Fish Fossil Joins State Emblems Coinciding with the 60th Anniversary of the discovery of the Canowindra Fossil Fish site , a life-size 3D model of the newly-announced NSW Fossil Emblem Mandageria fairfaxi was unveiled at the Age of Fishes Museum on Friday 14 August. Dr Chris Yeats, Executive Director of Geological Survey of NSW, opened the event followed by an interesting and detailed talk from Dr Alex Ritchie, a palaeontologist who played a major role in the rediscovery and excavation of the Canowindra fossil site in 1993. Dr Zerina Johanson and Prof. Per Ahlberg, who both worked together on the Canowindra fish fossil studies then unveiled the model to an audience of around 40 attendees who visited from across the country and the world. Other guests on the day included past and

present volunteers, as well as members of the public from Canowindra who were involved from 1993 to the present day in the Age of Fishes Museum and the fossil excavation. “This is a hugely significant day for Canowindra, NSW and Australia,” Andrew Gee said. “We are yet to tap into the huge potential of this fossil site. It’s one of the most significant fossil finds in the world and we are very optimistic about the future of the site.” The Mandageria fairfaxi fossil was found in the 1993 excavation near Canowindra and is unique to NSW. It was named after a local creek and joins a list of existing NSW state emblems including the Kookaburra, the Platypus, the Blue Groper and the Black Opal. By Rosi Broom

Snippets... Don a daffodil! Friday 28 August is Daffodil Day and a stall will be available outside IGA selling daffodils, soccer balls, brooches and pens to raise money for cancer research, developing cancer prevention programs and providing patient support.

IMAGE: The Blood Bus was back in Canowindra this week.

The Red Cross Blood Bus was back in town this week to collect much needed blood donations to help save the lives of others. The majority of donated blood goes to people with cancer, as well as individuals who have suffered traumatic accidents, burns and people undergoing surgery. If you missed out on donating this time, don’t worry! The Blood Bus will return to Canowindra on Tuesday 17 November. Find out if you are eligible to donate at www.donateblood.com.au Science Hub was launched this week at the Age of Fishes Museum as part of Science Week 2015 to encourage students from schools in Canowindra, Cowra and surrounding districts to get more interested and involved in the art of science. In conjunction, a 3D hologram of the ancient Canowindra fish fossil was projected into the Belubula River; an event that was attended by over 200 people. “The projection was amazing,” says Warren Keedle from Age of Fishes, “and you could swear it was really swimming in the river!” Students also took part in workshops at the Age of Fishes held by palaeontologist Dr Alex Ritchie and 3D modelling artist Craig Walsh.

O’Shea’s Slide City is back on! Patience is a virtue for local kids and families that booked the downhill water slide for Youth Week in April with the slide scheduled to visit Cowra on Saturday 26 September. The slide starts at Saburo Nagakura Park and winds its way down-hill to Evans Street for more than 315 metres. Book tickets at events.ticketbooth. com.au/event/SlideCityAustralia From the Table of Knowledge: the Italians believe that an innuendo is an enema. Get your obscure questions answered at the Table of Knowledge at the Deli Lama on Monday mornings. Schools across Cabonne are being praised after most of the 19 schools in the Shire performed above average in literacy and numeracy, when compared to similar schools. Results from the NAPLAN testing ranged from substantially above average to average for almost all schools in Cabonne. Our students perform very well academically and in sport. “The contribution teachers and students from these schools make to our communities is invaluable,” Councillor Ian Gosper said. Retired farmer and grazier Ivan Traves was the kid who ran written messages from his school principal to author Kylie Tennant who was living at the Canowindra Hotel and writing “Tiburon”. He had the journey timed perfectly so he was back at school in time to greet the bell. Ivan moved to Mollymook to retire in the late 1970s. Thank you Tony

Allan and Debbie Symons sent in an update this week from Mt Isa in Queensland. “It is all about mining as the whole town is surrounded by huge mining ventures which butt right up to the city itself. Each morning and evening at the end of each work shift, they do the blasting,” Allan wrote. “We are off to Corella Dam tomorrow for three days to try and catch some Red Claw Crabs, then we will slowly wind our way over to Townsville.”

Amalgamation Update

IMAGE: Diane Slattery, Nancy Morrow and Sheryn O’Malveney are excited about the upgrades to the function room at the Canowindra Bowling Club.

