Katrina Hodgkinson Happy to Call the Hilltops Home State Member for Cootamundra Katrina Hodgkinson said she is delighted to finally be in her new office after two years of negotiations. Mrs Hodgkinson is now calling the Hilltops region home, after moving from her former office in Yass into her new one in Young last Wednesday. Last year’s State Election saw some boundary changes for electorates across the state, with Mrs Hodgkinson’s former electorate of Burrinjuck having its boundaries adjusted and its name changed to ‘Cootamundra’. Mrs Hodgkinson’s former Burrinjuck electorate incorporated Yass, but with the Cootamundra electorate not incorporating that town, she needed to find somewhere within her new electoral boundaries to set up an office. She first started trying to organise this two years ago, when it was first announced the
electorate boundaries would be changed, but the State Government told her the office spaces she had been looking at were too small. This forced Mrs Hodgkinson to stay in her Yass office a year and a half into her new term in Parliament, despite Yass no longer being a part of her electorate. Her new office is located at 140 Boorowa Street in Young, with the space becoming available earlier this year, and the State Government approving it. Mrs Hodgkinson said it was great to have closer access to the people of her electorate. “It was highly inconvenient doing everything from Yass,” she said. “It’s important to have the staff here in the electorate to deal with constituent enquiries.” By Joshua Matic.

FROM THE HILLTOPS ADMINISTRATOR Wendy Tuckerman
Over the past two weeks, Hilltops Council Administrator Wendy Tuckerman and General Manager Anthony McMahon have visited fifteen communities within the region to explain the guidelines for the Stronger Communities Fund. The community forums afforded residents and community groups an opportunity to engage with Council and put forward
ideas to shape the development of their communities. The Stronger Communities Fund is a joint initiative between the NSW Government and Hilltops Council with grants of up to $50,000 available for incorporated not for profit community based organisations and Section 355 Committees of Council with up to $1 million available under the program. “This is a great opportunity for community groups to work together with Hilltops Council to deliver important local projects that will make a real difference to our community. There are some terrific initiatives throughout the Hilltops region, in the town centres and smaller villages and I encourage all eligible
organisations with a top project in mind to submit an application,” Member for Cootamundra, Katrina Hodgkinson said. Community groups across the Hilltops are demonstrating strong levels of interest in the Fund. Project suggestions may include upgrades of club facilities, funding of sporting or playground equipment, and projects that will improve the delivery of community services. Applications will close on 19th August at 5.00pm. Application packages can be found on the Hilltops Council website: www.hilltops. nsw.gov.au or by contacting Leanne Leihn (Special Projects Officer) at the Boorowa office on P: 6380 2000 or via email at leanne. leihn@hilltops.nsw.gov.au.

IMAGE: A group of students at the opening of St Mary’s Primary School’s Wiradjuri Garden last Thursday.
St Mary’s Wiradjuri Garden St Mary’s Primary School has celebrated NAIDOC Week by officially opening its Wiradjuri Garden at the school. NAIDOC week celebrated nation-wide the week of July 3-10, but as this was during the school holidays, St Mary’s celebrated it last week. Director of Catholic Education for the Canberra and Goulburn region, of which Young is included in, Mrs Nadjecki, visited St Mary’s last Thursday to host a special assembly to open the garden. The garden design includes the representation of the three major rivers in the Wiradjuri region, which are the Murrumbidgee, Lachlan and Macquarie Rivers. ‘Wiradjuri’ means ‘land of three rivers’. With the Wiradjuri territory being a large area of grass and woodlands, the garden was also designed to include those features. “The Wiradjuri people were skilled in hunting, gathering and fishing; they showed a lot

of respect to the land and the environment and the garden was created to express our respect and gratitude for the Wiradjuri people and their way of life,” St Mary’s Principal Louise Grant said. “Each class decorated a stone with symbols of the Wiradjuri territory and culture, such as animals and tools used for hunting. These stones were placed in circle formations in the garden to the represent Wiradjuri communities.” The ‘Little Irribins’, a group of students with Indigenous heritage, and Mandy Williams, who designed and built the garden, explained the significance of it to Mrs Nadjecki during her visit. After the assembly, each student then decorated their own small stone back in their classrooms. The stones will be kept in a special place in each room as a reminder of the Wiradjuri people.
The Young Hospital Auxiliary Soup Day was a huge social and financial success, thanks to the public who attended the event that was held at the Town Hall Young, on 1st August, 2016. Almost 150 people purchased lunch and were able to sit and relax, talking with friends and enjoying a delicious meal, all while helping to raise funds for the Young Hospital. People were able to choose from a variety of tasty soups and there was a delicious spread of slices and cakes. Not only did members generously set up, cook and serve, there were several other helpers on the day who came together to join the team of the Auxiliary assisting in various ways, such as donating vegetables, cooking and other general duties that needed to be done. President, Janice Ward, was delighted with the community and business support, including that of publicity, donations of raffle goods and vegetables. When all the final proceeds are counted from the lunch and raffle sales, they will be used to buy much needed equipment for the Young Hospital.

