As Australian citizens, we enjoy the rights of a free country: safety, opportunity and democracy. Anzac Day is our opportunity to commemorate the men, women and children who fought, endured, suffered and died for us, our country and all the privileges we enjoy daily.

On this commemorative day, we are reminded that it is important to remember the deeds and sacrifices given to us by the invincible, intangible Spirit of Anzac. The Spirit of Anzac as suggested by the official war historian C.E.W. Bean is “to have stood, and still stands, for reckless valour in a good cause, for enterprise, resourcefulness, fidelity, comradeship and endurance that will never own defeat”.

Masses of Forbes locals and visitors attended the 10am commemorative Anzac march and service on Tuesday. By the end,

it would be true to say we were all uncomfortable, if not soaking wet due to incessant rain. However, rather than subdue our reverence for the Anzac’s, it was evident we were thinking “this isn’t so bad, imagine how the Anzac’s must have felt whilst fighting for our freedom in Gallipoli”.

The Anzac march from the Forbes Services Memorial Club to the Cenotaph in Victoria Park brought many schools, community groups and ex-service personnel together to pay their respects, mourn with pride, and remember with equal pride, those that have served and still live. Also to give gratitude for the peace we enjoy, and acknowledge, the responsibility of ensuring the freedom and liberty so costly won is not lost by our own indifference.

MAYORAL NOTES On Tuesday we commemorated Anzac Day, which is our day to pay respects to those who made it possible for us to live the way we do today. Considering the inclement weather on the day, I congratulate those who came out in the rain to attend the services and participate in the march.

At last week’s Council meeting we approved a loan of $100,000 to the Forbes Men’s Shed. This loan will be repaid over a period of 20 years and will help build the new shed on Union Street.

Also at the Council meeting it was decided that expressions of interest would soon be called for community members to participate in our Section 355 Committees under the five Community Strategic Plan themes of Society and Places, Economic Development, Infrastructure, Environment and Leadership and Governance. We will let you know when expressions of interest are being called.

Part of the service included a multitude of Forbes community groups, businesses, families and individuals laying wreaths. Flowers have traditionally been laid on graves and memorials in memory of the dead. On Tuesday, rosemary, which symbolises remembrance, was favoured.

Jolene Jones, assistant manager of the Forbes Services Memorial Club read the Prayer of Thanksgiving, which thanks the nations of the world in seeking peace and happier relations with each other.

Alexander Boyton of Forbes Public School read the Prayer for the Queen, and Mayor Graeme Miller beseeched God to, “watch over all those serving in the armed forces and those that still suffer disabilities through sickness and injuries suffered in war (all conflicts)”.

John Schrader delivered the Commemoration of the Fallen, which thanks the Lord for “the brave and faithful dead who willingly laid down their lives on the battlefield of war,” for us all.

Glen White (Retired WO Class 2), who during his period of service from September 1987 to August 2014 was deployed to Malaysia, East Timor, Sinai, Egypt and Cambodia, made a commemorative address saying: “There is something very Australian about coming together as we have done today.” He also reminded us to, “keep bright the memory of the Anzac’s and the Anzac spirit,” because the “future generations need to remember.”

The Anzac spirit was epitomised in the deeds of Simpson with his donkey at Gallipoli that is comradeship, courage and sacrifice for others before self. Today that same spirit encompasses the laughter, pride and love of life that we all enjoy as citizens of the town we call home, Forbes.

The guest speaker at the Eugowra CWA April meeting was Garth England (middle). He is seen with Frances Anderson and Margaret Swift. Garth is a pilot volunteering his time and plane for Angel Flight to transport stable patients to chemotherapy and other treatments. Anyone who is medically and financially disadvantaged can be accepted, and passengers must be able to enter and exit a light plane without assistance and be able to sit up and communicate with the pilot. Angel Flight was established in 2003 in Brisbane by Bill Bristow AM.

Learner drivers: A free workshop for parents and supervisors of local learner drivers will be held at Red Bend Catholic College in Forbes on Wednesday, 10th May at 6pm. The two-hour workshop, Helping Learner Drivers Become Safer Drivers, will offer parents and supervisors handson advice on how to provide the most effective driving practice for learner drivers.

Forbes Shire Council’s Road Safety and Injury Prevention Officer, Melanie Suitor, will present the workshop.

“Parents and supervisors of learner drivers have a crucial role to play in making our roads safer,” said Melanie. “The workshop covers topics such as the new licence conditions for learner and P-plate drivers, how to use the Learner Driver Logbook, the benefits of on-road driving sessions and tips on supervising a learner driver. “Parents and supervisors who have attended this workshop in the past have found that it boosted their confidence, helped them better plan driving sessions and allowed them to share their experiences with other parents and supervisors,” Melanie said. Mock crash auditions: Auditions for amateur youth actors over 16 in the Forbes, Parkes and Lachlan Shire Council areas will be held on Thursday, 11th May at the Parkes Shire Council Chambers for this year’s mock crash demonstration. The demonstration is the cornerstone of the NOT A STATISTIC! Youth Driver Education Program.

