From Farm Gate to Asian Plate

Parkes was a political hot spot last Friday when Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack and NSW Deputy Premier John Barilaro put the Inland Rail project on the right track by signing a landmark bilateral agreement. The Intergovernmental Agreement between the Federal and NSW Governments was signed at the Parkes Railway Station and makes way for the commencement of works on the multi-billion dollar Inland Rail project in NSW. NSW is the second state after Victoria to sign up to the significant project providing consent for the Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) to deliver Inland Rail in NSW. Deputy Prime Minister said it was a landmark moment for the project and a significant day for Parkes destined to become a

major hub on the 1,700km long line. “Henry Parkes, after which this town was named, had a vision for the nation and Inland Rail is sharing in that vision.” He said 60% or 1,050km of the line will be in NSW linking up the ports of Melbourne and Brisbane boosting the state’s gross domestic product (GDP) to $2.6 billion per year. “This means the world for Parkes and all of Australia’s farmers and small businesses taking our products from farm gate to Asian plate.” Deputy Premier Barilaro congratulated Parkes on its vision, saying as a logistics centre for Inland Rail, the town would become an inland port. “Parkes is going to be a very different place because of Inland Rail.” Continued on page 4

To the community of the Parkes Shire, It has been my great pleasure to have served you as a Councillor over nearly 35 years. I am very proud of the decisions that Council has made which have seen our wonderful Shire grow and prosper. I believe that Parkes and the Central West are in a unique situation where they are on the verge of significant investments and economic opportunity. I believe that our Shire and the wider community need a strong leader who will take the message to Sydney to ensure that our region gets its fair share of economic investment from the State Government. This is why I have decided to stand for pre-selection for the National Party for the State seat of Orange. I will continue to serve as Mayor during the pre-selection process and if successful the ensuing months leading up to the election. It has been an honour and privilege to serve this community and I trust you will appreciate and understand this new direction I seek to embark on. Yours sincerely, Mayor Ken Keith OAM site, www.parkes.nsw.gov.au Have an enjoyable weekend, Cr Ken Keith OAM Mayor of Parkes Shire

QUESTION of the week

Parkes student Hannah Dun was absolutely thrilled last weekend walking off with several prizes at the 2018 Forbes Talent Quest. She won first prize in the Junior category (9-12 years), first prize for Australian Song (up to 17 years), second prize for gospel (up to 17 years), as well as Overall Junior Champion! She also won a professional guitar. Well done Hannah!

Mother’s Day Muster: In a special tribute to all mothers the Parkes and District Country Music Association will once again host its Mother’s Day Muster on Sunday from 1 to 5pm. The idea is to take mum to lunch at the Services Club and pop upstairs for the Muster or come to the Muster and take Mum for dinner and the club’s Sunday night draw. Guest artist is the very popular Charmaine Pout. Walk-up artists are also welcome. The April Muster was well attended with guest artist Rhonda Tomlinson from Dubbo. Peak Hill Muster plans are well in hand for Sunday, 1st July at the Peak Hill Services Club.

People can nominate to join any of the committees in Narromine, Gilgandra, Narrabri and the North Star to Border section. The committees will consist of up to 15 people and each will have an independent chair. Committee meeting dates and locations will be advertised and will be open to the public and the media. More information is available at Inlandrail.com.au or by calling 1800 732 761 or emailing inlandrailnsw@artc.com.au. April 2018 Hottest On Record: Australia’s warmest April on record (for mean maximum temperature) has just been confirmed, with multiple records broken across the nation, according to the latest Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) data. The BOM’s summary also shows that the mean monthly temperature was the second hottest for April, climbing 2.38°C above average, with daytime temperatures reaching exceptionally high levels in each state. Alongside this record-breaking heat, Australia also experienced below average rainfall with last month going down as the driest April in almost a decade. April 9 was named the hottest Australian April day on record, with a national average temperature of 34.97 °C.

What do you think the Police can do more of in Parkes?

Hayley Hofman: Community engagement – days like Coffee with a Cop are very important as it gives the Police more of a presence and people get to know them. That makes them feel safer.

Rhyse Forrestal: It would be good to educate people living with disabilities on safety and crime prevention as many of them are not aware of what to do to keep themselves safe.

