Boorowa Hospital Celebrates 20 Years

The Boorowa Hospital has seen its fair share of ups and downs over the years, but this Saturday, the new Boorowa Hospital will celebrate it’s 20th birthday. Boorowa has had a public hospital since 1903, however in early 1996, an electrical fault caused a fire to break out, destroying the hospital. At the time the hospital’s insurance and government funding covered the reconstruction of the hospital building as well as essential hospital equipment, however the Boorowa Hospital Auxiliary was required to fundraise to replace other equipment, such as tables and chairs. Current Boorowa Hospital Auxiliary President Judy McGuiness was part of the Auxiliary at the time the original hospital burned down, and said it was essential the Auxiliary did what it did to get new equipment for the hospital.

“We fundraised through holding weekly cake stalls and doing outside catering, but we were also assisted by some members of the Harden Hospital Auxiliary, who at the time formed a separate group called ‘Friends of Boorowa Hospital’,” she said. “They held a fashion parade and raised some money for us. We had other donations from the community come through as well.” Mrs McGuiness said she greatly looked forward to celebrating the new hospitals’ 20th birthday at the Boorowa Ex-Services Club on Saturday night. A champagne and canapé evening is being held, with sports memorabilia to be auctioned off as a fundraiser for the Boorowa Hospital Auxiliary. By Joshua Matic

FROM THE HILLTOPS ADMINISTRATOR Wendy Tuckerman

The last few weeks have seen some extreme weather conditions throughout the Hilltops region causing damage and disruption across the entire road network. Late on the evening of Friday July 22nd, the area between Frogmore and Wyangala received between 45-100mm of rain with the majority of it falling between the Reids Flat Road and Darbys Falls Road. The heavy rainfall and high winds have caused serious flooding across roadways. A large number of fallen branches and trees were removed by workers from the Boorowa Depot over the weekend. The majority of roads affected have suffered extensive culvert damage which will now need to be inspected and prioritised in line with Council’s work schedule. In the Harden area, up to 70mm of rain fell

in a twenty-minute period during one particularly damaging storm causing unsealed wash, water over sealed roads, and wash debris blocking stormwater culverts over a combined 50km area of roads. Harden staff have cleared approximately 50 trees and branches over the weekend following the severe winds experienced during the cold front that passed. In the Young area, the A41 Olympic Highway was closed at Bendick Murrell due to fallen power lines. Motorists between Cowra and Young were diverted via Grenfell. Across the entire Hilltops Council area, staff are going through the process of identifying the extent of the damage that has occurred on the road network to determine and prioritise the work that will need to be done to restore the network to a suitable condition. Council would like to advise road users to be cautious, not to drive through flood waters and ensure that they drive to the current conditions.

“This funding helps by matching funding that local organisations are investing to improve facilities – whether it is the purchase of new auditorium seating, exhibition lighting, the repair and conservation of collections or the digitalisation of collections.” Katrina Hodgkinson said in a statement. “Arts and cultural facilities, such as local galleries, museums and theatres, are important places where people gather to share and experience art and culture as well as chronicle and celebrate local history.” Applications for Regional Capital funding, for projects commencing after 1 January 2017, are open until Monday 5 September 2016. McLachlan Group to Host Annual Bull Sale

Plans For Post-Vietnam War Support Group in the Region

Grenfell returned serviceman Antaine O’Flannagan wants to establish a peer support network for returned service men and women who have fought in modern wars, and is looking for other returned service people from wars post-Vietnam. Mr O’Flannagan resides in Grenfell, but is calling upon veterans from the whole Central West and South West of NSW, including Young, Harden, Boorowa, Cowra, Canowindra, Forbes, Parkes, West Wyalong, Temora, Cootamundra and Condobolin. With local RSL sub-branches having mostly Vietnam War veterans or older, Mr Flannagan said he wanted to put together a support group to meet on a monthly basis with veterans of the Gulf War, Iraq War, Afghanistan War, and other modern wars on terrorism. He would like the group to meet once per month, in a different town each time, and have

a coffee or a meal, and be able to talk to likeminded people who understand what fighting in a modern war is like. Mr Flannagan said he would also like to see the group keep continuous contact with one another, as a way of offering peer support. “The Returned Service League of Australia is great, and local RSL sub-branches do a tremendous job in their communities, but because their membership is dominated by Vietnam War veterans or older, some modern war veterans don’t feel it’s their place,” he said. “My idea is to start up a group for Central and South West NSW where there is peer support for modern war veterans, and where they’re comfortable to talk to people that know exactly where they’ve come from.” Anyone interested in the group can call Antaine on 0478 740 533.

