IMAGE: The Canowindra SES Unit are an asset to the community and are desperately seeking volunteers.
Help Save Canowindra SES Volunteers are the lifeblood of many rural towns performing vital services that otherwise could not get done. Unfortunately, in many rural areas volunteer numbers are in decline with shrinking numbers now threatening to close the doors of the Canowindra Unit of the NSW State Emergency Service. “We are really short on members and at the moment we can’t fill a team to respond to a callout,” said Cameron Mckenzie, a volunteer of the Canowindra SES Unit. “In the storms we had last week, we needed to call in two teams from Orange, a team from Molong and a team from Eugowra. If we can’t fill a team, people that need help could be waiting more than an hour, which is probably too late when water is running through your house.” The NSW SES offers free training and volunteers are provided with the necessary uni-
forms and equipment required. “The best part about volunteering is the feeling I get from helping someone out,” Cameron said. “When everyone is panicking, you help them sort it out. You also get to meet a lot of new people and form good friendships.” People in Canowindra are encouraged to take part in an Open Day at the Canowindra Unit Headquarters on Sunday 13 September between 11am and 2pm. A free sausage sizzle will be provided and individuals can learn more about how they can contribute. “Unless more members of the Canowindra community join and support their local SES Unit, it may close,” NSW SES Central West Region Controller Craig Ronan said. “Canowindra can suffer from flooding and storms, both of which can cause widespread damage. Without an SES Unit in Canowindra, the community would be worse off.”

Dear Editor I was thrilled to hear that Mandageria fairfaxi won and Canowindra is now the home of the NSW State Fossil – what a great honour for the town! Dr Alex Ritchie is not just “a palaeontologist who played a major role in the rediscovery and excavation of the Canowindra fossil site in 1993”. Dr Ritchie is THE palaeontologist who rediscovered the fossil site and organised for it to be excavated! Dr Ritchie is also THE palaeontologist who initiated the Age of Fishes Museum to be built at Canowindra instead of moving the fossils to Sydney. He encouraged Zerina Johanson and Per Ahlberg to describe most of the fishes discovered at the Canowindra fossil site, thus encouraging a new generation of palaeontologists. Dr Ritchie has dedicated the past 22 years of his life to promoting the Canowindra fish fossils and the museum. It was he who, over 10 years ago, came up with the idea to nom-
inate one of the Canowindra fishes as the NSW State Fossil in order to raise Canowindra’s and the fossils’ public profile. He submitted the initial nomination for Canowindra grossi and, when that failed due to the fact that there was still only one known specimen, he didn’t give up but instead put together the nomination for Mandageria fairfaxi. It took a further 3 years, and lots of lobbying on his part, for this nomination to come to fruition. Most of Dr Ritchie’s work happens in the background, from home, in his own, unpaid time. Unfortunately, most people are not aware of his REAL contribution to Canowindra and the Age of Fishes Museum, which is no doubt why he suddenly became just ‘a palaeontologist’. He is the father of the AOFM! Monica Yeung GONDWANA DREAMING Director Weston Creek, ACT

Travel update! Allan and Debbie Symons have sent in an update this week covering their travels from Corella Dam to Townsville. “Townsville is a very big and spread out city, host to several military bases,” Allan wrote. “We have been on the ferry over to Magnetic Island for a very nice day with a lunch of peppered lemon squid and coral trout; I’ve never tasted anything better. The Mt Stuart lookout was great with 360 degree views around Townsville. The Kissing Point War Museum was very interesting and only 3kms from the city, right on the beach.” Allan and Debbie are heading south of their location towards NSW through Emerald, Roma and Lightning Ridge. They will stay at Burrendong Dam for a week before coming home mid-September. Daffodil Day was on 28 August and the stall at IGA raised over $2000! Well done to all the people who took the time to contribute to this important cause. Police are investigating a report of malicious damage in Canowindra after a tree was damaged at a private residence on Waddell Street. The incident occurred between 4:30pm on Tuesday 25 August and 1pm on Wednesday 26 August. If you have any information regarding the offence, please call

CUMULUS WINES Reducing growing costs and focusing on sustainable farming practices has resulted in several environmental advantages for Cumulus Estate Wines. The vineyard has been nominated for Excellence in Environmental Enhancement in the 2015 Cabonne Daroo Business Awards. Viticulturalist Marty Gransden says by utilising multi-row and multifunction technology for trimming and mowing, they are able to save on labour and fuel which reduces soil compaction. Using drip irrigation has meant more efficient water use, while capacitance probes measure moisture in the soil, enabling staff to target irrigation where it is needed most. Even the by-product of the winemaking process, the used skins, seeds and stems, are spread back onto the ground as mulch, putting muchneeded organic carbon back into the soil, while the use of beneficial insects in the vineyard has enabled a reduction in the use of chemicals. Established in 1995, Cumulus Estate Wines is the largest producer in the region, offering at least 10 different varietals.

