IMAGE: Joy Beattie standing with the free information table at Canowindra Pharmacy.
Talk it Out to Beat the Black Dog Canowindra woman Joy Beattie is a passionate advocate for mental health and is committed to breaking the stigma surrounding depression and anxiety in the community. October is NSW Mental Health Month and this year Joy has brought back the free information table at Canowindra Pharmacy to help spread awareness and understanding about mental illness. “The focus is on depression and anxiety in young people who are sometimes overlooked,” said Joy. “Depression can affect young children.” “There are so many resources out there that people aren’t aware of and they don’t know where they can get information from. I want to make people aware of where they can find help, and offer them help too. I’ve made it my goal to inform people and put information out there for people to take home.” Through her own experiences with depression and being a distant carer for a child with
bipolar, Joy believes that education and support are the most important aspects of helping someone with mental illness. “Carers have a very important role in supporting people with a mental illness. Sometimes a person with a mental illness can’t explain what they’re going through. If their carer has an understanding, they can help.” The Canowindra Depression Anxiety Awareness Support Group meets every second Tuesday of the month from 5pm to 6pm in the CWA Rooms on Blatchford Street. Anyone is welcome to come along to seek and offer support in a relaxed and confidential environment. Call Joy on 6344 1866 for more information. Check out Joy’s information table at Canowindra Pharmacy to pick up a wristband, postcard and a variety of useful resources to help you or someone you care about. By Rosi Broom

Dear Editor, If you, like me, have trouble with rats, mice and snakes, then I offer this method of excluding them from your aviaries. This is a remedy passed on by an ‘old bloke I met in a pub’ and all you need to do is mix 50% Phenyle* (phenol) and 50% normal kerosene together and add 5 times the quantity achieved with water and spray the mixture around the perimeter of your aviary. In other words 5 water to one part phenol/ kero mix. I use an empty engine oil container with several small holes (1/16 or 2mm) drilled through the cap as a ‘watering’ can. The mixture is absorbed quickly into the soil and where I have had to use it inside the aviary there doesn’t seem to be any detriment to the birds – or at least not as drastic as being killed by a rat. Rodent activity dramatically lessened at my place, and in one instance where I sprayed the mix into and around mouse holes, they abandoned ship rapidly and some that I got
with the mixture were most agitated. The pungent smell that cleans out your sinuses dissipates after a couple of days and you might have to re-apply after a couple of weeks. *Phenyle can be found at Bunnings or Masters in either the wheelie bin cleaners or general cleaners area. In my opinion Scott’s brand is more effective and more concentrated than others and works best. Regards Bob Sherwood Perth Western Australia

An anonymous letter was slipped under the door of the Phoenix office recently stating that the sporting oval in Canowindra should be referred to as “Canowindra Oval”, and not as “Tom Clyburn Oval”. The letter stated that the grandstand at the sports ground is “Tom Clyburn Grandstand” and that the Phoenix had been publishing the wrong information about the oval. Following this we have received a lot of feedback in relation to the name, including the Canowindra Sports Trust who confirmed it was the grandstand and not the oval named after Tom Clyburn, who is known widely throughout town as a wonderful contributor to the sporting community. No disrespect was intended and we would love to do an article on Tom Clyburn. If you would like to contribute, please call the editor on 6344 1846.

