AMAZING… It was a beautiful autumn afternoon for the unveiling of the amazing sculpture by NSW Governor General on the stock route outside Forbes. The Governor General’s wife Linda (left) sang a beautiful song she specially wrote for the occasion. That Is Amazing!

In an amazing community effort the first artwork of the unique sculpture trail between Forbes and Condobolin was officially unveiled last week.

For more than 100 community members the spot where seven striking red letters contrast beautifully with the surrounding landscape on the stock route about 18km outside Forbes will always have a special place in their hearts.

Farmers, tradespeople, painters, builders, planners and many more took part in a massive effort to create a community sculpture for the Somewhere Down the Lachlan sculpture trail.

Standing in a paddock that was under half a metre of water not too long ago, NSW Governor General David Hurley said:

“I have been here in drought, in flood and in good times - I am not amazed we stand here today. The people of rural NSW are rock steady people with a desire to be different and sustain their way of life.”

Kim Muffet, a local farmer who managed the logistics, agreed that it was “an amazing response from the community” with a lot of pride in the project. “Today we have an artwork valued at about $170,000.”

For Rosie Johnston, creator and visionary of the bush version of Sculpture by the Sea, it was important that the first artwork on the trail was a “massive and monumental community sculpture. We wanted something that people would say ‘that’s amazing’ when they drive past.”

MAYORAL NOTES What a great Easter weekend. The Good Friday Camel Races were well attended and highly successful. The event is a great credit to Kerry Dunstan and Lee Marsh as well as all of the community groups involved in the day. On Easter Saturday the crowds gathered at Apex Park for a very successful Easter Festival run by Havannah House.

There were three-legged races, egg and spoon races and of course a giant Easter egg hunt. I know it was a very popular event because my grandchildren attended and they had a fantastic time.

Last Wednesday we held two public meetings for community members to find out more about the draft Our Forbes Shire Community Strategic Plan 2017-2027.

There were a number of people in attendance and I thank those residents who took the time to come along. The public exhibition period for the plan finished yesterday and it returns to the May Council meeting for final approval.

Yesterday was our April meeting and one of the items on the agenda was our Disability Inclusion Action Plan. This plan is now

Continued from page 1 She approached Ian Bartholomaeus of Midpro Engineering and he volunteered to design and build the first letter free of charge. Measuring 2.5m by 2.5m the letter a was exhibited in the art park and created a lot of interest in the project.

“It is a relief to see it all come together,” said Bart standing in the shadow of the giant letters. He cut out the other six letters and Kim co-ordinated six farmer groups around Forbes to help assemble the letters. This men’s shed-like effort meant all the letters could be completed and not just one with grant money received for the project.

“It was not too hard doing it,” said Robert Buckman, a farmer who helped to build the letter i on Tom Green’s farm. “It was good to be involved. I really like the finished product.”

While the letters were ready to be installed a year ago, the almost non-stop rain and subsequent floods made it impossible.

Dr Keith Mullett, President of the Forbes Arts Society said at least one sculpture per year would be added to the trail.

Visual arts program: A series of eight small workshops will run in the Central West, including Forbes from April to June.

Arts OutWest has set up the workshops, in close consultation with mental health and disability support services, on behalf of House with No Steps, who provided the funding. Each of the programs specifically targets particular groups. Some of the programs are for existing groups, while others are open to the public. The program in Forbes will be a visual arts workshop running over 10 weeks from May to June.

Sign-ups for the Forbes program will be announced soon.

Stevie Is Reaching For The Stars

Working in a male dominated industry is more of a motivator for a trail blazing Forbes businesswoman than a hindrance.

Stevie Morrison of H E Silos has been awarded an agriculture and farming scholarship by the Australia School of Applied Management.

“It looked like a great opportunity and I decided to apply for it,” said Stevie, who will be travelling to Brisbane next week for the first of three face-to-face full day sessions.

She will also be attending workshops and webinars over the next six months to complete six modules in management training.

The accelerated leadership program is designed for women in management positions or women aspiring to be in management.

For Stevie the bursary is also a golden opportunity to network with other women with similar aspirations.

“I want to develop my leadership and management capabilities,” she said. “In the male dominated industries of manufacturing and agriculture, it is often a problem to be taken seriously as a woman. I really hope to learn how to approach situations like this… and I want to become the Richard Branson of agriculture!”

According to Stevie her father, Steven Morrison, will always be her best role model. “I also find inspiration from people like

Richard Branson and Larry Page. Although they are not women, I admire them for their morals and skills.”

The Morrison family business made headlines late last year when H E Silos won the 2016 Business of the Year in Sydney. The prestigious award from the NSW Business Chamber recognized overall business excellence in the areas of growth, innovation, export, sustainability, employment practices and ethics.

