How To Make Your Business Shine

More than 30 business people attended the Forbes Business Chamber Boscars information and networking night at the Forbes Services Club last Wednesday. Jamie Coad represented Evolution Mining, the naming rights sponsor, while representatives from the gold sponsors, Forbes Services Memorial Club and Forbes Shire Council, were also present. Vicki Seccombe from the NSW Business Chamber shared a lot of useful information. Entries for the Boscars have opened and the closing date is Monday, 10th July. Start thinking about how your business can be involved and how to make your entry a key part of your marketing strategy. The Boscars can help you promote excellence in your business to customers, staff, suppliers and a wider audience, as well as an opportunity to acknowledge key staff.

Local finalists also go onto the NSW Western Regional Business Awards. Important points to remember are to sell your story and don’t be shy about your achievements. Also review each question, do not double up on answers, develop dot points to answer questions, make it easy for the judge to read, and get someone else to review your answers, grammar, stories and statistics. It might also help you to complete your answers offline in a word document, and only cut and paste your reviewed final product into the online system. Fiona Ferguson from the Chamber is available to answer questions. Contact her on 0418 447 139. Enter for the Boscars at www.forbesbusinesschamber. com.au/boscars/ By Cheryl Newsom

MAYORAL NOTES On Wednesday I attended the launch of the Central West and Orana Regional Plan in Parkes. We are very pleased that Forbes has now been recognised as a regional centre. When the draft plan was released we were not recognised. This is great news for our town and community. The General Manager and I are attending the National Congress of Local Government early next week. This is a very important conference as we will be brought up to date on Local Government trends Australia wide. Last Friday Minister for Tourism and Major Events Adam Marshall was in Forbes to announce $20,000 support from the NSW Government for the inaugural Grazing Down the Lachlan, which is on 23rd September. This is great news and recognises the work of the committee who have created the event. The third fountain has been installed in Lake Forbes between Wheogo Park and the Forbes Sports and Recreation Club. It looks fantastic and is a terrific backdrop for both of these locations.

Last week Forbes Shire and Parkes Shire councillors and executive staff got together for an evening meal in Parkes. It was a great way for all of us to discuss ideas and get to know each other better. We will reciprocate and host the dinner in Forbes next year.

THUMBS UP... THUMBS DOWN

THUMBS UP To the beautiful Red Bend debutantes and their partners who presented themselves at the Parkes Leagues Club recently. Much credit goes to their parents, teachers and all concerned for the best of occasions.

THUMBS UP To the warming winter sun, keeping us all in good spirits.

Our June Council meeting was held yesterday and I will update you all next week. Tonight is a Cambodian multicultural dinner and everyone is welcome to attend from 6pm at the Forbes Golf and Sportsman’s Club. Mayor Graeme Miller

Forbes’ own Colin Hodges has been awarded an Order of Australia Medal (OAM) in this year’s Queen’s birthday honours for service to the horse racing industry as a radio broadcaster. A local all his life, and a shearer until he turned 49, Colin has been calling races for 47 years. He is well known throughout the region but is perplexed by the award and the attention it brings with it. “Geez, all I did was get up and call out a few horses’ names,” he said with a chuckle. Growing up on a property in Bogan Gate, the first hint of his future in race calling appeared at school when he was nine years old, when he rounded up kids and had them trotting around a made-up track while he called the race. But it was the late Bobby Gunn who brought him into the business. “He got me in and had me practice with a tape recorder. At Gooloogong he gave me a call one day, and that’s when I started - in 1970 and I was about 20.” Now, Colin calls races right across regional NSW. He estimates he’s called the names of over 150,000 horses. He also spent 14 years calling races in a jungle in Vanuatu to support fundraising for disaster recovery. What has been most rewarding for him was the wonderful people he’s met, and their resilience when there have been hard times. “They were still willing and found the energy to organise their annual race meeting and bring the community together. “I feel privileged to have met all those people who have been so resilient and so generous with their time, and the people who train and ride the horses,” he said. SNIPPETS...

QUESTION of the week needed fixing to ensure the safety of the child, such as tightening straps, checking clips and replacing loose bolts. “It is important to have your child restraint checked regularly after prolonged use and installed correctly before use to ensure that your precious cargo is safe.”

