Miso Soup Sensations A fusion of culture, love, family and spirituality came together on Saturday night at All Saints’ Anglican Church with Awase Miso, an improvisational cooking performance involving music, movement and story-telling of miso soup. The audience sat down and the performers made an entrance with the ingredients, chatting amongst themselves in Japanese. As the preparation and cooking began, so did the music and expressive movement as each of the four artists collaborated in real time, communicating with the audience what miso soup represented for them. The sounds of the cooking were fed through a microphone, reverbing and echoing throughout and mixing it with the live sounds of the piano, flute and synthesiser. The artists shared highly personal stories
relating to their experiences with miso soup and after the soup was cooked, the audience could eat together with the performers to complete a feast for all senses: touch, smell, taste, sight and sound. “Once we knew we were doing it in a church, the performance took on a whole new aspect,” said Sydney-based artist Mayu Kanamori. “We told stories about giving, nurturing and providing. We made reference to that which is sacred and greater than us as individuals.” “We love Canowindra, we want to come back! Everybody we’ve met are such beautiful people,” Mayu said. “It was a great night,” said Richard Statham from Canowindra. “People were mad if they read the ad and didn’t come. It was an absolute unique performance; we loved it!”

The Editor, It surprises many Canowindra people that a town of this size provides two Pathology Laboratory Collection Centres, via Laverty Pathology and Healthscope Pathology. Patients who attend either of the two medical practices in the town have the right to choose which of the two centres they attend when referred for pathology tests, this is regardless of the centre which is nominated on the Pathology Request Form, issued. It behoves the two medical practices in the town to refer patients impartially to both centres, in equal numbers. Should one of the pathology centres be exclusively endorsed by
a practice, then one of the centres will most likely close. At present Healthscope is staffed by a trained local person, while Laverty operates on a “fly in fly out” staffing arrangement on each day the centre is open. It is desirable that both centres continue to operate on a daily basis which can only happen if both are supported equally by the town. Yours sincerely, Bill Barwood Canowindra

A number of eucalyptus trees will be removed from Canowindra Swimming Pool in the interest of public safety. Following advice from an arborist, Cabonne Council will take out the eight trees prior to the coming swimming season. The decision follows a recent incident when a large branch fell on to the pool grounds. The Council will consider providing shade shelters at the pool when it determines its 2016-17 budget. Congratulations to the winners of the 100 Club! Lorraine Daly and Gordon Traves both won $100 in the 100 Club. Canowindra’s Creative Veteran Field Days Canowindra resident Derek Maitland has had an exciting and colourful career as a writer, filmographer and creative artist, taking him across the world through a myriad of cultures and societies. “I immigrated to Australia when I was 14 and it was a hard experience,” says Derek. “I suddenly thought ‘I’ve got to get out of Australia’.” Derek travelled from Australia to Hong Kong in 1966 to be faced with the culture shock he’d been craving. “I hit the world wanting to do everything, experience everything. There was no limit and that’s been my life ever since.” A fascinating career in journalism saw Derek as a correspondent for the Vietnam War, on the scene of the Brighton Hotel bombing when an attempt was made on Margaret Thatcher’s life and wounded in the Middle East by a rocket propelled grenade blast that blew out his eardrums. As a journalist, Derek explored another passion – novel writing. “I became a novelist and wrote four books,”
says Derek. “That was my big thing aside from journalism right up until the mid-80s to early 90s.” At the same time, Derek was publishing a travel magazine in Hong Kong and doing a lot of travel writing but after the Tiananmen Square massacre halted travel to China, the magazine collapsed. Derek and his wife Jan turned to film, working around the world doing video productions for top corporations before returning to Sydney in 2000. “As the big time filming ended, I got this urge to paint,” says Derek. “So I started painting.” Now retired from journalism, Derek uses his days to paint, work on his next novel, tend his garden, film and study philosophy in a life that encompasses many types of creativity. “I’m never bored. If I get fed up with painting, I go do some video work. If I get fed up with that, I’ll go and do something else.” By Rosi Broom
The important role of horses in Australian agriculture and recreation will be recognised with a new exhibition at the 2015 Australian National Field Days. The Horse Expo will be a specialised area devoted to equine exhibitors and demonstrations, featuring a horse arena and exhibitor marquees. Demonstrations during the three-day event will feature many aspects of horse husbandry, including training, dental care, shoeing, saddle fitting and reproduction and embryo transfer. Style, food and flower arranging will also come together under one roof at the event with the Style Pavilion and Marketplace the perennial favourites at the ANFD, featuring fashion parades, demonstrations and an array of boutique retailers of fashion, homewares and gifts. The Country Women’s Association cooking demonstrations are always a highlight. These creative cooks will demonstrate a variety of dishes with their colourful ingredient, including savoury dishes and desserts using both fresh and tinned beetroot.

