KEEP LOOKING… Emma and James Gamble with Forbes Fire Station Captain, Brian Clarke at the open day on Saturday. Brian received the Australian Fire Service medal, a Queen’s medal, on Australia Day after 39 years of service.
Open Day Highlights Burning Issue
At the Forbes Fire Station’s annual open day last Saturday, local fire officers aimed to raise awareness and educate residents about the dangers of fires in the home, and how to prevent them. “We always hold the open day in May. It’s an opportune time coming into the winter months to remind people about the danger of fire,” said Station Captain Brian Clarke. While kids enjoyed their plastic fire fighter hats and exploring the big red engines, Brian and some of his crew members handed out wooden spoons etched with the phrase, “Keep looking when cooking”. They want to remind people not to walk away from the stove while preparing meals. “In the last six months, we’ve had four
calls to fires started because food was left cooking on the stove unattended. “A woman forgot she had tea on and decided to go to her daughter’s house at the other end of town. Luckily the neighbour heard the smoke alarm and called the fire brigade. Fortunately only the food, the saucepan and the top of the stove burnt, and it created a lot of smoke right through the unit.” Brian has a strong message for the community: “Don’t leave anything cooking on the stove unattended. Don’t put clothes next to heaters. And everyone should have at least two smoke alarms in working order in their house, if not more.” Continued on page 2

MAYORAL NOTES At last Thursday’s May Council meeting, the Our Community Strategic Plan 20172027 of the Forbes Shire was adopted. The supporting plans including the 2017/18 Operational Budget was planned to be on public exhibition, however some of our Councillors wanted some more information before it went on display. A briefing session was held on Monday to answer any remaining questions and a special meeting will be held this afternoon at 5pm to endorse the documents for public exhibition. Once endorsed, the plans will be available to view on our website www. forbes.nsw.gov.au or at Council’s Administration and Engineering Offices and the Forbes Library. Last weekend Councillors and executive staff attended a strategic planning workshop. This session was excellent and it gave us a chance to all work together on future plans for the Shire. When there is an incident, however, the Fire Brigade is quick to attend. “The Fire Brigade’s Act requires that response times are no longer than 10 minutes. The average time from call to response for the Forbes crew is seven minutes,” Brian said. The Station has a manned crew of 15 fire fighters. They all have other full-time jobs but are retained by Fire and Rescue NSW to cover the local community. Under the Brigades’ Act, four of those fire fighters must be available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to respond to local incidents. But sometimes, no matter how quickly they get there, there isn’t much they can do. “We had a house fire where the house was completely destroyed a few months ago. Someone left a newly renovated home with a candle burning on the bedside table. The window was open and the wind blew the curtain into the candle. They lost everything.” Brian has been involved with the local Fire Brigade for 39 years. Last month, he attended government house to receive the Australian Fire Service medal, a Queen’s medal, which was awarded to him on Australia Day. He described the award as “a great privilege”. Next year, the Fire Station will celebrate its 90th birthday. Built in 1928, it has recently been refurbished to give the fire fighters more room and better facilities. Up until October last year, the original fireman’s quarters upstairs were leased for private occupation. The top floor has been transformed and now offers a more comfortable working environment. The open day will be held again next May as one of many statewide events run under Fire and Rescue NSW.

QUESTION of the week Hair-razing effort! The extraordinary people who shaved or coloured their hair and their generous sponsors have raised almost $5 million in NSW in support of this year’s World’s Greatest Shave. The money raised for the Leukaemia Foundation will help to fund projects to provide safe and comfortable accommodation in the city for families living in regional NSW, and to offer free transport, counselling, information and practical support to the 60,000 Australians living with a blood cancer.
Local farmer Chris Sweeney.
Local Land Service (LLS) Election: Local farmer Chris Sweeney is standing in the LLS Election held this month. He is one of eight candidates seeking election for the Central West Local Land Services. The other candidates are Jenny Bradley, Don Schieb, Sharon Portelli, Alan Smith, Penny Heuston, Peta Tumpey and Will Martel. The election is held every three years and is an opportunity for ratepayers to elect a member of the board to represent them and their views on how the Local Land Services will be structured over the next few years. Enrolled rural ratepayers can vote online or via postal vote until 5pm on 31st May. Water Bills: Forbes Shire Council is reminding ratepayers that the latest water bills are for the period from the end of November to mid-March. This works out at an average of 108 days usage at $1.14 per kilolitre of water used. General Manager Danny Green said it was important to consider how many days were included rather than just comparing to the previous charge as the former period was for only 88 days. An increase of 11 cents per kilolitre of water used for 2016-2017 was also included.

