IMAGE: Jackie and Geoff Yeo had a vision for the town when they restored Finn’s Store five years ago.
Finn’s Store Turns Five Jackie and Geoff Yeo, the owners and restorers of Finn’s Store in Gaskill Street are celebrating five years of successful business since they reopened the doors of the iconic building. “Six years ago the Central West was gripped in drought,” said Geoff, “Canowindra was struggling and the main street was almost desolate.” Geoff and Jackie knew that drought doesn’t last forever, and in spite of the lack of optimism around the area at the time, they could see the enormous potential of the region, the town, the bendy main street and the Finn’s building. By purchasing and restoring the old building and opening a business that incorporates wine, food, coffee, art, clothing, jewellery, furniture and giftware, their concept has helped breathe life back into the town.
Jackie and Geoff have seen a definite increase in tourism and visitors to Canowindra and their shop since it opened five years ago, and other businesses have since followed suit in restoring their buildings. “Seeing other businesses step up and restore their buildings reinforces and validates the vision we saw for the town,” Geoff said. Jackie and Geoff said they are very thankful for the wonderful support they get from a core group of locals who have become strong and valued friends. “Their support has made it worthwhile when the going was tough and the work load was challenging.” Get down to Finn’s Store and help Geoff and Jackie celebrate their milestone. If you are yet to venture in, don’t be shy. It’s a store that has something for everyone.

Dear Editor, Having experienced the brown snake explosion each summer, I was wondering if there are any thoughts from wise residents on how to prevent snakes getting into your property. I have been told that the commercial dodads don’t work. Is there a fencing option? I would dearly love to protect family, friends, dogs and myself this summer. Thank you. Sylvia Skelton
Dear Editor, On one front I agree with Bill Barwood on the propensity for nay-saying in the wider community, and I also agree with his general thrust to remember ALL those who contributed to a fine community project in creating the CFM. From the discoverer of the fossil, Jack Burge who split the rock with his earthmoving equipment, aided by Dr John Knight who had the wit to send the Plaster of Paris mould to a friend at Sydney Uni. Can you imagine the feeling of being the first human to see that fish after the millions of years it lay there in the rock. Regards, Bob Sherwood Perth, Western Australia

Did you know? 89% of women with breast cancer have a five year survival rate. In the 80’s it was 72%. The breast cancer mortality rate fell 30% between 1994 and 2011. It is estimated that 15,600 women and 145 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year. Congratulations to Geoff and Jackie Yeo on their five year anniversary at Finn’s Store. Police Officer Remembered It was a proud moment for the Canowindra Historical Society & Museum on Tuesday morning with the unveiling of a memorial plaque to Senior Constable John Herbert, who was shot on duty on 13 April, 1865, and died shortly after in Canowindra. Nearly 40 people attended the event in Memorial Park, including the senior captains from Canowindra High School, Councillors Anthony Durkin and Kevin Walker from Cabonne Council, police inspector Gerard Powell from Cowra and members of the Historical Society. Margaret and Greg Hahn from the Carcoar Hospital Museum were also in attendance at the unveiling in a demonstration of how the history of the land and stories of people from generations before brings towns and people together. According to Ross Cleary from the Canowindra Historical Society, choosing 29 September as the day of the unveiling was “no accident”. “29 September is National Police Remem-
brance Day and by honouring this man on this day, we are adding to the national spirit. It seemed like the right day to do it,” Ross said. Every year the date holds special significance for police throughout Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Samoa and the Solomon Islands. It is a day where police pause to honour officers whose lives have been cut short while performing their duty as a police officer. Senior Constable John Herbert was part of a team taking part in an all-out search for bushranger Ben Hall and his gang near Molong. Herbert and a fellow police officer took leave from the campsite, but when they returned they failed to give the correct signal. Shots were fired, resulting in a fatal wound for John Herbert. The memorial plaque tells the story of Constable John Herbert and you will find it on the Gaskill Street side of Memorial Park. By Rosi Broom

AWASE MISO IMPROVISATION, MUSIC, MOVEMENT SOUND & SOUP
Piano Maestro Internationally renowned concert pianist Gil Sullivan will be in Bathurst in October for a piano performance celebrating the work of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. On Saturday 3 October, the Bathurst Chamber Orchestra will join Gil Sullivan at City Hall for a concert of musical exuberance. Gil Sullivan is Australia’s only resident fulltime concert pianist and regularly tours extensively worldwide. He has given recitals in New York’s Carnegie Hall as well as a number of opera houses and national concert halls across the globe. While he is in town, Sullivan will also be hosting master classes and private lessons through the Mitchell Conservatorium. This will give students and teachers the opportunity to learn from a man who has been described by Germany’s Südhessen Woche as “the finest interpreter of Mozart in the world”. Gil Sullivan in Concert is the first professional outing of City Hall’s new Yamaha grand piano. This piano was purchased in a joint project between the Mitchell Conservatorium, Bathurst Regional Council and the Bathurst Eisteddfod Society. The concert also marks the first of Mitchell Conservatorium’s musicians-in-residence at City Hall. Tickets are available through BMEC box office. Call 6331 6161 for more information.

