Maimuru to Demondrille Rail to Reopen After years of lobbying the government with Katrina Hodgkinson addressing the Legislative Assembly on several occasions since 2007, rail infrastructure in regional NSW has received a major boost with $15 million to fund numerous pilot projects to kick start improvements to the state’s rail freight network on top of the $400 million Fixing Country Rail program. Minister for Freight Duncan Gay joined Parliamentary Secretary for Southern NSW and Member for Cootamundra Katrina Hogkinson in Young to make the announcement, where $5 million will be invested to reopen the 56-kilometre Maimuru to Demondrille section of the Cowra Line. “The NSW Government is determined to shift more bulk freight on to railway lines to ensure we get produce from paddocks to
ports as quickly and efficiently as possible,” Mr Gay said. “The freight transport network is the backbone of country NSW and we need to improve its efficiency to take more freight off our local and regional roads - a massive win for regional communities, economies and the state’s producers.” $14 million will be invested across six projects to receive Fixing Country Rail pilot funding with the reinstatement of the Maimuru to Demondrille railway line amongst the projects, with funding also extended to $1.5 million for rail siding extension at Burren Junction to help service a major grain receival site and $1 million for upgrading rail siding at the Canberra Railway Freight Terminal (Fyshwick) amongst the funds upgrades.

FROM THE HILLTOPS ADMINISTRATOR Wendy Tuckerman
On Monday, I had the pleasure of meeting with Minister for Roads, Maritime & Freight Duncan Gay and Member for Cootamundra, Katrina Hodgkinson, in Young as they announced that the NSW Government will be investing $5 million to reinstate the 56-kilometre Maimuru to Demondrille Railway Line, under the “Fixing Country Rail” funding program.
The upgrading of railway infrastructure, to transport bulk freight from paddock to port, is an important initiative that the NSW Government has been spearheading since 2011. Country NSW relies heavily on the freight transport network and rail enhancement projects will improve freight transport efficiency by reducing connectivity constraints. With $14 million to be invested across six projects, Hilltops Council has been extremely fortunate to be allocated $5 million for the reopening of such an important transport link. Railway infrastructure is crucial not only in terms of freight, in addition economic development and tourism.

I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank those that laid the ground work for this important announcement through their efforts and hard work. Mr. Stuart Freudenstein and Mr. Chris Manchester, former Mayors of Young and Harden respectively and now members of the Hilltops Local Representation Committees were absolutely instrumental in securing this funding as was Mr. David Aber, Hilltops Council Deputy General Manager. It takes strong leadership and an enormous team effort to ensure that the Hilltops Region continues to grow and funding such as this provides opportunities for all of our communities.

Young Lions Club Quilt Show
IMAGE: The Young Theatre Company will be performing a rendition of the famous Calendar Girls story.
Calendar Girls Come to Young The Young Theatre Company have once again come together to bring you a production of award winning proportions, this time with their take on the incredible and inspirational English true story of ‘Calendar Girls’. For those of you not familiar with ‘Calendar Girls’, the story is told of a group of country women who band together to raise funds for a local hospital after one the women’s husband’s passes away from Leukaemia. The women, all associated through the Women’s Institute (not unlike our CWA), band together to produce a calendar where the women are all tastefully photographed nude with items such as sunflowers, cakes, buns and other items covering them. The calendar sold 88,000 copies and raised more than $550,000 for Leukaemia research. Keeping in this fundraising vein, The Young Theatre Company have too pro-
duced their own calendar with all funds going to Can Assist, to help raise much needed funds for families in the Hilltops region. “Rob Provan is a fantastic Director and there is a lot of props and a lot of costume changes which is why it is so enticing to be involved and why audiences will love this show,” Joy Rule explains. “The reason we decided to do the calendar in conjunction with the production was to raise money for Can Assist and all the money stays local and helps local people.” The Young Theatre Company will also be raising money by holding a charity head shave on Friday 9th September at the Wombat Hotel. ‘Calendar Girls’ opens September 16th at the Catherine McAuley Hall, Young. Tickets available from M&Ms Music, Young.
The Lions Club Annual Quilt show held in May saw the Town Hall transformed with beautiful quilts and colourful stalls. There were six different sections in which quilts could be entered with some quilts from interstate. The many visitors to the show were not disappointed and they came from far and wide. Jenny Bowker, who showed us the quilts from ‘The Tentmakers of Cairo’ two years ago, opened the Quilt Show. This year she showed a selection of 18 quilts made in ‘The Modern Movement’ way of quilting. A big thank you to Jenny and the Modern Quilting Movement Group. The first prize raffle was made by Lions member Jenny Tate and quilted by Ian Stewart of Young. It drew a lot of interest as did the second prize of a Accu cutter, with third prize being a fabric parcel. Prizes were excitedly received by winners, as were the six section winners. The Challenge quilt ‘use our colours’ drew 11 entries which were of great interest to visitors- so much so that there is a list already of quilters who are interested in our challenge for next year. A big thank you to the Community of Artists of Young for allowing quilts to be hung on their special hanging system. It made the hanging of quilts so much easier and displayed them to their best advantage. Thank you to our sponsors who provided prizes. A big thank you to quilters, wonderful helpers and Lions members for the many ways they helped. It was indeed a very successful Quilt Show and put the Lions Club of Young on the map once again.

