TRAIN STATION ROCK… The Elvis Express rolls into Parkes every January loaded with Elvis fans for a five-day extravaganza. The legendary trip was named the top one-of-a-kind rail journey world-wide.

The Wonder Of The Elvis Express

It might be a ‘mystery train’ for the uninitiated, but thousands of fans would happily attest to why the Elvis Express has been awarded the top spot globally. The extremely popular train journey from Sydney to the Parkes Elvis Festival has been named the top one-of-a-kind rail journey across the globe. Escape.com.au has revealed the nine top train trips that offer travellers a unique experience with the Elvis Express journey listed as number one. “Though departing only once annually, the Elvis Express is undoubtedly among the most unique train rides in Australia,” according to the Escape.com.au website. “Transporting hundreds of Elvis fans each January to the Southern hemisphere’s biggest Elvis Presley festival, the train is a moving celebration of the life and career of rock ’n’ roll’s beloved King. “Once the doors close on the legendary

TrainLink service passengers can expect non-stop performances, games and dressups over the seven hour, 365km ride. With a raft of hip-thrusting Elvis impersonators and bee-hived ‘Priscillas’ singing and shimmying their way to Parkes.” Parkes Elvis Festival Director Cathy Treasure said: “It’s wonderful to have the Elvis Express experience recognised as the most unique train ride. We work yearround with NSW TrainLink to ensure the service offers festival visitors a one-of-akind journey.” NSW TrainLink Acting Chief Operating Officer Candice Heine said: “We’re very proud to be able to support the Parkes Elvis Festival by offering a unique way to travel to the five-day extravaganza.” The Elvis Express will once again form part of the 2019 Parkes Elvis Festival with tickets going on sale on the day of the festival program launch on 10th September.

MAYORAL NOTES I was pleased to see a number of local artists receiving accolades at the Regional SIMS Metal Waste to Art & Design Competition currently on exhibit in Narromine. Congratulations to winners Middleton Public School who took out the award for Building/Sculpture 2D, Anette Peterson for the Curators Award and John Grady for the Sims Scrap Metal Award. Council welcomed the re-instatement of the Access Committee this week, with a kick off meeting held on Tuesday. The Access Committee has representation from across the community including agencies such as Neighbourhood Central, Currajong Disabilities and Lachlan Area Health. They come together in the aim to build awareness and understanding of access issues across the shire and to advise Council and make recommendations on addressing these matters. Council has completed road surface upgrades in the Parkes CBD including asphalt works in Court Street, Church Street and the northern end of Clarinda Street. Thank you to the businesses and community members for your patience while these important works took place. Crews are also continuing work to upgrade the Kelly Reserve carpark to improve safety, access and movement within the precinct. Works are expected to be completed by early next week. The Recycled Water Scheme is moving into Phase 2, which will entail the construction of a Recycled Water Rising Main (RWRM) to deliver clean and ‘green’ recycled water for irrigation. The scheme will essentially drought-proof selected sporting fields and green-spaces, ensuring our parks and public gardens can be maintained yearround. While the scheme is not available for household use it will offset demand for potable water, reducing the need for bore water top-ups during peak use. Construction of the new RWRM pipeline is expected to commence in November this year. Returned local artist, Alice Stokes will be sharing some of her work with Parkes Library for an exhibition during July. Alice’s “Australian Gothic Local” art works will be on exhibit at Parkes Library from 3rd to 28th July. We wish everyone a safe and enjoyable weekend in the Parkes Shire. Parkes Welcomes Three New Citizens

Each morning my husband and I take our little white dogs, Buddy and Holly for their walk. As I lost a beautiful little dog a few years ago to two stray Staffies, we pick our dogs up and carry them until all is clear when we see dogs loose in the street. I am appealing to all dog owners to keep their dogs securely locked in their yards. Last Wednesday we were walking along Russell Street when one large white dog and one large tan dog suddenly bounded through the trees and attacked our little dogs. My husband managed to pick up Holly, but I could not catch Buddy before the tan one had a secure hold on his rear and started dragging him away. John, with Holly in his arms, got the tan dog to let go of Buddy. Poor Buddy was yelping in pain and shaking like a leaf. We left the vet armed with antibiotics for the puncture wound in one hip and a very sore second hip which became quite swollen. Please people choose dogs suitable to your conditions and exercise them adequately on a lead. We will continue to walk our dogs, but will always be anxious for them. Pamela Ward

