Bowling Club Gets A Makeover The Canowindra Bowling Club is currently receiving an upgrade, all thanks to the generous hard work of Deli Lama’s Tommy Jeffs, members of the Bowling Club and the support of the community. The new crockery and new tables have arrived, and the kitchen is in the process of a complete overhaul after the success of the Mother’s Day Fundraiser last month. The next event raising funds for the Canowindra Bowling Club will be a Curry Night prepared by the Bowling Club and Tommy Jeffs to raise money for new curtains in the function room. A variety of beautiful home curries ranging in heat and flavour will be on offer, as well as chutneys, yoghurts, rice, pappadams and naan bread, with lovely English trifles to finish off.

Live music from local musicians and a surprise guest appearance will be the entertainment, and tickets are only $25. Don’t miss out on this great deal; round up all your friends and book your seat early for an evening of music and food culture in support of the community. Tickets are available at Deli Lama and must be picked up and paid for by Wednesday July 1st. “We need 150 people for this event so we need Canowindra to support it,” said Tommy Jeffs. “As everyone knows, these events are really good for Canowindra and the Club is going to look fabulous when it’s finished.” Down the track, there are plans in the pipeline for an Italian Night that will raise money for new carpet. Dear Editor, We would like to take this opportunity to extend our gratitude for your contribution to the Julie Simpson Motor Neurone Disease Fundraiser, held on May 8th 2015. The fundraising evening was attended by approximately 50 people, with goods and services being donated from 34 businesses across the communities of Tottenham, Trangie, Forbes, Dubbo, Parkes, Canowindra and Condobolin. There were also a number of cash donations received from generous businesses and individuals. The event was a fantastic example of community spirit and of human kindness. We are pleased to report that our fundraising goal of $5000 was well and truly surpassed, a total of $12,741.22 being raised, with donations still being received. The support received has been overwhelming and will go a long way to assist Julie’s family in providing her with all important ongoing care and in maintaining her quality of life as the disease continues to rapidly progress.

Once again, our heartfelt thanks for your kindness and generosity in supporting our cause. Kind regards, Nikki Simpson-Baker & The Simpson Family

Snippets... postponed for 1 week and rescheduled for Wednesday June 24th. The agenda for the meeting will include representation from ANTY (Amalgamation – No Thank You) and an update from Michael Payten on the dam project. If you want to know the answer to any question, visit the Deli Lama Table of Knowledge. 3 local men having coffee on Monday morning informed the Phoenix that they were not the Local Men’s Coffee Club, but the Table of Knowledge. Sam Brand is going bald! The 11 year old Canowindra Public School student is shaving his head for the Give Me 5 For Kids Foundation, aiming to raise $500 for the cause. The shave will happen on Sunday June 28th at Cargo football ground at 1:45pm. All funds raised will be donated to the Orange Hospital Children’s Ward. Donations can be made at the Cargo General Store and at Canowindra Public School. Team Canowindra are hosting a Disco Party for primary school aged kids in the school holidays on Thursday July 9th from 5-7pm at Moorbel Hall. There will be awesome music by DJ Michael Britt, lots of food and prizes, and kids can also purchase temporary tattoos, glow sticks and slushies on the night. It is sure to be a great party. Tickets are $8, available at Canowindra Newsagency, and include a sausage sandwich, popper and lollipop. Benefits go towards the Chris O’Brien Lifehouse, a world-class not-for-profit integrated cancer treatment centre in Camperdown NSW. The Canowindra Business Chamber Meeting has been cancelled this week due to the State of Origin. The meeting has been

Calare primary schools have the chance to benefit from a $100 million Sporting Schools program in a plan by the Government to get children more active and healthy. There is only a week left for primary schools in the region to apply for funding to join thousands of schools across the country. The program expands on sporting opportunities available to kids before, during and after school hours. “Sport is a great way to develop their skills in leadership, teamwork and community spirit,” said Federal MP John Cobb. Applications for funding close Friday 26th June. More information can be found on the Sporting Schools website www.sportingschools.gov.au Cabonne residents take a bow! “Cabonne residents have demonstrated loud and strong their community spirit and passion to retain the quality of their village lifestyle and well-being, by turning out in the hundreds at public meetings to protest against a proposed merger,” says Marj Bollinger, spokesperson for ANTY (Amalgamation – No Thank You). An Orange meeting last week drew a crowd of under 30 people, including Council employees, media representatives and six interested ANTY supporters. “How can Paul Toole let that level of community support be eaten up by a city?” Marj said.

