Jan Farewells The Forbes Show The Forbes Show is fast approaching and plenty of people are getting excited. Opening for the 11th and 12th of September, the Forbes Show is a must-do event which is reaching a milestone in its 140th year. There is one person who is looking forward to the 2015 Show with a mixture of elation and sadness. This will be Janell Facey’s seventh and final year as the Forbes Show Secretary and although it is the end of an era, Jan has no regrets. “When the Secretary position came up it really interested me,” Jan said. “I’ve honestly loved every minute of it!” “I’m very excited because I will finally get to share my grandson’s birthday. He is now four and I haven’t shared a birthday with him yet

because he was born on Show weekend.” This year promises to be the best Show yet with a huge range of attractions and fun events on the schedule. Entries for Miss Showgirl are still open and this year there are over $1000 worth of fantastic prizes up for grabs. From beef cattle to cage birds, machinery displays to tupperware, rides, show bags, show jumping, lolly ladies, harness racing, jousting tournaments and fireworks, there will be something for everyone to enjoy. Tickets can be purchased from the Show Office and families can buy sheets of $1 ride coupons for $25 with a value of $30 which can be used anywhere in Show Alley. By Rosi Broom

MAYORAL NOTES I have received some good news from the Minister for Health, Jillian Skinner, to confirm that the Pathology West laboratory and collection room will remain at Forbes Hospital and that there are plans to refurbish the collection room at a later date. In regards to car parking, that is still a wait-and-see operation at this stage as a decision won’t be made until all of the construction work is completed. A short video clip has been released providing an update on where construction is up to for Forbes and Parkes hospitals. This video can be viewed on YouTube by searching for Western NSW Local Health District and clicking on the Lachlan Health Service Project clip. You will see a number of local faces featured in the video. Unfortunately the Magpies First Grade side went down in a stellar performance against Westside in the semi-final at Dubbo last Saturday. It was such a close game and a heartbreaking loss for the Magpies who have done so well this season. The Magpies Reserve Grade and Under 18s now head to Dubbo’s Apex Oval tomorrow for their semi-finals. The reserves face Dubbo Westside while the under 18s are up against Dubbo CYMS. Good luck to both teams! On the subject of rugby league and our under 18s I would like to make mention of some lovely words that were said about our boys. During one of the season matches against Wellington a few weeks ago, our under 18s formed a guard of honour and cheered on the Westhaven team, who won the Gungie Origin

Cup for the second year in a row against Wellington. One of the staff members from The Westhaven Association said it brought a tear to her eye to see the display from the young men who play for Forbes. From what I was told, they were very inspiring and very thoughtful and conscious of the importance of the event. All of their parents should be very proud of their boys. On Tuesday, I attended the unveiling of the new-look Central West Local Land Services with our Local Member Andrew Gee officially opening the refurbishment. It is great that the Government made a $500,000 investment to complete a whole new office fit-out. It looks amazing and we are very happy to have this service in Forbes with its 21 staff members. You may have read the article in the Sunday Telegraph in relation to the sacking of 152 councils. This is not true and the Minister for Local Government, Paul Toole, will be waiting for the IPART report and that will form the basis of any Government decisions. Sometimes the papers get it right but as shown in this case, sometimes they get it awfully wrong. Tomorrow is the 61st Bedgerabong Show and there will be plenty to see and do including the dog show, animal nursery, billy boiling competition, cattle and sheep judging, horse events and lots more. Head out to Bedgerabong with the family for the best little show in the west! Have a great week, stay safe and God bless. Mayor, Cr. Phyllis Miller OAM

BreastScreen Back In Town The new mobile breast screening unit is continuing its tour of Forbes until Monday 28 September following 5 weeks in Parkes. The bus is part of BreastScreen NSW Greater Western’s initiative aiming to increase awareness and promote early detection of breast cancer. “It is vital for all women aged between 50 and 74 to have a mammogram every two years at a BreastScreen NSW clinic,” said Lachlan Health Service Manager Liz Mitchell. “It is a free service that only takes 20 minutes and it could save your life.” Liz said it is wonderful that women from Forbes can get a free mammogram locally without having to travel during this time, encouraging local women to make the most of the opportunity while the van is in Forbes. The BreastScreen van is one of 11 upgraded units in the state with the purpose of helping to support early detection for the one in eight women in NSW affected by breast cancer in their lifetime. “Early detection is the key to improving the