“The auditions will give participants an overview of all aspects of the project. Youth actors will take part in both filmed and live ab-lib exercises,” said the Councils’ Road Safety and Injury Prevention Officer, Melanie Suitor. Local actor Krystle-Lee McMurray, who has been involved in the project for the last few years said: “This project is such a great experience. It’s a really interesting mix of acting in front of a camera as well as a live audience of over 500 year 10 students. The cast and crew are really friendly and professional. But most importantly we are trying to save lives - so even if we reach just one person - we have done our job.” Pre-registration for the auditions is essential. Jenny and Ken Sanderson: It is an extremely emotional day for both of us and one of utmost importance. Both our Mums and Dads were in the services. My Mum worked in the munitions factory whilst my Dad served in the Navy (Jenny).

Kelly Tildsley: To me it is a day to remember those amazing men and women who fought and served for our country. Without them we all wouldn’t live and be as we are today.

Alexander Boyton: My Pop was in the Vietnam War. I am so happy he made it back, however I am so sad for the soldiers who died in the war.

Safer Vehicle For Livestock Exchange The quad bike at the Central West Livestock Exchange has been replaced with a side by side vehicle (SSV) under the NSW Government’s Quad Bike Safety Improvement Program.

The Forbes Shire Council is advocating the importance of safety in agribusiness and decided on the SSV as it is designed for use in an agricultural environment. It is also fitted as standard with operator protective devices including roll over protection and three point seat belts.

Director Engineering and Technical Services John Zannes said it was extremely important that the team at the Central West Livestock Exchange had the SSV for use,

especially in the wake of more deaths and injuries from quad bike incidents in the past six months.

“The quad bike is used at the Central West Livestock Exchange on a regular basis and it is important that we have the safest option possible,” John said.

“Along with the replacement, those who will use the SSV have also undertaken a quad bike safety course and interacted with a SafeWork NSW Officer about quad bike safety.”

DISABILITY INCLUSION ACTION PLAN The draft Forbes Shire Council Disability Inclusion Action Plan is on public exhibition for community input. The plan demonstrates Council’s commitment to improving the facilities and services offered to disabled members of the community. The plan also identifies strategies and actions that will work towards these objectives. Community consultations were conducted at the end of 2016 and the draft strategies and actions have been developed as a result of these consultations. FORBES HERITAGE 2017 The 2017 Forbes Heritage event has something for everyone with a five-day program planned from May 6 to 10.

The first two events on Saturday, May 6 will be open days at the Forbes and District Historical Museum and the Forbes Family History Group.

On Sunday, May 7 there will be a Musical Mystery Mausoleum Meander with Rob Willis and on Monday, May 8 there will be the unveiling of interpretive panels at the Forbes Medical Centre with the stories of Dr Geoffrey Young together with father and son Doctors Henry and Jim Delohery showcased.

On Tuesday, May 9 the Forbes Heritage Trivia Night will be held at the Forbes Services Club, which is sure to be a fun-filled night with the focus on Forbes.

The final events on Wednesday, May 10 are a Heritage Workshop with Council’s Heritage Advisor Graham Hall and the Heritage Presentation Evening on that night at the Forbes Town Hall.

Forbes Public School Unite To Spell Harmony

Forbes Public school took the opportunity to celebrate Australia’s cultural diversity by joining in Harmony Day celebrations in March.

“The school was decorated with orange balloons and ribbons and students wore something orange for the day, as orange is the traditional colour chosen to represent harmony,” said coordinator Megan Hodge.

“Students participated in classroom activities, and joined with their buddy classes to complete a poster representing the Harmony Day message: Everyone Belongs.

Unfortunately due to wet weather, a whole school photo activity organised for the day was not possible to go ahead. However, Nathan Steele from Steele Technology was more than happy to return the follow-

ing week to produce a great aerial shot of all staff and students spelling out the word HARMONY. “The students were captivated by this unifying event!” said Megan. “We joined together for the morning, as we celebrated being us. It was a great experience that the students loved being part of. As the activity was not on Harmony Day, it was a great opportunity to talk to the students about everyone belonging every day, not just on Harmony Day,” said Megan.

Following the photo, all students sang an American/Indian song lead by Mrs Stitt. The song is about respecting the natural environment. “The song celebrates everyone living in harmony with everything that’s living in the world”.

