diego Torre from Mexico and Kathleen Moore from Canada come together for an afternoon of top class singing. It was a huge success! In glorious weather guests enjoyed background music provided by the Four Strings quartet, while enjoying canapés prepared by the Red Bend hospitality unit. Sipping Millthorpe’s Angullong champagne and wine, and boutique beers from Orange’s Badlands Brewery, the 270 patrons from near and far enjoyed every minute in the lead up to the performance. Diego, Dominica and Kathleen were absolutely captivating with their incredible voices, with arias from many classic operas such as La traviata, La boheme and Lakme. After a short interval they switched to more contemporary tunes from shows including Carousel, Sweet Charity and Porgy and Bess. The singers then lifted the roof with their encore, Nessum dorma from the opera Turandot, no doubt a highlight for many. Ac-

companist Barbara Bruce was exceptional, remaining consistent throughout the whole performance. MC Adrian Matthews (Dominica’s brother) kept the ball rolling with a touch of humour and his debatable Italian, as well as bringing several to tears as he described the Garlands journey so far and reminded everyone of the reason for the event. It was fantastic to see plenty of locals turn out to support this family, but the calibre of the artists also attracted people from as far away as Dubbo, Cassilis, Griffith and Sydney! It was truly an afternoon to remember! By Kylie Matthews

New Honey Bee Research Centre To Create A Buzz A new Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) led by The University of Western Australia (UWA) will provide a much-needed boost to Australia’s valuable, but largely untapped honey bee products, by bringing together both industry and academic expertise from across Australia. Dr Liz Barbour, from UWA’s Office of Research Enterprise, said the CRC for Honey Bee Products would resolve current industry problems that limited the value and expansion of the industry. Products include honey, beeswax, pollen, royal jelly, venom and honey bee export. “At present, honey bee product value is estimated at $125 million,” Dr Barbour said. “What is often overlooked is that 44 of our

food crops wholly or in part rely on honey bee pollination which adds an additional farm gate value of $6.5 billion. With the new Australian focus of fine food export, healthy bees are an essential ingredient for success.” “Australia, especially Western Australia, has one of the healthiest honey bee populations in the world so no antibiotics or chemicals from bee husbandry contaminate the products. Whilst Australia is surrounded by bee diseases, through our quarantine efforts, the worst (including the sucking mite, Varroa) have not yet reached our shores.” Bee disease is a big threat to Australia’s agricultural production.

RURAL ROUNDUP Wool Auction Raises Record Amount For Charity More than 60 guests were at the Parkes Services Club last Thursday to toast the success of Quality Wool’s recent charity wool auction for Ronald McDonald House Westmead. The auction raised $77,000 to assist seriously ill children and their families. Quality Wool’s New South Wales Operations Manager Chris Scott said the company was thrilled with the result and thanked all growers who donated wool for the auction from the Riverina to the Central and Western regions. “Our wool drive for Ronald McDonald House Westmead was again well supported and with the delayed auction timing this year, it was great to see a number of new growers donating wool,’’ Chris said. “We had donations from our stores in Parkes, Orange, Wagga Wagga and Condobolin, as well as from near Oberon, Dub-

bo, Gilgandra and Coonamble, and down to Grenfell and Young.’’ Buoyed by a flourishing wool market and a delay in the sale fixture this year that helped increase growers’ wool donations for the auction to some 14,000 kilograms (93 bales), this year’s total of $77,000 easily eclipsed last year’s figure of just over $55,000. Quality Wool visited farms to pick up donated wool and clean out sheds for growers, and it pressed and auctioned the wool free of charge. The Australian Wool Testing Authority also tested the wool for free, ensuring all proceeds would go to Ronald McDonald House Westmead. In its fifth year, the charity wool auctions have raised over $225,000 for the home away from home that supports families with seriously ill children attending The Children’s Hospital Westmead.

Michael Coles and Mick Willmott from Forbes.