Tommy Jeffs’ famous Christmas in July windows are back again this year, and Tommy is calling on all shopkeepers around town to get on board, to create another fantastic atmosphere on Gaskill Street like last year. See Tommy at Deli Lama for more information. The Government’s small business package passed through the Senate this week allowing small businesseses to claim an immediate tax deduction on every asset under $20,000 purchased since Budget night until the end of June 2017. Small businesses will also benefit from a 1.5 percent tax cut from 1st July if their turnover is less than $2 million. “This will greatly assist farmers with drought preparedness and cash flow,” said MP Angus Taylor, “and encourage investment in productivity enhancing assets.” Oops! Some local businesses based out of Canowindra in our neighbouring village of Cargo were also named as Finalists in the 2014 Cabonne Daroo Business Awards and were missed in last week’s article. The outstanding Cargo businesses were Megan Foster Photographer, Megan Claire Floral Design, Rustic Notions, Free Spirit Wax Creations and Leanne Pearce Dog Wash.

6342 2293 IMAGE: The Mitchell String Quartet will perform at Baroquefest 2015

Baroquefest 2015 A three day festival will be played by two major ensembles and other musicians from the Central West region and beyond between the 16-18th of October 2015, celebrating a resurgence of Baroque music. The festival will feature “Ironwood”, a string quartet from Sydney who have grown a following in Australia and overseas over the past decade. Mitchell String Quartet, made up of professional musicians associated with Bathurst’s Mitchell Conservatorium, will be joined by Dubbo’s Matthew Gately playing trumpet, soprano Helen Barnett from Orange, and Bathurst harpsichordist Tracey Callinan; a combination sure to “bring the sounds of 17th and 18th centuries back to life”. Other artists include international oboist Laith Ismail and NSW based violinist Andrew Baker. Baroquefest is an event organised by Canowindra Fine Music, a committee established with help from the Age of Fishes Museum earlier this year. “It is quite a coup to get a commitment from a group of this calibre to perform in a town as small as Canowindra,”

said Richard Statham, Chairman of Canowindra Fine Music. A variety of performances demonstrating “musical virtuosity” will be held at the Age of Fishes Museum, All Saints Church and Memorial Park, with a final concert at Wallington Winery catered by Canowindra@ Home. Companies and individuals will be offered the choice of purchasing specific concert tickets or from gold, silver and bronze sponsorship packages which include a range of benefits including priority seating, printed programs signed by the musicians, a Baroquefest satchel with logo, Rosnay wines, commemorative wine glasses and anodised monogrammed drink bottles. Seats will be limited so mark it on your calendar, save the date and book your tickets early. Don’t miss out on this exciting opportunity to experience some of music history’s greatest masterpieces from musical greats like Bach and Handel right here in the beautiful surroundings of Canowindra.