Living and Lifestyle Tips To Survive Winter On A Budget After such a hot summer it is hard to imagine feeling cold again, but as the weather starts to change, you will start feeling the chill of winter.

Here are seven tips to keep you warm this winter, without blowing your budget on heating bills.

1. BE STRATEGIC ABOUT WINDOWS AND CURTAINS What time of day does the sun shine through your windows? When it does, open your curtains to soak up the heat.

Once the sun’s gone, close them up to keep out the winter chill.

2. BECOME AN EXPERT ON YOUR HEATER If you have heaters installed at your place, make sure they’re working correctly and that nothing is sitting in front of or on top of them. If you’re renting and the installed heaters aren’t working, remember that your landlord has a responsibility to make sure that they are.

You should also find out if you have a gas or electric heater and then check if you’re getting a good deal from your energy supplier. The Australian Energy Regulator has some great online tools to help you compare the prices of different energy offers.

If you plan on buying a heater, do some research.

5. STAY WARM WHILE YOU SIT You’re most likely to want to turn the heater up when you’re sitting still because your body temperature will naturally start to drop. Use a hot water bottle, blanket or beanie baby to prevent being tempted to turn the heater on while you’re lounging around.

6. COVER BARE FLOORS Place rugs and mats on top of any bare floors to stop chill from rising.

7. SHOP SMART FOR WINTER CLOTHES Don’t waste your budget – always read the labels when you shop for winter clothes.

Avoid cotton and look for polyester (especially polyester polar fleece), wool and things with down filling. Nylon is particularly good for windproof outer layers. There’s also no harm in getting some thermal underwear, for those extra chilly days.

School is back after the Easter holiday chocolate binge! Now that students are settling into term 2, many parents are looking for some healthy snacks for their lunchboxes. Here are a couple of fuss-free recipes that are low in sugar and high in nutrition – and nut-free - so they can be sent to school.

No-bake date slice. Blend 3 cups of dates with 3 cups of oats – adding a little hot water if it is too dry. Press the mix into a lined baking tray and sprinkle with coconut. Freeze for 2 hours before cutting into bars and wrapping. Oats are an excellent source of protein and iron, and this recipe has no added sugar, but plenty of sweetness.

No-blend bliss balls are another easy treat. Mix ½ cup of tahini with ¼ cup of honey and ½ teaspoon of vanilla extract in a bowl until well combined.

Add 1 tablespoon of cocoa and 1¼ cups of desiccated coconut and mix.

Shape into balls and leave to set in the fridge. Tahini is made from sesame seeds and is a great source of protein, iron and calcium. These balls are also gluten-free.

Sport Grant For Soccer The Forbes and District Soccer Club recevied funding under the Local Sport Grant Program. How long have you lived in Forbes and what do you like about living here? I moved back to Forbes seven years ago.

I am loving being closer to my family and the sense of community!

Where do you work and what do you enjoy most about your work? I am the Director of the Forbes Preschool. We have been in the new Preschool for exactly one year! Seeing the new Preschool come to fruition was by far one of the most exciting projects I have been part of. And I must say the people I work with every day and their willingness to change and make the Preschool the best place possible makes it all the more enjoyable. It is such a happy and fun place to be!

What do you do to unwind after work and on weekends? I do love to get out and about and socialise, to be part of the community. On a quieter weekend a walk around the lake, some gardening and a movie is great.

What are you really good at? I don’t know! Teaching kids through play, having fun and promoting a positive workplace.

If you could have a super power, what would it be? I had to think about this – there are so many! But if I could only have one it would be to teleport, no more long travelling.

What is your pet hate? Negativity.

Tell us about your best holiday ever. I love every holiday, especially a beach holiday – watching the kids catch waves is always a highlight! Most recently we went to Nelson’s Bay where we all had lots of fun paddle boarding, swimming, eating and drinking the days away.

Harness Racing Names Five Lifetime Members

Local golfers took out many prizes at the Lachlan Valley District Golf Association Championships and Pennants held in Forbes on Sunday.

Peter Dawson won the Moulder Cup with a score of 69, closely followed by John Betland on 70. Forbes also won the A division, B division and handicap pennants.

The field of 97 also came from Parkes, Grenfell, West Wyalong, Condobolin and Caragabal. Trundle, Bogan Gate and Peak Hill were unable to send players.

Other Forbes prize winners were: C division scratch champ to T Sharpe (82), with runner-up S French (89). Steve Uphill was runner-up in the B division scratch. Veterans handicap winner was A Rees (71), A grade handicap winner was D Mylecharane (71), A grade runner-up was A Dukes (72), B grade handicap winner was L O’Connor (71) from tunner-up P Barnes (74).

Justin Sutton from Parkes won the Champion of Current Champions with a par score of 72.

On Saturday a field of 33 pairs played the 4BBB Stableford Medley event for the prestigious Hawke Trophy.