Founded on Woodlock bloodlines, Pine Creek have continued with similar breeding objectives for early maturing, good muscling and ease of lambing. The champion ewe came out of the Shorn Ewe Under 1.5 Years Class. Pine Creek also came first and third in the Bare Shorn Ewe Class and sixth in the Ram Lamb. Rams are available for private sale. October is Mental Health Month in NSW and everyone is encouraged to put their mental health first. Make time to see friends and family, maintain a good diet, get regular exercise and enough sleep to reduce the risk factors that can lead to depression and anxiety. Untreated mental health conditions cost Australian workplaces $11 billion a year and are a big risk factor for suicide. IMAGE: Fiona Ferguson standing with a quilt made by Canowindra local Jenny Middleton.
The 4th Airing of the Quilts It was an ancient spring tradition when people who had no modern washing methods used to hang their bedding and quilts out and beat them to eliminate dirt, lice and other nasties. Now the Airing of the Quilts has become a local tradition as each year a variety of coloured and patterned quilts are hung in shop windows and off balconies around town. “It’s a tradition that goes back centuries really,” said Fiona Ferguson, one of the people who helps make this event happen each year. “During hard times, scraps of fabric were used to reline coats and there was a practical side to using and recycling scraps of fabric. Modern quilting is far more sculptured and artistic.” This was the 4th year for Canowindra’s Airing of the Quilts and the displays demonstrated the various skill levels of our regional quilt makers, from amateurs to professionals. “We wanted to create a walking trail around Canowindra. The idea was to get the audience
to wander around and discover the village,” said Fiona. Voters came from Canberra, Tasmania, Forbes, Dubbo, Orange and local surrounding areas. One of the most original and interesting quilts was the sentimental piece by Jenny Middleton hanging in the window of Garden & Montgomery. This family quilt was made using the fabric of many flannelette shirts worn by her sons on the farm. The pieces used in this year’s Airing of the Quilts came from all over the region including Forbes, Parkes, Orange, Sydney and Cowra, with a lot of local work showcased. With no clear winner in the People’s Choice Award and a three-way tie, voting was kept open for an extra three days. The quilt named “William Morris” by Wendy Morrow from Forbes, hanging in K&H Interiors won the Award. By Rosi Broom
Farm innovation and family fun will go hand in hand at the 2015 Australian National Field Days. The third and final day of the event on Saturday 24 October will be a great day out for families. Field Days administration manager Jayne West said it was the third year the ANFD would be held from Thursday to Saturday, allowing the event to cater for a greater range of visitors. Jayne said the 2015 event was already attracting interest from a wide variety of exhibitors, with 90% of the site already booked. The enormous new Cliff Hanger Jumping Castle from Irwin’s Jumping Castles, stilt walkers from First Light Entertainment and the Golden Ridge Animal Farm nursery are just some of the confirmed entertainment exhibitors for the event. There will be a range of demonstrations including fishing, wood-chopping and cooking. The event will run from 22-24 October at Borenore. Entry costs $15 for adults and $5 for school age children with family tickets for $35. Multi-day passes are also available.

Pre-Storm Season Training The stormy season is fast approaching and NSW SES with NRMA Insurance are encouraging some pre-storm season training to get ready. During the past twelve months, volunteers in the Central West Region have responded to over 696 storm callouts. “Getting ready now will give you peace of mind later when the storms hit,” said NSW SES Central West Region Controller Craig Ronan. “It’s that simple.” “Every year we see the effects that storms have on our community,” said Jennifer Cobley, Manager of Partnerships and Programs at NRMA Insurance. “In a typical year almost half of all home claims in NSW result from storms. The storm events in April this year saw this increase to over 75% of all home claims.” “We encourage communities to get ready for storm season by taking simple steps to prepare their homes. A little work now can protect lives and help prevent damage to properties.”
The storm season officially began on 1 October and winds up at the end of April next year. While severe storms can occur at any time during the year, they are more prevalent during this period. Here are the SES tips for pre-storm season training: Know your risk and think about the area you live in and the types of disasters that could affect you. Make a plan for what you will do if a storm affects your area. Visit www.seshomeemergencyplan.com.au to make a plan. Get your home ready by cleaning your gutters, trimming your branches and securing any items in your backyard. Be aware and stay tuned for updates by listening to your local radio station, checking the Australian Bureau of Meteorology website or visiting the NSW SES Facebook page. Look out for each other and share information with your family, friends, neighbours and other people you know may need assistance.