Bowling Club Gets Beautified The new curtains are up at the Canowindra Bowling Club and the ladies of the club are excited to see the rest of the transformations take shape. With the new carpet being put down in the very near future and a brand new dishwasher on the way, everyone is excited about the Club’s new look taking shape. “The new curtains went up about three weeks ago and they came up really well,” said Ladies Club President Sheryn O’Malveney. “They looked great during the last function we had.” The Ladies Club Vice President agreed saying “I think they’re great!” “Having the new dishwasher will make a real difference too,” said Diane Slattery from the Club. Diane and a few of the other ladies from the Bowling Club will be taking part in an upcoming production of the hit musical Grease to raise funding for the carpet upgrades. “All systems are go for the show,” says Tommy Jeffs from Deli Lama who is at the forefront of the fundraising efforts. “There are

only 30 tickets left so get in and get them! Don’t leave it to the last minute or you’ll be disappointed.” The format for the evening will be a 50s style show featuring performances by Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Connie Francis and Vicki Lawrence to name a few. There will be raffles and door prizes announced before the production of Grease, as well as guest performances, local celebrities and an appearance from the divine Talulah. An Italian buffet is included in the ticket price with the room being dressed in an Italian style and two buffet tables with lots of pasta, breads and salads. This is the culmination of Tommy’s fundraising efforts for the Canowindra Bowling Club and everyone is encouraged to help celebrate the affair by dressing in 50’s style costume. Tickets are available at Deli Lama but they are running out fast. Get in quick before you miss out! By Rosi Broom

Media reports over the past couple of days are confusing to say the least and it is difficult to know who is the most confused. “First report in The Sunday Telegraph headlines “Sack Them All” claiming Local Government Minister Paul Toole had put a proposal to cabinet to sack all Councils and Mayors and place administrators in charge until mid2016,” said Amalgamation No Thank You (ANTY) spokesperson Marj Bollinger. The Greens’ David Shoebridge stated in a media release this week “the Minister for Local Government has insulted local councils and communities across the state by describing the growing campaign against forced amalgamations as driven by ‘self-interest’.” “Paul Toole’s office rejects a report that the government is preparing to sack every Council and Mayor in NSW to implement its amalgamation agenda,” an SMH report said. Finally, a nervous looking Minister Toole was filmed giving evidence to the IPART Upper House Inquiry on WIN News on Monday night and later retold the story of the Fit for the Future process, insisting that it will happen. “I find this all very confusing and can’t help but wonder if Mr Toole himself is a little confused as well,” said Marj Bollinger. “I guess those of us who are standing up against the amalgamations could be considered to be looking after our own interests because if we don’t, who will?” “If we leave it up to the Local Government Minister to look after us there will be nothing left for anyone.” Marj says the chances of Mr Toole and the Baird Government being re-elected at the next election are very slim if they don’t “start to listen to the people who vote, and abide by their wishes to stand alone and control their own destiny.”

Male voice choirs can be found all over the world from Spain to Serbia, New Zealand and back again. Australia also keeps this great tradition alive and the Orange Male Voice Choir is one of the oldest in the country, founded in 1926. Canowindra residents are invited to share in the awesome experience of an all-male song when Orange Male Voice Choir join with the Ku-ring-gai Male Choir in a concert at All Saints Anglican Church on Saturday 22 August at 7:30pm. A wide range of music will be performed including folk, classical, sacred, contemporary, musical theatre and more. “The unique blend of closely harmonised male voices lends itself to a wide musical repertoire and audiences always appreciate the wide range of music and the beauty of thrilling harmony singing,” said David Woodside, President of the OMVC. “All Saints boasts an excellent pipe organ and it will feature prominently in the concert,” David said. “Residents who have been privileged to hear Simon Tedeschi play the grand piano in All Saints will already appreciate that instrument’s quality.” OMVC remains an institution in Orange where it has forged a reputation for quality performances during almost 90 years of activity. The group is a well-bonded team with strong mutual commitments which is reflected in the stability of its leadership; for almost 70 years the Choir has had only two conductors. The Let All Men Sing Concert has been organised by the Canowindra branch of the CWA for the benefit of the Virginia Cullane Cancer Research Foundation. Tickets will be available on the door for $20 including a supper, wine and biscuits during the interval. This is an evening of music that cannot be missed!