Health Smart Free Hearing Checks in Cowra and Blayney The Australian Hearing bus is stopping by Cowra and parking outside Target and also at the Blayney Farmers Market to offer free hearing checks and raise hearing health awareness. The mobile hearing service has provided over 28,000 free hearing checks in the communities across Australia since it first launched in 2009. No destination is too far-flung or offbeat! Debra Clarke-McSephney, Manager at Australian Hearing Orange, said as age-related hearing loss developed gradually over time it was common for people to not be aware their hearing is diminishing.
Hearing loss is a prevalent issue in the community, with around 60 per cent of Australians over 60 suffering from some form of hearing loss. “A hearing check is a quick and easy way to measure the sounds you can and can’t hear. Our team will also be on hand to guide you through what next steps you may have to take in regards to your hearing.” As well as having a hearing check, visitors to the bus can find information on a range of common hearing issues and view a display of easy-to-use hearing devices for around the home. This includes headsets for watching the
TV and alert systems for doorbells. “Not everyone who is experiencing problems hearing needs a hearing aid. Sometimes it’s just hearing the TV at normal volumes, hearing your doorbell, or hearing your friends on the phone that’s the problem.” No appointment is necessary. Australian Hearing will provide hearing checks to any interested adults who visit the bus on the day. The Australian Hearing Bus will be outside Target in Cowra on 18 September between 9:30am and 3:30pm, and at Blayney Farmers Market in Carrington Park, Blayney on 20 September between 8:30am and 12:30pm.

Charlie and his wife Joyanne then travelled to Adelaide in April for the Hire and Rental Industry Association’s Convention which was a 3 day event finishing with the Excellence Awards and Dinner which saw them take home the finalist trophy. The business was judged against other hire companies Australia wide, many of these being from big cities, so for the business to be noticed on this scale is such a fantastic and much deserved achievement.

Hunt for Career Criminals Police across NSW and Queensland are urgently searching for information on two men who are believed to have been involved in a long string of crimes on rural properties across the two states. Eluding police since 2007, Gino “John” Stocco, 57, and his son Mark Stocco, 35, are wanted for questioning in regards to a plethora of crimes including identity theft, property theft, arson, assault and wilful damage. Police believe the Stoccos, who were most recently sighted in South-West Sydney, respond to advertisements for jobs as caretakers on rural properties and target those properties once their employment is terminated. Canowindra residents Guy and Donna Tidswell have seen the carnage these individuals can leave behind first hand, after they allegedly caused $180,000 damage on the Tidswell’s property last year. The Stoccos reportedly stole numerous items from the Tidswell’s machinery work-
shop, slashed and drilled more than sixty tyres and then set the entire shed ablaze. “We lost a truck, a tractor, mowers, welders, a boat…the list goes on,” Donna said. “We’ve since had to rebuild our shed and endure enormous replacement costs.” Guy and Donna’s son Luke intercepted the pair on the night of the attack. “It’s been an awful experience for us and we’re all still feeling the impact of it because we know they are still out there,” Luke said. The two men are wanted in relation to at least 8 other attacks on rural properties in NSW, Queensland and Victoria, and gained national media attention in 2007as well as the reputation of “pirates”. It’s understood the men could be driving 4WD vehicles and may also have a caravan. Anyone with information is urged not to approach the men or to arouse their suspicion, but to contact local police immediately or contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Be Entertained From Beethoven to Brazil
Troy’s Freedom Ride
Join the Mitchell Conservatorium on an exciting series of concerts in historic churches across Western NSW. After the success of the first performance, the second concert in the series will take place at 3pm on Sunday 6 September in Blayney’s Anglican Christ Church. Musicians appearing in the performance include Georg Mertens on cello and local Blayney resident Sam Carter on guitar. Georg Mertens says the concert program has been specifically selected for the ambience of smaller churches. “In 2001 I had the opportunity to perform in some of the village churches in the area, coincidentally built around the same time of the composer J.S Bach’s career in Europe,” George says. “The churches were quite small but I was overwhelmed by the impression that the Cello Suites by Bach must have been written for spaces like that.” This was then the beginning of the historic churches of Western NSW concert tour. The concert program includes Three Nocturnes “Les Murmures du Rhone”, Beethoven’s Sonatina (arranged by Georg), Vivaldi’s Sonata No. 5 in E minor (arranged by Georg), and Bachianas Brasilieras by Villa Lobos. The event is supported by the Blayney Town Association and the concert will both delight and entertain audiences. Don’t miss out on your seat – call Mitchell Conservatorium on 6331 6622 for more details.
Multi-award winning Australian country music artist Troy Cassar-Daley has embarked on his national “Freedom Ride” tour across Australia to celebrate the release of his 9th solo studio album of the same name, released earlier this year. Troy loves to hit the road and play live to legions of fans and he will be joined by a stellar band of musicians for companionship, including special guest Pete Denahy. “Heading out on the road with a new album is both exciting and nerve wracking at the same time,” Troy says. “I can’t wait to share the new songs with everyone, but at the same time I want to bring some of the older songs to the front of the list to be heard again. Call it a trip down memory lane and a new musical adventure, all in the same show!” “The Freedom Ride tour will cover many parts of our great nation and bring with it songs of social conscience, songs of hope and stories about us as Australians and the things that make us unique.” “Happy and sad yarns are the way our lives generally fall and I want you to watch the big door swing open on this old bus and climb aboard as we journey wherever the road may take us, together on this Freedom Ride.” Troy will be performing at the Orange Civic Theatre on Saturday 12 September. Contact Orange Civic Theatre today on 6393 8111 to book your seat.

