FIGHT THE FIRE… Little Jentzen McCatcheon gets good advice from retained fire fighter Cameron Lawrence on how to handle a fire hose.
Open Day At Fire Station Ignites Interest
Close to 400 little faces lit up with amazement, excitement and wonder as local fire fighters put their skills on display at the annual open day of Fire & Rescue NSW in Parkes last Saturday. The station came alive as some of the 18 retained fire fighters in Parkes demonstrated fire safety in the kitchen and how to cut open a wreck, while the kids could hold a fire hose blasting out a stream of water, climb into a fire truck, colour in or get face paint. Organiser Simon King said they were taken by surprise with the turnout which had doubled from previous years with approximately 600 people attending.
“There is a lot of interest in the new fire station to be built.” The NSW Government announced in March a state-of-the-art fire station will be built on the block just behind the current station. Simon emphasised the main focus of the day was to highlight fire safety in the home. Craig Buckle and Nicole Varcoe demonstrated how easy a fire could start in the kitchen when you are not “looking when you’re cooking”. When a pan on the stove starts burning, the most important thing to remember is to not try and put it out with water, but to smother it with a fire blanket.

Simon said all home fire safety equipment were available at hardware stores, and he encouraged home owners to acquire fire blankets and fire extinguishers, and install and maintain smoke alarms. The Parkes Fire Station receives between 250 and 300 calls per year, including rescue incidents, of which 60% are late at night. Fire & Rescue NSW fire fighters are trained to handle and assist with chemical spills, car accidents and natural disasters to prevention, education and humanitarian relief. ‘Healing’ Effect Of Medical School Plans to build a rural medical school in Wagga Wagga have been welcomed by students and practitioners. Sam Roberts is a final year medical student at the University of NSW’s Wagga Wagga campus and applauded the move, saying it would open up opportunities for students unable to live and study in metropolitan centres. “The medical school will allow students to study closer to home where they have support,” he said. It was announced in the Federal Budget recently that the Government would invest $95.4 million to establish a medical network including the University of NSW (Wagga Wagga), University of Sydney (Dubbo), Charles Sturt University/Western Sydney University (Orange), Monash University (Bendigo, Mildura) and the University of Melbourne/La Trobe University (Shepparton, Bendigo, Wodonga). Member for Riverina Michael McCor-
mack met with the Rural Medical School Implementation Committee (RMSIC), representatives of the University of NSW, Wagga Wagga general practitioner and obstetrician and medical students to discuss the highly anticipated project. “We are all excited about not only what a dedicated medical school in Wagga Wagga will deliver for this region but also about what the wider network will mean for improved health services in rural and regional NSW and Victoria,” said Michael. “Evidence shows newly-graduated doctors are most likely to choose to live and work in rural areas if they and/or their partner have a rural origin, and also if they have spent a considerable amount of their training time in regional and rural areas.” The head of the University of NSW Medicine’s Wagga campus, Associate Professor John Preddy, said the Wagga Wagga medical school would provide a total medical workforce solution for the Riverina area.
“I think the Federal Government has developed an elegant solution in putting together a network of five rural medical schools,” he said. “By having five schools instead of just one they are not overburdening one individual city.”

JUST A SHORT DRIVE TO
Tullamore Tottenham & Trundle Trundle
Trundle is an easy 55 km drive north-west of Parkes where you will find a rural community with production comprised mostly of wheat, sheep, and cattle farming. Trundle is well known for the annual Bush Tucker Day and the ABBA Festival, but a visit any other time of the year will guarantee you a cold beer and country hospitality. The town’s iconic Trundle Hotel is National Estate listed, and boasts the longest veranda in NSW (87.6 metres) on the widest main street in the state (60 metres). Whilst there has been a hotel on the site since 1888, the current building was constructed in 1912. Its construction from pise mud or compacted earth rendered with cement is unique to Trundle with many other houses in the town built the same way. The ceilings are from pressed metal. Danielle Ward has owned the pub for nine years and with her enthusiasm for restoration, the hotel received a $90,000 grant to help fix it up. The hotel is also the sponsor of three footy teams, and a proud supporter of the annual ABBA Festival.
Tullamore
Tullamore is an hour away from Parkes and is surrounded by picturesque farmland and low rolling hills. The area now known as Tullamore was first called Bullock Creek in 1870 and then Gobondery in 1895. George Tully, who came from Tullamore in Ireland, built a hotel and called it Tullies Exchange Hotel and pressed the point that the town be named Tullamore. He succeeded and the town has been called Tullamore ever since. The Tullamore Hotel embodies the energy of the country with the laid-back atmosphere of a living room. Troy and Anna have owned the pub for seven years and has since supported local events, provided free showers to truckies and in return receives great loyalty from the community. The hotel is the soul of the town – where the beer is cold, yarns are spun and history begins. If you’re looking for somewhere to spend your afternoon, Tullamore Bowling Club is the place to be! It has a quiet, relaxing and friendly atmosphere and welcomes all visitors. Tullamore Auto Centre not only offers petrol and diesel, batteries, repairs, tyres and NRMA services, but it is also a place you can stop for hot fresh food.

