A Fitting Tribute To Ben Mitchell –
Canowindra Pythons Fly High To Win On The Day Between 800 and 1000 people turned out on Saturday at Cudal Sports Ground to honour Ben Mitchell, who is remembered as a ‘top bloke’ and a ‘great mate’ by all who knew him. This number was reflective to the respect that Ben augured both in life and today. The figure raised is in the vicinity of $12,000 and will be used to build an all-weather shade structure at Dean Park in Ben’s name. Ben’s partner Ange and children Hamish, Skye and Harriet were the most important thing in Ben’s life and consequently the Committee will be directing significant donations to Cudal Public School and the Cudal Community Childrens Centre. Special mention should be made to all who
supported the day, including the many volunteers, Lions Clubs from Cargo, Cudal and Canowindra, the P & C Association, and Cudal Bowling Club. Also Canowindra Pythons who gave up their home game to support their former arch rivals but more importantly, a great mate. People travelled from all over to support the day with many past players taking part in the Cudal Reds versus Cudal Greens match, where the No. 8 player was the Player of the Match. Legendary Umpire Pat Coughlan controlled this game and there was a a huge sigh of relief when the final whistle blew from all those who had trained so hard for this game. By Cheryl Newsom

Dear Editor, Canowindra Phoenix June 27th. In relation to the Belubula dam project. There is only one way for people to store water locally at scale, and that is as ‘in ground water’ away from evaporation. (Or in a tank at the house). ‘Nil-run-off’ prevents floods, wild fires, erosion and desertification. Australia does not need infrastructure to increase production and increase employment. What we do need is ‘Eco-Structure’ that nature builds for all of us and less industrial thinking in our natural world. Why do people in our modern age believe in advertising and propaganda that is a ‘con trick’ and not believe in nature that only works for human benefit? Agricultural science has failed as a science based upon ‘human logic’, for it is an industrial process designed to supply an industrial world, not people. Farmers cannot succeed in their business using agricultural practices because all agricultural practices degrade their production base --their land and water system. At farm scale or at Belubula valley scale

there is one way to hydrate the land, increase soil, increase plant species, increase animal species, increase wild life, increase water availability and stabilise climate. And that is to use the living practices of both plants and animals together on the land to re-create “Habitat in Common”, recycle MORE of what we grow, to grow MORE of what we need to sell to feed our family first with a surplus over for others. That’s farming naturally. In this way we will ‘farm’ the resources of our land instead of exporting farm resources as EROSION to somewhere else. ‘Farming’ using natural processes, as the natural ecology working (nature’s logic) is a highly profitable business because it has a FREE supply chain. Land owners who don’t know that, cannot ‘farm’ by natural increase. Industrial thinking has exploited our once self-functioning Belubula valley as an ecosystem (as well as our continent) and it is time we all began doing whatever we can do for ourselves on our own land, without spending money or using government funding and work with nature instead of destroying our future in our own land. When will people stop learning only from people and start learning only from nature. Species, soil and water are FREE and ‘selfreplacing’ in a functional land but not in a dysfunctional land that modern day industrial man has made of our Australian continent. Cabonne Council has lodged its Fit for the Future submission with the NSW Government, seeking to continue as a stand-alone council. All residents of Cabonne are invited to have their say about the proposed amalgamation of Cabonne Council. A new petition is available at Canowindra Bowling Club, Canowindra Golf Club, Canowindra Services Club, Canowindra Pharmacy, Canowindra Newsagency and other business across Cabonne. Cowra Motor Registry will temporarily close for refurbishment from 4pm on Friday 3rd of July. It will reopen in late August at the same location as a Service NSW centre. Transactions can be made online at www.service. nsw.gov.au or by visiting the temporary motor registry at 15 Vaux St, Cowra.
With the announcement by Andrew Gee in the State Budget of $2 million being allocated to Cabonne Council to build extra overtaking lanes on Cargo Road, we asked some of the locals who travel this road daily for their comments:
Jess Ware, commented: I travel the Cargo Rd to Orange and back at least 3 times a week and have seen many near misses. On Friday, on the Cargo Rd there was a single vehicle accident (thankfully no one was seriously injured). A huge thumbs up to Mick Sheehy from Cowra , who was the first in the scene before me to assist the driver & call emergency services. Anything that makes the trip to orange safer is definitely welcome.
Ben Easter, commented: Ben Easter, one of the Canowindra Pythons players who regularly travels Cargo Road said: There aren’t nearly enough passing lanes on the road and traffic does get congested, particularly if there is a slow driver. It will be safer and easier to get to Orange within required time frames.