An innovative radiotherapy technique with the potential to revolutionise the treatment of early breast cancer is now available and affordable for all eligible women under Medicare. Researchers from the University of Western Australia trialled the new technique on almost 300 patients at the Queen Elizabeth II Medical Centre as part of a worldwide study examining its effects on more than 2,000 patients aged over 45 years old. Research found that 30 minutes of in-theatre radiation using “targeted intra-operative radiotherapy” (TARGIT) could replace the more expensive and time-consuming six-week external beam radiotherapy technique. “We’re delighted to see good evidencebased research translated into policy for the benefit of so many women, and at times, in the face of some fierce opposition,” said Professor Christobel Saunders, deputy head of UWA’s School of Surgery. “As well as the obvious benefits of completing all the necessary radiotherapy in a single session at the time of surgery, this method also almost completely avoids irradiation of other parts of the body such as the heart, lung and oesophagus.” Clinical Professor David Joseph, co-chairman of the TARGIT steering committee said the Medicare-subsidised treatment could also mean reduced waiting lists and substantial savings for health-care systems in which breast cancer may account for a third of the workload in radiotherapy departments. “The side-effects of the TARGIT treatment were also less than those experienced with the external beam radiotherapy,” Professor Joseph said.
How to do a self-check You don’t have to be an expert or use certain techniques or technologies to check your own breasts. Take the time to get to know their regular look and feel as part of your daily routine like having a shower, getting dressed, moisturising or looking in the mirror.
Don’t ignore these symptoms • A new lump or an unusual texture in your breast tissue. • A sudden change in the shape or size of your breast. It’s common to have slight differences in symmetry as breasts develop. • Changes to the nipple such as crusting, ulceration, redness or inversion unless that is the nipple’s regular state. • Any nipple discharge that occurs without squeezing. • Any changes in the skin of the breast such as redness or dimpling. • Unusual pain that doesn’t go away, especially if it is only in one breast. Women aged 50-74 without any symptoms of breast cancer can consider having a screening mammogram every two years. More than 75% of breast cancers occur in women aged over 50 years and 9 out of 10 women diagnosed with breast cancer have no hereditary links. If cancer is picked up in a mammogram, you are almost half as likely to need a mastectomy because the regular mammograms can pick up breast cancers early, giving women the best chance for less invasive treatment and a good outcome if something is picked up.

Canowindra Showgirl 2015 Meg Devlin was surprised when she was announced as the 2015 Canowindra Showgirl at the Show on Saturday after entering the competition to try something new. “I’ve been here a year and a half and I really didn’t expect to win but it’s exciting and I’m very proud. It’s a huge deal and every second person I see is congratulating me,” said Meg. “My New Year’s Resolution was to try new things and take myself out of my comfort zone. I saw this as a good opportunity to meet more people and get more involved in the community but it’s something I never pictured myself doing. It’s a whole new experience.” Born in Cowra, Meg moved to Adelaide at 3 years old and returned to the Central West a year and a half ago for a change of scenery and circumstances. As the Canowindra Showgirl, Meg will visit Parkes in February to compete in the Zone Finals where judges choose representatives from the area to go to Sydney Royal and com-
pete to be the Showgirl representative for NSW. “I would love to get through to Sydney,” said Meg. “I think it would be an amazing experience and I want to do the town and rural NSW proud. It would be a huge honour.” Overall, this year’s Show was a fun and successful event. Deb Rutter from the Canowindra PA & H Ladies Auxiliary has extended a big thank you to the volunteers with the Show Society, the Ladies Auxiliary from the Cobley Pavilion, the sponsors, the exhibitors, the staff at the Canowindra NRMA and the local media for helping to make the Canowindra Show the success that it was. “It is through their tireless efforts this important annual community event continues to take place,” Deb said. The Show Office will be open until Friday 2 October so please collect your unclaimed prize money and uncollected items. By Rosi Broom

Kevin Beath How long have you lived in Canowindra? About 9 years. I moved here from Gooloogong. What do you love most about Canowindra? It’s pretty quiet. Where is your favourite place in the world? Africa. I went there with my dad. I liked the animals. If you could have dinner with anyone, alive, dead or fictional, who would it be? Probably my pop because I haven’t seen him for a long time. Do you have any hobbies? 4WDing, rodeo and I like going out to the Nangar Forest. Who inspires you the most? My girlfriend Tahleah Smith. What is your worst habit? Smoking. I’m going to quit. What do you love to do on the weekends? Sleep but I never get it. What is the biggest change you would like to see in the world? World peace and less poverty.