My House My Home Savvy Savings New research suggests that half of the Gen Ys in Australia have less than $100 per week to spend on food and incidentals. Out of the 1700 people aged 18-24 who were surveyed almost 1 in 2 had only $300 or less to spend each month after rent and bills. Gen Ys want to be more thrifty with their money so here are some tips from EatNow.com.au for thrifty living to help keep you saving savvy: 1. Use buy/swap/sell sites: You’d be surprised by how many people are offering their unneeded furniture and wares either at crazy low prices or for free on these social media pages. Really think about whether your next item needs to be brand new or if you’d be happy with pre-loved. 2. Stick to the list: Shopping lists have the potential to save you a lot of money if you actually use it. Write a list of things you really need before you go to the shops and stick to it by avoiding impulse purchases. Remember: there is a big difference between “need” and “want”. 3. Switch banks: Some banks now offer cash-back on pay pass or tap-and-go purchases as well as zero ATM fees. You don’t have to stick with the same bank account you opened in primary school. Why would you pay to access your own cash when there are free options available? 4. Light up: Candles are always popular but aside from being aromatically and aesthetically pleasing, candles can help you save money on your electricity bills.

A change in season is around the corner and it is an important time to remind green thumbs to be aware of overhead power lines and other electrical equipment when working in the garden. Phillip Green, the regional manager of South Eastern at Essential Energy said while winter was an ideal time to prepare the garden for the warmer months, it is dangerous to prune vegetation growing near power lines, transformers and padmounts. “Never attempt to prune or remove trees if they are within three metres of a power line or there is a risk that a cut branch could fall onto wires,” Phillip said. “Remember that electricity can jump and arc across an open space so take care when carrying ladders and pruning equipment around the yard.”

How long have you lived in Canowindra? I’ve lived in and around Canowindra the past 7 years and lived at Mt McDonald near Wyangala Dam before that. What is your favourite thing about Canowindra? It is where I met my fiancé and it is mainly a quiet peaceful little area. What do you love about your job? Not looking at the same place day in and day out and get to see a bit of the countryside. My workmate Andrew (Roo) is as mad as the rest of us. Do you have any hobbies? On-road and offroad motorbikes. Motorbikes, motorbikes, motorbikes. Need I say anymore? What is your favourite music to listen to right now? Lately I’ve been listening to old school Gunfighter ballads by Marty Robbins. If you could have dinner with anyone, alive, dead or fictional, who would it be? Without a doubt it would be my Grandfather Mr Kenneth Gander. Miss him more than anything every day. Describe your dream holiday. A little sand, a little water, with my woman and a bottle of nice single malt scotch.

GREEN Thumb Almost all of us have shady spots in the garden where it’s hard to get plants to do well, let alone produce beautiful colour. This month I wanted to highlight plants that do well in shade-whether that’s on the south side of the house, under trees or areas overshadowed by fences or neighbouring buildings. Starting with evergreen flowering shrubs, my favourites for shady spots are daphne, japonica camellias, kalmia (mountain laurel), rhododendrons, pieris (Christmas cheer and forest flame) and azaleas. There is also a pink flowering native shrub, Correa dusky bells, that handles shade well. For winter colour in a shady spot, it’s hard to go past hellebores or winter roses. The most common type, Helleborus orientalis, throws up spikes of pink/purple/dark red flowers that generally face downwards. A newer cultivar, Hellebore Honeyhill Joy, producers beautiful clumps of green/white flowers-I’ve got a ripper one of these flowering now in a shady patch of my garden. For groundcovers suited to shady spots, one of the hardiest plants is Lamium (common name deadnettle). They come in a range of leaf colours from dark green, to yellow and variegated, and with flowers from white to pink and dark purple. Ajuga Catlins Giant is another groundcover doing well in shady parts of my garden-the leaves are glossy dark purple and they produce spikes of blue flowers in spring. Polemonium (Jacobs ladder) is another shade loving groundcover. Other perennials that do well in shade, die back in winter but burst forth with colour in spring and summer include hydrangeas (look for the beautiful lace cap flowering “Strawberries and Cream”), Aquilegia (Columbines), Hostas and Japanese windflowers (Anemone) which produce tall spikes of white or pink flowers. Finally, if you’re looking for some strappy leaf plants that are hardy and will tolerate shade, you should consider Dianella (native flax lily) and Lomandra. By Ian Rogan Millthorpe Garden Nursery

enjoying the warmer weather up north. The Variety Bash started in Craigieburn, just outside of Melbourne on Wednesday and continued onto Coonabarabran on Thursday night. A lot of the teams taking part in the 2015 Variety Bash are “repeat bashers” who are at least on their second run. One of the Bashers on the expedition had completed over 20 Variety Bash events in total which is an incredible achievement. The Variety Bash is Australia’s largest motoring event and allows participants the chance to visit rural communities they would otherwise not experience. By Rosi Broom

The 2015 Miss Showgirl Competition is seeking entrants between 18-24 years of age who are living in or associated with Canowindra. The Miss Showgirl Ball is only 4 weeks away and it is going to be a fun night where the entrants can mingle and dance after receiving their entrant’s sashes and answering three questions. The 2015 Miss Showgirl will be announced at the Canowindra Show in late September. The judges will make their decisions based on personality, appearance, confidence and knowledge in general, local, show and rural subjects. This is a great opportunity for young women in the community to challenge themselves and improve upon skills and confidence. “For me it was an awesome experience,” says Miss Showgirl Competition organiser Kristy White. “I got to meet so many people, get behind the scenes of the Show and get involved with it all.” Anyone who would like to take part should email Kristy at krist_anne@hotmail.com before 12 September.