2015 Boomerang March
IMAGE: “Ted and Shirl; Grey Nomads” by Julie McCarron-Benson is a semi-finalist in the 2015 Doug Moran Portrait Prize.
Prize Connection
Long-time Canowindra residents will be interested to know that Julie McCarron-Benson, the eldest daughter of John and Betty McCarron who lived in Tilga Street, is a semi-finalist in the 2015 Doug Moran Portrait Prize. Some may remember that Julie won many art prizes at the Canowindra Show as a young person and she has been able to go back to art in a mature age. Julie has had several exhibitions and works mainly in acrylics on the representational side of art, mostly in portraits and landscapes. As she says, you can recognise what she paints. The portrait is entitled “Ted and Shirl: Grey Nomads”. It is 75x100cms and is painted in acrylics on a stretched canvas. Julie has painted the couple seated in their car which they have adapted for camping, presenting the painting as through the observer is perhaps giving Ted and Shirl directions. The Doug Moran National Portrait Prize, now in its 27th year is an annual Australian portrait prize which encourages both excellence and creativity in contemporary Australian portraiture by asking artists to interpret the look and personality of a chosen sitter. Selection of the thirty finalists will take place in the coming weeks and the winner of the 2015 Doug Moran National Portrait Prize will be announced on Wednesday 28 October. Good luck Julie!
A re-enactment of the World War I “Boomerangs” recruiting March will take place on 31 October throughout towns across the state including Canowindra in a celebration of the volunteer values which have been epitomised in the ANZAC Spirit. “The original marchers were the ultimate volunteers, signing up for military service and heading to a war that was no longer an unknown adventure,” says Cooee March 2015 organiser Helen Templeton. The original marches from Parkes, Bogan Gate, Alectown, Condobolin and Peak Hill left Parkes on 19 January 1916, picking up recruits along the route through Forbes, Eugowra, Gooloogong, Canowindra, Billimari, Cowra, Woodstock, Lyndhurst, Mandurama, Carcoar, Blayney, Newbridge, Georges Plains and Perthville. A contingent of 202 men marched into Bathurst on 5 February 1916. This re-enactment will commence and finish a few months earlier than the historically correct dates but the route will still pass through most of the communities visited on the original march. Participants will travel from Bathurst to Sydney and join with participants of six other recruiting march re-enactments to attend the Remembrance Day service in Martin Place. Organisers of the march are seeking out representatives from Canowindra to be the town’s mascot in the march. “We want all the towns to own it,” said Cooee March Secretary Kim Templeton. “It’s your history as much as anyone else’s.” Contact Kim on 0447 447 458 for further information.

My House My Home Renovate or Build? Deciding whether to renovate an older building or knock it down and rebuild can be difficult. The decision to favour renovation hangs heavily upon determining whether the existing building has sufficient merit. When starting a new project, why would you think about keeping the building that already exists on the site? Especially if it does not work exactly with your new design concept. Apart from the financial benefits or heritage requirements, you may be drawn to the idea of making use of existing materials and all that has gone into their manufacture and construction. History has shown that building structures will always outlive function and this means there will always be a constant supply of existing buildings ready for reuse. Therefore, there are many good reasons to spend some time examining whether working with existing buildings is a worthwhile pursuit before deciding otherwise. A renovation, even more than a new build, takes consideration of ESD principles, structure and costs, applied thoughtfully and imaginatively to the client brief to make the most of what an existing home has to offer. It can be thought of as a puzzle where the pieces connect on a myriad of considerations. So how is this puzzle solved? There is not a one-size-fits-all approach, as each job has different constraints. A good strategy is to understand the brief, understand the existing conditions and understand the structure. Creation is always a
fluid process. There are no fixed rules, just the principles to be followed and weighed as appropriate to the needs of the job and client. Create a beauty. An ugly building will not last long so take time to make your solution artful. Be imaginative. Remove as little of the existing structure as necessary to fulfil the brief. Re-use and recycle because there is nothing better than parts of a house that carry a story. Reused materials not only tick numerous environmental boxes, but importantly bring a history and hold memories that can give a house soul and grounding, locking it in to a human narrative of time and place. Use the new to compliment the old. New additions can be designed to compensate for the shortcomings of the existing. Insulate new and old. While a reliable rule of thumb for cost effective renovation is to focus on the area of structural works and touch other areas as little as possible, insulation of the existing building should not be neglected. Infuse with the winter sun – the secret to high passive performance in cool to mild climates is infusing winter sunlight to as many rooms as possible. An added benefit is brighter, healthier homes with more connection to the outdoors! To find out more about your building or renovation needs, visit Design West Architecture today at 44 Macquarie Street Cowra.