Jemalong Wool Weekly Market Update This week saw buyer confidence leave the market on the first day of selling, resulting in a 50-100 cents correction, however day two saw confidence return allowing the market to regain some lost ground and set a positive course, as we head into the final sale before the Easter Recess. Overall, the skirting market mirrored the fleece, with lack of buyer support pushing prices down with most descriptions losing between 50 and 100 cents for the week. The crossbred sector continued to find good support with only minor movements, while the carding market (which has been solid for many weeks) finally suffered a large correction with all three carding indicators falling an average of 37 cents. Despite the large correction over the past two weeks, quantities continue to remain high, with over 46,000 bales currently rostered for sale next week, with selling on Tuesday and Wednesday to accommodate the Easter break. TOPICALTrivia The first chocolate Easter eggs were produced in the 1800s and since then they have become a favourite Easter tradition. With so much chocolate around this weekend, it’s bound to get messy. Here’s how to deal with chocolate stains. Use a spoon to gently scrape off excess chocolate. Try not to rub any further into the fabric. Flush the back of the stain with cold running water or soda water. Don’t use warm or hot water as it will set the stain. Rub a few drops of dishwashing liquid into the stain and blot it with a damp cloth. Rinse well and wash as normal.

#MONTEfamousreview A SWEET SLICE OF POP TARTIE – YOUR TODAY Your Today by Melbourne artist Tartie is an EP that is filled with a beautiful mix of pop tracks. Each track highlights Tartie’s sweet voice. Starting off with the haunting Anything at all, then moving to the upbeat Dorothy, a song about a child’s rusted bike, and within two songs you are hooked on Tartie’s brand of pop. It is upbeat with dark undertones. The thought that Tartie puts into her songs is evident from the outset. Her songs turn unhappiness into beauty with a beat that keeps you wanting more. She is courageous, elegant and authentic. Your Today is the pop album you should have in your collection for autumn 2017!

WHAT’S Hot Double demerits apply for five days in NSW from today to Monday, 17th April inclusive. The standard penalty for mobile phone offences rose to four demerit points last year, and it was included in double demerit periods. This means those caught talking or texting while driving this long weekend will incur eight demerit points – a huge amount on unrestricted licences’ 13 points. Download the my nrma app - you can find the cheapest fuel, order roadside assistance and parking using it. Please drive safely and take extra care on the roads.

Paige Ellison How long have you lived in Forbes and what do you like about living here? I have lived in Forbes my whole life so 17 years. My favourite thing is the Forbes Lake as it can be very beautiful, especially in the morning and evening watching the sun rise or go down. Where do you work and what do you enjoy most about your work? I am currently a full-time student in year 12 at Forbes High School. I really love the people that I have met throughout my schooling years. What do you do to unwind after school and on weekends? I always play music, any instrument, any song, just always playing music to unwind. What are you really good at? I am good at singing. I also like to think that I am secretly a good cake baker! If you could have a super power, what would it be? My super power would definitely be invisibility - that would be pretty cool just to be able to hide from responsibilities! What is your pet hate? My pet hate is when people send the thumbs up emoji ... Tell us about your best holiday ever. The best holiday I ever had was when we travelled around outback Queensland for two weeks. We just went exploring and fishing everywhere, we got flooded in a town called Windora, but I didn’t mind because they had the most stunning red sand hills which we watched the sun set over. It was simply great!

YOUR Wealth Matters

Will Your Retirement Be Spent On The Dole? If you ever read through the comments sections of online news articles about government debt, you’ll find numerous people complaining about how it is going to rob our children of lifestyle in the future and that a simple solution is to stop handing out the dole to those bludgers who are too ‘lazy’ to work. These are likely the same people who will be happy to go on the ‘dole’ when they’re older. The definition of someone on the dole is a person who is unemployed and reliant on welfare to make ends meet, which describes most Australian retirees! Somehow, I don’t think they would see it that way, nor do I… but how will you feel when you get to 67 if you can’t afford to pay the bills without receiving welfare payments? This is the reality most Australians face in retirement. It’s time we recognise the simple facts that we are living longer and longer and that it’s not the government’s job to pay for any of us to be retired. In a first world country like Australia we will continue to pay an age pension to ensure people can survive, but if you’re like most people, I don’t believe you want to wake up at retirement and discover you’ve worked your entire adult life to then spend the next 30-40 years just ‘surviving’. At Wealth Train, we don’t want to see people surviving in retirement, we want to see them thriving! Get on board and learn how. Cheers, Daniel Daniel McGregor is a founding partner of Wealth Train, an Australian Financial Services Licence Holder (474966) empowering Australians with financial education. The Red Bend Cattle team in the cattle shed at the Sydney Royal Easter Show with Br Michael and Susan Earl (left).