survival rate of breast cancer, and mammograms can detect cancers before they can be seen or felt,” Liz said. Enhancements in the new vehicles include things like upgraded digital mammography equipment, a secure wireless communication system, improved air-conditioning and wheelchair access. Lorraine Parker, a Councillor for Lachlan Health said the upgraded van is a great improvement because it uses the same technology and provides the same service as the BreastScreen service in Orange without the need to travel. “It is really important that women visit the van while it is in Forbes,” Lorraine said. The BreastScreen Mobile Unit will be stationed in Victoria Park behind the Cenotaph on Harold Street until Friday 28 September, when it will then travel to Tottenham, Tullamore, Trundle, Peak Hill, Narromine and Molong. Bookings can be made by phoning 13 20 50 or just stop by the van.

Donating Life If you know anyone who has needed an organ transplant or replacement tissue, you will recognise the importance of raising awareness to promote organ and tissue donation. There is never a better time than right now to have the conversation that could possible save somebody’s life. “Family discussion around donation decisions is vital,” says Donation Specialist Sonia Braithwaite. “The majority of families say that having discussed and knowing the donation decision of their loved one made it much easier to support donation proceeding if that is their wish.” Only around 1% of people die in hospital in the specific circumstances where organ donation is possible. However, many more people can become eye and tissue donors as tissues can be donated up to 24 hours after death regardless of where the death occurred. “While the possibility of organ donation is quite small, one organ and tissue donor can transform the lives of 10 or more people,” Ms Braithwaite said. People can register their decision on the Australian Organ Donor Registry. For more information visit www.donatelife.gov.au

Forbes Cricket Funding Cricketers in Forbes and across NSW will benefit this year from the renewal of a partnership between Cricket NSW and fast food giant McDonald’s. This partnership will see McDonald’s as the Major Community Partner of Cricket NSW during the 2015/2016 cricket season to support individuals reaching for their sporting dreams. “After an incredibly successful inaugural year, we are pleased to once again partner with Cricket NSW,” said Malcolm Harrison, licensee of McDonald’s in Forbes, Parkes and Cowra. “We value the development of important life skills such as teamwork and sportsmanship and we encourage locals from Forbes to sign up and get involved with their local cricket club.” “We hope our support of Cricket NSW will help to increase the number of Aussies batting, bowling and fielding for our national support.” Like last year, McDonald’s will be involved

with Cricket NSW on a number of levels including major sponsorship of Country Cricket and supporting recipients of the Cricket NSW Facility Grants program. Last season the program funded over $5.8 million worth of facility upgrades for grassroots cricket across the state. Some McDonald’s restaurants will engage with their respective local cricket clubs to host sign-up days and other events to encourage active participation in the sport. As part of the sponsorship, they will recognise a McDonald’s junior cricketer of the week from both metropolitan and regional NSW during the cricket season. “We are delighted to have McDonald’s on board for another season,” said Cricket NSW General Manager of Commercial Operations and Communications, Brett Richardson. “Both Cricket NSW and McDonald’s are passionate about getting kids active and we will promote our recruitment messages to get kids playing cricket this summer.”

HealthSmart Australian women aged 48-55 worry more about the short-term impact of menopause rather than the fact that hormonal changes can “silently” reduce their skeleton by up to 10% within five years. Consumer research has suggested that the leading menopause health concerns are hot flushes, followed by weight control, mood swings and night sweats. Awareness for the severity of potential bone loss is low with 64% of mid-life women surveyed having no idea that up to 10% of their skeleton could be lost following menopause.

According to Jean Hailes, a lack of awareness means that 91.2% of women between 51-70 years fail to meet their daily calcium requirements which rise sharply once they reach menopause and, unless they consume more calcium, their bone density can fall. International medical research indicates that about half of all women over the age of 50 years will experience at least one fracture due to osteoporosis. Dr Sonia Davison from Jean Hailes for Women’s Health said that menopause can significantly increase a woman’s risk of de-

veloping osteoporosis, as the drop in oestrogen levels that occurs during this time results in increased bone loss, making women more vulnerable to fractures. “We need all Australians to take preventative measures against osteoporosis or osteopenia which affects two in three Australians over the age of 50,” Dr Davison urged. “You are never too young or too old to act when it comes to protecting your bones. Phoenix Competition