When the temperatures outside drop, the inside of your house can feel cold, stark and empty, especially after a long day at work. Bring warmth and style back into your home this winter with these cosy home décor suggestions: Add texture: Use blankets, cushions and throws in cheerful colours and daring patterns to brighten the atmosphere of a dreary room. Transform your entire bedroom’s atmosphere from dull den into a stylish haven of sleep by layering textured bedding, velvet pillows, knitted blankets and embroidered details. Put down a fluffy floor rug over bare tiles or floorboards, adding warmth and texture underneath your feet – a great way to keep some heat in and brighten a room for winter. The classic sheepskin rug is another great way to add a textured element to any room, as well as adding more of that much needed warmth. They look great on the couch as a throw, and are a soft, cosy place to put your feet as you get out of bed on a wintery morning. Maximise your natural light: Use whatever natural light you have available to your advantage by using mirrors on blank walls, above the fireplace or opposite windows. By reflecting natural light the space in your home will be extended. Using mirrors with bold or textured frames can add a nice dramatic effect. Layer up: Increase the cosiness of a room with layers. Using simple slip covers to cover your dining chairs can add warmth and style to any neutral dining room. Get covers that are easy to take off and put through the washing machine. Block the chilly window drafts with thick drapes in a solid colour which can flatter patterned shades. These can be replaced with thin drapes or removed altogether when the weather warms up again. Get colourful: Mix it up with a collection of unique and stylish cushions and pillows that accent the existing décor of the room. Pick a colour scheme and compliment it with cushion covers flaunting patterns and a thoughtful variety of hues. As the hearth becomes the biggest focus of your living space, give your fireplace a facelift with a lick of paint and an ornate fire screen which will add fresh style and warmth to the room.

There will be categories for youths, sportspeople, community contributors and elders in the inaugural awards. “Nominating someone is as easy as fillingout an application form and returning it to Cowra Council by Monday, June 29,” Cr West said. “Please consider nominating a community member or group who have significantly enhanced life in Cowra Shire this year.” Winners will be announced at the end of NAIDOC Week at a special dinner on Saturday July 11th at Cowra Bowling Club. Where are you from? Sydney. I’ve been here for 28 years after I fell in love with the place when I was visiting friends. What do you love about Canowindra? The people, the countryside and the community spirit. What is your occupation? On weekends I do a pop up shop of Nordic clothing for a friend and fencing during the week with my husband. What is your biggest fear? Heights, but I love flying. If you won the lotto, how would you spend it? Help out all my family, take the pressure off my hardworking husband and invest enough to be happy and never work again. Where is your favourite place in the world? The Mediterranean; the ocean and the European flavour of people. What was it like being an extra on Strangerland? It was fabulous! I was elated – and a star is born! Is there a future for you in film? I’d love to! Who inspires you the most? Rod Stewart, Michael Jackson and Joan Collins who is so much like my sister Michelle.

Monitor Your Electronic Pockets It has been revealed that residents in New South Wales could be losing up to $190 million a year to ‘Electronic Pickpockets’, following a study into criminal activity surrounding electronic money theft. The survey carried out by ARMOURCARD, an Australian company wanting to prevent wireless skimming, revealed over one in seven residents in NSW have either been a victim of electronic skimming or knows someone who has. The report also revealed that over a fifth of residents in NSW are completely unaware this crime even exists. Even worse, over half of the residents surveyed from NSW admitted they would not notice if the thefts were small; the average adult said they could lose over $30 from their bank account and not notice. “Wireless technologies such as ‘Tap and Go’ have made life easier for shoppers and retailers,” said Tyler Harris, Co-Founder and Director of ARMOURCARD. “However, the same technology has become a target for criminals looking to exploit for personal gain.” Electronic skimming is a type of credit card fraud where criminals steal your card details using radio frequency identification or near field communication technologies. Community Notices

Curtains Open For Canowindra Performers A brave crowd of about 60 people were at the opening night of the Canowindra Community Players performance of “My Life – A Double Take” at Canowindra Services Club on Friday night. “You never know what you’re going to get on opening night,” said Anthony Hamer, who wrote the play. “The crowd were very watchful and contemplative to start off with. The Saturday night crowd were involved and vocal, which we like.” There are 17 pieces of music throughout the play and all characters sing at one point in an overall performance that Anthony hopes local people can identify with. Comic elements and eclectic music accompany a thoughtful storyline which makes the audience think. “We are doing it for the people. We want to get people out and about; to engage the community in something different,” said Anthony. A different community group waits tables each night to receive a donation and all money raised by the Sunday Matinee goes towards Give Me 5 For Kids to help fund the Orange Hospital Children’s Ward. Tickets are $35 at Saffi and include a main meal and desert. Sunday Matinee tickets are $10. The play will finish this weekend. By Rosi Broom

