IMAGE: Bill Paul’s Carpet copped the brunt of Monday night’s storms and wet weather.
Gaskill Street Under Water The sight that greeted the Phoenix staff on Tuesday morning was a sorry one indeed. As storms and heavy rains swept across Canowindra and the surrounding areas, a blocked drain in Gaskill Street overflowed and caused quite a lot of damage. The excess water from the rain and hail storm rose several inches above the footpath and flooded multiple buildings in the main street. In some cases, hail blocked the gutters and water flooded in through other parts of the building. So far, Bill Paul’s Carpets appears to be the worst affected with an early estimation of $25,000-$30,000 damage. While this is not the first time the historic building has flooded, it is probably the worst.
“We had three inches of water coming through the front door,” said Bill Paul. “We tried to use a carpet cushion to soak up the water coming in, but by that time the damage was already done.” “There’s nothing we could do because there’s no notice for floods like that; I don’t think the drains can handle it.” In the face of the loss and a big clean up, Bill is staying positive. “We’ll get over it, like we do with everything else. We’ll see what we can do and go from there.” Jenny Cullane was glad she was close by when the water started flooding the back of Virginia Cullane Books. In full damage control, Jenny said “if I hadn’t been here, it would’ve been a lot worse.” By Rosi Broom

Dear Editor, What does a person have to do to get an outcome which is provided for in the law? Once again my livestock have been mauled; not taken for food but thrill kill damaged. Three goats, one a mature doe and two weaner kids have been bailed up and savaged, one in my stables, the others were savaged last week, on different days, found bailed up in corners of their paddock, all with their back legs mauled, I have baited for dog and fox, installed fox lights for night protection (and they work) but I am continually frustrated by the ongoing daytime attacks on my stock. Observing dog intrusions onto my property I have contacted the police, but they say it’s not their problem, and I should contact the Council Ranger. I thought police had law enforcement responsibilities. The ranger had on a previous occasion removed an offending dog from its owner, but now says due to a change in policy he cannot remove dogs.
The law says he can, his management says he can’t, and in the meantime my livestock is at risk. It is high time irresponsible owners were made fully accountable for the losses their uncontrolled predatory pets cause and laws were enforced. Bureaucrats should not lessen the availability of legal remedies. Surprisingly, the only time the kills stop is when I put out signs saying I have baits out. Dogs and foxes can’t read, can they?? Build Your Own Ecosystem Sustainable and environmentally conscious lifestyles are gaining momentum in Australia and more people are seeking out advice and direction on how to achieve that at home. Rosnay is one of Canowindra’s living examples of organic sustainability and together with Michelle Sheather and Tass Schmidt they are offering a 2-day introductory permaculture course. “I’ve known the Rosnay team for quite a few years,” says Michelle, an international ecologist and sustainable agriculture advocate. “This is a working orchard and farm using great sustainable building examples.” The course will be held at Rosnay and will cover advanced sustainability issues for the garden and home, discussing climate facts, water drainage, reducing the use of toxic chemicals and looking at the best way to prepare a site. You will learn factors to consider on your property, companion and rotational planting, and the twelve design principles that are the cornerstone of permaculture. “Anyone with an interest in permaculture or
healthy lifestyles can do this course,” says Oli Statham. “People can learn new things to take away and implement at home.” This course could teach you how to achieve amazing things in your home by maximising the productivity of a small amount of space, lowering maintenance, growing your own nutritious, healthy food, looking at how to maintain healthy soil and other fundamentals of creating your own ecosystem. “It’s not highly expensive to achieve these things and it really does save money in the long term,” says Michelle. Participants are invited to get revitalised with morning yoga led by Lyn from Ishvara Yoga in Orange in the mornings and on Saturday evening there will be a wine tasting with a feast featuring locally sourced food as well as quality entertainment. Bookings are essential so to secure your spot at this rare event email tassprojects@ gmail.com or phone 0412 861 586. Cost is $350 with discounts for students and pensioners available. By Rosi Broom