BOOROWANews...
IMAGE: Boorowa Early Education Centre Manager Sarah Rose was joined by Member for Hume Angus Taylor, two young boys and the Bendigo Bank mascot at the opening of its new facility in June.
Boorowa Early Education Centre Sees Rise in Numbers The Boorowa Early Education Centre has already seen a rise in child numbers since its renovations were completed in June and now the Centre is on the look out for a trainee to join its staff team and help cater for extra children. Around $700,000 has been spent on the facility, formerly known as Boorowa Preschool, to give it a major facelift that now allows it to run as a long day care Centre. Previously, it could only cater for children aged three to five, but it can now also take children aged 0-3, as well as a capacity of 76 children per day whereas before it was just 20.
Upgrades to the facility involved a major extension of the building as well as the purchase of new resources and equipment. The project was funded by a grant of $550,000 from the Federal Government, and the Boorowa Community Bank also contributed by way of its largest ever contribution to any one project by granting $132,000. The former Boorowa Council supported by in-kind staff contributions around project application assistance and management, and also contributed financial assistance of $32,000.

A trivia night organised by the Riles family raised over $13,000, Southern Phones granted $7000 for a storage shed, and the Boorowa Goldies donated $4000 from its annual Ladies Day fundraiser. The Boorowa Arts and Crafts Coop made a donation to the project and Patron Mrs Margaret Arnott also made a contribution. The Centre currently averages 29 children on its busiest days during the week, but is expecting this to jump up to an average of 39 children per day, which means the spare classroom it has will need to be used. This means an extra staff member will be needed to meet the legally required children to staff ratio. “Mondays have always been our quietest day of the week, averaging just three children per day, but from Monday August 15th, this number should jump straight up to nine,” said BEE Centre Director Sarah Jones. “We now need more staff, and we have advertised for a trainee position at the Centre.” “Once we hire, we can take children off our waiting list, and we expect to be able to do this in the coming months.” In other news, the BEE Centre has already started the process of phase two of its upgrades, which will involve landscaping its outside playground. The Centre has applied for a State Government grant through Member for Goulburn Pru Goward’s office, and hopes to secure funding to construct a new playground to go with the impressive new building it now has. Fundraising will also continue, with the Centre looking to purchase new learning resources and equipment for children. By Joshua Matic

QUESTION of the week
HARDENNews...
What are you looking forward to about winter ending?
I’m looking forward to riding my bike more in the warmer weather, and seeing all the blossoms around - Jack Stratford. IMAGE: Harden Country Motel co-owner Alison Doberer enjoys the view from the upper level of the new building at the motel. Photo: Joshua Matic.
New Harden Motel Aims to Bring More Tourists to Harden Harden Country Motel co-owner Alison Doberer says she hopes her motel’s new look will help bring more tourists into Harden. The Harden Country Motel, which is situated on the Burley Griffin Way on the Boorowa and Yass side of Harden, has undergone major upgrades this year, with a brand new building being constructed at the front of the original complex. The original part of the motel still exists, and the new building has been built in front of it. Five brand new rooms, a new breakfast room and reception desk feature in the new building, with each being worthy of a ‘deluxe’ rating. The new building has two stories, with rooms on the upper floor having nice views of Harden-Murrumburrah, as well as out across the pretty green paddocks.
More importantly though, the rooms on the ground floor are wheelchair accessible, and the bathrooms have also been built larger to accommodate this. This is something the motel did not have before, and Mrs Doberer, who owns the motel with husband Hilton, said this drove some guests away. The new facility can also host coaches and large groups of people, and Mrs Doberer said the motel was now capable of bringing more people into Harden. “Now that we can take coaches as well, we hope to attract a lot more large groups to Harden, and with the extra rooms, we can fit more people in.” “But we don’t just want us to benefit from this. We want every business in town to benefit from having more people coming in.” By Joshua Matic