The Galari Mawam-Bul (coming together) art exhibition is at the Coventry Room from 9th to 12th July from 11am to 4pm daily. Long Road From a Broken Heart: Join inspirational speaker and author Jeremy Scott at Parkes Shire Library as he shares the incredible story of his 51,916 kilometre solo bicycle ride from London to New Zealand. Jeremy wasn’t only born with a huge hole in his heart, but with an insatiable craving for adventure. He set off on 5th October 2011 for what turned out to be a 2 1/2 year solo bike ride around the globe. He will be at Parkes Library on Friday, 6th July at 6pm. Please RSVP 6861 2309 or parkes.library@parkes.nsw.gov.au. Successful Heavy Vehicle Breakfast: A record-breaking 100 delegates attended the sixth annual Central West NSW Heavy

QUESTION of the week Vehicle Breakfast Forum in Forbes recently. Topics included Councils’ achievements in the heavy vehicle space over the past 12 months, the Chain of Responsibility Master Code, Performance Based Standard Vehicles, Safety Management Systems, engagement with NSW Police, the Farm Gate Access Project, the NSW Road Safety Plan 2021, Safety Communications and updates from Roads and Maritime Services Freight Branch and the Livestock Bulk and Rural Carriers Association. Local Artist Exhibits: Alice Stokes returned to Parkes in late 2017 after a number of years honing her creative skills in Berlin, and she is sharing some of her work with Parkes Library for an exhibition during July. Due to Alice’s love of film noir and the colour black she primarily draws with graphite on black paper or charcoal, creating stark, evocative images that are only revealed as the light catches the graphite. Australian Gothic Local will be on exhibit at Parkes Library from 3rd to 28th July.

If you could only listen to one composer or type of music for the rest of your life, who or what would it be?

Pam Parkin: I would choose Bach. His music is simple and complex at the same time so you can listen to it at a superficial level and study it at a deeper level.

Neil Westcott: I love Broadway musicals as they normally have a good story that can touch your soul. The greatest instrument is the voice, which is the main focus of musicals. One of my all-time favourites is Les Miserables, and The Sound of Music has a great story.

Anette Peterson was one of three Parkes winners at the Regional SIMS Metal Waste to Art & Design Competition. She won the Curators Award with her entry titled Clip Art. The other winners were Middleton Public School Building/Sculpture 2D and John Grady for the Sims Scrap Metal Award.

Gillian Hunt: I would choose Beethoven as he has such a wide variety of music and I would not get bored listening to it all the time. The Pastoral Symphony (Symphony no 6) is really good. I also love the Emperor Concerto (Piano Concerto no 5).

Taking The Music Everywhere The Parkes Library was turned into a theatre last Thursday when more than 50 people arrived all dressed up for the first ever live stream event from the Sydney Opera House. In an unprecedented event for international Make Music Day, the Sydney Symphony Orchestra shared a global performance of Verdi’s Requiem live from the opera house. Parkes was one of several public libraries in NSW joining the livestream to audiences all around the world. Australia joined the Make Music Day ‘party’ for the first time this year.

HASSLE FREE FRIDAYS LUNCH DELIVERY TO YOUR WORKPLACE Minimum order applies Available from Friday July 6th Contact IKON for more details Ikonatgracelands@gmail.com The Lachlan Community Orchestra performed before the live stream event. Sarah Discovers Hidden Art Talent It was not so long ago that Sarah Bowkett would never have thought about doing art, let alone art therapy and starting to create Van Gogh-esque style paintings. Yet just over a year since her first class with art teacher Marilyn Nash, Sarah continues to go from strength to strength and people are starting to take notice of her undeniable talent.

Sarah Bowkett with her Mona Lisa inspired artwork.

When Marilyn asked Sarah in one of their sessions what was it about art, drawing and painting that she enjoyed the most, her reply was immediate. She said: “When I draw and paint I feel free to express and be myself without anyone telling me what to do.” “Our art therapy sessions throughout the first and second quarter of 2018 have continued to develop Sarah’s technical and expressive art making abilities as well as deepening her trust and rapport with myself,” said Marilyn. “It is always a delight to continue inspiring Sarah with new artistic ideas and stimulation to also help increase her sense of selfesteem and self-worth.” “It is extremely positive,” said Marilyn. “Sarah is now keen for us to do regular updates of her artistic progress on social media, which we will shortly start posting on the CDS Facebook page. I am also in discussions with Program Co-ordinator Jodie Turner to organise an art exhibition of Sarah’s works.” Wassily Kandinsky said: ‘There is no must in art because art is free.” Never has there been a truer word spoken. Well done Sarah from everyone at Currajong Disability Service! By Dane Millerd