The McLachlan Group bull breeding business will be holding its annual bull sale at the ‘North Logan’ property on North Logan Road, Cowra, on August 10. The sale will be the business’ fifth annual sale, and McLachlan Group’s Warren Miller said it should be a popular sale. McLachlan Group is a bull breeding business that sells Angus bulls, Charolais bulls and Poll Hereford bulls. All of their bulls are grass fed, meaning they live longer, and produce better quality beef. The business mostly sells cattle directly to meat works businesses, but hosts its big annual sale once per year. Mr Miller said the quality and performance of McLachlan Group’s bulls meant its bulls were very valuable. “We strive to make our bulls live as long as possible, and live a healthy life, which is why we grass feed them,” he said. “Our bulls are of the highest quality, which means our buyers get the best grass fed beef they can.” Mr Miller said the past four annual sales, the previous two of which have been in Cowra and the two before in the Southern Highlands, have been hugely popular, with bulls selling for about $4000 each. He expected the August 10 sale in Cowra to be similar. The sale will feature 35 Angus bulls, 20 Charolais bulls and 2 Poll hereford bulls, with this sale being the first time the McLachlan Group has sold Poll Hereford bulls. With Angus bulls being the most popular for beef, Mr Miller said he expected these to sell fast. By Joshua Matic

IMAGE: The South West Slopes and NSW Trial Yard Dog Championships are coming to Boorowa this October.

NSW Trial Yard Dog Championships Coming to Boorowa Just when you thought Boorowa’s biggest and most famous annual event, Woolfest, couldn’t get any bigger, you thought wrong. The NSW Trial Yard Dog Championships will be held in Boorowa for the first time ever on the weekend of Woolfest, with the championships being held at the St Josephs Primary School oval on Sunday October 2nd. The event will cap off a huge Woolfest weekend, with the day before also seeing Boorowa host the South West Slopes Trial Yard Dog Championships. Trial Yard Dog events have working farm dogs compete in different obstacles that replicate real life farm work. The South West Slopes and NSW events in Boorowa will run with three different obstacles - a drenching race, draught work, and sheep loading. The South West Slopes event will lead up to the NSW Championships.

It is one of 16 Trial Yard Dog events held across NSW throughout the year, with the top 10 dogs from the ‘improver’ and ‘open’ divisions qualifying for the NSW Championships event. The South West Slopes event will have four divisions- maiden, novice, improver and openhowever only dogs from the latter two divisions can qualify for the NSW Championships. Dogs from the higher two divisions can also race in the bottom two divisions, however dogs from the lower two cannot compete in the higher two. Event Coordinator Nathan Cayfe said the calibre of competition at the NSW Championships would be very high. “We’ll have lots of former state champions racing, so it will be a great spectacle for Boorowa,” he said. “We’ll have up to 70-80 dogs competing.” By Joshua Matic

Travel With Confidence

IMAGE: The Harden Post Office is on the market with current owners Ross and Lorraine Pollock looking to retire.