Mayors from across Central West gathered in Parkes on Wednesday for the launch of the Central West and Orana Regional Plan, a blueprint for planning and development in our region. Pictured (L-R) are Rick Colless Parliamentary Secretary for Natural Resources, Graeme Miller Mayor of Forbes, Rex Wilson Mayor of Warren, Anthony Roberts NSW Minister for Planning and Housing, John Medcalf Mayor of Lachlan Shire, Barbara Newton Deputy Mayor of Parkes Shire and Garry White Chief Planner Department of Environment and Planning.

For the children: Forbes Shire Council is offering residents free child restraint checks next week. The inspection will be provided by RMS authorised child restraint fitters from 12 to 2pm on Wednesday, 21st June at Jelbart Dawson. Phone 6861 2364 to secure your place. Information about national child restraint laws, the types of restraints and advice on moving children from one restraint type to the next will be available. There will also be a free barbecue and a colouring-in competition for kids with a prize worth $50. Forbes Shire Council’s Road Safety and Injury Prevention Officer Melanie Suitor said the free child restraint checking day, held every year, was usually well patronised. “The correct fitting and adjustment of child restraints is vital. Research shows that two out of three child restraints are not being used properly and this puts children at risk in the event of a crash.” “Last year 80% of the child restraints inspected were found to be installed incorrectly. Most had minor problems that

Stickers: Forbes Neighbourhood Watch held a barbeque at Acheson’s Home Timber and Hardware for their big sale day recently. It was a fantastic day with Aaron Acheson and his staff going out of their way to help us. We also had our stickers on Domestic Violence and Watch out for your Neighbour for people who wanted them placed on their wheelie bins. If you are interested in a sticker, please call Lyn Ward on 0417 536 619. Gold Sponsor: The Forbes Services Memorial Club (FSMC) has granted $2,700 to become one of the Gold Sponsors for the upcoming Boscars, which this year are to be held at the Club on 15th September. President of the Club Wayne Richards presented the cheque to President of the Forbes Business Chamber Chris Roylance, at the Boscars information and networking night last Wednesday. FSMC joins Forbes Shire Council as a Gold Sponsor, and Evolution Mining as overall naming rights sponsor.

Do you think it’s still important to celebrate the Queen’s birthday?

Sisters Marlene Burton from Forbes and Joyce Nash from Eugowra: Joyce: Yes, of course it’s important. She deserves it. I’m amazed she can get to this age and do so well.

Geoff Suttie and Brian Collits Brian: Yes, it is. And I can tell you the story of driving my horse and sulky down the main street on the day of her coronation! Geoff: I don’t think about the Queen’s birthday until that time of year comes around. It was good to see Colin Hodges get the Order of Australia. He’s a good bloke.

Michael Rush and Jeremy Markwort: Michael: No. I don’t really see the point. What do the royals do for us as a country? Jeremy: It’s not as relevant as it used to be. And if they’re looking at changing Australia Day, why celebrate the Queen’s birthday? I think we should just combine them all into Anzac Day and have one celebration.

Ankle Sprains Lateral ligament sprains of the ankle are one of the most common sports injuries and because they are so common they are often managed too casually and many go untreated. From a clinical point of view the problem with a lateral ligament sprain of the ankle is that they have a very high incidence of recurrence. Gribble et al, 2016, Attenborough et al, 2015 and Tanen et al, 2014 (references can be supplied upon request), found 30-50% of the athletic population and 20% of the general population will go on to suffer from chronic ankle symptoms. These symptoms are often referred to as chronic ankle instability and include pain, swelling, laxity and instability. The contributing factors to the development of chronic ankle instability include; Not seeking medical attention for the primary lateral ankle sprain and return to sport when pain has decreased but function has not been fully restored. The absence of pain does not mean that you are ready to return to sport. Decreases in strength, range of movement, proprioception and balance need to be restored. Doherty et al, 2016 found that exercise therapy when performed in high doses (5 x 30 mins per week for 6 weeks) reduced the chances of recurrent lateral ligament sprains in the ankle by 42% and bracing/taping reduced the risk by 62%. It is currently recommended that you brace or tape your ankle for every game and training session for at least 6 weeks. The decision to return to sport after a lateral ligament sprain should be based on strength, balance and hop tests rather than time or absence of pain.