Agronomy News July has seen up to 100mm of rain or more across much of the district as well as a couple of good falls of snow. This has certainly given us a full profile of moisture and some much needed run off in some places with dams finally beginning to fill. The cold weather is still with us however, the days are lengthening and it won’t be long before crops and pastures start to push ahead with some warmer temperatures.
Winter cereals can be grazed before growth stage Z30 or jointing. This stage cannot be necessarily determined by a date but it usually occurs towards the end of August. Visual observation of the emerging head is the only way of accurately determining this growth stage. By splitting the stem towards the base of the main stem you will find the developing head. It is just above the first node. With a full moisture profile, optimising yield this year is an option in both canola and wheat. Crops would be at the ideal stage for topdressing and with further rain fronts forecast; it could well be a profitable exercise this year. Weed control is still being carried out in crops especially wheat. Ryegrass options are all but exhausted however with wild oats Axial is probably the main option being considered these days. It can be tank mixed with a number of broadleaf products to give a one pass weed control option. Topik is still a good option however resistance to this chemistry is becoming quite widespread. Heavy infestation of Saffron Thistles, Paterson’s Curse and Capeweed in pastures will require spraying as soon as possible otherwise they will become a considerable problem in spring. Consider using Agritone 750 or Amicide Advance with the addition of Lontrel Advance if you have any amount of Spear Thistle or St Barnaby’s Thistle. For Paterson’s Curse and Capeweed we would suggest the addition of Igran or Salvation. A red legged earth mite spray may also be warranted. By Keith Garlick

Be careful upgrading, realise although free it costs download to make it happen. If unsure you can come and speak with me. Windows 10 will keep trying to install but I can fix that if required if you decide you don’t want it. Windows 7 is still a reasonable operating system and valid for the next 4 years at least.

After participating in the competition in 2013, Amy is excited to come back and give it a final crack. Amy says getting involved in an event like this is a fantastic opportunity for young women in Canowindra to get involved in the community and network with other young people. “It’s a good opportunity to meet new girls,” says Amy. “Since I did it 2 years ago I have made a lot of friends.” “After doing the Miss Showgirl competition

in 2013 I have become a lot more involved in the show and I’m even Joint Secretary of the Show Society this year. It has changed my whole perception of the Show.” To all the young women who haven’t entered the competition and are still considering it, Amy says “do it! You will definitely get so much from it!” “It’s not a beauty competition; if it were I wouldn’t enter it,” says Amy. “I have learned so much from taking part and my love for the community has grown even more.” By Rosi Broom

RUGBY LEAGUE
The Tigers First Grade team took on Grenfell on Saturday. Canowindra started the game well, scoring early in the eighth minute with a try from Kain Earsman and conversion from Matt McLean. The Tigers lost the ball to give Grenfell a shot at scoring, but the Canowindra forwards slowly gained control, resulting in a try to Alex Willson and another to Matt McLean minutes later, taking the lead to 14-4. Canowindra gave away a couple of silly penalties and lost the ball in their own half. This allowed Grenfell to have more possession and in the closing stages of the half they scored an unconverted try. Grenfell hit back early in the second half and gained the lead 10 minutes in. From then on it was all Tigers with tenacious defence. Canowindra stretched their lead 26-16 and displayed some classy football. Rob Burn put in a short kick which rebounded off a Grenfell defender. Rob pounced on the ball to score and McLean added the extras to seal the win. Grenfell scored on a consolation try off the back of a Tiger error but it was the Tigers that came out on top, winning the game with a score of 32-20. By Terese Peters
RUGBY UNION
The Canowindra Pythons took on the Condobolin Rams on Sunday in a semi-determining who would play West Wyalong in the final on Saturday, before the Grand Final against the Blayney Bears. Even though the weather wasn’t full of sunshine, the Canowindra supporters made up for it by nearly out numbering the Condobolin supporters, at their home ground. The wet conditions made it difficult to control the ball and Condobolin secured the lead early 7-0. With halftime nearing the Pythons had a
number of attempts at scoring, but they couldn’t get past the Rams strong defence. The Pythons soon pushed back harder, which saw Sean Wyburn charge his way through to score under the post and Tom Roth successfully converted the try and at half time the score was even at 7-7. The Pythons came back out strong with most of the ball play in our attacking half. With everyone working as a team Ronald Lawrence was able to push over the line to score and Tom Roth kept it up by successfully converting his second try, making the score 14-7. With a 7-point lead the Pythons continued to hold out Condobolin for the remainder of the game. The cheers from the Canowindra supporters sounded the end of the game with the Pythons victorious. Thank you to the Canowindra supporters who got behind the Pythons and travelled to Condobolin on Sunday. The Pythons will now travel to West Wyalong this Saturday to play for a spot in the grand final. Taneil Thornberry

The Tigresses fought hard against Grenfell on Saturday, who pulled out some fine attacking moves which Canowindra responded to well. A few early tries put Grenfell on the score board but the girls didn’t give up. Krystal went over with a beautiful chip and chase in the dying second of the first half to keep the score within 2 points. The second half was an arm wrestle with neither team willing to back down. Grenfell managed to cross the line another 2 times before the end of the game and the final score was 6-20 in Grenfell’s favour. The Tigresses are going back to the drawing board before taking Grenfell on again in the semi-finals next week. By Terese Peters