Karl Kemper How long have you lived in Canowindra? I’ve lived here since 1962. I was in Glenrowan before that. I came to Australia from Amsterdam in 1952. What is your favourite thing about Canowindra? I just like the place – I’m part of the furniture! What do you do for work? I was a baker for 20 years and I was hay-carting for 20 years. Now I’m the Secretary of the Men’s Shed and the Golf Club. What are your other passions? Playing cards! If you could have dinner with anyone, who would it be? Years ago it would have been Elizabeth Taylor, but now, no way! I’d have dinner with my wife. Describe your dream holiday: We used to go away and rent a house up the coast and enjoy the surf, but we could never wait to be back home. What is your worst habit? Having a few drinks and always getting into trouble. Where is your favourite place in the world? Up home! We have the perfect view – you couldn’t ask for anything else. Who inspires you the most? The Diggers.

What is ‘Perfect Health’? Is perfect health more than a perfect body? Do you believe that those wonderfully trim bodies in glossy magazines have it all sewn up? Perhaps not! Perfect health encompasses every aspect of our health, from our physical self through to our emotional and indeed spiritual self. We now know that meditation can reduce the amount of inflammation we have in our bodies, that turmeric can break down tumours, and that focused breathing can alter our blood pressure and nervous system. We have studied groups that live to 100 years old and found that they are living happy lives with very little intervention. We know that emotional health is a strong contributing factor to physical and mental health. We cannot separate one aspect of our lives from others or just focus on one to create a perfect outcome. “Everything in moderation”, and “balance in all things”! Balancing our time, our family, our work, our diets, our exercise and our emotional connections are all part of creating complete health. But how do we do that? In Ayurveda and Yoga, we say to do it slowly and with awareness. The Chopra Centre has put together a course that covers just this; a five part course that looks at balancing each aspect of your life. As a master educator with the Chopra Centre, I will be offering this course over three days, 15-17 September at Yoveda in Cowra. If you want to improve your health and make a change in any or all areas, this course will give you clear directions to help you move forward. Developed by two MD’s, it covers all aspects of health. For more information or to book your place, go to www.yoveda.com.au. What’s stopping you from creating perfect health for yourself right now? By Robyn Lynch

