Bushrangers Plant Away At Wetland

Last Saturday was a perfect morning for a keen group of 17 Forbes Landcare Bushrangers to begin planting at Gum Swamp. People of all ages gave up their time to contribute to the Painted Snipe Project that aims to improve habitat at the swamp just outside town. “It was great to have such a fantastic turnout of keen locals for the first planting at Gum Swamp,” said Marg Applebee, coordinator for Central West Lachlan Landcare (CWLL). “We talked about some of the weed problems that this project will be addressing and then had a chance to plant macrophytes that are better suited to the upper bank’s drier conditions.”

The project focuses on the Painted Snipe, an endangered migratory water bird. “The work here will provide benefits to a wide variety of bird life through improved habitat and with the reduction of weeds, particularly Noogoora Burr,” said Marg. “We will be holding a follow-up planting when the water level is reduced further. Everyone was keen to be involved in the next session, so that is really encouraging,” said Margot Jolly, chairperson of CWLL. The group finished off with a well-earned morning tea and some interesting discussion about Gum Swamp. Continued on page 4

MAYORAL NOTES Earlier this week the General Manager and I attended the Australian Local Government Association National General Assembly of Local Government in Canberra. The theme of the event was Building Tomorrow’s Communities and a range of topics were discussed including infrastructure, economic growth and improving service delivery through information technology. There was a presentation from the Sunshine Coast Council about their Smart City Centre at Maroochydore and their automated waste collection system and smart lighting. Last Thursday was our June Council meeting and we presented the Scores on Doors certificates to a number of our food outlets. This year we had 57 businesses participate in the program and 30 were awarded five stars, which is an excellent result and shows the high standards of our food outlets, including school canteens and daycare kitchens. The Fire and Emergency Services Levy (FESL) meant to commence 1st July has been deferred by the NSW Government. The FESL will continue to be collected via

QUESTION of the week livered by assistant principal PBL Michelle Ashworth. And it seems that it’s working! With an outstanding result of 241 students being eligible for the schools State of Origin excursion, positive behaviour learning is definitely making an impact.

Britney Dukes won a competition to design a new logo for the Forbes Domestic & Family Violence Committee. She is with Forbes High School Principal Charles Dwyer.

New Logo: The Forbes Domestic Violence committee recently updated its name to Forbes Domestic & Family Violence Committee (FDFVC) to coincide with the launch of a brand new logo designed by Forbes High School student Britney Dukes. She won the competition ran as part of the Industrial Technology Multimedia course for graphic design. FDFVC, a not-for-profit group, relies heavily on donations from local businesses to organise the annual White Ribbon Day March on 25th November, and coordinate the Love Bites program for 14 to 18 year olds. FDFVC is open to anyone and welcomes new members. Meetings are held on the second Wednesday of the month at 9.30am at Yoorana, 40-70 Church street. Contact Renee Ellison on 6850 1234 or find Forbes Domestic & Family Violence Committee on Facebook. Outstanding Result: Forbes High School is a registered Positive Behaviour Learning (PBL) school. Visit www.bathurstwinterfestival.com.au for more information. #Montefamousreview: Tania Kernaghan All Australian Girl Tania Kernaghan’s latest album All Australian Girl is a great country romp. Beautifully produced and lovingly presented, Tania sings her tributes to the Australian outback, her family and the Australian way of life. It is Tania’s seventh album and it is an album that is positive, happy and uplifting and will make you feel good. I am not a big fan of the country genre, however this is one album I had no problems listening to on repeat. Tania’s singing is effortless and seductive. It is the perfect album for any afternoon adventure.

What are your best tips for recycling?

Dulcie Lavers: I recycle my clothes and remake things to change the way they look, or re-use buttons. You can also use old margarine containers to keep portions of soup in the freezer, or re-use birthday cards and make bookmarks out of them.

Sharney Sentence: I re-use plastic cups from little steam puddings and put other things in them.

Bev Chandler: I saw some old shoes that had been spray-painted, filled and covered, and made into pin cushions.

Club’s Charity Raffle A Win For Local Community

Three local community organisations have received a total of $8,168 in the latest round of the Community Chest Raffle program run by the Forbes Services Memorial Club. The Raffle program was set up by the Board of Directors and Club CEO David Fitzgerald in November 2015 as a way of giving back to the community. The club donates prizes for the raffle, and tickets are sold at the club on Wednesday and Friday nights. Since the start of the program, a total of $48,140 has been gifted to 18 local community groups to help them run their respective organisations and support their work in the community. “We haven’t repeated a group yet,” said Club CEO David Fitzgerald. “It has grown beyond our expectations. “The Club is the conduit, making it possible for local people to support their community groups. It makes me proud,” David said. The latest three recipients are the Forbes Men’s Shed, Forbes Rodeo Inc and Forbes

Eisteddfod, who received their Community Chest Raffle funds at a presentation last Friday. The Men’s Shed received $2,830. President Norm Haley welcomed the funds. “This money will go towards furnishings and equipment for the new shed. We chase donations where we can, but it’s nice to have a bit of extra money to help us out,” he said. Forbes Rodeo Inc. received $2,738, which will go towards the fund for a home ground in Forbes. “We might also be able to buy a rope dummy to take to our demonstrations at schools and fetes,” said Troy Read. Jan Facey accepted $2,600 for Forbes Eisteddfod. The money will help them run their annual event. If you are part of a community group and would like to be involved in the program, contact David Fitzgerald at the Club. By Rochelle Bright

Darrin Kopp and Anne Reade contributed to the Painted Snipe Project at Gum Swamp.

