IMAGE: Paige and Jake Ellison are an inspiration who are making their musical dreams a reality.
Musical Youth Breakthrough Forbes siblings Jake and Paige Ellison have a lot to be excited about with the upcoming release of the debut album from their band, House of Tribes. Due to be released on October 2, the fulllength album is called “Paint it Red” after one of the tracks. “We thought it was one of the best songs on the album, so we named the album after it,” said Jake. “We’ve been at it for nine months, recording here and there and now we’ve finally sent away to get the CDs.” While the brother-sister duo are both big fans of music, their tastes and influences are poles apart – Paige likes indie/folk music and Jake likes heavy rock – which lends originality to their sound. The band formed almost 3 years ago when Paige wanted to perform with her brother at
the River Arts Festival. Since then, House of Tribes has been getting gigs across the region including Forbes, Young, Orange, Grenfell and Condobolin. As underage teenagers, they have found it an interesting experience performing at licensed venues. “We have had to tell the police so we have permission to be there,” said Jake. “It’s pretty crazy being a 17 year old and having all these drunk people coming up to you.” “We want to give a big thanks to our dad, Tim Ellison for helping with gigs and photos.” The official album launch will be an allages event so head over to Forbes Services Memorial Club to support local talent and youth culture. LETTERS to the Editor To the Editor, I’m writing to express my sincere thanks and gratitude to the NSW community for their tremendous support of The Smith Family’s 2015 Winter Appeal. The Smith Family, a national children’s charity, launched its Winter Appeal on May 20 to raise $3.5 million by June 30, for the ongoing support of thousands of disadvantaged children across the country. This year’s Appeal highlighted the vulnerability experienced by the 1 in 10 Australian children living in disadvantage, especially when they are at school and struggling to fit in and keep up with their classmates. Our Appeal brought attention to the isolating effects of disadvantage on children, and the fact that they often start school behind, slip further and further back and are at risk of being in poverty in the long-term. It is heartening that this message struck a chord with so many people in the community, who responded with great generosity to The Smith Family, ensuring we exceeded our Winter Appeal target and raised more than $3.7 million for disadvantaged children. I would like to thank each and every individual who made a donation, and let them know that their help will have a direct, lasting impact on more than 9,000 disadvantaged children in Australia, helping them to succeed at school and create a better future for themselves. Yours Sincerely, Steve Macready, General Manager The Smith Family, New South Wales
MAYORAL NOTES Last Thursday was our August Council meeting and during our afternoon break I presented certificates to a number of our eateries for receiving an excellent (five stars) in the Scores on Doors program, which is a result of hygiene and food safety inspections. It was a really proud moment for me to present these certificates as I was the inaugural chair of the Food Regulation Forum under the NSW Food Authority, and we put the Scores on Doors program together. To have 22 food retailers receiving excellent is really pleasing. On Tuesday I had the pleasure of attending the 100th anniversary celebrations of Walkers Ag n Vet Services. It is families like the Walkers who are so important to our town and it is wonderful that the business has carried on to its third generation of Walker family members. The business now operates in over 60 rural towns across the country and has more than 350 staff members. Walkers also make significant contributions to the Forbes community and have assisted community and sporting groups in many ways, most of which go under the radar. On Tuesday, September 1 our annual mayor and deputy mayor elections will be held at 5.30pm at the Council Chambers. Have a great week, stay safe and God bless.

Forbes Riverside Community Garden is open 9am to 11am Monday to Saturday and is the place to go if you want to join the garden or become a ‘friend’, make a donation to support the community garden or learn more about community gardening. Located within the former State Forest Nursery at Reymond Street Forbes, all green thumbs are invited to check it out!