Major Funding Boost For Grazing Down The Lachlan The Minister for Tourism and Major Events was in Forbes last Friday with good news for the inaugural Grazing Down the Lachlan (GDTL) event. Adam Marshall announced the NSW Government’s 2017 Incubator Event Fund has awarded $20,000 to the food event that will showcase locally farmed and foraged native foods and indigenous culture in a picturesque location. GDTL has been established to support the Somewhere Down the Lachlan sculpture trail. Chair of the event Wendy Muffet was delighted with the news. “GDTL aims to excite and inspire from the moment our guests step onto the event bus, celebrating a fusion of the Wiradjuri and white settler cultures embedded in our glorious western landscape,” she said. “This grant enables us to truly elevate the guest experience, to add the sparkle in a sustainable way with all funds raised directed into a permanent sculpture trail strategically designed to increase the visitor economy in Forbes.” The Minister said attracting visitors to rural and regional NSW is a top priority for the NSW Government. “This fund will have a positive impact on local hotels, restaurants, shops and attractions, stimulating tourism across regional and rural NSW and creating more jobs. I congratulate the event organisers on their successful application, which will boost the regional NSW visitor economy,” he said. The 2017 Incubator Event Fund offers one-off annual grants of up to $20,000 to those staging an event for the first or second time to fund elements such as staging, venue hire, research, marketing and publicity activities. Grazing Down the Lachlan will be held in Forbes on 23rd September. More information is available on the Facebook page, or at www.grazingdownthelachlan.com

New Motor Accidents Statue The NSW Parliament has passed the Motor Accident Injuries Act, 2017 which changes and limits what claims maybe made on your green slip insurance policy. The new statue will commence on or about 1st December 2017 and will apply to motor vehicle accidents occurring after its commencement. The existing statue applies until then. People sustaining a personal injury as a result of a motor vehicle accident will now only have access to statutory benefits regardless of fault, unless they have been charged with or convicted of a serious driving offence. No common law damages will be recoverable for so called minor injuries and a new Disputes Resolution Service will be established. Serious injuries may still enable some common law claims but they are limited. The time for making and serving a claim will be reduced from six to three months, and if you are losing income and do not serve a claim within 28 days of the accident, you may lose your right to back claim lost wages. Statutory benefits for minor injuries and those at fault may cease after 26 weeks. In short, most claims benefits will be limited and green slip costs will no doubt increase the profitability of the insurers to the detriment of benefits. If you have a personal injury claim that is very complex, we can assist in this or any other legal problem. Please contact any of our Solicitors at Matthews Williams.

800 Local Kids Taste Real Food Getting kids to like fresh fruit and vegetables may sound like an impossible job for many parents, but the Forbes Food Revolution served up their 800th plate of the good stuff last Thursday. The Real Food Tasting program, run by food ambassador Lucy Pearce and Maree Yapp from Schools as Community Centres (SaCC), is for children aged three to eight years. Real Food Tasting is a lesson about healthy eating that invites children to try a plate of eight different fruit and vegies with their friends. “We try to include familiar and not-so-fa-

miliar fruit and vegies for the children,” said Lucy. “Every child is encouraged to at least try something new.” Lucy and Maree have visited every early childhood centre and primary school in Forbes. They have been thrilled by the response, with Kindy to Year 2 teachers embracing the opportunity to encourage children to taste test everything on their plate. Parents are excited by the program and the difference it has made to their children’s eating habits. “A mum thanked me for the work Forbes Food Revolution has done,” said Maree. “Her child would not eat fruit before and she was so excited the first time she could pack a banana in her child’s lunchbox! This is what makes us so excited about providing Real Food Tasting to our community”. Lucy and Maree are grateful to Woolworths Forbes, which donates fresh fruit and vegies to the program each year. This is the fourth year of the program, and children are starting to recognise the red Forbes Food Revolution shirts and plates of fruit and vegies. Though the program ended last week, Lucy and Maree are always thinking of new ideas. If you would like to be involved, contact Maree on 6852 3008. By Rochelle Bright