Nomination: The #MonteFamous show on 2LVR Valley FM has been nominated in the 2017 Community Broadcasting Association of Australia Radio awards. James ‘Monte’ Irvine hosts #MonteFamous on Monday nights with a guest co-presenter, interviewing three independent or unsigned Australian musicians each week. Monte has interviewed 201 artists since the program’s inception, and has given a number of the artists their debut on the air waves. “Monte and his show are a great contribution to new and unsigned Australian artists who wouldn’t necessarily get interviewed or airplay on other radio stations,” said John Berger, President of 2LVR Valley FM.
Monte is passionate about giving independent artists a voice on his program on Monday nights.

School Scoop Andrew Brings Joy To St Laurence’s
The Student Representative Council of Forbes Public School
Forbes Public SRC Learn New Skills In Dubbo The Forbes and District Lions Club once again supported Forbes Public School’s Student Representative Council (SRC) with a generous donation. For the fourth consecutive year the Lions Club funded 19 students to attend a GRIP Leadership Conference in Dubbo. Last week St Laurence’s welcomed Andrew Chinn to our school community. Andrew is an Australian religious songwriter and singer and his songs have brought great joy to many with his music used in schools across Australia, New Zealand, USA and Canada. Principal Dafydd Thomas said: “The leadership workshops in Dubbo with 300 other students from across the region was extremely beneficial for the students. The day equipped them with a number of critical skills and approaches to an array of challenges student leaders can face. It was inspiring to see students rise to new attitudes and embrace new learning. Opportunities like this leave a lasting impact on students.”
Working With The Wider Community When designing the Forbes Preschool we also wanted it to be a place for our community, our friends from other towns, and a place to belong. We have been been one year in our new premises and we have so many partners we welcome into our service. The Girinya room (Girinya means play in Wiradjuri) welcomes all sorts of visitors each week: the early childhood nurses mother’s group, the Australian Breastfeeding Association (ABA) meet here, the Wiradjuri Language classes use the room, and an occupational therapist and a speech therapist assist with a school readiness program from the room. Other ways we have connected with the wider community have included being part of Food Revolution Week, and the Year 6 students from St Laurence’s came to visit last Friday to teach the children about the zones of regulation. New additions to the building include our chickens, who laid their first egg this week, a cover over our swing set and new resources added to the rooms. By Amy Shine

The Forbes North PSSA Netball team.
The Forbes North PSSA team versed Forbes Public School recently. We were rather nervous as most of our team are short and we felt a little overwhelmed. It was a close game, especially in the first and second quarters. At the end of the second quarter we were behind and realised it was time to try really hard and play together. At the end of the game we were ahead by 14 points. We were extremely happy to win the game and move to the next round in Dubbo. I am so proud of my team. I would like to thank Miss Ari Kenny, Miss McManus and Robyn Kenny for helping us prepare and taking us to our games. By Ruby Markwort

Record Funding For 53 Forbes Applicants Debutantes Dance Twenty-two community organisations in the grants mean for them. For CanAssist Forbes Shire have received record funding Forbes North Public School received from the last round of the Department of Social Security Volunteer Equipment Grants Program. A combined total of $102,400 has been awarded under the Federal Government program, which is aimed at supporting notfor-profit community groups to buy badly needed equipment to support their work. Applicants can apply for up to $5,000. On Tuesday, Forbes Shire Council hosted a free sausage sizzle for funding recipients, to celebrate the record milestone and acknowledge the hard work of community groups. More than 30 representatives from local organisations came along to enjoy some lunch and share stories about what the

$5,000, part of which will go towards air conditioning for the canteen. “The canteen runs five days a week and the lovely ladies in there need to be in a comfortable environment. It’s a work health and safety issue,” said Laurinda Ray. The Calarie Hall Committee also received $5,000. “You don’t know what it means for us,” said Ann Fisher. “We started out years ago making egg sandwiches to fundraise. This money will help us put heating and cooling in the hall, which will be better for people who want to use it.” The Men’s Shed, Valley FM Community Radio, Forbes Handicraft Centre, Northside Temple, the Toy Library, the Forbes Band, and the Forbes Historic Machinery Association were also among the grant recipients. Andrew Rawsthorne, Grants Officer at Forbes Council said 53 funding applications (council and community) were approved to a value of $3.2 million this financial year. Another $4 million is potentially coming our way with 38 other applications pending. Andrew is available to help local organisations with funding applications, and can be contacted at Council on 6850 2300. By Rochelle Bright

