ISSUE 92

We’re Going On A Treasure Hunt It might be Forbes’ best kept secret, but tomorrow you can be let in on it when the Historical Museum has its open day - be adventurous and take the family on a treasure hunt! You will find a treasure cove of heritage gems that will enrich your life, you might discover something relevant to your family and you will definitely learn something new. Housed in the Osborne Hotel building of 1878 for the past 47 years, the most precious item in the Forbes Historical Museum is the Ivel tractor – one of only seven left in the world. It took about 700 volunteer hours to restore it, and tomorrow you can see it started up. If the recent Legend of Ben Hall movie turned you onto history, the museum’s award winning exhibit on this elusive bushranger will give you plenty more to explore. The original pendant worn by Ben is on display, as well as a coin believed to have been found on Ben Hall’s body when he was killed by the police. If the more serious work of the early explorers interest you, the surveyor’s chain of Sir Thomas Mitchell, Surveyor General of NSW from 1828 to 1855 shines light on a very different chapter of history.

LOVINGLY RESTORED… The fully restored 114-year-old Ivel 277 – the first machine that was able to replace horses and the first successful agricultural machine. You can see it started up at the Forbes Historical Museum Open Day at 1pm and 3pm.

Or you can propel yourself into the space age… and find a piece of space debris thought to be part of the cone of a large space rocket that fell on a property near Forbes. There are loads more treasures, so

come and step inside history and be amazed. For more visit the pictorial site with over 1,500 photos of early Forbes at www.pictorialforbes.org.au, the website at www.forbesmuseum.com.au or Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/forbesmuseum

It was a magnificent autumn day in Forbes on Sunday, not only because the weather was perfect but also more than 100 people walked for Motor Neurone Disease (MND). “They came from Forbes, Penrith, Ballarat and Coffs Harbour,” said Marcia Simmonds and Pat Duncan, organisers of the 5km walk around Lake Forbes. “We want to thank everyone who walked today. New Pound: Forbes Shire Council has resolved to move to the next stage of planning for a new pound to be built in Angus Street at Landrace Estate. Director Environmental Services and Planning Paul Bennett said Council had been saving to build a new pound for the past five years. “We have looked at a number of sites and with the Landrace Estate site been decided as the preferred option, we are in the process of developing the plans for the new pound.” Paul said it would be built in the next 12 months. “As with all public facilities Council needs to plan to upgrade or replace infrastructure as it reaches the end of its usable lifespan. The new pound will provide modern facilities for the operator making it a safer and more user friendly facility. What does the new library at Red Bend College mean to you?

Maddison Thomson: The library gives me a place to study with others. It will also assist me to take care of my own education and provide me with many resources to do so.

William Nixon: The library is a great place to study with others collectively. It is also the perfect environment to further my education as there is access to many different resources.

Peter Lindsay: I am a boarder so life is a little different for me to the day students as I am here after the school closes. I find going to the library after school is the best way to study as it is really quiet and there is no background noise. The library will help us all to do as well as we possibly can with the resources provided.

Federal Member for Riverina and Minister for Small Business, Michael McCormack (middle left) officially opened the Marcellin Library at Red Bend Catholic College on Monday. He was joined by Bishop Columba Macbeth-Green, College Principal Br Michael Flanagan, other officials from the Catholic Education Office, the Marist Brothers of Australia and invited guests at the special event.

Students Love To Study In New Library

“It’s lovely, so, lovely having a new, bright and airy library.” These were the words of Sue Pietsch, Teacher Librarian at Red Bend Catholic College (RBCC) on Monday. “The students love studying here and keep asking, do you like it too, Miss?” she said at the official opening of the Marcellin Library and Resource Centre by Federal Member for Riverina and Minister for Small Business, Michael McCormack. The new facility was made possible with $554,798 of funding from the Capital Grants Program. “I’m so pleased the Coalition Government has been able to make this important investment in Forbes for the benefit of the students as well as the whole school community,” said the Minister. The facility includes an outdoor meeting area for Year 12 students, rooms for both large and smaller senior classes, and space for photocopier, a printing room, as well as technological and traditional resources. The students are also thrilled that their original four comfy chairs have been in-