RUNNING IN THE FAMILY… Music teacher Melinda Richter is very happy her son Gordon has found what he loves doing.
Gordon In Tune With His Passion
A talented musician from Parkes High School scored a rare opportunity to work under an internationally renowned composer to reimagine the great love story of Romeo and Juliet. Gordon Richter’s love of music takes him to Sydney two to three times per month as a member of the Sydney Youth Orchestra, but his most recent trip, lasting for five days, was a completely new experience working under Paul Rissmann to help reinvent the great orchestral work of Sergei Prokofiev. “It was really, really good and a different challenge,” said Gordon. “Paul Rissmann worked really well with us kids to get 22 minutes’ worth of music.” Paul has worked with the London Symphony Orchestra, New York Philharmonic and many of the world’s great orchestras. The Central West’s representation was complemented by three dancers from Cowra. “That was our biggest challenge in composing the music – we had to think if it could be danced to.” The dance students choreographed a routine to the new score, and the combined work was performed at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. The conservatorium is where the Year 12 student hopes to return to next year to do a performance degree on the clarinet, his main instrument. While his second instrument the uncommon bassoon, which kids often mistake for a didgeridoo, has provided him with plenty of opportunities and experiences, like being offered a position in the Sydney Youth Orchestra, his love of the clarinet started very young. “I went to a concert when I was small and heard the clarinet for the first time and
really liked it.” As his mum Melinda is a piano teacher it was decided he would do a different instrument and he started lessons in Year 2. It was his teacher Justin Screen of the Mitchell Conservatorium who asked him to take up the bassoon. While there are hardly any other clarinet players in Parkes, there are loads of them elsewhere which makes it harder to get positions in orchestras. Playing the bassoon has provided Gordon with lots of opportunities to grow his ensemble playing experience and exposure. He feels confident about getting into the Sydney Conservatorium, and ultimately the Paris Conservatorium - one of the best for clarinet in the world – as a post-graduation option. Gordon has his future plans mapped out and would love to play in orchestras once he has completed his studies. “Getting a position in the New York Philharmonic would be amazing.” Bringing him back to earth is Mum who reminds him that for now he has to focus on his HSE, as his points would be taken into consideration on top of an audition for acceptance at the Sydney Conservatorium. “The Romeo and Juliet experience in Sydney opened up a whole new experience for Gordon in terms of composing,” said Melinda. This was very valuable as he has to compose a two-minute piece in contemporary classical music for his HSE Music Extension syllabus. “It is fantastic to see your child discover what makes them excited about the world. Gordon loves what he is doing,” said Melinda. By Maggi Barnard
The kindness and goodwill of our community was once again on display this week when the Parkes Antique Motor Club handed over a donation to Currajong Disability Services (CDS). CDS CEO Jeff Evans received a cheque of $675 from President Tony Horsington following the club’s extremely successful Autumn Run earlier this month. “We had 135 pre-1931 vehicles all the way from Melbourne and up to Brisbane, which has been described as the biggest collection of this age car in the memory of participants,” said Tony. At the event’s dinner, attended by 260 people at the Parkes Services Club, patrons were very generous in buying raffle tickets with all proceeds going to the Club’s chosen charity, CDS. Tony said the successful event received many positive reviews and participants said it was excellent. For CDS the support from the motor club is also very valuable. “It is amazing how local community clubs support each other in Parkes,” said Jeff Evans on accepting the cheque. CDS is a leading provider of NDIS services in the Parkes Shire and surrounding areas, and provides a diverse range of disability services including, centre-based and in-home support services.

Less Is Always More In decorating I follow the same approach as I do dressing myself. A common mistake is the need to add extra bits or pieces before walking out the door. I think Coco Chanel said: “Take one piece of jewellery off before you walk out the door rather than putting one more piece on.” In design this is a common phenomenon when I visit people’s homes. The initial consultation is always about streamlining the home. It is essential to do this before we can add the right extra pieces to the mix. These are my favourite ways to practise the “less is more” principle: • Remember the more surface areas you can see clear from clutter, the larger and more impressive your home will appear. • Less objects equals less housework. A home free from clutter always appears neat and makes dusting and cleaning a breeze. • One large, even oversized statement piece looks more amazing than a collection of smaller objects. • Group uneven numbers of different objects together to create a vignette rather than lining your possessions up in soldier formation. • Remove the plethora of photo frames and treasured family snaps from surfaces around your home and create photo galleries in key focal locations. • Do an evaluation of the objects you really love and want to display rather than trying to keep everyone happy. • China display cabinets are a main focus in my plans for decluttering a client’s
RANGE OF FIRE GUARDS IN STOCK NOW!
home. You might just uncover an amazing treasure. • Remember each room or space should only need one or two key focal points. A great artwork, a rug and some cushions with one statement pot or sculptural element will give you the WOW factor. • Let your home speak for itself if it is crafted from beautiful materials. Highlight features with natural or artificial lighting. Once you start showcasing your possessions in this new way you will be so impressed with the results it will totally amaze you. By Karen Creith