Hennessy Catholic College Teacher Attends World Youth Day
Hennessy Students Assist the Poor in Cambodia IMAGE: Hennessy Catholic College students construct a house in Cambodia recently.
A group of 34 Hennessy Catholic College students recently embarked on a special trip to Cambodia to build homes for the poor. The trip, known as the Cambodia Immersion Program, is run for year 11 students, and is a part of Hennessy’s Social Justice Program. The program has now been running for three years, and groups of around 30 students have taken part in the program each year since. Hennessy conducts fundraising activities each year and raises funds to build homes in poor villages in Cambodia, before sending its group of year 11 students, as well as staff members, over to build the homes themselves. Normally, the students work on one house, while the staff work on another, and the two groups will often compete against each other to see who builds the best house. Hennessy also raises funds for an orphanage in Phnom Penh, Cambodia’s capital city, called Sisters of Mercy Orphanage. This year, Hennessy students and staff spent a week in two villages about a 30-minute drive away from the city of Siem Riep, and built two houses.
“Building the houses for the two villages was such an eye opener. Seeing how the traditional village people lived and what they did throughout the day amazed us all,” said IMAGE: Hennessy Catholic College participating students engage with local village student Lucy children in Cambodia during their recent trip there. Cambodia recently. Donges. “For me the highlight of the experience was the children and the gratefulness they showed. The village children didn’t speak English, but a simple smile was all that was needed,” said fellow student Sarah Roberts. Hennessy would like to thank Mitre 10, Office National and Gilberts book shop for making important donations to the program.
It is a tri-annual Catholic pilgrimage that attracts some two million people, and Young’s own Clare Grantham was lucky enough to be apart of this year’s World Youth Day event in Poland. Miss Grantham works as a teacher at Hennessy Catholic College, and embarked on a three-week pilgrimage, that formed a part of this year’s WYD, from Warsaw to Krakow, where the main mass took place. World Youth Day actually lasts for six days, with this year’s event in Krakow going from July 26th to July 31st. Miss Grantham travelled with the Archbishop of Canberra-Goulburn, Christopher Prouse, as well as a number of other Catholic school teachers from around the region. During their three week pilgrimage through Poland, the group traced the steps of former Pope John Paul II, before arriving in Krakow and camping in an allocated field just outside of the city. The main mass was hosted by the current Pope, Pope Francis. Miss Grantham, who was on her first WYD pilgrimage, said it was a great experience she would gladly be apart of again. “Pope Francis left me with a very memorable quote that I’ll never forget - ‘leave your mark on this world’- and it’s such an important message for our youth,” she said.