Kindred Beauty Lounge: Pamper packs and vouchers are still available for Mother’s Day. Pop in and grab one for Sunday. Inland Rail Community Consultative Committees: The Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) is calling for nominations for four Inland Rail Community Consultative Committees in NSW. There will be three committees for the 307km greenfield Narromine to Narrabri section of the project; and a committee for the 37km greenfield North Star to NSW/Queensland border section.

Around six thousand ABBA fans from across the country converged on Trundle over the weekend. Attending the Trundle ABBA Festival were music journalist Glenn A Baker and Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack.

Six Students Serve Community For One Week

Six young students from Canada and America have been active in the Parkes community this week volunteering their help. The team from the Capernwray Bible School in Moss Vale came to Parkes for the very first time as part of their community involvement week on invitation from the Parkes Anglican Church. According to Director of the Capernwray Bible School Peter Thomas there are 17 teams across Australia, including Forbes. They take in 45 students every year from all over the world. “Many of them see it as a gap year before they go to university, or taking a break from studies, to grow their personal faith,” said Peter. The Parkes team had a busy programme helping out with the toy library, gardening, visiting old age homes, and the Christian School, sharing their lives at church services, as well as organising a Family Fun Day with the Forbes team for tomorrow.

The fun day, open to the whole community, will be at Lions Park from 2 to 4pm on Saturday with live music, games, face painting, traditional races and a sausage sizzle. “My time in Australia so far has been really cool,” said one of the students, Faith Pogoda. “I have seen my faith grow and have experienced what it is to live in a Christian community.” She thinks Australia is awesome and loves seeing the different landscapes. “Parkes is really wonderful. It is amazing how festivals have drawn the community together.” Troy Friesen loves Australia. “I was here two years ago and it is great to be back. The people are as friendly as in Canada, and Parkes is very welcoming. I am excited to be here.” On a personal level he has seen his knowledge of the Bible grow. “We have become great friends and it is really cool to be involved in different churches.”

He said the project would not only grow regional communities and bring additional government services, but also reduce congestion on roads. “Inland Rail has the potential to completely reinvigorate parts of regional NSW, well beyond the thousands of jobs that will be created in the construction phase,” he said. Construction on the Inland Rail project is due to commence within six months on the Parkes to Narromine section with 14,000 tonnes of steel rail delivered at Peak Hill in January. The project will create a direct rail freight connection between Melbourne and Brisbane capable of moving double stacked freight containers of up to 1.8km long at speeds of up to 120km/h. Once operational, Inland Rail will attract more freight to rail, diverting traffic from the Newell, Hume and Pacific Highways, and in turn freeing up space in the Sydney Metro area for more passenger services.

Wellness Wise Put Dry Mouth To Bed Have you ever woken up with a mouth as dry as sandpaper? For some, it’s all too common. And while you (and your mouth) may feel better after a glass of water, there are other things you can do to limit dry mouth, also known as xerostomia, during sleep. • Put a humidifier in your bedroom. Humidifiers help to increase moisture levels in the air. • Don’t drink caffeinated beverages or alcohol in the evening before bed—both tend to dry out the mouth. • Drink water or other sugarless beverages throughout the day to help keep you hydrated into the night.

Stay Hearing Fit For Quality Of Life You go to the gym to keep strong, fit and healthy, so why neglect your ears? As we get older, it is important to stay at our physical and mental best. In Australia, one in six people have hearing loss and this rate doubles for those over the age of 60. However, on average, most people wait seven years before seeking help. You go to the doctor to get your blood pressure checked, so why not consider a hearing check. Australian Hearing is the nation’s leading hearing specialist as the largest provider of free services and government-funded hearing devices to eligible people including pensioners, veterans, children under 26 and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders over 50. Free hearing checks will be done in Parkes on 15th May at Parkes GP and 29th May at Currajong Medical.