New Organisation For Central NSW The Central NSW Joint Organisation was recently established to strengthen collaboration between local councils and the NSW Government on regional initiatives. It was formally proclaimed with 10 member councils – Bathurst, Blayney, Cabonne, Cowra, Forbes, Lachlan, Oberon, Orange, Parkes, and Weddin. The NSW Government provided $300,000 in seed funding to help establish the new regional body. The NSW Government introduced an Australian first for regional communities when Parliament passed legislation late last year to establish a network of Joint Organisations across regional NSW. The new regional body will look at the issues that matter most to local communities such as building strong economies, creating jobs, and improving regional infrastructure, services and facilities. The next step is to undertake a number of tasks to prepare to become operational by 1st July including electing a chairperson, employing an executive officer, adopting a code of conduct, and developing a charter. Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW John Barilaro said Central NSW Joint Organisation was one of 11 joint organisations comprising more than 70 councils in regional NSW.

OUR Gal Norma Garment How long have you lived in Parkes? Barry, Heather, Derek and I moved here in November 1979. I love the smaller town community environment. Easy to shop, easy to park and easy to make friends. What do you do currently and do you enjoy about it? I teach scripture at three primary schools. I love the preparation, the feedback from the kids and to see them enjoy the lesson and get something from it. We all enjoy singing together. What do you do in your spare time? We are now retired and enjoy going to church to worship, family, gardening, car club activities, craft groups and friends. What are you really good at? I might be a bit of an organiser. I enjoy seeing everyone getting together to make something good happen. What is your pet hate? Swearing - I hate it when I do it and hearing it come out of childrens’ mouths, especially when God or Jesus’ name is used as a swear word. If you could have a superpower what would it be? To make the love that Bishop Michael Curry (Royal Wedding) spoke about, become a reality all over the world. Tell us about your best holiday. When Barry and I take short trips around Australia in the caravan. Every trip has been the best one. I also enjoy short trips with the Parkes Antique Car Club to see things we have driven past for years and enjoy the fellowship of other collectors of fine old cars.

Is Knee Cracking OK? Many people experience a painless cracking, grating or popping sensation when bending the knee. The medical term for this is crepitus. A study by McCoy et al looked at 250 normal knees and found that 99% had patellofemoral crepitus. One must then ask: “What causes joint crepitus and does it really matter?” Whilst knee crepitus is often a symptom of patellofemoral pain syndrome and osteoarthritis, no research to date has shown a causal link between the crepitation noise and actual joint pathology. Most people experience one of four types of crepitus. The first occurs when a tendon snaps over a bone. It can be palpated and is often described as a hollow clunk. The second occurs inside the joint when the two joint surfaces separate. A vacuum is created forming gas bubbles in the joint fluid. When these pop a loud “crack” is often heard. One study showed no signs of joint arthritis after years of habitual knuckle cracking. The third cause is when patellofemoral movement is not smooth. This can cause a fine crunching noise and can be measured with vibration arthrography. Vibrations are decreased or lost in joints with osteoarthritis probably due to decreased joint lubrication. The fourth occurs when joint fluid is pushed behind a slightly rough patella surface as the knee bends. It is good to distinguish what type of cracking your knee makes. If it is not painful and falls into one of the above categories we should see crepitus not as a sign of joint pathology, but as a sign that our joints are mobile and well lubricated.

Hood’s Masterclass Not Enough To Stop Rhinos The Boars played away from home for the third week in a row taking on the Dubbo Rhinos. The 2nd grade side was first out with Timmy Lawler and Ben Rathbone adding much needed experience to the youthful side, but the Rhinos managed to win the match 29-5. In the 1st grade game the Rhinos were first to score, while the Boars lost their no. 8 Jarrod Westcott after tripping over his shoe-

laces and dislocating his knee. The pace and flare of the Rhinos backline was on show and they went over the line again to make it 14 - 0. In one of the most majestic pieces of play on a rugby field Dylan Hood found himself in a position of isolation on the right hand flank. His feet went in, then away, then in, then away again. This wrong footed the three Rhino defenders and gave him room to race around the defenders and glide over the line. The Rhinos hit back immediately before the break to make it 19 – 5. James Sellings kicked to his brother, Jonah Ruzgas produced the tackle of the season and jolt the ball free. It rolled over the try line and Dylan Hood dived on the ball for the fastest try. Dyllan Phillips was next to a much needed try for the Boars to take it to 19-15. With only minutes on the clock Rhinos got a turnover and snuck down the far touch line to score in the corner and signal an end to the game: 24-15. By Rory Nock