Boorowa Hospital Holds Birthday Celebrations in Style The Boorowa Hospital celebrated its 20th birthday in style last Saturday at a fundraising function held at the Boorowa Ex-Services Club. A champagne and canapé evening was held, with numerous items of sports memorabilia also being auctioned off. The auction was the main fundraiser, however funds were also raised from door fees from the function, as well as personal donations. The event was created to celebrate the hospital’s 20th birthday and to raise funds for the Boorowa Hospital Auxiliary. In total, more than $5000 was raised, which will be used by the Auxiliary to fund new equipment for the hospital. Auxiliary President Judy McGuinness said it was great to see the people of Boorowa come out to support their local hospital for the occasion. “The Boorowa Hospital Auxiliary would like to thank the public for coming out and supporting
the hospital. It was a very successful, happy, friendly and fun evening, and the auction went really well. We managed to sell all the sports memorabilia,” she said. Former Boorowa Mayor Rob Gledhill and former Boorowa Hospital board member Chris Corcoran were guest speakers at the function. Mr Gledhill was the Mayor at the time the original Boorowa Hospital burned down, and spoke about his endeavours to secure funding from the State Government to build a new hospital. Mr Corcoran played a major role in re-planning the new hospital, and spoke about how the former board put their plan together. Boards for rural hospitals have since been abandoned. Meanwhile, the Boorowa Hospital Auxiliary will be holding a meeting at the Ex-Services on August 26, starting at 2pm. The public is invited and welcomed.

IMAGE: A map of the Graincorp Grain Receival Site in Cunningar, near Harden.
Cunningar Grain Receival Site to Get a Facelift The Cunningar Grain Receival Site near Harden is set to get an upgrade worth more than $8 million, with works to the Graincorp site to start in February next year. The project is being supported by corporate, government and community funding, and should be completed around October next year. With the Hilltops Region being one of the biggest wheat growing areas in Australia, this project will be a massive coup, and is expected to give the region competitive access to lucrative export markets that will deliver significant benefits to the region. Funding from three different areas is being brought in to make the project possible, with Graincorp contributing $3.6 million, the Federal Government’s National Stronger Region’s Fund putting in $2.5 million, and another $2 million being sourced from the community and local grain growers.
As well as benefitting the local grain market, the project will have many benefits for the local economy and community. It will create more than 20 construction jobs, boost the economy through increased commercial activity, and create 10 seasonal harvest jobs. The project will also see 4,000 less return truck journeys from site to port, and provide a $10 per tonne freight benefit to growers. The Graincorp site upgrade will start with rail upgrades, which will involve an increase in axle weights to 25 tonnes from 19 tonnes, the reinstatement and extension of existing sidings, and the construction of new sidings. Construction of garner bin and spout to load trains at 1000 tonnes per hour will then begin, as well as the construction of inter connecting conveyors from existing storage to new load points, and upgrades to site traffic infrastructure. By Joshua Matic.
Local stock worker and Chalker Pastoral Services owner, Brent Chalker, says his approach to stock handling, adopting practices and technologies is what puts him in front of other stock workers in the Hilltops region and across NSW. Mr Chalker started the business four years ago, and initially ran it part time whilst he was still working on a merino stud, where he crutched and marked lambs, and managed properties on weekends and after hours. He has always had a passion for the country, and has always worked in agriculture. After growing up on his grandparents’ property in the Southern Highlands, he completed a trade and became a qualified plumber. He had always wanted to work on his family’s farm, but this wasn’t viable at the time. He became a Jackeroo, and then worked as an overseer on a Merino stud, which exposed him to a wide scope of work. He assisted in the running of what he said was a “progressive stud and commercial livestock trading operation”. He started Chalker Pastoral Services initially as a source of secondary work, however the workload increased greatly, so he made the choice to pursue self employment full time. “Handling large numbers of stock on my own, I saw the need in the industry for skilled labour and have drawn on my experience to provide a service that helps producers,” he said. “My businesses adaption to modern technology also allows us to work effectively and efficiently.” “We travel all over the state as well to provide our services. For example in April, we were in Warren for two weeks mustering and processing ewes for PARAWAY, and then we went to Bombala for the next two weeks foot paring for a wool producer there.” Mr Chalker said he enjoys working with stock and understanding them, while knowing what to do to get the best result.

