New Owner for Mitsubishi New Young Mitsubishi dealer Jamie Harden says the great respect that Young Mitsubishi has had over a long period of time is what enticed him to purchase the business. Mr Harden, who famously owns Harden Geelan Holden at the top of the town in Young, officially acquired Young Mitsubishi on Monday August 15, and has kept the same name for the dealership. But Mr Harden paid great tribute to retiring Young Mitsubishi dealers John and Jane Bokkerink, whose family has run the dealership for many years. He said the respect they had given to their business over a long period of time created a great opportunity for his business to acquire it. “John and Jane Bokkerink have had Young Mitsubishi for a very long time, and

before that, Eric Smith, Jane’s father, was the original dealer principal, when it was called ‘Smith and Mark’s’,” he said. “After discussions with John and Jane that they were interested to retire, the opportunity for Harden Geelan to purchase the business came around, and it allows us to extend our business and give our customers more choice.” Mr Harden said he was now looking to do some renovations to upgrade the facilities to “modernise” the franchise. “We’ll do this with a view of looking after customers and creating a great experience moving forward with a new product and modern facility, and streamlining the business internally and utilising upgraded management systems. We’re looking at efficiencies,” he said. By Joshua Matic

“Can’t Wait for School” Preparing to transition your child from home and/or an early childhood setting into primary school can be an emotional time for parents and children. The educators in Young recognise this and network regularly to ensure the schools and early childhood settings have an open and productive relationship. The YES group (Young Early Childhood Services) have planned an evening for parents of preschool age children, heading to school in 2017 or 2018. This evening will include presentations on the important aspects of the transition to school process and what parents can do to help their child. This evening will be held at the Young Services and Citizens Club on Thursday 25th August at 7pm. FROM THE HILLTOPS ADMINISTRATOR Wendy Tuckerman

The Canberra Region Joint Organisation is comprised of member Councils who work cooperatively on issues of mutual interest, in conjunction with the ACT Government. As representatives of Hilltops Council, myself and General Manager Anthony McMahon will be attending the ACT Government and CBRJO Forum this Friday, 19 August. The agenda includes tourism opportuni-

ties, export and freight prospects, regional procurement opportunities and joint advocacy to the Federal Government. One of Hilltops greatest advantages is the opportunities that exist for tourism and economic development. There will be discussion regarding the arrival of direct international flights between Singapore, Canberra and Wellington and the direct benefits for the Hilltops region. International flights into Canberra opens the Canberra Region and all regions surrounding it up to increased tourism and the capability to develop export markets and increase freight activity into and out of the Canberra Region. This will require improved road and rail infrastructure.

Through joint organisations, opportunities exist to deliver projects across Council boundaries by identifying areas in which shared procurement will deliver cost savings and an exciting pilot procurement project will be discussed. Finally, joint advocacy to the Federal Government is another benefit to being a member of a joint organisation. There will be engagement with the ACT Government on a number of key commitments, including the upgrade to the Barton Highway, a crucial transport link to our region. I look forward to providing the Hilltops communities with updates on what benefits we can expect to see through our membership in this regionally significant joint organisation.

Millard Centre Prepares for Centenary One of Young’s most iconic buildings turns 100 next year, but the building’s owners are already planning how to celebrate the occasion. The Millard Centre, Young town centre’s tallest building by number of stories, will celebrate its centenary in spring next year. While it has been many decades since it was a hustling and bustling department store, the building is still in use, with Robynette Fabric Salon and a number of other small businesses calling it home. Robynette Fabric Salon also hosts workshops from time to time, and in recent years, this has also helped to keep people coming into the building. The building is currently owned by Robynette Fabric Salon co-founder Janette Tiedemann and her husband Len, and they are the parents of current manager of Robynette Joy Dawe, who also has much to do

with the maintenance of the building. Mrs Dawe said while it was not actually known which date was the Millard Centre’s 100th birthday, it would still be celebrated as it should be. “Our records suggest it’s somewhere between October and December 1917, and we plan to have a special dinner, and a big textiles weekend, as well as our annual Christmas markets,” she said. Mr and Mrs Tiedemann have not always owned the Millard Centre, with the Millard family - famous in Young between the 1800s and 1900s - constructing it, and running the department store Millard’s Emporium. Ownership then transferred from the Millard’s to a syndicate in the 1980s, and with the Tiedemann’s being the only members of the syndicate left, they have responsibility of the building. QUESTION of the week

What has been your favourite moment in the Olympics so far?

My favourite part has been the success that the men’s equestrian eventing team had. I also like what Kyle Chalmers did in winning his first gold medal - Joy Daw.

IMAGE: Garage Sale Trail founders Andrew Valder and Darryl Nichols.