Gardens Of Eden Christine and Richard Nash are pleased to open their garden at Macquarie Fields to the public as part of Canowindra’s Open Garden on Saturday 10 October. Many would know Christine as their infant’s teacher at the local primary school where she taught for many years. Her garden is a testament to years of hard work creating a habitat in which plants can survive the harsh winds and heat of summer. You are invited to come and sit amongst the shade of the trees and take in the peace and tranquilitiy, and forget the world outside exists. Kath and Phil Balcomb are well known locals. Kath is a teacher at Canowindra High School and Phil is renowned in the sheep industry. Their garden has meandering paths amongst the fruit trees and hidden delights. The sound of birds echoes throughout this Garden of Eden. Another garden to delight in is that of David and Jan Harrison. Their home has astounding views of the local area and their cottage garden is as pretty as a picture. Other gardens include Belmont which features huge majestic urns and old brick pathways. Sussex lacks mature trees, so boulders and sculptures are the theme of this garden. Rutherfield has its own creaking windmill in the middle of the garden and you are welcome to enjoy refreshments here served by Cudal Preschool. Oakleigh has been home to Kelvin and Leo-

Get Your Bookings For Baroquefest Two of Australia’s most acclaimed classical string quartets, the Ironwood Chamber Ensembles and Bathurst based Mitchell String Quartet, are coming to Canowindra in less than two weeks from now and the organisers are warning that bookings for the landmark concerts are running out fast! The quartets are the star attractions of Canowindra’s inaugural Baroquefest concerts, scheduled for October 16 to 18 and featuring the best music of the era of Mozart, Handel, Haydn and Bach. In the first of five concerts covering the three-day event, the Ironwood Ensemble will be presenting music of the composers who inspired Haydn at All Saints Church at 7pm on Friday 16 October. Soprano Helen Bennett and trumpeter Mathew Gately will be guest performers. Saturday there’ll be a special matinee performance at the Age of Fishes Museum featuring world famous oboist Laith Ismael and Bathurst harpsichordist Tracey Callinin. That day will also see a free evening performance at the canowindra@home Twilight Food and Wine Market in Memorial Park, followed by the Mitchell String Quartet’s concert at 7:30pm in All Saints Church. The final concert on Sunday will be another alfresco matinee at the Wallington Winery, renowned for their fine organic wines and straw bale winery building.
At 12 noon, the gorgeous grounds of Wallington Winery and Vineyard will come alive with music lovers and the sound of Baroque. With sensational rolling views across the Lachlan Valley, this will be a perfect way to spend a Sunday afternoon with friends of family enjoying fine music and local culture. With Andrew Baker on violin, Tracey Callinan on harpsichord and Sybbie Georgiou on cello, this concert will be a day to remember so save the date, plan a picnic and prepare for a culture fix. “It’s quite a coup to get a commitment from a group of this calibre to perform in a town as small as Canowindra,” said Richard Statham, Chairman of Canowindra Fine Music. The three day music festival brings the two major ensembles and other musicians from the Central West region and beyond to celebrate a resurgence of Baroque music, a style of Western art music composed between 1600 and 1750. Seats will be limited at all sessions so music lovers are urged to book now. Session tickets cost $20 for matinees and $25 for evening performances, with some tickets available at the door for most performances. There are also special Gold, Silver and Bronze packages. To reserve your seat or find out more go to www.canowindra.org.au/baroquefest or email info@canowindrafinemusic.com.au.

With all the renovating and building at the old Riverbank Gallery in the last month, the question on everyone’s lips is what and when? Owner and operator Tommy Jeffs from Deli Lama happily answers those questions. “I wanted to create something really special for the people in and around Canowindra Town,” Tommy said. “A place for family reunion dinners, wedding anniversary parties, Christening and birthday dinners or lunches, Christmas parties, staff parties and the like.” “We have three areas; the sumptuous Tuscany Dining Room which seats 30-40 people, the Southampton Dining Room for private dinner parties of 10-12 people or the Terrace Area which seats 12-20 people for tapas or seafood.” “Menus are discussed and we provide all your requirements like linen, fine china and crystal wear to suit all tastes and budgets.” “We have already hosted a family reunion and a sensational 80th birthday lunch which was special,” said Tommy. “We are already booked for a small wedding with the bride getting dressed in the Audrey Hepburn Suite and getting married in our garden with a finger food reception,” Tommy said. There are also two gorgeous rooms for Bed and Breakfast with a luxurious bathroom and guest library. Let’s hope Tommy’s new venture is a great addition to this thriving town.