Trevor’s Tunes Touch The Heart There’s nothing like hearing an old favourite song to put a smile on your face and make you want to tap your toes. For Trevor Wren, playing music that makes people smile and feel good is one of his greatest joys. At a Neighbourhood Central social lunch on Tuesday, Trevor entertained a packed audience in the function room at the Vandenberg Hotel. Singing a wide repertoire of old songs, and playing his piano, he filled the room with smiles and memories while the members enjoyed a delicious meal. Trevor discovered he could pick out a tune at age 10 when he visited an aunt and uncle who had a piano. At 13, he had three lessons, but decided he’d rather play football.

He later taught himself to read music and play piano. For the past 28 years, Trevor has volunteered his musical talents across Parkes and Forbes. He was also involved for a few years with the Parkes Music and Drama Society. He loves the positive affect music can have on people. “I enjoy seeing the look on some of the older people’s faces when they hear a song they know,” he said. Trevor plays regularly for Neighbourhood Central events. By Rochelle Bright

Sharing Culture And Community Over A Meal

The exotic spices and light, fresh flavours of traditional Cambodian foods were available for all to enjoy last Friday night at this year’s first multicultural event. Forbes Council hosted the event, which was held at the Golf and Sportsman’s Hotel, and included a cooking lesson, dinner and entertainment. Locals from all backgrounds and cultures came along to enjoy the dinner. Guests were encouraged to bring a plate of food to share, to add to the Cambodian meals prepared by Nin McKenzie and Navy Yem. While guests watched, Nin and Navy shared the secrets to putting together two fragrant and delicious chicken dishes, which were later enjoyed with steamed rice, spring rolls, pastries and other treats brought by guests. During dinner, the function room was abuzz with the sound of conversation and laughter and the sharing of stories. As they finished eating, kids of all ages left the tables to play with new friends, while their parents enjoyed relaxing over a meal they neither had to prepare or clean up after! After the meal, eleven-year-old Hannah Dun-Cayo treated the audience to some music. She sang three songs, including a solid rendition of the Amy Winehouse tune,

Valerie. Blake Nicholson, Council’s Community Relations Officer, said the event aimed to contribute to an inclusive and welcoming Forbes shire, bringing together residents from all cultures to help make everyone feel welcomed and included. “We’re extremely happy with the success of last Friday’s dinner, and we’d like to make it a regular event. At this stage we are thinking once a quarter,” he said. Any local groups or individuals who would like to be involved can contact Blake on 6850 2355 or via blake.nicholson@forbes. nsw.gov.au By Rochelle Bright

Not Your Average Showgirl Local women between the ages of 18 and 24 who make a difference in the community are being encouraged to get involved in the annual The Land Sydney Royal Showgirl competition. The 2017 Forbes Showgirl committee had its first meeting last week. They have three entrants so far and are looking for more. The committee includes Susan Earl, Kathy Sweeney, and former Bedegerabong Showgirl, Casey Mcquire, who won the local title in 2013. Susan Earl has returned as an organiser of the local competition after a seven-year break, prior to which she managed the event for 13 years. “It’s a great way for young women to meet like-minded new friends, and get out of their comfort zone,” she said. “Contestants are judged on general knowledge and knowledge of their local community, personality, life goals, speaking skills, personal grooming and presentation. “The experience helps to improve interview skills, looks good on a resume, and is a great way to build confidence. There are also some beautiful prizes,” she said. For more information about the Forbes Showgirl competition, contact Casey Mcquire at casey.maguire@wf.catholic.edu.au, or Susan Earl on 0428445531 or via dsearlx@bigpond.com