Elaine Bright How long have you lived in Forbes and what do you like about living here? I moved here 12 years ago and like the friendliness of the people and how our old buildings are being preserved and our picturesque lake. Where do you work and what do you enjoy most about your work? I am retired and find being involved in the Lions Club and CWA very rewarding. I am a volunteer at the Railway Information Centre and find that helping our visitors is also very rewarding. What do you do to unwind after work and during the weekend? Gardening and find weekend outings with the caravan club are very enjoyable. What are you really good at? Filling in time at the sewing machine or with the crochet hook and knitting needles. If you could have a super power, what would it be? Being a cancer survivor, I would love to have the power to find the ultimate cure for all people suffering this affliction. What is your pet hate? People who do ‘circle work’ on the lawns at Lions Park and think it is their right to damage community facilities in this way! Tell us about your best holiday ever? In November 2000 we left on a 12-month trip around Australia in our second hand caravan. We travelled approximately 45,000km. During this time we explored lots of nooks and crannies but left a lot unseen for the ‘next time’. We met wonderful people doing the same thing and made some lasting friendships. What a wonderful country we have and don’t feel the need to travel overseas again as we have everything we need and more right here in Australia!

FLANNERY’S Pharmacy Show Your Heart Some Love! Did you know that heart disease is the single leading cause of death in Australia? This means that on average, one Australian dies from heart disease every 26 minutes. Heart disease is associated with a number of factors including high cholesterol, high blood pressure and can lead to heart attacks, strokes and heart failure. Many of these signs are silent meaning there are no obvious symptoms. That is why it is important to have regular checkups with your pharmacist and GP. There are a number of simple measures that you can take to reduce your chance of suffering the complications of heart disease, such as: • Know your blood pressure (have it checked regularly at the pharmacy). • Exercise – as little as 30 minutes brisk walking, five times per week. • No smoking – smokers are six times more likely to suffer a heart attack than non-smokers. • Get tested for diabetes and keep it under control. • Know your cholesterol and triglyceride levels – ask your GP. • Eat lots of fruit and vegetables. • Maintain a healthy weight – the higher your BMI the higher your risk of heart disease. • So show your heart some love and don’t become a statistic! Help us to help you avoid heart disease and get to know ‘your numbers’. Call into Flannery’s Pharmacy or Life Pharmacy for a blood pressure check, a cardiovascular risk assessment, quit smoking assistance and weight loss support – all of which are free during the months of May and June.

Anna Mraz and Natalie Walker cooking up a pancake storm at the Forbes Food Revolution Day last Friday.
Friends And Fun Fuel The Food Revolution
Fruity faces, healthy pancakes and even kangaroo stew were available for the community to enjoy at the Forbes Food Revolution Day held last Friday at the Church in the Schoolyard. Most of the visitors were children from local schools who came to try different foods with their friends. They also got to dig their hands into buckets of compost with Netwaste’s Sue Clarke, and taste different kinds of olives as Marg Applebee from Landcare explained how they are grown. Between activities, the kids lined up for spray-on tattoos, courtesy of Neighbourhood Central volunteers. This is the fourth time organisers Lucy Pearce and Maree Yapp have run the annual event. “I believe in teaching kids from a very young age to make healthy choices,” said Lucy, who is the local Food Revolution Ambassador. Maree, from Schools as Community Centres (SaCC), is passionate about food secu-
rity and land care. “I’m interested in the whole cycle of food,” she said. “And between us, we’re trying to extend the message about eating healthy right through the year.” During May, Maree and Lucy also run Real Food Tasting sessions, which aim to encourage children between the ages of three and eight to try different fruits and vegetables. This year, they expect to reach over 800 local children. “We get so much feedback from parents about kids that have always refused to eat fruit or vegetables suddenly deciding that, because they’ve tried it at school with their friends, they eat fruit and vegetables now,” said Lucy. To find out more about Food Revolution or the Real Food Tasting program visit the Facebook page, contact Maree Yapp at SaCC on 6852 3008, or Lucy Pearce on 6851 5809.

Local Outlaw Chases Glory Up North
Forbes speed racer Justin Roylance and his team will compete in round four of the Australian V8 superboats championship in Tweed Heads this weekend. Justin will race a new boat, The Outlaw, with Michelle Hodge in the navigator’s seat. The Outlaw packs around 700 horsepower and can reach 120km/h in just under two seconds, so driver and navigator need to be reasonably fit, and safety gear is a priority. “It is certainly a rush. You’re pumping yourself up for a 45 second dash,” said Justin. “This weekend we race both days. Saturday is practice and qualifying, and Sunday is our big day.” For those interested in following the excitement, the races will be streamed live on the V8 Superboat page on Facebook.