Climbing High Climbing plants create great options in the garden. Whether you want to hide or soften an unattractive fence or wall, or you have a pergola, arch or other structure that you want to look spectacular covered in flowersclimbers are your answer. Most of the climbers suited to our region and climate are deciduous, but I’ll mention a few evergreen climbers first. Chinese star jasmine (Trachelospermum) has attractive dark, glossy green leaves and fragrant white, star shaped flowers in spring-summer. A native plant, Hardenbergia, is another evergreen climber which comes in purple (Happy Wanderer) and white (Free ‘n Easy) flowering forms. Banksia roses (yellow and white flowering) are thornless, semi evergreen climbers that are popular for covering ugly sheds or chook pens. If the structure you want covered is small and the position is sunny and frost protected, ivy leaf geranium (Pelargonium) is another option. The deciduous climbing plants best suited to our region include climbing roses, clematis, wisteria, Virginia creeper and ornamental grape. As always, there is an almost endless range of climbing rose colours and types. My favourites are Pierre de Ronsard (light pink), Altissimo (red), Crepescule (apricot, thornless), Pinkie and Iceberg (white). Virginia creeper and its “cousin”, Boston Ivy (Parthenocissus), are perhaps the quickest growing of all deciduous climbing plants. Clematis is a deciduous climber that comes in several forms-the common Montana type which produces masses of medium sized white or pink star type flowers. The hybrid type produces larger, spectacular coloured flowers from white to yellow, to deep purple. Wisteria probably provide the most memorable spring flower shows and many of us know of huge old, gnarled wisteria vines growing over fences and sheds for decades. Dot’s Birthday Surprise About 70 of Doris “Dot” Pfeiffer’s friends and family gathered at Morris Park on Saturday 3 October to celebrate her 80th birthday, a milestone event. While Dot knew something was in the air, her husband Les was able to gather extended family, friends from all walks of life, neighbours past and present and fellow workers from Canowindra Cornerstone Community for a surprise BBQ in the park. “I arranged it all about 5 months ago, but she didn’t hear a word,” said Les. It was quite a surprise when Les and Dot’s five daughters arrived from out of town to take Dot out for a birthday cuppa The biggest surprise of all came with the arrival of Jolene from South Africa, a Rotary Exchange student who Dot and Les hosted in 1977. On Sunday, immediate family gathered at Canowindra Hotel for a tasty meal. Anecdotes of “Nanna” were shared before the cake was cut and Dot was presented with a photobook covering 79+ years of her life. Dot said she hopes there will be no more surprises for a while.

Canowindra Sport KEARNS/KELLY MEMORIAL GOLF DAY
The Kearns Memorial Golf Day has been run by the Kearns Family for over 30 years, remembering those members of the family who have passed. Terry Windsor and Ivy Kearns were well known residents of Canowindra where they spent all their married life and raised their children; Tony, Daryl, Cheryl (Loomes) and Shayne. When Terry passed, the family commemorated his life with a Memorial Golf Day at the Canowindra Golf Club. The family has since experienced the passing of several family members; Ivy, Tony, Daryl, Clarrie and Shayne and Mardie’s son Ben who was on the heart transplant list when he suffered a stroke that caused irreparable brain damage. Ben expressed his consent to have his organs and tissues donated, giving the gift of a better life to the recipients of his organs. This year also marked the passing of a close friend of the Kearns Family, Peter “JJ” Kelly. JJ leaves his loving wife and boys Wayne, Paul, Matthew and Mark. The Kearns Family Memorial Day will now be known as the Kearns/ Kelly Memorial Day to honour the close relationship between the families. A Memorial Trophy has been created by the families to commemorate the lives of Ben and JJ.
Everyone is invited to participate on the day with prizes for golfers, non-golfers, men, ladies and juniors. A BBQ lunch will be prepared with refreshments around the course. Bring your family and enjoy the day!

The AGM was held with all positions filled and Rhonda thanked everyone for their valuable contributions over the last year. All our thoughts are with Eddie Roberts & his family.