Young

From Sheep To Gold To Cherries Situated just over an hour from Forbes, the Young region is probably best known for its National Cherry Festival in December. The undulating countryside, fresh produce and fascinating pioneering history are some other reasons to visit. James White ventured into the area in 1826 and settled at Burrangong Station. The site where Young now stands consisted of a well sheltered valley with good water. It was here that White built sheep yards and a shepherds’ hut. The area was reserved for lambing ewes, and was given the name of Lambing Flat. The beautiful valley remained as such for 34 years until 1860 when White’s nephew Dennis Regan and Alexander ‘the Yankee’ found gold at the spot in the creek at the rear of the current Lambing Flat Folk Museum. Within 12 months some 20,000 miners were busy extracting the precious metal from the earth. Cherry trees appear to have first been planted in Young in 1847 at the home orchard of Edward Taylor. In 1878, the first commercial cherry orchard was planted by Croatian migrant Nikola Jasprica (often known by anglicised form of his name Nicolas Jasprizza). Using some of the original stock from Taylor’s Kentish varieties, Jasprica conducted grafting experiments to produce a suitable variety. He had arrived in Lambing Flat in search of gold but after six months started a gar-

den and later an orchard. By 1893 he had 100 acres under cherries with 7,000 fullgrown and 300 young trees and 60 acres under vines. Today Young is known as the Cherry Capital of Australia, and boasts many other stone fruit orchards. It was during Jasprica’s life time that Young became the first town in the southern hemisphere to install electricity into homes of the township. Young is also acknowledged as the first township to institute a rural school bus system in New South Wales. Young is now considered to be one of the fastest growing towns in regional NSW.

How long have you lived in Forbes and what do you like about living here? I grew up in Forbes, but I’m originally from Condo. We moved away to Griffith for a few years and been back here in Forbes for about eight years. I love living in Forbes because it’s home, it’s a nice little town. Where do you work and what do you enjoy most about your work? I work at Binaal Billa Family Violence Prevention Legal Service and I’m a Community Support Worker. In my line of work, it has its ups and downs, it can be challenging, stressful and also rewarding. What do you do to unwind after work and on weekends? When I come home from work I don’t get the chance to unwind until later, then I’ll get ready for Home & Away, or my daughter will put a movie on and we’ll watch it together. I love spending time with my family and friends, doing something or just chillin’. What are you really good at? I’m deadly at a lot of things! Nah, I’m good at art, dancing and just being my deadly self. If you could have a super power, what would it be? A healing power. So I can help people to heal within themselves from pain and trauma.

FLANNERY’S Pharmacy

New Podiatry Services For Forbes Flannery’s Pharmacy is happy to announce a new podiatry service available at the pharmacy. Adam Debenham, who is originally from Forbes, and Bill Devanney will be visiting Flannery’s Pharmacy commencing 19th July to provide easy access to podiatry services for Forbes residents. Our feet do an amazing job getting us from A to B throughout our lives and endure a lot of punishment in between. Often this punishment can leave us with small deformities, callous, corns or difficulty to manage nails that impact greatly on our day to day lives. Doctors Choice Podiatry can offer a multitude of solutions to many of these disabling problems. Biomechanical abnormalities can also cause issues with our gait, which can lead to pain and injury. Not all abnormalities require treatment with orthotics. Following a thorough assessment, Doctors Choice Podiatry can offer appropriate therapies ranging from simple stretching or strengthening exercises right through to prescribing custom-made orthotics. Unfortunately, diabetes can have a major impact on our feet, especially circulation and sensation. Doctors Choice Podiatry can provide specialised nail care, corn and callous debridement, padding, offloading, along with vascular and neurological assessments. “Flannery’s Pharmacy is very happy to be able to provide a podiatry service to the local community in one of the brand new consult rooms,” said Business Manager, Debbie Prior. If you would like an appointment or more information please contact Flannery’s Pharmacy on 6852 1111 or call into the store.

There’s No Ducking April’s Chickens

Sausage King again – Shannon Bermingham of Forbes Central Butchery.

Hot And Spicy Snags A Winner He’s done it again! Local butcher Shannon Bermingham’s hot and spicy sausages took out the top prize in the continental category at the regional Sausage King competition last week. Shannon, well known to locals, also placed third in the continental category with German bratwurst, and third in the Traditional Australian Beef category with his Aussie beef snags. Shannon has been a butcher for 23 years. “The Sausage King competition is great for small business to showcase our produce. We are very proud of our success in the event over the past several years,” he said. The judges described Shannon’s hot and spicy sausages as having great taste and appearance. The good news is that they are available at Forbes Central Butchery for people to buy and try themselves! Drop in and see Shannon and his team between 7.30am and 5pm Monday to Friday.

Eight-year old April Bermingham has been making an impact at competitions across the Central West with her prize-winning chickens and ducks. She has already won more awards than her Sausage King dad, Shannon, and has no plans to stop. April shows Polish, Modern Game, Silkie and Ancona chickens, as well as Mallard, Crested and Indian Runner ducks. This year she has attended four shows so far, winning 10 first prizes at Dubbo and Yeoval, seven first prizes at Wellington, and four at Orange. She also received prizes for a champion chicken and champion duck at Wellington and Yeoval, and won a number of second and third prizes at all four events. April says that her favourite thing about showing the birds is having fun and spending time with the chickens and ducks. Her favourites are a rooster called Rocky, and a duck called Waddles.