Stevie and her father are passionate about innovation in grain storage, but also to ensure food security in Australia and the world.

Drainage Work Starts; Paytens Bridge Reopens

Drainage work commenced in Press Street on Wednesday and construction will be completed in four stages with the first stage from Press Street to the Forbes Pool entrance.

Stage two crosses the pool entrance, stage three will be to Lawler Street and stage four is replacing the drain to Webb Street.

Remedial drainage work has also been undertaken in Calarie Road, Alder, Belah, Dawson and Farnell Streets, Bogan Gate Road and Sam Street.

The recent downpour was an extreme event, close to the 1 in 50 year average recurrence interval, based on reported rainfall values. The rain event exceeded the capacity of the stormwater drainage pipe networks, which are designed for a 1 in 5 year average recurrence interval stormwater event.

Inspections have been undertaken on several of the stormwater drainage systems since the downpour and have highlighted areas where some upgrades are required.

These have been added to Council’s survey and design program for detailed investigation.

Council has also announced that Paytens Bridge, across the Lachlan River on Paytens Bridge Road west of Eugowra, has reopened to all traffic and pedestrians with a speed restriction of 10km/hour and width restriction of 3.1 meters.

Imagine You In The War Two Year 7 students of Red Bend Catholic College won the seventh annual ANZAC Day writing competition for the northern region.

Sam Airey (12) was the winner and Tyler Nicholson (13) received a highly commended in the competition run by Federal Member for Riverina, Michael McCormack.

Students had to write an original and imaginative short story of 250 words or a poem under the topic Anzac Day in the Riverina and Central West.

The 7.1 English class of Mrs Scott researched WWI and read extracts form the experiences of soldiers, nurses and Australian families affected by the war.

The 22 students had to write a story from their point of view of a school student whose parent is off serving at the warfront.

In Sam’s story he had to step into his dad’s shoes when he went off to the war to help with jobs around the house like cutting wood for the fire. “It was a little bit hard to imagine myself in that situation.”

He was very excited to have won – a first for Sam. “I was pretty excited and told all my family.”

Tyler wrote his story as entries into his diary telling how his dad left for WWI and how a few months later a day after his tenth

birthday they received the terrible news of his dad not returning.

“I found it a challenge to stick to the word limit,” said Tyler. He is excited about his first win and feels it has given him more confidence in his writing.

The two stories have been published in the ANZAC Day commemorative booklet with all the other winners’ entries.

FORBES HERITAGE 2017 The 2017 Forbes Heritage event has something for everyone with a five-day program planned from May 6 to 10.

Adults Shirk Fruit And Veggies Too Australia’s largest ever fruit and vegetable survey has found that four out of five Australian adults are not eating enough fruit and vegetables in order to meet the Australian Dietary Guidelines.

The Fruit, Vegetables and Diet Score Report released recently, found one in two (51 per cent) adults are not eating the recommended intake of fruit, while two out of three adults (66 per cent) are not eating enough vegetables.

The report, produced by the CSIRO and commissioned by Horticulture Innovation Australia, compiled the dietary habits of adults across Australia over an 18-month period.

With 145,975 participants nationwide, the survey was the largest of its kind ever conducted in Australia.

The overwhelming message is that most Australians are not as healthy as they think, and need to eat higher quantities and a greater variety of fruit and vegetables every day to meet the minimum Australian benchmark.

To help meet the benchmark, CSIRO suggests adults eat at least three serves of different vegetables every dinner time.

One of the key findings in the research is that a focus on variety could be the solution to boosting consumption.

People across Australia, in all occupations and weight ranges, were invited to participate in the online survey between May 2015 and October 2016.

Women reported slightly better fruit and vegetable consumption with 24 per cent

meeting both guidelines, compared with only 15 per cent of men surveyed.

When comparing the figures by occupation, construction workers and those in the science and programming sector recorded the poorest fruit and vegetable eating habits.

On the other hand, retirees and health industry workers were more likely to meet the recommended dietary guidelines.

I am writing on behalf of headspace to address growing concerns raised by schools, parents and young people across Australia about some content featured in US Netflix series 13 Reasons Why. The series – which debuted in Australia in late March and is currently streaming on Netflix - depicts a young woman who suicides. It presents the viewer with very confronting and graphic messaging and imagery inclusive of suicide method and means.

Since its debut both the national headspace School Support Program, which supports school communities in the aftermath of a suicide, and eheadspace, the national online and over-the-phone counselling service has received a growing number of calls and emails directly related to the program.

The show exposes viewers to risky suicide content and may lead to a distressing reaction by the viewer particularly if the audience is children and young people.

National and international research clearly indicates the very real impact and risk to harmful suicide exposure, leading to increased risk and possible suicide contagion.