Pollocks Look for Buyer After 19 Years of Harden-Murrumburrah Service

After owning and operating the Harden Licensed Post Office for just under 19 years now, Licensees Ross Pollock and Lorraine Pollock are looking forward to retiring. However before this can happen, they need to sell the business, and they are both urging anyone interested in buying a strong, local business to come forward. The business, which is licensed under Australia Post, comes with the post office business, the license with Australia Post, and the residence that is on site at the post office. Ross Pollock said the business was not too difficult to run. “There are many benefits to operating this post office. The business is doing very well at the moment and has great return,” he said. “You also get great customer satisfaction, and being mostly just a 9am-5pm, five days

a week job, you get weekends and public holidays off.” “In January Australia Post also increased its funding to its licensed post offices, so there is that benefit as well.” Mr Pollock has, remarkably, been working for Australia Post in one form or another for 55 years. He started working for the organisation as a 15-year old boy. His wife Lorraine and himself have worked at the Harden Post Office since 1985, but bought the business in 1997 when Australia Post sold it as an independent licence, from being a corporately run office. Mr Pollock took a redundancy and then bought the post office back. “We’ve focused a lot on customer service over the past 19 years and strive to go above and beyond for our customers, and that’s something we’re proud of,” he said.

He has only been in Cootamundra for five years, but Coota Signs owner Quentin Tomkies is already famous for most of the signs you see around Cootamundra today. Coota Signs is basically the face of most other businesses around the town, but not only can the business create signs, it can also do graphic design and printing services. Its printing service covers a huge range in itself, with it being able to print magnets, business cards, banners, stickers, vehicle graphics and shirt graphics, just to name a few. Mr Tomkies owns the business with his wife Jo, and has done since making the move to Cootamundra from tropical North Queensland five years ago. Before that he spent eight years working as a sign maker in his old hometown of Ingham.

Posh Hair and Beauty is Coota’s Place For a Haircut Posh Hair and Beauty on Parker owner and head hairdresser Claudia Dowell says her business’ youth and fresh ideas are what sets it apart from similar businesses in the Cootamundra region. Ms Dowell, 21, took over the business in January this year, and renamed and branded the business. It has since gone from strength to strength. “I’m only 21, and have done all my training in Wagga Wagga with some very talented hairdressers, and I think that sets the salon aside from others,” she said. “I think differently to other salon owners. I also have a great team of staff, and a great clientele base as well.” The salon specialises in all things ‘hair’-

Wattle Tree the Place to Stay in Cootamundra Cootamundra’s Wattle Tree Motel is known as the “friendliest” motel in Cootamundra and with the beautiful rooms it has to offer, it proves to be a great stay for visitors to the town. The Wattle Tree Motel is located just off the main street (Parker Street) of Cootamundra, at 66 Wallendoon Street, but is still located just a stones throw away from all of the town’s shops and services. Being off the main street means that it is also more quiet and peaceful, and guests at the motel will enjoy a great night’s sleep. For those travelling on business, the motel is located only a few blocks up the road from the Cootamundra Office of Gundagai Council, and for those travelling for leisure, it is a short walk to the Cootamundra RSL Club, most of the town’s cafes and restaurants, and to the train station. The train station will link guests to Wagga Wagga, Sydney, and other towns in between. Mick Mitchell and Judy Mitchell own and operate the motel, and their beautiful custom-

er service will ensure you have a great stay at the Wattle Tree Motel. My House My Home Time to Prepare Your Garden for Spring With just one month left before Spring, it is time to start preparing your garden for Spring, according to Golden Glance Nursery business partner Martin Sullivan. Mr Sullivan said recent heavy rainfalls in the Hilltops region meant Spring was looking like a bumper season. Spring is the best season for growing vegetable patches as well as fruits, flowers and herbs. Mr Sullivan said now is the right time to start preparing the garden for Spring growth. “If you haven’t done so already, you’ll need to choose which part of your garden you plan to grow your fruit, vegetables, herbs or flowers, and start turning over

all of the weeds, adding mulch, and then a manure base,” he said. “Then leave it for a month and you’ll be able to start planting the seeds for your vegetables, fruit, flowers and herbs.” “In terms of flowers, it will be important for people to start planting their bulbs for summer flowers as well. This needs to be done in Winter, otherwise it’ll be too late by the time Summer comes around.” With Winter time generally being the time of year with the least garden mainte-

nance, Mr Sullivan said now would also be a good time to start planning bigger outdoor projects, such as pergolas, bbq areas or decks. “Now is the best time to start doing larger jobs as well, because you generally don’t need to spend as much time gardening, mowing, edge trimming or doing other maintenance,” he said. Mr Sullivan said people should also prune grape vines, roses, and spray fruit trees before Winter ends as well.