From its less than ideal beginnings in the shed across the road from the Young Services Club, NRG has come a long way, and it now has one of the best fitness facilities in the Hilltops region. Co-owner Chris Holt first started the business back in 1999, and his wife co-owner Kim Holt joined him in the running of the business about 12 months after he opened it. The gym has been in its current location of 19 Clarke Street Young for most of its existence, and since being there it has seen a number of upgrades as well. Today, the gym features a main floor for personal training and self-training, as well as an upstairs classroom, an upstairs bike studio, as well as a private ladies training area. The gym also has a full range of cardio equipment, as well as free weights and machine weights, and Mr Holt said their equipment is constantly updating. It runs a wide range
of different exercise classes for members, and non-members can also join in on a casual rate. Both Mr and Mrs Holt are fully qualified personal trainers, but they are also assisted by the great work of 12 other staff members who run their gym classes but also do personal training. Looking back over the past 17 years, both Mr and Mrs Holt said that in spite of having a top-class gym facility for the public to use, the most rewarding thing about running the gym was seeing people change or maintain a healthy lifestyle for their own good. “It’s really rewarding running this gym. Our youngest member is 12, and our eldest is 87. We also train disabled persons, and it’s great to see them all progress,” Mrs Holt said. “Especially seeing the disabled persons still training is great. It’s great for their lifestyle, and seeing them give it their all in every situation is wonderful.” NRG also provides personalised programs, and helps people rehabilitate from injuries. Living and Lifestyle Time to Get a Health Check Done on Your Pool
IMAGE: The Khaya coffee shop in Cootamundra owners Richard De Belin and Rose De Belin. Photo: Supplied.
The Khaya Works Towards Using Local Produce The Khaya coffee shop in Cootamundra may have only just come under new ownership, but the new owners already have big plans, with their eventual aim to only use local produce in their café. Rose De Belin and Richard De Belin now proudly own The Khaya, having taken it over in June this year, and their belief is to support local farmers and growers in the work they do in their business. The business currently stocks plenty of local produce, including honey from Harden, cherries from Young and the wider Hilltops region, chocolate from Junee, cordial from Albury, as well as locally grown hazlenuts. The Khaya also uses Australian grown coffee beans. But Rose De Belin said they wanted to take this vision further. “Our vision is for us to eventually have as much local produce as what is realistically possible. Obviously there will be some things that this cannot happen with,” she said. “We’ve started to build relationships with local farmers, and we plan to start using local product in future for our meals, such as beef, lamb, pork and chicken.” The Khaya is a boutique style coffee shop that also sells light meals and
homemade cakes and slices. It also sells local artwork. At the moment the café is open for breakfast and lunch from 8am-5pm Monday to Friday, and 8am-1pm on Saturdays. But Mrs De Belin said there were plans for it to open for dinner on a Saturday night, and eventually run a dinner service on Fridays and Saturdays.
With winter coming to an end and warmer weather now on the horizon, it is now time to get your swimming pools’ health checked, according to Summer’s Pools and Spas Young owner Bronwyne. Bronwyne said checks should be done on swimming pool pumps, filters and chlorinators, so they are ready to go for the busy summer season. She said during winter, when pools are far less frequently used, pool pumps can get leaks and run dry. She added, if the pump did not work properly, the pool would become dirty, and turn into a green colour. “Phil Lang from Summer’s Pools and Spas can come down to inspect anyone’s pool and do a full health check for them upon appointment,” said Bronwyne. “With water pumps, it’s highly important that they are healthy before being used again, especially in summer when pumps should be running for eight to 10 hours per day.” “They need to be ready for taking more pressure.” Bronwyne also said it was important for pool owners to start cleaning our their pools and ensuring their chlorine levels were adjusted properly. Call into Summer’s Pools and Spas today at 43 Main Street, Young, or give them a call on 6382 5544 to organise your pool health check. By Joshua Matic

The Antenna Guy Wins Tradie of the Month
Joel Hill is best known for being “The Antenna Guy”, and he has now found himself winning The Hilltops Phoenix and Young Workwear’s Top Tradie. Mr Hill runs his own business called The Antenna Guy, and services large sections of the Central West and South West of NSW to repair and maintain television antennas. He runs the business on his own and will go anywhere between Boorowa, Cootamundra, Cowra, Forbes, Grenfell, Gundagai, Harden, Junee, Temora, West Wyalong and Young. Mr Hill won himself a $100 voucher from Young Workwear, which he spent immediately on a set of new work pants. He said he felt proud of the great work he had done to be nominated for the award. “I’m feeling very proud as someone has paid me for the work that I’ve done for them, but still taken the time to nominate me for the award. You don’t really expect people to do anything for you after they’ve paid you,” he said. “I’m enjoying the work that I do. I prefer working in winter, as in summer, it gets extremely hot working in a roof, and I even need to timecap myself while I’m in the roof in summer.” Mr Hill is also a degree-qualified engineer.