School on Tour. To cap off Education week, Creative and Performing Arts students from Forbes High School travelled to both Forbes and Forbes North Public Schools to display dance, drama, and musical items. It was a great opportunity for our students to showcase their skills, and for our primary schools to see what they can do when they themselves attend high school. The performances were all engaging, encouraging the primary students to sing along, clap their hands, and even get up on stage! Nominations are open to recognise rural women in the 2016 Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation Rural Women’s Awards. The awards provide financial assistance to the recipients, allowing them to further their contributions to primary industries and rural communities. Women committed to making a difference to the community are encouraged to apply. Applications can be found online at www.rirdc. gov.au/rural-women’s-award and nominations close Saturday 31 October. In Italy a group of elderly women from a village in the north have raised enough money from donations to crowd fund their first ever trip to the sea. Did you know you have a better chance of getting a good night’s sleep on a Wednesday night? A study by users of the app Sleep Cycle revealted that 58% of people say they sleep more soundly on a Wednesday night. Perhaps by mid-week we are flagging and are in need of shut-eye. In terms of sleep quality, China and Slovakia do the best.
Relay for Life Expo Night was a success with team captains and participants alike turning up to collect team shirts, fundraising tips and chat with the Volunteer Organising Committee. The next Team Expo Night will be on Wednesday 16 September at Forbes Services Memorial Club from 6-7pm. The special early bird rate of $15 to register has been extended to 16 September. Essential Energy is reminding green thumbs to be aware of overhead power lines and other electrical equipment when working in the garden. If you do accidentally contact power lines, contact Essential Energy immediately on 13 20 80. If you are planning a garden or landscaping project, it is important to consider the types of plants you are placing around electrical infrastructure. Stay at least 8 metres away from fallen power lines or anything touching them and treat them as live. We have a winner! Congratulations to Elvy Quirk who is the winner of our Winter Soup Competition thanks to her delicious recipe for Cauliflower, Leek and Potato Soup. Elvy wins a $50 voucher for Mezzanine.

BBQ Champs
IMAGE: Allan and Pam Toole, Maria Peterson, Marj Cosgrove, Bruce Adams and Stephen Cosgrove at the Bunnings BBQ in August.
Taking Care Of Business August has been a busy month for Neighbourhood Watch with volunteers heading out to Bunnings for an Information Morning and BBQ. It was a fun morning for the group and Pam Toole’s fruit slice proved to be quite popular with the crowd. “A public thank you is extended to Allan and Pam Toole, Stephen and Marj Cosgrove, Bruce Adams, Anita Morrison, Dorothea Croker and Maria Peterson for their time, efforts and donations. A thankyou also to Bunnings in Forbes for the use of their equipment.” The last Neighbourhood Watch meeting saw the welcoming of two new members, Stephen and Marj Cosgrove who were both welcomed by the group. Forbes Neighbourhood Watch is a non-profit scheme that relies entirely on volunteers working together. Their aim is to minimise preventable crime, improve security and report criminal activities. The Forbes Branch continues to grow with more volunteers responding to the call for
Area and Street Co-ordinators and more sponsors offering assistance. Individuals and groups that volunteer can attend meetings for feedback and updates and may be able to answer questions regarding any problems in the neighbourhood. The more areas that are covered, the less each volunteer has to do! Even if you only want to look after a single street, that still makes a difference to the community. Forbes Neighbourhood Watch always welcome ideas and suggestions from the general public as to how the two entities can work together to help make the community a safer one. There are no joining fees attached to being a member either. Do you have an idea or issue to put forward? If yes then you are invited to get involved in their next monthly meeting which will be held on Friday 7 September from 7:30pm at Forbes Memorial Services Club. A Neighbourhood Watch Information and Display Tent will be on offer at the Forbes Show from 11-12 September.
The National BBQ Championships are coming up and the Forbes BBQ Society have recently announced that Better Homes & Gardens chef Ed Halmagyi has been secured for the event. “The BBQ Championships are about bringing people together, having a bit of fun and putting Forbes on the map,” said NBC Committee President Chris Roylance, applauding the committee’s hard work in the effort to provide extra value at the event and more to see and do for both competitors and spectators. The 2015 BBQ Championships will offer everything you would associate with the traditional Aussie BBQ including tasting plates, cheese and wine sampling. There are four categories of meat to be judged such as chicken, beef, pork and lamb. This year the National BBQ Championships have teamed up with Relay for Life so both events will be held at the same venue. “It just works,” said Chris. “Two major events coming together provides the community and the region with the opportunity to come together to celebrate, raise funds for a good cause and just have a really good time.” Both events will be held at South Circle Forbes on Saturday 17 October and both committees are encouraging everyone in the community to come along and get involved.