Boorowa Joins Garage Sale Trail Boorowa and Hilltops Region households, schools and community groups are set to join hundreds of thousands of people across the country on Saturday 22nd October as part of national reuse, community and sustainable living movement, Garage Sale Trail. Started in 2010, Garage Sale Trail has grown from a grass roots event to a program powered by over 150 councils nationally. By organising communities around Australia to host and shop at garage sales on one big day, Garage Sale Trail aims to encourage reuse, unite communities, create awareness around the issues of illegal dumping, provide a platform for fundraising and inspire creativity. Administrator Wendy Tuckerman, said the Hilltops Council is proud to be making Garage Sale Trail happen locally to provide residents with a fun way to declutter, meet peo-

ple from the local area and uncover some unique bargains. “Garage Sale Trail is a simple idea that encourages people to consider how things can be reused whilst also providing an opportunity to raise money. The idea of passing on what you don’t want to a new home is truly a great form of sustainability.” Garage Sale Trail Co-Founder Darryl Nichols says that creativity, self-expression and ‘good stuff’ have always been an important part of the Garage Sale Trail initiative. “We absolutely love the unexpected interpretations of garage sales that we see on the day.” Last year saw 350,000 participants get involved with almost 3 million items listed for sale at over 13,000 garage sales across the country. On the day, the average household sale made $300, while group sales made $650.

It was great to see Kyle Chalmers win his first gold medal at just 18 years of age - Liz Barrett.

Our women’s rugby sevens team were unstoppable, and it was great to see them win the first rugby sevens gold medal - Ross Everdell.

A Tribute From Lui’s Family

IMAGE: Stunt jumping will be a part of this year’s Kite Festival.

School Workshops to be Held in Kite Festival Lead Up Harden Kite Festival Committee Publicity Officer Julie Dunstan says school kite-making workshops will help local children get into the spirit of kite flying, in the lead up to October’s Harden Kite Festival. The Harden Kite Festival is in its 11th year, and is one of Harden-Murrumburrah’s biggest annual events. This year’s festival will take place at the Harden Picnic Race Course on Saturday October 15th, from 11am to 5pm. Kite-making workshops will be held next month to help local students make and fly their own kites during the festival, with Murrumburrah Public School, Trinity Catholic School and Bunyip Preschool coming on board with these workshops. Bunyip Preschool will join in with Trinity Catholic School’s workshop on September 20, while Murrumburrah Public School will have its own workshop the following day.

Mrs Dunstan said the school workshops were aimed at teaching students about kites and about the festival. “The hope is that the students will make their own kites, and then fly them during the kite competition at the festival,” she said. “We have a professional kite maker from Sydney coming down to run the workshops, so it’s a great opportunity for our students.” This year’s festival won’t just feature the kite flying competition, with a stunt jump being the main attraction. The festival will also have live music, a rock-climbing wall, face painting, balloon twisting, and around 50 market stalls. Eight hundred dollars in prize money will be up for grabs in the kite competition, and entry to the festival will just be a gold coin donation. Volunteers are also being sought after for the festival.

During May this year Gino, Joey and I suffered the worst news any family could be delivered when we suddenly and tragically lost our loved son and brother Lui Polimeni. Lui was a new member of the Gundagai Tigers’ under 16s team, playing in the Sullivan Cup. From the start of the season Lui was dedicated and determined, he loved his coach, his teammates and the Gundagai Tigers football club. Lui was so accepted at this great club and it is a huge tribute to him and his beautiful character. This has not only been an immense loss for us. We feel the sincere pain from the members at the club and wider community. For us to see 1800 people at Lui’s funeral was overwhelming and sad as well as humbling. We acknowledge and appreciate it so much. People from all over the area have been doing their own fundraising. We are totally overwhelmed with the love and support. We have been told the money has come from Tigers players, other football clubs, community members holding their own raffles, the NRL and CRL, children with $1 or more, adults with whatever they can give and one community member who made a considerable donation. We are also grateful for The Harden Hawks’ and Boorowa Bushrangers’ love and support. They fundraised for Ronald McDonald house where we found some comfort at our worst time. Nine of Lui’s friends travelled back to Canberra with me last Thursday to present them with $10,000. There is now a plaque in Lui’s memory on the corporate donation tree at the front door of Ronald McDonald House. We will be forever proud of Lui and forever grateful to the extraordinary community we live in. Thank you. Jenny Polimeni

At this time of year, it is very common to be facing the symptoms of hayfever. The weather is warming up, we have had a great wet winter bringing trees in to bloom and you generally want to be outside more. However, if you are a sufferer of hayfever, do you know exactly what causes your reaction and how best to treat them? Hayfever is an allergic reaction to environmental allergens such as pollens, dust mite, moulds and animal hair that directly affects the nose. Although people do suffer from hayfever in the spring months, not all hayfever occurs within this period. Unfortunately for some, perennial allergic rhinitis occurs all year round and can be triggered at any time. The symptoms of hayfever can include, sneezing, a runny or blocked nose, itchy ears, nose and throat, red, itchy or watery eyes and even headaches. In some cases, the symptoms of hayfever can be so severe that a person can’t sleep or concentrate, and may feel fatigued, having flu like symptoms or just generally unwell. So what happens to you when you are experiencing the effects of hayfever? Your nose acts as a filter. The tiny hairs and mucus that line the nasal passages trap dust, pollens and other microscopic particles. A person with hayfever is allergic to some of the particles that get trapped in the nose, such as pollen.