The winners were Rod Besgrove and Barb Drabsch, scoring 47 points. Runners-up, on count back, were Lee Grierson and Craig Simmons.

The ball sweep went to 44 points on count back, going to those above plus: 36 – S French/ T Cogswell, Richard/ Fran Smith, K Sly/ C Jarvis, B Slack-Smith/ H Steel-Park;

45 – G Collitts/ K Sanderson, D Ridley/ G Johnston; 44 – T Morgan/ A McDonald.

The NTP’s went to: 9th – B Chandler; 18th – B Chandler. Some delightful chip-ins were Deb Tilley on the 13th (for a 4-pointer!) and Terry Griffiths on the 18th.

Players are reminded the proposed changes to rules do not take effect until 1st January 2019. Current rules are valid for all official competitions - no leaving the pin in while putting! Players will be penalised for using the rules incorrectly.

Despite the wet weather on Tuesday the Anzac Day Harness Race Meeting went ahead. This year we named five lifetime members: Bruce Chandler, Ross Hodges, Terry Hush, Barry Wright and Robert Parsons. They were presented with badges by Trevor Currey and Michael Walker from the Forbes RSL Sub-branch.

Each of the lifetime members have made an impact on harness racing in Forbes for decades. “It is people like them that keep the sport going in Forbes today.”

The Forbes Services Memorial Club (FSMC) presented a cheque of $5,000 to the club officials. FSMC is the backbone of harness racing in Forbes with continued support every year. We cannot thank them enough.

The Forbes Harness Racing committee did an amazing job to organise the meeting on Tuesday. Thank you to the sponsors for supporting the club and the volunteers who gave up their time.

The next race is the TAB Carnival of Cups Market Day Meeting on Sunday with the feature race the Forbes Services Memorial Club C0/C1 final. Gates will open at midday and there will be market stalls and a jumping castle for kids - a great day out for the whole family.

Double Podium For Spitwater Team Outlaw In Griffith

Easter was kind to the new Spitwater Team Outlaw in the third round of the Australian V8 Superboats championship under lights in Griffith with two drivers completing the hotly contested 400-class podium in what was a near perfect weekend for the team.

Joining team-leader Justin Roylance as the B driver in the #67 machine was former 350-Class champion Daniel James.

The two pushing each other all day as they worked their way up the leaderboard to be in the battle for a podium finish thanks to two impressive drives through the first two finals.

Justin was the early pace-setter for the team, while Daniel carefully worked his way forward through every session. The pair worked seamlessly through each run to improve the performance of the new JRE race engines built machine to put themselves on the podium ahead of the final run of the night.

In the end caution saw them run second and third, while Griffith rookie Paul Kelly from Queensland threw caution to the wind to take victory on what is widely regarded as the most unforgiving and treacherous circuit in the country.

“I couldn’t be more pleased with the result,” said a beaming Justin Roylance. “Our goal this weekend was to learn and keep the boat straight and we managed that perfectly. Personally I wanted to be able to learn from Daniel - who is arguably one of the best drivers in the country - and work to improve the performance of the boat.

This is only our second event with the new package, and the second event at a venue

where caution plays a big part in your approach because there’s little margin for error at Griffith. So in my mind we were big winners this weekend, and having Daniel join me on the podium was the icing on the cake!”

For Daniel, who has only made cameo appearances in the championship over recent seasons, a podium finish was a perfect end to what had been a faultless weekend. “It was great to be back behind the wheel again. I really enjoyed the experience, and to make the podium alongside Justin was a great result,” Daniel said.

“It was nice too to get a feel for the boat and help Justin improve the performance.

Data is great, but there’s no better way to get an understanding for what’s going on than during the racing itself. We learnt an awful lot and can go away and make a few more tweaks to the setup to extract even more performance.”

The next round at the end of May is at Cabarita on the Tweed Coast to a circuit they know well, according to Justin.

“That’s great because Keith was new - as was the boat - and Griffith was a circuit that we run on just once a year, so to go back to a venue where we compete regularly and have a good understanding, we feel confident we’ll be able to keep this competitive run alive!”

Netball News

The Forbes Netball Autumn night competitions for mixed and ladies teams will continue through term 2, with the finals played in June between the two top teams on the point score ladder in each division.

Players must all pay the annual registration to FNA and NNSW and also the $40 per player per team competition levy. Team representatives must update their team sheets.

The Forbes Netbal Association regional carnival will be held on Sunday, 7th May. Age divisions start from 11 years to open ladies, and entries must be sent to the carnival convenor, Marg Spackman.

Help will be needed in all areas for the day, including serving in the canteen and barbeque, putting up tents and setting up early Sunday morning and packing up at the end of the day.