Clinicians working for eheadspace have been dealing with a steady stream of concerned parents and young people since the show first aired.

There is a responsibility for broadcasters to know what they are showing and the impact that certain content can have on an audience – and on a young audience in particular. headspace School Support and eheadspace is urging school communities, parents, and mental health services to be aware of the dangers and risks associated for children and young people who have been exposed to this content.

The national suicide media initiative, Mindframe, also has significant concerns and warnings related to this content.

Is Knee Cracking OK? Many people experience a painless cracking, grating or popping sensation when bending the knee. The medical term for this is crepitus. A study by McCoy et al looked at 250 normal knees and found that 99% had patellofemoral crepitus. One must then ask; what causes joint crepitus and does it really matter?

Whilst knee crepitus is often a symptom of patellofemoral pain syndrome and osteoarthritis, no research to date has shown a causal link between the crepitation noise and actual joint pathology.

Most people experience one of four types of crepitus. The first occurs when a tendon snaps over a bone. It can be palpated and is often described as a hollow clunk.

The second occurs inside the joint when the two joint surfaces separate. A vacuum is created forming gas bubbles in the joint fluid. When these pop a loud crack is often heard. One study showed no signs of joint arthritis after years of habitual knuckle cracking.

The third cause is when patellofemoral movement is not smooth. This can cause a fine crunching noise and can be measured with vibration arthrography. Vibrations are decreased or lost in joints with osteoarthritis probably due to decreased joint lubrication.

The fourth occurs when joint fluid is pushed behind a slightly rough patella surface as the knee bends.

It is good to distinguish what type of cracking your knee makes. If it is not painful and falls into one of the above categories we should see crepitus not as a sign of joint pathology but as a sign that our joints are mobile and well lubricated.

TOPICALTrivia ANZAC BISCUITS Legend has it that Anzac biscuits were sent to soldiers on the frontline as they didn’t spoil. This myth is somewhat contested, with no written connection between the recipe and the name ANZAC appearing until the 1920s. Historians believe that these biscuits were sold at galas and fetes to support the war effort. Regardless of their origin, they have become a symbolic part of ANZAC day.

Ingredients: 1 cup of plain flour 1 cup of sugar 1 cup of rolled oats 1 cup of shredded coconut 125g butter 2 tablespoon of golden syrup 1 tablespoons of hot water 1 teaspoon of bicarb soda Combine the flour, sugar, oats and coconut in a bowl. Melt the butter and golden syrup. Mix 1 teaspoon of bicarbonate soda with a tablespoon of hot water and add to the butter mix. Pour it over the dry ingredients and mix well.

Drop spoons of the mixture onto the tray and flatten slightly, leaving room to expand.

Bake at 180 degrees Celsius for 10-15 minutes until golden. Allow to cool.

How long have you lived in Forbes and what do you like about living here? I was born in Forbes, moved away when I was 18 and returned three years ago. I like the weather extremes from very cold to very hot, and being able to do a radio show is a perk.

Where do you work and what do you enjoy most about your work? I work at 2LVR 97.9 Valley FM community radio. I love finding out about independent artists and interview them each week to find out what inspires them. I enjoy finding great Australian music and co-hosting the show.

What do you do to unwind after work and on weekends? I enjoy gaming – World of Warcraft is my favourite. I also enjoy binge watching TV series like Friends, Game of Thrones and House of Cards. Otherwise I will go to the gigs of musicians I’ve interviewed on my show.

What are you really good at? Asking the right questions to find out more about a person and to find that extra spark of who they are.

If you could have a super power, what would it be? Mental telepathy – it would be great to know what someone is really thinking, instead of the façade they might be putting up.

Electronic Conveyancing in NSW Electronic conveyancing of land (or E-conveyancing) has now started in NSW. E-conveyancing through the internet has two stages. Firstly it may involve the electronic exchange of contracts for sale of land, title searching and all the other searches that solicitors perform. This stage is not compulsory but should, once fully up and running, speed up the exchange of contracts - when contracts for sale of land become binding.

The second stage is the settlement of land, farm, house and commercial sales. This stage will become compulsory. As from 1st August 2018 all transfers of land will have to be done via E-conveyancing. All banks (including credit unions), solicitors and conveyancers will need to be registered with PEXA the internet engine that facilitates settlement of land sales. Once settlement figures and searches have been completed and settlement of a transfer is agreed and authorised with PEXA by banks, credit unions and solicitors, then PEXA registers the transfer, mortgage (or other documents) and pays out settlement funds almost immediately after settlement.

In a couple of years’ time, there will be no cheques and no paper title deeds. Monies will be sent electronically and title deeds will be a thing of the past. Title deeds to land will be held electronically by the Land, Property and Information Service on their computers. None of these make conveyancing any simpler - just a different method. It is also designed to get rid of paper, but they said that about fax machines and emails… and it didn’t!