Reflections From Mayor Miller In February, Cr Phyllis Miller OAM was elected Mayor after the sad passing of former Mayor Cr Ron Penny. In the lead up to the annual Mayor and Deputy Mayor elections, Mayor Miller sat down with the Phoenix to reflect on her time at the Council. “It has been a very busy seven months with a lot to familiarise myself with,” said Mayor Miller, “but I am very pleased with what I and Council have achieved in this time.” “I have been working on tidying up our comprehensive LEP. This has been time consuming and is still underway.” Another big issue was ensuring the maintenance of all services when the hospital is reopened. “I had a meeting with the Minister for Health Jillian Skinner to reaffirm that and I received good news from her to confirm the Pathology West laboratory and collection room will stay,” said the Mayor. “During my time as Mayor we also presented our Fit for the Future proposal, which took a lot of time to put together. We had a number of public meetings on our Fit for the Future proposal and they were very well attended. It was heartening to see how many
people are interested in the future of Forbes Shire Council.” “Now it is a waiting game for IPART to assess and the Baird Government to make a decision on whether we are a stand-alone Council or whether we face amalgamation.” “Law and order was another big issue whilst in the chair as we had a spate of break-ins and crime in our community. We hosted a very successful public meeting and I was also very pleased to see that the Police Minister Troy Grant and NSW Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione thought it was important enough to visit Forbes in July.” There have been many challenges to face too. “As you know, we needed to replace Councillor Ron Penny’s position after his sad passing so we investigated all of our options on how to run the by-election.” “We made the decision to run our own byelection with Alan McCormack as Returning Officer. Thanks to the hard work of Alan and Council staff, the by-election was held and Councillor Grant Clifton received the absolute majority of votes. Cr Clifton has brought a fresh set of eyes and ideas, which has been very beneficial to Council.” Much has been achieved in the past seven
months since Mayor Miller has been in the chair. “At the end of July we hosted a networking evening at the Forbes Services Club to liaise with local accommodation providers, food outlets, businesses and taxi operators to be proactive in our approach when major events such as the Kalari Lachlan River Arts Festival, Vanfest and the Parkes Elvis Festival are on.” “I am really excited about the events we have coming up and being proactive rather than reactive is what we are trying to achieve. The outcome of the networking evening has been very positive so far as we want to make sure the opportunities that are available for our town reach their full potential. This will not only bring economic value to our town but also enhance our visitors’ stay while in Forbes. “ “I will be re-standing and I really hope I get the opportunity to continue as Mayor for another 12 months to provide stability and represent the community of Forbes.” The annual Mayor and Deputy Mayor elections will be held during a special meeting of Council at 5.30pm on Tuesday at the Council Chambers in Harold Street. Forbes High Students Win Again The Forbes High School NAIDOC Debating Team have won the Western title for the second year in a row after successfully debating against Cowra High School in the final held in Dubbo on Monday 17 August. The Forbes team consisted of 4 students; two who are Aboriginal and two who are nonAboriginal. Year 10 students Madison Collits, Nic Mulligan and Jessy-lea Byrnes as well as Whitney Duffy from Year 7 had to debate the topic “that all sacred lands should be handed back to their traditional owners”. As per this particular competition, students needed to prepare a case for both agreeing and opposing the statement, and then had the opportunity to present both cases at the event in Dubbo. They first debated Lithgow High School using their affirmative case, announcing that they had moved onto the final against Cowra High School who the team had previously beaten at the Lachlan level of the competition. In the final, the students debated the negative case and ultimately convinced the adjudicators and the audience that their case was the strongest.
IMAGE: The Forbes High School NAIDOC Debating Team have won the Western title for the second year running.