RUGBY

Canowindra Pythons Advance to Finals The semi-finals for the Southern Division Graincorp Competition were under way on the weekend with the Canowindra Pythons dominating in a win over the premiers Molong Magpies. The Magpies came out strong in attack to gain the first points on the board but it wasn’t long before Jack Knight palmed off defence to even the score 5-5. With the Pythons all working together Ed Price was able to make a break down the sideline to then offload to Tom Roth to score getting in front 10-5. Jordan Irvine and Ronald Lawrence both played well making some strong hit ups bouldering over the Magpies defence. Ed Price continued to work well on his feet as he found a gap close to the line to score next to the post and Tom Roth successfully converted. The Magpies charged back with a try just

before half time leaving the scoreboard 12-17. After the half time break the Pythons came back out with force with the realisation of winning and progressing into the finals. The whole team came out strong which led to Craig McKenzie charging over the line to secure a try and Tom Roth successfully converting making the score 12-24. The Magpies weren’t giving up either swooping in for another try to nearer the score to 17-24. With minutes to go Adam Nash and Clayton Maynard were strong in defence holding up a number of tries until the fulltime bell rang leaving the Pythons victorious with a win 2417. The Pythons now progress to the finals playing against Condobolin. A supporters bus will be travelling out to Condobolin and if interested please contact Rob Morris. By Taneil Thornberry

gowra gained some ascendancy and scored two quick tries to take the lead 10-4. Strong running from Kain Earsman broke the Eugowra line to find Nick Willson lurking up in support. He ran away to score under the post which was converted by McLean to even the scores 10 all. With only 4 minutes before the half time siren, Eugowra scored from a kick which took an awful bounce to the Tigers defence. Eu-

It was a disappointing weekend for the Canowindra Tigers last weekend with all grades going down to Eugowra. The Tigers started the game off well with a try to Brad Tangye to give them the lead 4-0. The boys looked to be in control and it was a good sign as there were a number of changes in the squad. As a few errors crept into the Tigers play, Eu-

gowra converted and the Tigers trailed by 6 points at half time. Early in the second half Canowindra lost the ball in goal and Eugowra pounced to force the ball for a try which was converted to extend their lead to 12 points. This trend continued and from a penalty kick the Tigers failed to put it out, allowing Eugowra to score the next set of 6. From this point Eugowra controlled the match with some smart kicks which resulted in tries or repeat sets, wearing down the Tigers defence. In the 17th minute the Tigers hit back with some good play. Aaron Earsman spotted a hole and took full advantage to score. Jayden Brown converted to narrow the gap to 14 points. The Tigers continued to work hard but when given good field position they made silly errors, handing the ball back to Eugowra. The home side came out winners with the final score at 36-16. The total tackle for the match was 267 with 161 of these in the second half. It is commitment from everyone that makes up a footy side so get behind the Tigers and cheer them on this Saturday as they play against Grenfell to stay in the tournament.

LADIES GOLF 5 August was yet another cold day on the course although the competition was heating up. Annette and Eileen were 1 stroke behind Helen and Ross, the leaders in the Foursomes Championship and this was the final round! After the 17th, both teams were even. Anette and Eileen took two putts and then Helen did it – the pressure putt of the series and in it went securing Helen and Ross the Foursomes Championship for 2015. Rhonda and Helen C had a fantastic day and were the daily winners. The Eileen Garnsey Memorial Shield match play final was played between Helen Kemper & Eileen Wilson on Saturday in absolutely perfect weather conditions; sunshine and a top of 15 degrees with a slight breeze. With Eileen +3 after the front 9, Helen made a great match to take it to the 17th where the match was finally decided on, with Eileen the eventual winner. This Friday Annette & Eileen will travel to Wellington to play with 46 players from across the Western Districts who have all qualified to play in the WDLGA 4BBB finals. Upcoming tournaments include Condobolin, Cobar, Narromine, Manildra and Albert. Planning is underway for our Canowindra Tournament on Thursday 10th September.