Wookatook Takes Forbes Camel Cup

Six thousand spectators enjoyed the balmy weather and entertainment at the Forbes Camel Races on Good Friday.

Wookatook, owned by John Richardson of Yeppoon, stormed in to win the coveted cup. Wookatook was ridden by John’s son, Troy, who also won the Jaye Davie Family Memorial for most successful jockey of the day. Little Duke, trained by the Ainsbury family in South Australia, won the Plate and Outlaw Bobaluie, trained by Glenda Sutton from Victoria, won the consolation race.

A total of seven camel races were run with the first and second place winners of each race competing in the Forbes, Parkes and Young McDonalds Family Restaurants Cup. The third and fourth camels ran in the Stuart Brown Memorial Plate whilst those in fifth and sixth place ran in the consolation race.

Camels can run at 40 kilometres per hour for long periods of time, however, encouraged by their riders it is possible the winners in Forbes reached speeds of over 65 kilometres per hour!

Not only did the Forbes Camel Races provide the local community with something different to enjoy, local community and charity groups including Forbes Can Assist, Redbend Junior League, Forbes Harness Racing Club, Forbes Rotary Club, Forbes Jockey Club and Forbes Netball Association benefited from donations received as their volunteers rolled their sleeves up to assist with the event.

So why have many Forbes locals and visitors enjoyed camel races here for the past 16 years? Whilst attending the camel races on a family holiday in Blackall, Queensland in 2000, the late Graham Marsh was inspired to bring the camel races to Forbes as he thought it would be a novel and great family day out. Graham’s legacy lives on thanks to the two hard working coordinators of the Forbes Camel Cup his daughter Lee, and Kerry Dunston.

As you are probably aware, camel’s make a variety of moans, groans and deep, throaty bellows whether racing or at rest. But did you know one of these camel noises was used to voice the character Chewbacca in the Star Wars movies?

Golf In Great Weather

The Easter weekend was full of golf, played in great weather conditions.

Saturday’s Individual Stableford was won

by Rob Webb in the A-division. He scored 43 points in a roller-coaster ride. Runner-up was Ray Taylor with 42 points showing consistency throughout.

In the B-division, Paul Kay steadily improved to score 36 points. Runner-up was Troy Howe who had good and bad patches to score 35 points.

The ball sweep went to 36 points on count back, going to those above plus: 39 – D Bayley, K Herbert, T Griffiths, P Dawson, J Haley; 38 – N McMillan, M Haley; 37 – S Hailstone, S Uphill; 72 – K Sanderson.

The NTP’s went to: 9th – K Herbert; 18th – B Parker.

On Easter Friday the golfers played a Stableford Medley. A small field played well, with Martin Woods taking the honours on 40 points and Shane Sallaway runner-up on 35 points. There was no ball sweep, but NTP’s went to – 9th: D Churchill and 18th: S Sallaway.

Easter Sunday was also a Stableford Medley, won by Jill Cripps with 38 points.

Runner-up was Bruce Carpenter on 37 points on count back. The ball sweep went to 37, with R Morris and R Cross (Wyong) collecting a ball. NTP’s - 9th: Sue Cross; 18th: nobody.

Easter Monday had a Stableford Medley won by Dave Mylecharane on 42 points.

Runner-up Andrew Dukes scored 40 points, which included three birdies and an eagle to finish 1-under the card.

The NTP’s went to: 9th - P Dawson; 18th – B Drabsch. The ball sweep went to 35 points, going to those above plus: 38 – T West; 37 – P Dawson, G West, M Cahill; 36 – R Baker, B Everest; 35 – G Drane, M Browne.

Cracker Week Of Croquet

Remember to keep our course good by repairing pitch marks on the greens, filling in your divots and keeping your carts away from the greens. We want Forbes course to be at its best for the Open.

It’s been a cracker of a week with some excellent play by all members.

The clean sweep of the day on Tuesday with three games was John H Browne with a big following of players having two wins each. Bruce and Lorna Field, Mary Hodge, Veva MacCullagh, Bob Murray, Kevin Rubie, Ken and Marj Styles, Alec and Lorraine Todd, Barry White, Tony Thompson and Carol Slattery.

Easter Saturday turned up eight visitors who came along for the fun. Visiting winners were Lauren, Janet and Gil Candido and Rob Bradley, who won one game each. Alec Walters won two games while James Hunt was magnificent in winning a solo game against a very strong player, and playing two balls at once. Our clean sweeps on the day with three wins were, Kevin Rubie, Barry White and Lorraine Todd.

The club will celebrate World Croquet Day on Saturday, 6th May. The whole community is invited to have a taste of the game.