An allergic reaction means the immune system treats a harmless substance as if it is dangerous, and launches an ‘attack’. The nasal passages become inflamed and more mucus is produced. In order to tackle hayfever symptoms, the experts have put some suggestions together on how best to reduce your exposure to allergic conditions. • Check the pollen count forecast on television. Try to stay indoors if it’s a high count. • Stay indoors as much as possible in spring, on windy days or after thunderstorms. • In your garden, choose plants that are pollinated by birds or insects, rather than plants that release their seeds into the air. • Replace your lawn with types of artificial grass, bricked or paved areas. • Splash your eyes often with cold water to flush out any pollen. • Reduce your exposure to dust and dust mites, animals and animal hair or fur. There are medications available to help with the symptoms of hayfever. For the best advice ask your GP, healthcare practitioner or your local pharmacist.

Hilltops Agricultural Supplies Focuses on Being Proactive Hilltops Agricultural Supplies Branch Manager Steve Madge says he has set up his new business to supply clients with proactive and valuable customer service. Hilltops Agricultural Supplies is literally a brand new business, having opened its doors on August 1st at its premises up the hill on Bathurst Street in Murrumburrah. Mr Madge has set up the business with Merchandise Manager Stewart Reynish, and both men have extensive experience in the agriculture industry, having come from rural backgrounds on the land. The business provides service in all agricultural services, including animal health, chemicals, fertilizers, fencing, stock feeders and produce, and will deliver straight to the property. They can take orders over the phone for those that live a fair way out of town, and are always happy to deliver, but they are still open for clients to come and see them at their store as well. Mr Madge said he and Stewart set the business up to give clients true value in customer service; something he felt had been missing.

Why Hire a Landscape Designer? A garden is not just pretty flowers, lawn and a few trees. Those outdoor spaces which you really enjoy using have a lot of thought put into their site preparation, their layout, their plant selection and placement. These factors all need to be considered to ensure the success of a garden in the long term. It is ideal to seek advice from a landscape designer to help you create a garden that will grow, survive and thrive. You may have an established garden that needs rejuvenation or you may have a new home which requires a garden designed from scratch or you may just like to modify the garden you have. The advantage of hiring a landscaper designer is they can create a master landscape plan for your garden which will take in the entire space. Advantages of a Master Landscape Plan Develop in Stages – As your time and money allows but will still gives you a connection between all spaces, the areas will still flow and not be disjointed as you have a total plan for the entire site. Save Money - By having this document you will also eliminate wasting money in areas which won’t be needed until a later stage in the garden’s development. No backtracking - This plan should reduce the amount of back tracking you do in creating the garden and reduce the amount of waste you have to remove. Future Use - A master plan will also consider how you want the garden to look in the years to come. A Master Landscape Plan is an investment into the future of your outdoor space.

Agricultural drones are giving growers new ways to increase yield and reduce crop damage by being able to identify the problem before it can be seen by the naked eye. This cutting edge productivity improvement technology will be showcased at the YLAD Living Soils 14th Annual Field Day demonstrating to growers the potential for receiving valuable information quickly and cost effectively. YLAD Living Soils sees the value of introducing growers to information on the use of drones in agriculture so growers can understand what is the business value of using Drones and is bringing James Rennie from Australian UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) to speak at our Field Day. James is a natural resource scientist who has worked in the management and design of rivers, estuaries and wetlands. Australian UAV has completed over 2000 flights for commercial, private and government clients and is one of the country’s most experienced and professional drone operators. Drones can provide growers with three types of detailed views. First, seeing a crop from the air can reveal patterns that expose everything from irrigation problems to soil variation and even pest and fungal infestations that aren’t apparent at ground level. Second, airborne cameras can take multispectral images, capturing data from the infrared as well as the visual spectrum, which can be combined to create a view of the crop that highlights differences between healthy and distressed plants in a way that can’t be seen with the naked eye. Finally, a drone can survey a crop every week, every day, or even every hour, or as often as necessary to assess and monitor crop health. Come and see INSPIRE 1, the latest state of the art drone technology in flight at the YLAD Living Soils 14th Annual Field Day on Thursday September 15 in Young.