Here a few tips for you when selling your home. 1. De-Clutter – One of the main points that add to the “cluttered look” is large amounts of furniture. Think about what you can really live without. Would the house look larger with half as much furniture? 2. Transform that space – Is there a place in your house that is currently a wasted area for you, but to someone else could be a reading nook, study area or even a cosy snug? Move your furniture around and create obvious flows to your areas and you may just transform that little corner in to your selling point. 3. Time to paint? – A tip for painting to make a room look larger is to match the colour of paints on the walls that have flow through areas in to another space. If your kitchen and dining room are situated together, use the same colour to create the sense of space. Designers also recommend to increase the size of a smaller room to match the colour of your walls to your drapery to take your room to a new level of sophistication. 4. Threes not a crowd – When it comes to placing accessories, odd numbers are preferable, especially in groups of three. Designers suggest to place your accessories in a triangle shape and group textures, colour or shapes for a unifying look and vary heights of the items for maximum effect.

Rural Roundup Grass Tetany/Transit Tetany With a few cases of grass/transit tetany reported in both cattle and sheep lately, it is timely to consider our options. There have been reported cases of hypomagnesmia in lambs. Also, be careful of bringing stock from areas that are less fortunate than ours at the moment. Give them time to properly adjust, provide them with good quality roughage so they do not gorge feed on arrival to their new home. Remember prevention is always far better than cure. Grass tetany is most common in lactating beef or dairy cows, but can affect all classes of stock. Grass Tetany is also known as hypomagnesaemia. Cause: • Low magnesium levels in the blood and fluid surrounding the brain. - High potassium and nitrogen interfere with magnesium absorption in the rumen - Cattle depend on frequent intake of magnesium to maintain normal blood levels.
Prevention & Management: • Pasture management - If possible remove stock from problem paddocks until the pasture is more mature. - Speak to a Landmark agronomist regarding fertiliser practices in problem paddocks. •F eed management - Provide good quality legume hay to provide a source of calcium & magnesium. •S upplement magnesium - Sodium is necessary for magnesium absorption, therefore salt should be included when supplementing magnesium. • 4 Season Co. MMM block - Contains Magesium, Minerals and Molasses for palatability and better intake. Contact Landmark Young.
McLachlan Groups Bull Sale The McLachlan Group bull breeding business will be holding its annual bull sale at the ‘North Logan’ property on North Logan Road, Cowra, on August 10. The sale will feature 35 Angus bulls, 20 Charolais bulls and 2 Poll hereford bulls, with this sale being the first time the McLachlan Group has sold Poll hereford bulls. The business mostly sells cattle directly to meat works businesses, but hosts its big annual sale once per year. Words You Should Never Use in Insurance: Here are common “wrong words” that could slow down or impede an otherwise legitimate insurance claim.
‘Sorry’ - Don’t Assume anything - Without sounding insensitive, try to avoid saying “I’m sorry” because it can be interpreted as an admission of fault. Describe what happened to the best of your ability and stick to the facts. ‘In my opinion’ - Don’t offer your opinion. Just give the cold, hard facts. . . . Don’t say, ‘I think,’ ‘I feel,’ ‘I felt.’ No touchyfeely stuff. For example, following a car accident, people can rarely provide an accurate estimate of the rate, speed and flow of traffic. Unless you were staring at the speedometer, you don’t know how fast you were going. ‘Flood’ - Policyholders often use the “F” word inappropriately, and it can trigger an alarm with insurers since flood damage (as we have seen in the media of late) is not covered under many standard home policies. To an insurance company, “flood” means water from a nearby lake, stream, river or other body of water. Many people believe their house is flooded because it’s full of water - but it’s not a flood by the insurance definition. If your water damage did not come from an overflow of a nearby lake, stream, river or other body of water, don’t even say the word “flood.” If your house is filled with water due to a burst pipe, it’s not considered a flood. When making an insurance claim, what you say can mean the difference between fast payment and a nightmarish process. Insurance companies are sensitive to certain words. Of course, lying to your insurance company or misrepresenting facts is fraud and your claim will surely be denied if the insurer finds out. But using the right words to accurately describe your problem is important.