creased with a number of semi-circle seats perfect for informal learning or catch up sessions. “These new learning spaces take into account the latest in education research and will see students learn more effectively.” said Michael McCormack. “It was great to visit RBCC and see the new facilities first hand and learn from both students and staff about the significant value these facilities will have for their education.” The library has big windows that look out over the beautiful trees and lawns, and although it may house the latest in technology the library allows the students to enjoy the peace and beauty of the country as well. Bishop of Wilcannia-Forbes Diocese, Bishop Columba Macbeth-Green dedicated the facility to the education and wellbeing of the present and future students of RBCC, and to their growth in faith, hope and love. Consultation Key To Future Of Old Vintage Village Site Forbes Shire Council has commenced the process to purchase the 72-hectare site of the former Lachlan Vintage Village. It was resolved at Council’s March meeting that the Mayor and General Manager would negotiate a purchase price with the owner. “These negotiations were successful and at the April Council meeting, Council resolved to go ahead with the purchase.” Mayor Graeme Miller said. “The contracts have been drawn and it is hoped they would be close to exchanging very soon.” “Once the purchase is finalised, Council will consider the proposed uses prior to making a resolution. A master plan for the land will then be developed, which will include consultation with the Forbes community. This is a truly exciting opportunity for Forbes.” said the Mayor. “The large site will allow Council to consider drainage and stormwater solutions for the area.” he added. “The site also has a number of zones that can potentially lead to residential and tourism developments. There are no other opportunities for residential development in this area, therefore the purchase of this site is a huge step for more land to be made available for residential development.” The Mayor said the master plan would define the concept and maximise the potential

of the site. The Lachlan Vintage Village was established in the early 1970s on land bordering the Newell Highway that was originally goldfields. The village was a historically authentic recreation of the NSW gold mining and early farming era. It is recorded that during the 1990s there was a downturn in interest in Australian colonial history. Due to this, the Old Sydney Town, north of Sydney set out according to James Meehan’s map of Sydney in 1803, closed to the public in 2003, and the Lachlan Vintage Village closed in 2004. Mayor Graeme Miller considers the development of the Forbes Vintage Village site as a truly exciting opportunity for Forbes and said it would be done in consultation with the Forbes community.

The majority of drivers in the Parkes, Forbes and Lachlan Shire area are law abiding when it comes to wearing seatbelts and using mobile phones. The latest observations results indicate a combined 99.1% seatbelt wearing rate and a 0.8% mobile phone usage rate. The surveys are conducted bi-annually. Councils’ Road Safety and Injury Prevention Officer, Melanie Suitor, said survey staff conducted observations for an hour in the morning and an hour in the afternoon. According to Melanie the seatbelt wearing rate is higher than the state average of 98%. The best location was the Parkes Highway recording 100% compliance in the afternoon. The worst location was the Forbes Urban locatin with a 96% wearing rate in the afternoon with 14 people observed unrestrained. “While our seatbelt wearing rate is better than the state average, it is disappointing to report that 59 people were observed not wearing a seatbelt,” Melanie said. The combined mobile phone usage rate was 0.8%, with three survey locations recording 0%: Condobolin Highway, Parkes Urban and Parkes Highway. Forbes Urban was the worst location with a 4.2% usage rate as 13 people used a phone whilst driving.

How To Create A Better Financial Future

Are you happy with your current financial situation? Is your current financial situation so good there’s no room for improvement? If the answer to either question is ‘no’, then there are plans you can put into place that will provide a clear pathway to a better financial future. Deep down, you probably already know you could be making better use of your money, but if you’re like most people the problem is knowing what to do. Everywhere you look there are people trying to sell you products that will magically make more money for you. Here’s the thing… the best person to trust is YOU! DIY money management is the way to make sure that the decisions you make are in YOUR best interests. And the way to make better decisions is better information. As Benjamin Franklin once said: AN INVESTMENT IN KNOWLEDGE PAYS THE BEST INTEREST. When it comes to your money and your financial future, the wiser you are about money, the better financial decisions you’ll make. The higher your financial IQ, the wealthier you’ll be. The more wealth you can create, the more options you and your family will have. Therefore, make financial education your next investment. In the words of motivational speaker Jim Rohn, “Formal education will make you a living. Self-education will make you a fortune.” We know it’s hard to trust anyone when it comes to money, so find out how Wealth Train financial education is empowering people in regional NSW to make better financial decisions at our free information session: DATE: Tuesday, 23rd May 5.30pm to 6.30pm VENUE: Forbes Services Memorial Club BOOKINGS ESSENTIAL: Please call 0411 484 464 to reserve your place.