Food Labelling Have Your Say! An online survey is open, allowing everyone to have their say on clearer ‘country of origin’ food labelling, and Government representatives are calling on the community to give feedback on proposed new food labels. The survey was created to help design the Government’s new labelling system after consultation with food growers, processors and retailers. They plan to “implement a clearer, more direct system for food labelling that will give consumers the information they want in a way that is easy to read and understand.” Federal MP Angus Taylor said “Australians don’t want to pay a lot for their food so the answer is not in more detailed and expensive food labelling. The ultimate answer is electronic labelling. You just scan the product and the detail will come up on your smartphone.” “I recognise that people want simple and more logical labels, so they can make an informed decision about the food they buy at their local supermarket,” said MP John Cobb. “I encourage all those in Calare to jump online and fill out a country of origin food labelling community survey at www.industry.gov. au/cool or request a hardcopy by calling 13 28 46.” By Rosi Broom

Rugby League

Canowindra Tigers lived up to all expectations in a clash against the Eugowra Eagles on Sunday. The Eagles started out on fire and in no time had a 12-0 lead, but the Tigers held their game together and remained in the fight with heavy exchanges in defence. Eugowra extended their lead to 18 points before the break, but in the second half it was all about the Tigers in one of the greatest comebacks in recent times. The Tigers lifted their intensity in defence and started wearing the opposition down. With the forward pack making their mark on the game, the Tigers took the lead 24-18 and looked in control with all players putting in 100%. The Eagles began to close in on the Tigers but in the closing minutes of the game, the Tigers were awarded a penalty to extend the lead and take the win.

Junior Rugby League

The Tiger Cubs played their best game of the year against Eugowra on the weekend who are undefeated this season. The players had a positive outlook, showing great determination and control and Eugowra realised they had a battle on their hands. Canowindra received a penalty 15 meters out, taking their lead to 12-0. The Tigers demonstrated their best defensive effort of the year and really put the pressure on the Eugowra team. The half time score was 13-0 in the Tigers’ favour, but the outlook of the second half was a tough test for both teams. Eugowra quickly hit back to narrow the gap and stayed on the attack for the rest of the game, and the Tigers couldn’t hold the Eagles out. With only 19 minutes left, it was a test of

both physical and mental strength. The Tigers began to make simple mistakes in possession, giving too much ball to Eugowra who scored out wide to lead for the first time in the match. Eugowra continued to widen the score, and after an altercation the Eagles moved the ball wide to run in a late try. The final score was 24-13.

League Tag

The Canowindra Tigresses were a huge pack on the weekend with 18 players. With a quick first half the Tigresses defence managed to keep the Eugowra girls wide, but it wasn’t strong enough to keep them out. Eugowra had 20 points on the board by half time and even though Canowindra demonstrated some great attacking sets, they were not able to score before half time. The Tigresses dominated in the second half of the match, but only one try was scored in that time. Everyone gave 100% in the second half but unfortunately the girls couldn’t get the points. Player’s player went to Hayley White and Alicia Earsman.

5 Pennant players went to Lithgow on Saturday to play against Lithgow City in a nailbiting game. Despite the points scored by Canowindra, the missed opportunities took their toll and the team went down by 3 on the board. In the team’s next game, Canowindra needed a far-fetched 6 to win, but Bargo played tactics and knocked Canowindra’s hopes out of the park. In their last game against Lawson, the competition favourites, Canowindra dragged themselves onto the green for the inevitable; a demonstration of Lawson’s formidable skills. Everyone enjoyed themselves despite not bringing home the flag and are grateful to the supporters who went to cheer them on.