Golf: A Range of Formats The Final of the Wallace Cup, a handicap match play comp, was contested between Daniel Bayley and Peter ‘Ecky’ Dawson. Daniel triumphed 3/2 after a very close contest. Congratulations to Daniel who has been a formidable opponent throughout, and a staunch supporter of the event. Saturday’s play was the ‘Righties vs Lefties’ contest, played under Stableford conditions with aggregate scores for each side of the contest deciding the winners. The field of 46 players was split as nature would have it, with 37 right-handers playing against 9 lefthanders. They were pleased to be contesting this after the ‘World Left-Handers Day’ was commemorated on the preceding Friday. The Lefties aggregate score was 303, somewhat behind the Righties aggregate score of 339. So once again the Righties prove that it is better to play on the left side of the ball, but ah no, it is better to play on the correct side of the ball. Among this comp there was a hidden Foursomes prize. Two cards were drawn at random from each of the Righties and Lefties groups. The aggregate score for each pair decided the winning foursome. In a real turnaround, the phantom Leftie pairing of Barry Shine and Bruce Carpenter (69) defeated the phantom Rightie pairing of Mick Spice and Brian Monaghan (66). Also on Saturday was the Stableford comp, contested in two grades. The A-grade winner was Paul Kay (41 points) ahead of runner-up Brian Everest (40). The B-grade winner was Frank Donohue (with 37) from Frank Hanns (36). The ball sweep went to 36, and included those above plus: 39 - Will Gordon, 38 - Ben Webb, 37 – Barry Shine, Ian Bown, 36 – Niel Duncan, Barry Parker, Doug Churchill. The NTP’s went to: 9th: Andrew Grieson, 18th: Adam Borger. Andrew got his ‘2’ but Adam missed out. There were four 2’s scored, all by right-handers, with the 3rd being most prolific. The classiest ‘2’ went to Ben Webb on the first – a pure strike and a pure putt. Sunday’s 18 hole Stableford Medley was contested by 20 players, including one visitor – John Zannes from Narrabri. Not only did the

sun eventually shine, but so did the golfing. The Winner was Ron Morris with 42 points, ahead of Phil Duke with 41 points. These last few weeks have shown that scores of over 40 points are needed to be among the prize winners. Ron kept his group entertained on the 11th green for a long time, and kept them all entertained throughout the game, especially after his birdie on the 14th. The NTP’s went to – 9th: B Carpenter, 18th: F Smith. Neither turned their good shots into a ‘2’, but Bruce got one on the 3rd and Fran got one on the 9th! There were four 2’s scored overall. The ball sweep went to 38 points, going to: 40 - Rob Webb, Rod Besgrove, Ron Spice, 38 – Ben Webb. Barb Drabsch did play this week, but somehow missed out. On Thursday 13 August, the Vets played a 12-hole event at Forbes. The cool breeze cut through a few swings but 29 players were pleased to be there. The winner was Peter Unwin (F) with 26, on count back from John Davies (P) on 26. The Bradman Award went to John Whatmore (F) who had one of those days we just do not want to talk about. At least the company was good. The NTP’s were: 9th – A Grade: Nil (they all missed!), B Grade: M Cartwright (F); 18th – A Grade: D Rodgers (P), B Grade: P Cripps (F). The ball sweep went to 22. The Mick Miller Shield was an embarrassment for Forbes, who lost on home soil with 134 to Parkes score of 142. Back to the drawing board guys! The next game is an 18-hole event at Forbes, on 20 August. It is the usual gathering at 9:30 am for a 10:00 am start. So, if you are reading this, you are late already. Special Notice The Lachlan Valley District Final for the NSW Men’s Fourball Championship will be played at Bogan Gate GC on Sunday 23 August. Representatives from Forbes are: F Hanns/ B Parker teeing off at 11 am from the 1st tee; P Maher/ M Cahill at 11:08 am from the 1st, and F Donohue/P Pymont at 11 am from the 6th. Good luck guys, and remember that

when putting on sand greens, do so with authority. Here are some items: The second event in the ‘Juniors on the Move’ programme, run by our very own Daniel Newton, was held at Parkes recently. A very enthusiastic group of 14 players attended, receiving individual coaching and participating in competitive events. It was another successful event, with new players mixing with the established ‘junior coaching junkies’. The next event is set for 6 September at Forbes, with another coaching workshop being targeted for the September School Holidays. Contact Daniel at the Pro Shop for more info. The organisation for the Forbes Nissan Classic, set for 14/15 November, is gathering momentum, with some new ideas being promoted. By Short Putt