Parkes Musical & Dramatic Society PROUDLY PRESENTS

& SPORTS INJURIES CENTRE

Keeping you fit for life

Stress Fractures The stress fracture is a common overuse injury seen in athletes who participate in endurance and high load bearing activities. Stress fractures in the lower limb account for between 80 to 90% of all stress fractures, and in runners contributes to almost 16% of all injuries. During periods of relative inactivity, with osteoporosis or eating disorders, the density of bone decreases. If loads on the bone become repetitive or abnormally high, and the bone is not given enough rest to allow for adaptation, the rate of stress-induced microfractures in the bone exceeds the rate at which the bone can repair, and stress fractures develop. The typical complaint with stress fractures is of a gradual onset of pain. Initially there is just pain with activity that subsides with rest, but returns when the aggravating activity is resumed. Local tenderness and swelling is often found at the fracture site and pain is easily localised as opposed to shin splints, which produce a more diffuse pain. Treatment initially involves rest from the aggravating activity for approximately four to six weeks. It may also require bracing or the use of a cam boot. In some cases surgery may even be required. Return to sport should be gradual to allow time for adaptation within the bone. It is important that all biomechanical and nutritional causes be addressed to prevent recurrence. Cross training and participating in a variety of different sporting activities can help minimise the risk of stress fractures. It is important to remember if you recognise the symptoms early and treat them appropriately, you can return to sport at your normal playing level. “For the fitness of you” Linda Reilly

Forbes Auto Sports Club Back On Its Wheels

The Forbes Auto Sports Club (FASC) made a come back of note last weekend following a huge setback in April last year. The club was broken into and cleaned out, but a year of hard work and generous donations from the community brought them back to operating. The club’s re-opener was held over two days last weekend with a double header of flat track racing that might become an annual event. Riders came all the way from Brisbane and Melbourne, Broken Hill and Cobar, as well as a large contingent made the trek from Kurri Kurri club on the Central Coast. Peter Baker came all the way from Harrington Point on the Mid North Coast to commentate for the weekend that included a dinner and entertainment on Saturday night. Many people commented on how well the meet was run and how good the track was presented. The committee would like to thank everyone who has helped us get back up and running after the incident last year. Thank you to Central West Agricentre for your kind donation of a new rainwater tank and pump, Central West Drag Association for your most generous donation, and everyone else for your donations. Lots of local businesses jumped on board to help out with sponsorships, a vital part of

a club meeting. Thank you to all of you. If you would like to get involved, contact the club on their Facebook page or website. The next meeting will be held on 21st May for motorcross, with another one on 17th July. There will be a kickstart licencing day for children to get a licence or those who need to be endorsed on a bike on 2nd July, presented by Aaron Rankmore of Dubbo (see his website for details.) The coin that was found on Ben Hall’s body when killed by the police, also on display in the Ben Hall exhibition at the Forbes Historical Museum.

The Museum has many different displays showcasing life in the 19th and 20th centuries in Forbes. These are baby clothes and booties dating from the early 1900s.

Kitchen implements from days gone by on display in the original kitchen of the Osborne Hotel built in 1878.

What women wore on a night out in the previous century.

The days before electrical stoves and all cooking was done on an open fire.

The Forbes Historical Museum is located at 11 Cross Street and is open from 2 – 4pm daily. The Open Day tomorrow, which is part of Heritage Week 2017, is from 12 – 4pm. Entry by gold coin donation.

The Museum has an extensive Anzac Centenary exhibition focusing on how Forbes was affected by World War I and includes the history of all the residents killed in the war, as well as stories of locals. Members of the Forbes & District Historical Society worked on the exhibition for 18 months.

This portrait of a woman was taken from Ben Hall’s pocket by troopers after his shooting. It was at first believed to be one of his sisters, but other images of his wife Biddy suggest that it was a studio photograph of her. It is called an ambrotype, which was an early method of photography in which a positive image was fixed onto a chemically treated glass sheet. The original locket with the photo can be seen at the Forbes Historical Museum.