IMAGE:The Young Cherrypickers celebrate a try after destroying the Tumut Blues 62-22 in Tumut last Sunday.
Cherrypickers Look for Top Three The Young Cherrypickers will be on the hunt for a top three Group Nine rugby league finish, when they face the Junee Diesels in the final round of the home-and-away season at Laurie Daley Oval on Sunday. Junee currently sits in third, but being just a single competition point ahead of Young, on 26 points, a win for the Cherrypickers will allow them to leapfrog Junee into third position, and secure them a home semi final. A loss to Junee will likely see them stay in the top four and still host a home semi final, but if they lose and the Albury Thunder cause a major upset over the Gundagai Tigers- one of the competition favourites- the Cherrypickers will finish fifth. This would mean they do not get a home semi final, but most importantly would not get a second chance in the finals.
They bounced back from a loss to the Gundagai Tigers two weeks ago, last week, to destroy the lowly-placed Tumut Blues 62-12 in a match where Young showed its attacking prowess. But despite the Armageddon-like win, Coach Neil Thorman was not getting too excited, and said the match-up between his men and the lowly Tumut did not give a true indication of where the Cherrypickers are at with their form. “Tumut were down to just eight first grade players, so they had to call nine players straight up from reserve grade to fill in,” he said. “Those players had just played in the reserve grade game, and were obviously very tired, so our players were able to do things on the field they wouldn’t normally be able to do.” “While our attack was very well executed, it was an unfair match-up, and we didn’t really get an indication of what we did well, and what we need to work on.”
However, Thorman said one thing he did pick up in his men’s win over Tumut was a hint of a “lazy” attitude, and he said this would need to be fixed for the important Junee clash. “I think because we were expected to beat Tumut, and because they had regular players out, we just knew we would win, and became a bit lazy as a result,” he said. “We only led 24-6 at half time, but came back strongly in the second half to score 40 points. We’ll need to do that for the full 80 minutes if we want to beat Junee.” In a positive for the Cherrypickers, Thorman said he had some selection “headaches” at the moment, with most injured players now ready to play again, and lots of depth within the club meaning players may have to compete for positions. With this in front of him, Thorman this week held three training sessions for players to prove their fitness and form. He said this would also be a good incentive for players, with Junee having lost their last three matches, would give the Cherrypickers an upper hand. “On the field we’ll still be looking to play basic football. Junee have lost their last three games but they’ve still proven they’re a good side,” he said. “We’ll be looking at completing our sets, both defensively and offensively, and our aim will be to start the match with five consecutive sets where we don’t make an error, and don’t concede any tries.” “Against Tumut at times we lacked concentration, and didn’t go up through the middle enough. This has been our greatest asset this season, and we’ll need to go back to that against Junee, before spreading the ball out wide and go on the attack.” By Joshua Matic

IMAGE: The Young Yabbies shake hands with the Western Districts Lions at the end of their major semi final loss to the Canberra-based club last Saturday.
Yabbies Seconds Fall Short of Grand Final
The Young Yabbies have fallen short of a maiden grand final birth in second grade of Canberra’s John I Dent Cup first division competition, but coach Tom Wills says his men can still be proud of what they have achieved. The Yabbies were simply out muscled by the Western Districts Lions in their major semi final clash at Viking Park in Tuggeranong last Saturday, going down 41-7. But considering this year was the first time the Young Yabbies Rugby Union Club had competed in the Canberra competition,
Wills said his men played great to get as far as they did. “It was a big effort for us to get as far as what we did,” Wills said. “We managed to finish third in our first season in the Canberra competition, and considering we did that against some much bigger clubs, we have gone a long way, even though we won’t be in the grand final.” Wills said his men’s effort was faultless in the major semi final loss, but admitted the Lions were just too strong and skillful.
“They were just much bigger, stronger and faster than us. Being a Canberra based club, they would be much better grilled,” he said. “I was still very proud of the effort our boys put in, and while it’s disappointing not to be a part of the grand final, we’ve still come a long way.” The three, two and one points for players of the match went to Julian Roles, Matt Happer and Ross Everdell respectively, while the players’ player award went Jack Everdell. It was not all bad news for the Yabbies last Saturday, however, with the club’s under 16s and under 18s sides easily winning their encounters, and booking a place in their respective grand finals. The under 16s won 48-0, while the under 18s made the scoreboard look more akin to a cricket scoreboard in posting 71 points to win by a whopping 57 points. In recapping the season that was, Wills said that Yabbies were still committed to competing in the Canberra competition in the future, and said it was a rewarding competition to be a part of. “It’s a very competitive competition, and a great one for Young to be involved with,” he said. “It was good only having to travel as far as Canberra. In the Riverina competition we had to travel further, so it was good to not have to rack up as many kilometres.” “I think it was also beneficial to our players to play against city based clubs as well, which are generally stronger than the rural ones we used to play against.” Wills said his men would now take a break from rugby until resuming for preseason training later this year.