When Was Your Last HIV Check? NSW Health is encouraging people to have their HIV status checked with testing now easier and faster than ever before. Manager of HIV and Related Programs (HARP), Ann Ryan said around 10% of people with HIV in NSW may be unaware they have the virus, a statistic NSW Health hopes to change. “As well as risking their own health, people with undiagnosed HIV infection are at risk of passing the virus on to others without knowing,” Ann said. However, the statistics are improving. The number of HIV tests done in NSW continues to increase with over 500,000 tests conducted last year, a 7% increase on the number of tests in 2015. Nursing Unit Manager Dubbo Sexual Health, Margie Crowley said HIV testing was easier and faster than ever with a high quality, safe and innovative HIV testing service. To make testing for HIV easier, the NSW Government has launched the Dried Blood Spot HIV test – a free, easy, private and accurate way to test for HIV at home. “We need people in groups at risk of HIV to test regularly so they can receive early treatment and prevent transmission of HIV to others.” Most (82%) new HIV infections reported last year were in gay and homosexuallyactive men, with heterosexual people accounting for 15%. One third of people newly diagnosed with HIV were diagnosed with signs of late infection, which could have been avoided with earlier testing.

Margie said heterosexual people who may be in an at risk group should also be tested. “This includes people from African and Asian countries, and/or those who have had previous sexual partners from one of these countries. Anyone who has had unprotected sex should also be tested.” “All pregnant women should be tested irrespective of risk, as treatment during pregnancy is very effective in preventing infection from mother to child.” People can request HIV testing at their GP or at their local sexual health service: Dubbo Sexual Health at 203 Brisbane Street, contact number 6841 2489 or Orange Sexual Health at 96 Kite Street on 6392 8600. Information on Dry Blood Spot self-sampling test at https://www.hivtest.health.nsw. gov.au/. In survival mode you have to build with limited resourses and blocks, while mobs will kill you and you have to survive through the night. There are also online servers where you can play mini games and fractions, which are fun for the whole family. What I like the most about the game is what other people do with Minecraft. For instance you can have a building competition, and if you have two people on your team, imagine what you could build and how awesome it could be. I hope you have as much fun playing Minecraft as I do! By Adam Barnard (9)

OUR Bloke Ian Bartholomaeus How long have you lived in Forbes and what do you like about living here? Originally from Adelaide, I moved to Forbes in 1980. Being the “Centre of the Universe” why would you bother to live anywhere else? Great people and there’s not much we go without in this great community. Life is what you desire wherever you choose to live. Where do you work and what do you enjoy most about your work? I’m the Managing Director of Midpro Engineering. I love my place in the business doing engineering designing and 3D solid modelling using Solidworks (CAD) as well as general business affairs, which select few really get to experience. What do you do to unwind after work and on weekends? I love to cook, which is quite dissimilar to my occupation, and also it takes a lot of beer and wine to put together a masterchef creation! It winds me down after a long hard-working week. What are you really good at? Everyone would probably say annoying people but I reckon I’m just good at being happy.

If you could have a super power, what would it be? First thing I thought of is mind reading, but I think mystery is sometimes intriguing so I’d have to say being invisible. What is your pet hate? People doing 50 in a 100 zone, and that equates to anything in life. What was your best holiday ever? I’ve forgotten what a holiday feels like, but I love the coast and one of my favourite locations would have to be Noosa.

Successful Dragonboat Season The Forbes Dragonboat Club had a very successful and busy season with regional and state championship representation and some outstanding performances by club members competing at several regattas. The Mulwala challenge with a team paddle of over 20km was described by several members as an event not to be missed The club coach Carmen Stephens has been an outstanding find this year. Her ability to train and coach the team in all the required technique and skill is great. The club is very grateful for the sweeps Neil Stephens, Kathryn Sweeney and Bill

Thomas. Without these accredited sweeps the club would be unable to operate. It’s also good to see Michael Green and Chris Favell having a go at sweeping. The club’s annual general meeting is on 6th July at 6:30pm at the Forbes Sports & Recreation club. If you are interested in dragon boating and would like to come and try, go to Facebook or the website. Serious training will resume in August in preparation for the next season’s regattas and the Kalari–Lachlan River Arts Festival in September. By Chris Sweeney