HILLTOPS REGION SPORT
Hilltops Baseball to Launch The Hilltops Sport Group Incorporated are pleased to announce the official launch of the Hilltops Baseball Association, the newest all-inclusive sporting association to launch in the Hilltops Shire region. The Hilltops Baseball Association will be launching in the later part of the 2016 calendar year with the launch of the Aussie T-Ball Program, an initiative to introduce children aged between 6-11 to the game of Baseball through an all-inclusive, fun, exciting and skill developing game of T-Ball. Affiliated with the Australian Baseball Federation (‘ABF’) and Baseball New South Wales (‘BNSW’), and in partnership with Domestic Australian Baseball League (‘ABL’) franchises the Sydney Blue Sox and
Canberra Cavalry, the ten-week program will launch this upcoming October and run through to the later part of December. The advantage of the Aussie T-Ball Program is that the participants of each team (six) receive the opportunity to field in each position on the field rotating from Catcher to first base, out-fielder, second and third base. While also receiving the opportunity to hit from the tee at every position throughout the six-inning a side game which takes approximately an hour to play, when the competition launches on Friday afternoons during the summer months. All participants will receive an Aussie TBall participation pack, supplied through the
ABF and BNSW, as well as receive a Hilltops Baseball shirt on loan for the season. Due to this being the inaugural season of the competition, which will be played each Friday afternoon at Young’s Sawpit Gully Oval from 4pm during the competitions period, the Hilltops Baseball Association have taken the opportunity to restrict the participation numbers to just thirty-six (36) to ensure that all participants have the developmental capabilities that are on offer from our highly trained coaches and officials. Therefore parents and caregivers are encouraged to register their children early in order to avoid disappointment of missing out once registrations officially open this upcoming Monday.
The Young Cherrypickers will be aiming to finish the 2016 Group Nine season in the top three, and coach Neil Thorman said they would focus on winning their last two games to give them a chance. While they will be relying on the Albury Thunder to beat the Junee Diesels this weekend, Thorman said his side’s destiny will still mostly be in its own hands, and said they could not afford to be complacent against the 10th-placed Tumut Blues in Tumut this Sunday. Thorman said his men had plenty to work on in attack after suffering their first loss on over three months last Sunday at Alfred Oval to Gundagai, 20-6, but also said there were plenty of positives to take out of the match.
He said his men needed to work on their attacking structure against Tumut on Sunday. “We started the Gundagai game well but lost our way in the second half,” he said. “We conceded some penalties and made some errors, but we were also impatient with our attack, especially in our own 20 metres. We put ourselves under too much pressure.” However, Thorman said that despite losing to the second-placed Gundagai, he was very happy with his men’s effort to compete physically with a stronger side. “It was our biggest game of the season, and I was very pleased with our defensive effort and competing with a top team,” he said. “We lead Gundagai 6-2 early in the first half
which was a positive sign, but we just let them back in the game.” The Cherrypickers will prepare for a tough final round match against third-placed Junee the following weekend, and should Albury beat Junee this weekend, and with Young currently sitting in fourth position, it will be the battle for third spot. The Gundagai Tigers and Wagga Wagga South City are too far in front for the Cherrypickers to have a crack at the top two, but sitting in fourth position on 23 points, and having Albury right behind them on 22 points, they must win their remaining games to guarantee a top four position. We’ve got strong training drills planned for this week. We’ve been branded as the underdogs of the competition which is fine with us, and we welcome the other teams underestimating our strength as a unit,” said Coach Tom Wills.
Yabbies Seconds Keep Finals Dream Alive
IMAGE: The Young Yabbies take on the Queanbeyan Whites at Viking Park in their semi-final last Saturday.
On a sunny Sunday morning in Canberra the Young Yabbies second grade side took on the Queanbeyan Whites in the minor semi-final in the John I Dent Cup First Division. The first blood went to the Whites, who took an early penalty goal to lead 3-0. Young were quick to hit back after a well-placed penalty kick earned good field position. From the lineout the ball was spread wide to fullback James Maloney who split the defence to score what looked like an easy try to lead 5-3. Maloney was the next to score after the Yabbies’ forwards worked the ball up the field, drawing Whites players towards the ruck, and creating room for the backs. Maloney scored a try and the conversion meant the Yabbies lead 12-3. Pete Maher showed great skill again with the boot, consistently pinning the opposition down in their own
22, and after more forward phases the backs capitalised, with Julien Roles crossing just wide of the post, for a converted try to take the lead to 16 points. During halftime the Yabbies were told to make their tackles stick and to keep asking questions of the opposition’s defence. Soon after half time Ross Everdell created his own space, steaming through a gap in the defence, and crossed over to widen the gap to 26-3 with a converted try. The Yabbies were tested a number of times for the remainder of the game with the Whites crossing three times to bring the score to 20-26. It wasn’t enough though, with the Yabbies holding on to secure the win and a place in the major semi-final next Saturday against the Western Districts Lions. The players’ player award went to Jack Ever-