A special mention was made to Whitney Duffy of Year 7 who scored the highest and was announced as speaker of the day by the adjudicator. This is a fantastic outcome for Whitney considering she was up against Year 12 students. The team and teachers also thanked Paige Thomas from Year 8 who helped the team to win at the Lachlan level and wrote one of the speeches. The Forbes students will now progress to
the state finals to be held at Sydney Parliament House in November where they will defend their title as 2014 State Champions. While in Sydney the students will enjoy a cruise around Sydney Harbour and have dinner on Cockatoo Island. “This is quite an excellent reward for their hard work in reaching the State level of the competition,” Anita Morrison from Forbes High School said. Rachael Morgan How long have you lived in Forbes? Moved to Forbes in 2004 from Queensland, originally from Tarcutta. What do you love most about living in Forbes? I have the best lifestyle here, a great job and my favourite man! What are your hobbies/passions? It goes without saying - horses; riding, breeding and training them. If you won the lotto, how would you spend it? Pay off my mortgage, buy a beef property, invest a little. Describe your dream holiday: Probably too old to trek in South America or India now, so checking out America would be fun I think. Who inspires you the most? Anyone that is fair, true and determined to do good in our world. Where is your favourite place in the world? On horseback in the bush! What is the biggest change you would like to see in the world? Don’t start me on that one - I couldn’t choose just one. In a nutshell I’d say ‘stopping all injustice’ as it covers thousands of systemic problems in the world.

RUGBY LEAGUE
The Magpies are set to host the penultimate round of Group 11 this Sunday following surprise losses by their Reserve and Under 18s team in Dubbo last weekend. Magpies Reserve grade team was rolled by a fiercely competitive Westside team whose win of 32-12 secured them a place in the 2015 Grand Final. It was a shock loss for the Minor Premiers and one which they will take lessons from as they head towards the deciding round this weekend. The Under 18s team also had a tough day on the field with only 14 men able to attend due to commitments and injury. The Magpies were valiant in defeat going down to CYMS 22-14. Both teams have vowed that this week will be a different story and they are planning to demonstrate the same quality of football that got both teams to their first position on the ladder. The Magpies are inviting all supporters to get out to Spooner Oval this Sunday from 11am. Support your local rugby league teams as they defend their position. In League Tag this weekend the Nyngan Tigers will take on the Parkes Spacemen. Games commence at 11am.
SOCCER
In 1st Division, Forbes Gunns beat Royal Roos 4-0. The Gunns won the minor premier-
ship for 1st Division and this weekend they have a bye. The Forbes All Stars lost to Rawson Home Raptors with a score of 4-0. The All Stars will play Lighting FC in one of the elimination games on Sunday in Forbes at 2pm. In the 2nd Division the Forbes Bushrangers had the bye and came third in the regular competition. The Bushrangers play against the Cambridge Saints, who are second in the comp, this Sunday in Parkes at 12pm.
GOLF
Three Forbes pairs ventured to Bogan Gate on Sunday 23 August to play the Lachlan Valley District Final for the NSW Men’s Fourball Championship. Teams from Forbes, Parkes, Condobolin, Grenfell, Peak Hill, Bogan Gate and Lake Cargelligo were entered into the par event. The weather was not inviting and after allowing the proceedings to start, it had a quick change, drenching everybody during the first 9 holes before it settled down again. Undaunted by nasty weather conditions and playing on some very unfamiliar surfaces, a Forbes pairing rose above the fairway puddles and the oil slick on the sand greens to record a runaway win. Phil Maher and Marty Cahill finished the day with a score of +7 which was well ahead of the runners-up Taylor/Beasley who played in the same group and finished with a score of +3.
Not available for existing members, or with any other offer. Expires 30th September. To enter simply fill out this form and drop it into our Forbes office at Mezzanine, our Canowindra office at 65 Gaskill Street or enter via our website www.forbesphoenix. com.au or Facebook page.
Winner drawn Monday 31st August Name: Address: Email: Phone:
The dull conditions on the day could not dampen an emphatic display by the Forbes pair. Phil Maher provided a solid base from which Marty Cahill launched awe-inspiring shots to carry them atop the mountain. The other Forbes players had mixed results; Frank Hanns and Barry Parker finished in third place on +2 while Paul Pymont and Frank Donohue are still out there somewhere! The winners will now go on to participate in the State Final which will be held at Bonneville near Coffs Harbour.
RUGBY UNION
The Forbes Platypi 2015 season came to an end on the weekend in their final round against Cowra Eagles. The Forbes First Grade team lost with a score of 47-14, the Second Grade team lost to the Eagles 68-10 and the Colts side also had a disappointing afternoon, losing 55-5. The Platypi will be back in 2016 fighting strong for the top spots.