HILLTOPS REGION SPORT

Bases Loaded for Hilltops Baseball In less than two months’ time thirty-six participants will be converging on Young’s Sawpit Oval for the opening round of the Aussie T-Ball Program, run by the Hilltops Baseball Association. Wide eyed keen participants aged between 6 - 11, most picking up a baseball bat for the first time, will be taking aim at the 9 inch synthetic leather ball that sit atop the hitting tee waiting for the connection from the bat to send it flying outside the diamond, heading towards the outfield and with it the representation that Baseball, albeit in T-Ball version, has returned to the Hilltops Shire region. The ten week program features six teams known as the Brumbies, Gladiators, Sluggers, Tigers, Wasps and Wolves who will play over six-inning matches that last just one-hour, each Friday afternoon at Young’s Sawpit Gully Oval. The players, from all walks of life, all age groups and varying skill levels, come together in the fun, exciting, fast-paced, yet all-inclusive sporting code. Taking turns at different positions on the field, rotating in position every new inning and all batting at different locations throughout the match, the children will work together to get their team mates home and their team on the scoreboard. Registrations for the Aussie T-Ball program have been opened for a little over two weeks and the response from parents and children has seen places for the inaugural season snapped up quickly to the point that less than ten positions remain available. “It has been an outstanding success,” General Manager Brendon Meynell says.

IMAGE: The Hilltops T-Ball is a fantastic all inclusive sport.

“The fact that you can have absolutely zero previous sporting skills and come and take part in a fun competition like this I think is one of the major draw cards.” The decision was made early by the Hilltops Baseball Association to cap participation numbers at thirty-six in order to allow all children to have the opportunity for oneon-one hands on coaching from the trained coaching staff that the Association alongside Baseball New South Wales have been bringing up to scratch.

Upon registration, the children receive an Aussie T-Ball participants pack valued at over $150, all participants will also receive a Certificate and Medallion of Participation and with every player that registers they go in the draw to win a Canberra Cavalry ABL shirt or cap. With so limited places available parents are encouraged to act fast to secure one of the remaining positions for their child by visiting http://www.hilltopsbaseball.com.

HILLTOPS REGION SPORT

IMAGE: The Boorowa Goldies went down in their Plate Final clash against Batemans Bay, 28-16, last Saturday at the Boorowa Showground.

Goldies Proud Despite Going Down in Plate Final Boorowa Goldies Captain/Coach Marty Corcoran says it was a remarkable achievement to make this year’s South Coast Monaro rugby union competition Plate Final, despite going down in the grand final. The Goldies, who finished sixth overall in the competition, hosted the fifthplaced Batemans Bay Boars in the Plate Final last Saturday, and despite leading at half time, went down 28-16. The Plate Final is a minor grand final in the South Coast Monaro competition that sees lower-placed finalists go head to

head, similarly to how a repo charge round in other sports works. But just to get that far was a pleasant surprise for Corcoran, who earlier this year feared the Goldies may not even be able to put a team together. “We were struggling to get a team together earlier in the year, and because it took a little bit to get enough players together, at one stage, we looked like we’d have to pull out of the competition,” he said. “But a few old players came back to us to

PLAY BOWLS WHILE THE SUN SHINES. After 8 weeks of bad weather, the Ladies of Young WBC stepped out onto the green for a game in the sun. Young Women’s Bowling Club saw visitors from Harden and Grenfell joining them for their Social day on Tuesday, and what a day it was with perfect conditions for bowls. Everyone enjoyed their game and all were getting in practice for Wednesday at Cootamundra Ex Services Club, Saturday at Cootamundra Country Club and our own Versatility Day at the end of August.

play, and once the community rallied a little bit, more players came to join us, and we were able to field a side.” “The community spirit and pride in Boorowa definitely got us over the line, and I’m proud to represent such a great town.” The Goldies went on to win six games and lose seven this year, but in beating Batemans Bay in the first week of semifinals, they qualified for the Plate Final. Batemans Bay had to win a preliminary final the following week to book their place against Boorowa at the Boorowa Showground, but were able to beat them this time around. The Goldies started the game well, and went out to a half time lead, but the momentum shifted in the middle of the second half according to Corcoran. “We were unlucky and picked up two serious injuries. One player broke his arm, and another broke his thumb. Talk about putting your body on the line,” he said. “Those players put in a great effort and it was unlucky to lose them. Unfortunately they weren’t able to make an overseas trip on Monday as a result as well.” “Once we lost those guys it was pretty tough for us. We played really well in the first half, but take nothing away from Batemans Bay. They out-enthused us for the rest of the game and deserved to be the winners.” Corcoran said overall his men blew away all expectations with their season, and looked forward to getting back on the field next year. He thanked all of the support from the community, and everyone that donned a Goldies jersey this year. Meanwhile, the Boorowa Goldies will host its end of year presentation night on Saturday August 27 at 6.30pm, at the Top Pub in Boorowa. By Joshua Matic