8 Tips For Better Health this Spring Here are eight Ayurvedic tips that can naturally and gently guide you toward a healthy weight, balance hormonal and digestive systems and assist with healthy sleep habits, without the use of chemicals, processed food, or extreme diets. 1. Drink a large cup of hot water with fresh ginger, freshly squeezed lemon juice and honey upon waking to stimulate the digestive system and the bowels. 2. Exercise enough to “bring a gentle sheen to your face”, i.e. light sweat, is suggested as a daily morning practice. 3. Find 10 minutes of peace and relaxation in the morning. Mind/body practices like yoga and meditation elicit a relaxation response in the body. This helps to alleviate stress, one of the main causes of hormonal imbalances, weight gain, digestive disturbances, headaches, insomnia and more. 4. Eat three meals a day. No snacks for weight loss. For your health ensure that you are indeed a little hungry before you snack. Food is a fast-burning fuel, and when your body is given a constant fuel line, it forgets how to burn fat. 5. Eat with the season, and preferably eat local. When we eat mostly organic, in season, and local foods, our bodies naturally and effortlessly digest and assimilate nutrients. 6. Experience all six tastes. In Ayurveda, we recognize six tastes: sweet, sour, salty, pungent, bitter, and astringent. Be sure to incorporate all six tastes into your daily diet. 7. Move a little after each meal. Going for short walks after each meal stimulates peristalsis and digestion. It’s most important to go for a walk after lunch, preferably 10 to 20 minutes at a moderate pace. 8. Go to bed with the sun, and rise with the sun. Tapping into our natural circadian rhythms creates a major hormone-balancing effect, helping us to sleep better and maintain a healthy weight. These eight steps can have profound effects on your health. Start by incorporating one each week and by Christmas you will feel lighter, less stressed and more energized.

IMAGE: Help Healthy Harold educate kids by getting sober in October!
Get Sober in October Three quarters of Australians believe the nation has a problem with excess drinking or alcohol abuse, according to a recent poll carried out by the Foundation for Alcohol Research & Education (FARE). The survey showed that almost 80% of people want to see more done to reduce the harm caused by alcohol and Life Education is urging Aussies everywhere to invest in education as part of the broader solution. The challenge is to lose the booze for 31 days as part of “Ocsober” and raise money to support Life Education, an Australian not-for-profit organisation that is synonymous with ‘Healthy
Community Notices
Harold’ and its preventative health programs. With influential support coming from Ocsober ambassadors such as Georgie Gardner, Angry Anderson, Trent ‘Maxi’ Maxwell and Deedee Zibara, now is the time to sign up and make a change in the community. “During Ocsober, raising just $109 will subsidise 10 children from a disadvantaged school so they can access the Life Education program for the first time,” Life Education NSW CEO Kellie Sloane said. It’s not too late! Register as a team or individual now at www.ocsober.com.au to take the 31 day challenge.

Producers, students and members of the public will all have a chance to brush up on their agricultural knowledge at the 2015 Australian National Field Days in Borenore. The ANFD event started in 1952 and is Australia’s oldest annual agricultural exhibition. Each year over 600 exhibitors from Australia and around the world display their products and services at ANFD. Retired professional staff from the former Department of Agriculture play an important volunteer role in the educational display at the ANFD, located in the Trevor Elliot Pavilion. These “Old Aggies” as they call themselves have a wealth of agricultural knowledge and experience to share with visitors to the ANFD in the areas of horticulture, agronomy, weed control and livestock. Producers can look forward to useful information and learning opportunities at ANFD, including a plant identification display with more than 70 weeds and pasture species. The 2015 Australian National Field Days will be held from 22 to 24 October in Borenore.

Orange To Host East/West Rodeo RODEO The East to West Coast Rodeo Championships will be held at the Orange Showground on Saturday 17 October with a fantastic lineup of Australian rodeo stars in a night of bone-crunching family entertainment. This event will feature the cream of Australian talent in bull riding, saddle bronc riding, bareback bronc riding, ladies barrel racing and junior rodeo events. The rodeo will also feature international riders and death defying bull fighters who will put their lives on the line to save fallen riders from charging rodeo bulls. As well as a top line-up of rodeo action, there will be a number of other special events including a comedy act by Australia’s funniest rodeo clown Big Al and his monster truck. There will be live singers and a Motocross VS Quarter Horse event. The East to West Coast Rodeo Championship Finals were relocated from the Central Coast to Orange five years ago after being held successfully on the Central Coast for fifteen years. The event has continued to be every bit as successful in Orange, with spectators flocking to the rodeo each year in their thousands. Tickets will be for sale on the day at the gate.