YOUR HEALTH Matters

Asthma Awareness Do You Use Your Inhaler Correctly? Did you know 90% of Australians don’t use their inhalers correctly, despite the fact that 75% of long-term inhaler users have false confidence in their technique? Incorrect inhaler technique can lead to 50% higher risk of hospitalisation from asthma or COPD, more side effects like hoarse throat and mouth infections, and flare-ups due to poor asthma control. It is estimated that 40,000 Australians are hospitalised, and 400 Australians die yearly from asthma. In recent years, a number of new inhalers have been added to the market, increasing the chance for confusion among patients. Parkes Pharmacy has the new range of Able Spacers and Flow tone whistle. They are antibacterial, antistatic and come with a coaching whistle. The coaching whistle is great for children when paired with the free download ‘Rafi Tone’ App. This is a wonderful incentive tool for children. The staff at Parkes Pharmacy are trained and able to assist customers with their inhaler enquiries and the pharmacist are able to conduct assessments of your inhaler technique and provide training and education if using a spacer for the first time. A small change in how you use your Asthma inhaler can make a big difference to how well you breathe. Talk to our pharmacist today.

Another Feather In Parkes ‘Crown’

Take 20,000 Elvis Presley fans, add 200,000 solar panels and a whole lot of sheep, and what do you get? Parkes not only plays host to Australia’s largest Elvis Festival, but is now also aiming to become the ‘King of Renewable Energy’. The Climate Council released a video last week celebrating Parkes’ progress as a renewable energy powerhouse, against the backdrop of its iconic Parkes Elvis Festival. According to the Climate Council release the Parkes community, hit hard by the millennium drought, started looking at renewable energy more than a decade ago. We were a founding member of the Climate Council’s Cities Power Partnership, and was one of the biggest and earliest adopters of rooftop solar in the country. Getting us well under way to adopting the title of ‘King of Renewable Energy’ is the recent switching on of the 55MW solar farm powering more than 20,000 local homes. “We are delighted to be showcased in The Climate Council’s latest social media campaign,” said Parkes Mayor Ken Keith. “The Climate Council capitalised on this year’s Parkes Elvis Festival, producing a light-hearted video about our solar successes, but with a serious message about climate change.” The video, filmed during the Elvis Festival, features the Mayor, a local solar energy champion and farmer, in one of his famous Elvis outfits talking about why it’s “Now or Never” when it comes to taking steps to tackle climate change in regional and rural

Australia. Climate Council Acting CEO Dr Martin Rice said the enthusiasm of the Parkes community for solar power was a great example of the grassroots energy revolution sweeping regional Australia. “Parkes is already world-famous for its Elvis Festival, but today it’s building a big reputation as a major centre for renewable energy innovation”, he said. “It’s time for a little less conversation and a little more action on renewable energy in this country, and towns like Parkes are showing us the way forward.” Mayor Ken Keith added: We, as a community and council, will continue to take as much action as we can to embrace renewable resources.” Watch the video here: http://www.climatecouncil.org.au/parkes-is-the-king-of-renewables The Climate Council is Australia’s leading climate change communications organisation. The council provides authoritative, expert and evidence-based advice on climate change to the media, policymakers and the wider Australian community.

Library Survey: Tell Them What You Think Do you love the Parkes Shire Library, but would like to see it improve even more? Do your bit and complete the survey to help the staff review the achievements and successes of the library, and the areas where they are not quite providing what the community needs and wants. The Library team is planning the expansion of Parkes Library, and they want to know what the community think about their library. Manager Cultural, Education & Library Services, Shellie Buckle, is looking forward to the survey results. “The Library team reviews its services, collections, opening hours, activities, every three to four years. This process keeps us in touch with community needs, aspirations and expectations”, said Shellie. The survey is an excellent opportunity for the community to tell Council what they think about their local library and the services provided. Even if you don’t currently visit a library, Council would like to hear your views about how you think libraries might attract more people to them for work, study, recreational reading, or to borrow an online or in-library item. The survey can be completed online https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/parkeslibrary. Or visit the library to complete the survey in person. The survey will be open to the community for completion until 15th June. More information about the survey is available from Shellie Buckle on 6861 2338, or shellie. buckle@parkes.nsw.gov.au.

Make Friends And Help The Community The Country Women’s Association (CWA) is the largest women’s organisation in Australia and started in the 1920s as a way for women in rural and regional areas to connect and support one another. “Our goals remain the same in what is a very different social landscape,” said Parkes CWA President Alice Milne. “Women are more connected than ever and yet our fast-paced lifestyle often leave little room for meaningful friendships and community engagement.” Parkes CWA Branch offers a diverse

range of opportunities, including a commitment to empowering women and families. “Last year, we learnt how to make soft cheeses from fresh goats milk, we even milked the goats!” said Alice. “We also learned the finer points on decorating cupcakes with different piping techniques.” “If you are a woman, young or mature, we would love you to join us! You don’t need any skills, just a desire to make friends and help out in the community.” The next meeting is on Wednesday, 16th May at 5.30pm at the Pink Orchid.