Jim Cusack HOUSE of the week

Acreage Auction Raine & Horne Young’s property of the week is this fine 12.8 acres situated on the skyline of Boundary Road with northerly aspect and views over the town. This traditional 4 bedroom brick veneer home offers an ensuite with a spa bath, open plan kitchen with gas cooking, dining area and a large family room kept warm by a cosy wood fire. The tiled dining room takes full advantage of the outlook and has full access to the verandah to take your entertaining to the next level. The double lock up garage and house are situated on flat land to enable easy access for everyone. Just minutes from town, this small acreage property is sure to please a family looking to give their children room to

explore or anyone looking for the quiet life. Located at 240 Boundary Road this property is to be auctioned August 20th on site. Full particulars and/or an inspection can be arranged by contacting Kim Goonan on 0412823607.

I was born and raised on my family’s property in Galong, educated in Young at Hennessy Catholic College (formerly Christian Brothers) and completed my high school education at St Gregory’s College in Campbelltown. I am married to Anna and have three children - Elizabeth 23, Kathleen 21 and James 18. My close ties to Young and surrounding districts have enabled me to gain strong values, leading me to have a significant interest in community activities and properties in the local area. While I sell residential homes in town and I know the local urban market, my involvement in the sale of farms and rural acreage has increased. Selling rural and residential property calls for a high degree of commitment and persistence, as well as an understanding of the dynamics and economics of selling properties. I bring these qualities along with integrity. Currently we have strong enquiries for rural acreage. I can be contacted on 0428 867 319 for a confidential appraisal.

HILLTOPS REGION SPORT

IMAGE: The Young Yabbies at their recent anti-domestic violence campaign. First grade have bowed out of the competition, while second grade have qualified for the finals.

Yabbies Second Grade Secure a Spot in the Finals While First Grade Fails to Fire

On a muddy pitch in wet and windy conditions the Young Yabbies second grade side had a tough hit out against ADFA on Saturday. After a scoreless first half the Yabbies turned it on in the second half. Strong forward runs caused ADFA to over commit players to the breakdown, creating space out wide for the backs. Winger Corey Randall and centre Julian Roles both crossed the line twice to create the 26-0

final result. “We stuck to our game plan throughout the whole game. The first half was a good battle and the game really could have gone either way. We lifted in the second half and they just couldn’t match us,” said coach Tom Wills. Another superb kicking game by Peter Maher helped the Yabbies dominate field position in the second

half, earning him players’ player of the match. Roles had a stellar performance in attack and defence, earning him best on ground, followed by Corey Randall and Matt Reid. Next Sunday the Yabbies will take on Goulburn in the first round of the finals, to be played at Viking Oval in Canberra. The last game of the year for the Yabbies first grade started strong on a sloppy pitch. ADFA were first to score but the Yabbies hit back soon after. Jim Martin made a good break to get the Yabbies in a great attacking position, which Riley Turner finished with a nice try under the posts. Unfortunately the Yabbies then switched off, allowing ADFA to hit back within minutes. From the kick off the Yabbies took advantage from an ADFA mistake, with Riley Turner again scoring out wide after a nice ball from captain/coach Mick Stallard. Half time saw the score at 19-12 ADFA’s way. In the second half things started to fall apart for the Yabbies, who allowed ADFA to score a quick try. The Yabbies regrouped and Hagon Williams scored what is said to be the try of the year after he chipped and chased from 40 out. With his speed and agility he left defenders in his path. This however didn’t help the score line as ADFA broke through the Yabbies’ defence, scoring another three quick tries, making the final score 45-19. This score didn’t reflect the game or the Yabbies spirits as they never gave up. A big congratulations to Will Mundy and Riley Turner for stepping up and playing in 1st grade. The top three players of the match were Zac Williams, Brendan Shoard and Ethan Richens. Turner got the players’ player award. By Joshua Matic