Help Build A Miracle House For The Read Triplets A group of Canowindra residents can be found training regularly at the Fitness Path in preparation for their assault in the City2Surf event to be held on 9th August. They were certainly a sight for sore eyes on Tuesday morning and some even managed to show some good ‘ol’ legs, which were probably on show for the first time in a long while. Canowindra residents have always been very supportive of the Triplets for which the family is very appreciative. Anne Ward, one of the organisers of the charity, said, “we are
inviting other interested people to join us in this fun run and raise funds to go towards building a miracle house for the triplets’ Also, we need sponsors to make this come to fruition. Details on how to sponsor us will be available soon.” In addition, there is talk of a practice ‘town2turf’ run for people who can’t come to Sydney, and this is proposed for the week before the City2Surf Fun run in August. To make a donation go to https:// give.everydayhero.com/au/raising-a-roof4-read-triplets
All community members are being invited to suggest names for the new bridge across the Lachlan River at Gooloogong. The $16.4 million bridge, which was opened in February, links Cowra and Cabonne Shires. ‘Cowra Council is calling on people to let them know what they would like this new bridge to be called’, Cowra General Manager, Paul Devery said. “This is a fantastic opportunity for someone to name a vital piece of community infrastructure. “There are a few general protocols around the naming of infrastucture that need to be followed, including a preference for Aboriginal and pioneer names and geographical names, with a disinclination for the names of living persons and overlong or commercial names,” Mr.Devery said. Submissions close on 31st July and can be forwarded by email to ddixon@cowra.nsw. gov.au

Incentives To Bring GP’s To Canowindra
Targeting Mental Health Among ‘Blue-Collar’ Men
GP’s working in Canowindra will receive up to $23,000 in higher incentive payments from 1 July 2015 in a bid to attract more GP’s to the community, an $11,000 increase from the previous system. Canowindra’s Dr Kumar welcomes the incentive. “Every bit of funding is good to attract doctors to the country area. Despite funding, we still have issues getting doctors out here. This might encourage people to come and work with us.” Federal MP Angus Taylor said “GP’s who practise in Canowindra will now receive an annual incentive payment of $23,000 if they work for five years locally, and $23,000 every year after that they continue to practise locally.” “The incentive payments start after two years of local practice and build up from $12,000 to $23,000,” Mr Taylor said. “We are continuing to work on broader systems of care incorporating trainee doctors, skilled doctors and visiting specialists, but attracting more GP’s and keeping GP’s for longer who are already working in rural towns is a vital piece of the puzzle.” According to Assistant Health Minister Fiona Nash, $50 million in GP incentive payments was being redirected to the smaller localities from 14 large regional cities with populations of more than 50,000. “It makes a lot more sense to use that money to attract doctors to areas with the greatest GP shortages,” Ms Nash said.
According to beyondblue, a not-for-profit organisation aiming to reduce stigma and increase awareness about anxiety and depression, nearly a third of men who are ‘bluecollar’ workers wouldn’t know what to do if they were struggling with depression or anxiety. More than a quarter of men would believe that these conditions are considered “soft” and many think that seeking out help for those conditions is a sign of weakness. The findings came from a survey carried out by global marketing company TNS and demonstrates the harmful concepts of masculinity that are affecting the mental health of many men. The survey engaged 300 men in blue-collar jobs and also found that while 86% of those surveyed believed talking about mental health is important and 85% believe others should speak to a GP if they’re struggling, only 49% of them would actually do that themselves. About a third of the men surveyed didn’t feel well-informed about the signs and symptoms of depression and anxiety, and 28% said they would turn to alcohol if they started experiencing those symptoms. beyondblue wants to tackle these attitudes with a revamped campaign adding some humour to a serious issue, and to show “bluecollar” men that feelings like depression and anxiety are nothing to be ashamed of, and support is available to them. “Davo’s Man Therapy will introduce Australia to a new mental health champion ‘Davo’, a larrikin tradie who doesn’t beat around the bush when it comes to mental health,” beyondblue announced recently. ‘Davo’ will direct men to www.mantherapy.gov.au where they can get a simple assessment, answers and advice regarding their mental health.