A line of seven toddlers walked into Wholesome Blend on Tuesday morning to enjoy their ‘Coffee with a Cop’! For the second year in a row young and older turned up for an opportunity to ‘tackle’ the Police with their questions and concerns, or to just have a relaxed yarn about all matters police. “We just want to listen,” said Senior Constable Daniel Greef. “We are not making any speeches today. This is not a volatile situation, and it is just nice to have the time to do it.” As the coffee shop buzzed with conversation, Daniel said many people had questions about Police work. “They have seen police shows on TV and want to know how it happens in real life, and what the different roles are.” He said most of the feedback they had received at last year’s event were very positive. “We were told to keep doing what we are doing.” Shirley Edwards of Tinker Tots Family Day

Scammers are trying to get iTunes vouchers from potential victims, the Police have warned. According to Senior Constable Daniel Greef of the Parkes Police several reports have come in of scammers contacting people to tell them their computer may have a fault and they need to pay to repair it. They add that the tax office has a warrant for their arrest and they can pay them with iTunes cards or to pay a release fee for an additional payment, such as from Centrelink. “The scammer demands that the victim attends a local shop and buy iTunes gift cards to pay, sometimes thousands of dollars of value,” said Daniel. “If questioned at the shop, the scammer warns the victim to say they are purchasing the cards for their children or grandchildren.” Businesses selling iTunes card are encouraged to be aware of this scam and to question their customers if they are buying large amounts of cards to help protect them. “If someone asks you to pay for anything with iTunes cards, it is a scam,” said Daniel. There are no legitimate businesses or government departments that will ask for payment with iTunes cards. If you fall for this scam it is virtually impossible to get your money back. According to Apple iTunes cards can only be used with their App, iTunes or iBook Store, as well as for Apple membership. If you have been a victim of a scam, please report it via www.scamwatch.gov. au. The information in this article has been obtained from ScamWatch.

The autumn weather is perfect for gardening. Vegetables to grow in autumn include spinach, green beans and peas, as well as herbs like coriander, garlic, parsley and thyme. In Parkes you can grow herbs outdoors all year round or grow them in pots or garden beds. All you really need is decent soil, water and sunshine, and before you know it you will have a herb crop on hand to use in salads, cooking and baking.

OUTDOORKids Make the most of the beautiful autumn weather and take the kids on an autumn scavenger hunt. It doesn’t matter if you head out on a hike, go to the park or just stay in your backyard, it is a guaranteed adventure. Here are some ideas what to search for, or go online for many more. Look for something that is alive; a leaf with jagged edges; an interesting weed; a dry leaf; a leaf with smooth edges; a seed from a tree; a twig; a pinecone; a handful of grass; a feather; a branch with leaves on it; a red leaf; a yellow leaf; a green leaf; a smooth stone; three little pebbles; a leaf bud; a piece of bark and a tiny bit of moss.

Concussion With pre-season training for winter sports commencing it is a relevant time to discuss sports-related head injuries and consider what can be done to prevent or minimise the impact a concussion injury has on an athlete. In the medical world, a concussion is considered a mild traumatic brain injury. Concussions occur not only from direct contact of the head with a solid object, but also when indirect forces cause the brain to move rapidly within the skull such as a fall on the buttocks or a whiplash injury. Contrary to popular belief, you can sustain a concussion without losing consciousness. Common symptoms of concussion include headaches, memory and concentration difficulty, decreased balance and coordination, drowsiness, vomiting and light or sound sensitivity. The ability to perform normal activities with the same speed, reaction time and precision as prior to the injury is often significantly altered. When managed appropriately most signs and symptoms are temporary and resolve within seven to 10 days, however complications can occur including prolonged duration of symptoms and increased susceptibility to further injury. There is also growing concern about the potential long-term consequences of multiple concussions. The brain needs time to heal and rest after a concussion. This includes rest from both physical activity and cognitive loads. Return to sport too early increases the chances of another concussion. It is worth considering performing baseline testing such as a SCAT-3 or King Devick Test in the pre-season to establish a benchmark offering comparison when an athlete has sustained a concussion. This helps determine when they are ready to return to sport. “For the fitness of you.” Linda Reilly