Moovellous Experience For Cattle Team At Sydney Royal

The Red Bend cattle team returned from the Sydney Royal Easter Show not only with a first and third place ribbon but also a host of great memories. Lunch Box 2, one of the purebred Limousin steers, was placed first in the middleweight class and our lightweight Limousin steer, Kubota was placed third in his class. Both steers were bred by Phil and Sheridan Kirk – parents of a student, Laura. Four steers were auctioned following judging and Lunch Box 2 was sold for $7.00/kg – amazing what people will pay for a ribbon. The other three sold well. The remainder of the six steers will be sold over the grid. The steers were next judged on the hook (carcass) with the results announced at the end of the week. On Monday Mikayla Carey, Natalie Hayes, Kelsey Muller and Laura Kirk competed in the state finals of the beef cattle parading

with Mikayla gaining a fifth place. Mitch Rubie was also placed fifth in the state finals of the meat sheep judging. Kelsey and Natalie were competing in the state finals for fruit and vegetables, grain and sheep. Apart from the judging the students gained so much more: from meeting students from other schools, talking with people from the beef industry, the media, interacting with the public and shopping at Woolworths Rosehill all added to their life experience. The ten students at the show represented Red Bend immensely well. I was very proud of them and returned really positive and satisfied. Thank you to Andrew Norton-Knight and Gerard Barklimore for their continued support, and to Brother Michael for his visit on Thursday – our main judging day. By Susan Earl

Two Big Days For Harness Racing The Forbes Diggers Harness Racing Club will be presenting two big race meetings on Anzac Day, 25th April and the TAB Carnival of Cups Market Day on 30th April. The club welcomed Braden Sullivan as its new president this year as Robert Parsons has stepped down from the role. Forbes Harness Racing has one of the youngest committee in NSW with Melissa Sullivan as treasurer and Emma Gaffney as secretary. Forbes has a strong team of harness racing trainers and drivers. The club is grateful for all the help the committee and volunteers put in to make events happen, as well as its sponsors. Forbes Services Memorial

Club is the major sponsors and has been for many years. The Forbes RSL sub-branch is a big supporter of the Anzac Day Race Meeting when a ceremony is held to commemorate Anzac Day and pay respects. One of the feature races on Good Friday will be the Neville Pellow Memorial race. The club will also be helping out at the Good Friday Camel Races this year and will be running their Calcutta. The TAB Day on 30th April will feature a market day. You can follow the club on Facebook, Forbes Diggers Harness Racing Club, with daily posts.

Cooler Weather Brings More Croquet Players The cooler weather is bringing members back to the courts in larger numbers raring to hone their strategies and hitting skills after a rather wet and hot start to the year. While most people get a laugh out of the antics on the courts, others bear the brunt of sneaky moves by the opposition resulting in challenging play and losses. Congratulations to John H Browne on winning three out of three games on 4th April’s golf croquet. He had assistance of partners Kath Broderick and Carol Slattery in two of the games. A great game playing two balls and defeating Kevin Rubie in the first game. Congratulations to Dorothea Croker and Colleen Leibich on winning all three games on 8th April’s Aussie croquet with the help of their partners, Joan Littlejohn, Dorelle Scott, Veva MacCullagh, Harley Stewart, Colleen Leibich and Tony Thompson. A great effort by all participants. Have a safe and happy long weekend and enjoy your Easter eggs. By Anne Stewart