Health Smart Improving Referral Services for Older People Older people in the Western NSW Local Health District will find the ways in which they are referred to community support services changing very soon. From 1 July 2015, My Aged Care will become the new Contact Centre for older people to access these support services, aiming to provide a “one-stop-shop” to assess and refer aged people to those services within the community. These changes were introduced by the previous Commonwealth Government in 2012, and intend to create a more sustainable aged care system for future generations. The changes will see My Aged Care go from an information and referral service to the central intake point for access into the aged care system. This will include assessments by the new Regional Assessment Services for referral to entry-level home support services, comprehensive assessments by Aged Care assessment teams for referral to aged care, Transitional Aged Care and Home Care Packages. Jackie Corliss, a representative from Western NSW Local Heath District said “the new My Aged Care referral service has been set up to allow older people to access services in one place.” “My Aged Care will identify a person’s aged care needs for home support services, provide assessment services for older people and update client record information all in one place,” said Ms Corliss. “The new standardised screening and assessment process will improve the consumer experience and access to information and services in a more simplified system, also providing older people with more choice and better care.”
These reforms to aged care will also see the transition of the Home and Community Care Program (HACC) into the Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP) after July 1st. “Under the CHSP, older people will be able to access a wide range of services such as planned respite, delivered meals and domestic assistance,” said Ms Corliss. Older people, their families and their carers will also be able to make referrals through My Aged Care, either online (www.myagedcare. nsw.gov.au) or by phoning the Contact Centre on 1800 200 422. Consult with your GP for further information about this program.
Medinova Grand Opening Medinova Medical Centre held their Grand Opening on Thursday 25th of June. Cowra’s Mayor Bill West visited the centre for the opening and many health professionals from town helped by joining everyone at the opening lunch. This included the Cowra District Hospital Health Service Manager, physiotherapists, dentists, Headspace psychologists, an optometrist and Western Medicare local staff who give practice and support, among others. This month at Orange Civic Theatre, a fantastic company of actors will perform ‘Hamlet’, one of Shakespeare’s greatest tragedies. Hamlet is a detailed family portrait into the political landscape of a country furiously preparing for war without realising that the enemy lies within. “Hamlet is one of the most complete experiences theatre can provide – extraordinary poetry, intense passion, dazzling intelligence, terror, casual slaughter, friendship, humanity, great humour and great grief. Shakespeare casts his spell through the sheer scope and grandeur of this story - beginning with a dead man walking and ending with a stage littered with bodies,” Director Damien Ryan said. Hamlet is on stage at Orange Civic Theatre 10th-11th of July. Call 6393 8111 to book your tickets for this performance. Jane Sheldon, New York based and Sydney born soprano is touring the Central West with the Omega Ensemble with performances in Molong, Bathurst Lithgow and Forbes from 8th-12th of July. Where do you work? I own a gorgeous little fashion boutique in Canowindra called Saffi. Why did you go into retail? I needed a change from nursing and had always been interested in fashion. I wanted to challenge myself to start something completely new and build it up. How long have you lived in Canowindra? I grew up between Canowindra and Eugowra. I went to Sydney for university then moved around for 15 years between Sydney, Adelaide, Melbourne and overseas, then came back to live at our family farm in 2003. Favourite thing about Canowindra? I love the social and cultural diversity here in Canowindra, and I think it’s a rare quality for a country town. Do you have any hobbies? I studied Silversmithing and Jewellery Design in Melbourne, so that is my favourite hobby, although I hardly have time to do it anymore. Your worst habit? Procrastination Favourite place in the world? Apart from home, I really love Switzerland and Austria. If you won the lotto, how would you spend it? I’d spend it quickly! I’d take my boys on an overseas adventure, do some home reno’s, invest some for kids education, then help out some others less fortunate than us.