The first ever Northparkes Family Day was held recently to provide employees with an exclusive opportunity to take their families and friends to site to show them where they work every day. The day was a huge success with over 350 people taking part in the activities for young and old. Managing Director of Northparkes, Jim Fowler said: “The Family Day was a way of giving back to and rewarding our employees. It was fantastic to see everyone filled with so much pride whilst touring our operations. Having the opportunity to bring your family and friends to site is really special and not something you get to do every day in the mining industry.” Tours were available to the ore processing facility, the underground SCADA Control Room, the underground surface operations, the laboratory, the warehouse and the workshop. According to Chase Dingle, Superintendent Community, Environment and Farms, the kids’ corner with two jumping castles, a rock climbing wall and face painting, and the heavy machinery display were very popular. Local artist Jordie Dwyer also performed and a range of food were on offer prepared by Parkes Rotary Club and Parkes Quota Club Inc. Jim said he felt proud to receive such positive feedback from employclimbing wall at the kids’ corner ees and their families and friends on The were one of the main attractions at the the event. Boars Beat Bathurst

Parkes Boars came away the happier of the two teams following two tough and physical games at University Oval, Bathurst last week. 2nd grade: CSU 17 Parkes Boars 15 A couple of absentees led to interesting playing combinations, particularly centres Rusi Lawanikula and captain Ethan Koseffe. They impressed through hard dog defence and powerful running and Rusi scored a well earnt try early on. Going into half 5-5, the Boars came out with new energy and vigour. Debutant Hugh Woods put the Boars on the front foot and superb phases of play was rewarded with Karl Oliver crossing over under the posts to make the score 10-5. CSU scored the equalising try, while Boars’ promising youngster Johan Ruzgas crossed over for his first try of the season, but CSU crossed over at the end, and converted to win 17-15. 1st Grade CSU 25 Parkes 29 With Dan Ryan out for the Boars, Coach Myles opted for the smallest pack to ever take to the field. The size difference upfront seemed to make no difference with Brock Mattocks and

Jimmy Lowe making big tackles and burrowing runs. CSU started the scoring with a drop goal. Parkes’ Dylan Hood scored the first try. CSU answered almost instantaneously, but Parkes refused to let them get away with well taken chances by Jim Sellings and Poncho Nash. With a forward driving try for Campbell Earsmen, Boars were four points up. A well stolen ball from Ben Ryan and a scrummaging masterclass by Jim Lowe earned the boars a spectacular and well-deserved win. By Ben Powlay

Open Invitation At Eugowra Rifle Club The Eugowra Rifle Club held a successful ‘come and try me day’ last week at the Sunnyside Rifle Range with several potential new members from Parkes, Cowra and Grenfell experiencing what fullbore rifle shooting is all about. Despite glorious conditions, a constantly changing south-west to south-east breeze blowing into shooters faces were less than ideal for good scoring at 600 yards, catching out even the most experienced shooters. Scores were: • Target Rifle A grade: Ian Ward 48-2, 49-3 – 97-5; David Jolly 45-3, 46-2 – 91-5. • Target Rifle B grade: John Bray 41-1 one stage only. • Target Rifle C grade: John Farquhar 45-1, 46-1 – 91-2; Adam Wild 39-0 one stage only. • F Standard B grade: Christian Martin 53-0, 51-2 – 104-2; Peter Harris 46-0, 56-3 – 102-3; Alan Noble 50-0, 52-1 – 102-1; Sarah Meyer 23-0 one stage only. • F Open: James Maloy 49-0, 55-4 – 104-4; Wes Robinson 50-2, 52-3 – 102-5; Tony Leonard 48-1, 48-0 – 96-1. The Eugowra Rifle Club extends an open invitation to anyone interested to come and try the sport on any weekend. Rifles, ammunition and experienced club members are always on hand to provide tuition and pass on knowledge. Shooting starts at 1:30pm, firing two stages of ten shots each at a total cost of approximately $30. Contacting David Jolly after hours on 6863 AIMING… Christian Martin from Parkes gets into 5575. position.