Strong Finish For The Canowindra Tigers YOUTH LEAGUE
RUGBY LEAGUE
The game was always going to be a tough one with front rower Sam Willson out. The boys started off well, holding Grenfell out from their line. It was ten minutes before the opposition put the first points on the score board. Canowindra hit back to close the margin a little bit, with Grenfell leading on 6-4. Grenfell then ran in two tries to extend their lead 16-4. In the opening minutes of the second half, Grenfell kicked off into space but regained the ball and scored under the post. Grenfell led 22-4 and the young Tigers had a mammoth task in front of them. Canowindra scored in the tenth minute with a great try to Jordan Kemper. This closed the gap to 22-8 but injuries put too much pressure on the Tigers and Grenfell ran away with the game. The final score was 38-8. Coach Barry Traves thanked the boys for their efforts not only on the field, but off it too.
The day started off with a questionable try to Grenfell, giving them the early lead 6-0. Canowindra hit back quickly with a try from Nick Willson, narrowing the gap to 2 points. The Tigers didn’t have the same intensity in defence as the previous week, and the Grenfell pack settled in to control the game. Grenfell scored two tries before the break, leading 16-4, and for a total of twenty minutes, the Tigers had only 12 players. The frustration of the Canowindra side didn’t help their course as Grenfell scored 3 more tries to put the score line out of reach. In the last ten minutes, the Tigers were in their groove, with Aaron Earsman and Matt McLean scoring a couple of classy tries. Unfortunately, the clock beat them on the brink of a comeback and the final score was 30-16 in Grenfell’s favour. The Club would like to thank all their supporters and sponsors throughout the year. The Canowindra Tigers presentation day will be held Saturday 10 October at the Royal Hotel.

Applications are now open for schools across the Central West region to access funding that will enable them to establish new out of school hour care services. Member for Orange Andrew Gee said the $20 million commitment aims to help create up to 45,000 additional out of school care places for primary school students in NSW. “Primary schools from all sectors may apply for one-off grants of up to $20,000 to help with the cost of establishing these services in time for the start of the 2016 school year,” Mr Gee said. “Principals of primary schools that do not presently have before and after school care are being asked to consult with their communities to determine the level of demand for an out of school hour care service at their schools.” Primary schools are encouraged to consult with each other across local areas to determine ways of working together, to match service delivery with actual demand. “Schools that do not have the space to establish an OSHC service on site are also being asked to consult with their local councils or other community organisations to identify a site for potential OSHC,” Mr Gee said. Grants for eligible schools will be awarded on the basis of a school’s capacity to establish and support an OSHC service. Applications are accessible from the NSW Department of Education, Catholic Education Commission NSW and the Association of Independent Schools of NSW websites.

Pythons Make 2015 Grand Final RUGBY UNION The Canowindra Pythons have come from 5th spot to be in the Grand Final against Blayney this weekend. It‘s been 13 years since the Pythons have been in a Grand Final and 27 years since they have won. With much talk from supporters, and previous players including Phil Balcombe, they take it back to the clubs last grand final win in 1988. “We won that game with a good goal kicker, Albert Murray was brilliant,” says Phil. The game was played against Grenfell in reserve grade. They came out on top 13-3. The Pythons are now in a different competition to back then and it’s time for them to have a win. When asked Phil wise words for this weekend’s team he had this to say: “Good luck, play well, party well”. Here’s the update from the Pythons game last weekend which determined who would be in the Grand Final. The Canowindra Pythons were victorious over the West Wyalong Weevils, on Saturday’s grand final decider of the Graincorp Southern Division competition. “It’s a great achievement for the club and the boys have become a close unit this year,” Graham Rice says. The Pythons came out strong with the forwards pushing their way up the field and rolling mauls. Adam Grant was first to make it over the line with a big push from his teammates. Tom Roth successfully converted the goal to make the score 7-0. Mick Grant played well as he broke out of scrums and continually tackled their five-eight. With

three awarded penalties against Canowindra, West Wyalong was able to get in front 9-7 before half time. The second half saw Jack Knight on fire as he pushed over the line to make the score 12-7, then again out wide while the forwards continually drove West Wyalong back, leaving the score at 17-9. Ronald Lawrence made a lot of great ground and good hit ups to keep the Pythons on the front foot. Luke Watt and Ed Price also played well as they were strong in the backs. West Wyalong got another try up on the Pythons but luckily missed the conversion making the score 17-14. With 10 minutes to go Ben Schaefer kicked a penalty goal to
make the score 20-14. West Wyalong were able to hold the ball two minutes after the siren until the Pythons finally gained possession and kicked the ball out to win the game. The Pythons will now take on Blayney in the grand final this Saturday. There will be a U7s and U9s Walla rugby game to be the curtain raiser for the grand final where they will take on Milthorpe. All supporters are encouraged to come to help cheer on the Pythons in what could make history. A supporters bus will be travelling to Blayney and if interested please contact Rob Morris.