6 Steps To A Healthy Spine According to the Medical Journal of Australia, “80% of Australians will experience back pain at some point in their lives and 10% will experience significant disability as a result.” Back pain can be as simple as discomfort that limits our ease of movement to a chronic condition that stops us from being able to work. Our spine is capable of moving in six directions, forward, backward, sideways in both directions and turns in both directions. Mostly we only move it one way – forward. Most activities we do each day are a forward bend: sitting, walking, standing, even lying down are forward bends. This means we are always using the same muscles in the same ways, continually lengthening and shortening the same muscles. This is also why we end up with that unattractive hump in our upper back as we age. How is your back right now? Would you give it a 100% score today? If so great, let’s keep it that way. If not, these six simple movements every day will help to create better back health. Sit forward in a chair with your feet flat on the floor so you can create a right angle from ankle to knees to hips. 1. 1. Budget Perks For Calare
Funds Flow For Cranky Rock
In a massive $385 million investment delivering nearly 500 new or upgraded base stations in the implementation of their Black Spot Programme, the Federal Government is building eighteen new mobile base stations in the electorate of Calare. Federal MP John Cobb said “this is a great outcome for Calare, with a total of $10.16 million to be invested on new and improved mobile coverage in the area.” The NSW State Government will also invest in fixing 795 mobile phone black spots in regional communities, which Member for Orange Andrew Gee says will be a benefit for Cabonne. Eight additional mobile network towers will be rolled out in the Orange electorate to eliminate some of the states’ worst black spots. Another boost for Calare will be the $1.105 billion extra being made available to councils across Australia for much needed road upgrades as a part of the Roads to Recovery Programme over the next 2 years.
The NSW Government has now allocated a further $2 million in the 2015-16 Budget for the Cranky Rock Dam proposal. Member for Orange Andrew Gee says “one of the biggest handbrakes on economic growth in this country is Australia’s water security.” “While we don’t know how the feasibility study will turn out, I think it is very important that governments do all they can to secure country water supplies. Every option for water security needs to be assessed and followed through,” Mr Gee said. The NSW State Government began the search for a potential dam site in 2014, and Cranky Rock, located about 15km east of Canowindra was chosen from the 15 sites investigated in the Lachlan and Belabula catchments. The proposed dam could store up to 700 gigalitres of water and has the potential of increasing water security for central councils and other users throughout the Lachlan Valley. The proposed dam could also allow Carcoar Dam to be networked into Central Tablelands Water which would allow it to extend the overall network, and provide back-up drought supplies and secure water to towns which are currently beyond that network. The construction of a dam at Cranky Rock could have many benefits for the town of Canowindra, including the creation of hundreds of jobs during the construction phase, a more secure town water supply and major recreational perks. “The NSW Government will continue to consult closely with individuals and communities potentially impacted by the dam,” Mr Gee said.

Canowindra Sport cracks at goal until securing one off a penalty kick making the score 6-2. Getting another one on the board gave the whole team a boost and they started to play like a team again. It wasn’t long before Ashley smashed the ball through defense from half way offloading the ball to Becky to then set up Joanna Balcombe for a goal. With the score 6-3 Canowindra kept fighting with only10 minutes to go. Meg Austin made some good runs and attacked hard but unfortunately the whistle blew and sounded the end of the game. Canowindra High School have made a massive achievement to get to this level of the competition which hasn’t been done in years. Coach Mr Jones says, “20 more minutes and we could have had them, playing this game is a great experience as is it showed us what we need to do to play at a state level”. Canowindra Pythons take on their arch rivals and win. Saturday kicked off with the Walla Rugby which saw the Pythons take on the Cudal Cobras. Some great tries were made by Frazer Wythes, Lachlan Rice and Sam Breen but in the end the Pythons where defeated 5-3. The next game saw the old boys dust off their boots to play against each other all wearing Bens number 8. What was a friendly game soon turned competitive as the boys enjoyed getting a good tackle on one another. The old boys Red team came away with the win 10-5 although all were happy to be playing again in remembrance of a good mate. Anthony Harrison and David Chase where both awarded with best and fairest which made them remember their younger days. The main game took place afterwards which saw the Canowindra Pythons take on the Molong Magpies.” This would be one of the best games the Pythons have played for a while as everyone really played like a team”, Graham Rice Manager and former Coach said. Dan Bowd was first to make it over the line for the Pythons but was closely followed by two successful penalty kicks by Molong to make the score 6-5. The Pythons all worked together to secure another try as Craig Mckenzie pushed through defense. This made the score 12-6 after Ben Schaefer successfully converted. Some great work in the front row with Jacob Baker and Dean Schaefer making some strong tackles kept Molong out until half time. Molong came back fighting hard in the second half and scored. The Pythons weren’t giving up either as Luke Watt worked hard to put the Pythons back in their attacking half. Sean
Wyburn then scored next to the post getting the Pythons back in front 17-13 but not for long as Molong were over the line again. With 10 minutes to go tensions where rising in the crowd. A penalty was then awarded with Ben Schaefer converting and it wasn’t long before Ben Easter palmed off defense to score the winning try for the Pythons making the final score 27-18. 3 points and players player went to Luke Watt, 2 points to Ben Easter and 1 point each to Jacob Baker and Dean Schaefer.