Prepare For Tax Time Lodging your tax return is easier when you have everything ready that you will need. Here are some tips from the Australian Taxation Office (ATO): NEW THIS YEAR This year there is a new way to lodge your tax return online. MyTax is the fastest and most convenient way. Use myTax if you have straightforward tax affairs. MyTax is available from 1 July 2018. You can lodge on your smart phone, your tablet or any computer. If your tax affairs are a bit more complex, e-tax is available and has built in checks and calculators to help you get it right. To lodge your tax return, using myTax or e-tax, you will need to get a myGov account and link to the ATO. If you have private health insurance you will need your statement. There have been changes this year and your statement may contain more rows of information that you will need to enter into the private health insurance policy section. CHECKLIST For the basics you will need your: tax file number; bank details (BSB and account number) to receive any refund owed and for e-tax, you will need your Medicare card or number, if you wish to pre-fill your medical expenses. 1. Details of your income and expenses: These could include: details from payment summaries from employers, super funds, Centrelink or Department

of Veterans’ Affairs; statements from banks and financial institutions showing interest received; details of foreign pensions or other foreign income received; employment termination payment summaries; receipts for gifts, donations and work-related expenses; and details of any child support payments made. If you have a spouse, you will need details of their income and expenses – complete the income test questions to ensure your entitlements are correct. 2. Investments: If you have shares, units, managed funds or other investments you will need details of dividend payments and distributions from managed funds, and any investment gains or losses from the disposal of shares, units and rental properties. 3. Rental properties: If you own a rental property you will need details of: rental income earned; interest charged on money you borrowed for the rental property; and other expenses relating to the property, including any expenditure on capital works. 4. Prepare to lodge: This year to lodge online you will need to get a myGov account and link it to the ATO. If you already have a myGov account, simply link the ATO as one of your member services. Once linked, you can use your myGov account to manage your tax and super affairs. You can update your personal details, keep track of your super, arrange to pay a debt and check the progress of previously lodged tax returns.

How long have you lived in Parkes and what do you like most about living here? I met a Parkes gal in Darwin, we married, had twins and moved here almost six years ago. I like that even the heat waves here are still cooler than tropical summers. Where do you work or what do you do currently and what do you enjoy about it? I run a ‘flourishing’ garden /lawn mowing business. I like the reward of money for my labour (obviously), but I love the connection with local folks. “Always time for a cuppa” is my motto – which lets me taste scones, great scones... and hear wonderful stories and get to share my own. What do you do in your spare time and on weekends? I meet the arvo school bus every day, so have plenty of time for growing veggies and breeding budgies and chooks. Kev’s Pasture Range Eggs has become a passion, family time at the Pink Orchid, catching up with mates for a beer, attending the girls’ soccer games and meeting at church on Sundays. Life is full. What are you really good at? Telling stories. Hearing God’s voice, doing what He says makes the GREATEST stories, so I’ve found out. If you could have a superpower what would it be? Zip the lip. It sometimes requires a super power to stop foolish talk. I know too well. What is your pet hate? A pet dislike (hate is a powerful word) is littering - “out of site out of mind” littering. Tell us about your best holiday. Getting paid to travel Australia for two years in 1993/94. What a top country!

Top Five Tips To Get You In The Mood… Sometimes the thought of starting a project can literally stop people in their tracks. Here are my five top tips to get you inspired. 1. Never be afraid to ask for help! Asking a professional will give you confidence to achieve the result you want. 2. Always have an idea before you start shopping or making decisions. Create a style file from magazine or internet pictures. 3. An inspiration piece can be the perfect starting point. There is usually one key element that stands out and this can be used to select all the other pieces to keep cohesion to the final look. 4. Know your budget to avoid the end result getting blown out of control. You can achieve a great look at any price. 5. Have a clear idea of what you want to do in the completed room. Function must meet form to give you a sense of accomplishment at the end. Decorating and making our dreams reality in our homes should be a fun experience. I hope with these ideas you will feel more empowered to take that initial step and confident that you are not alone. By Karen Creith

Parkes Boys Are State Champions!

Parkes not only hosted the NSW State Hockey Championships last weekend, but the U15 Boys team of Parkes Hockey Incorporated won the Division 2 state title! Parkes 1 defeated Bathurst 2-0 in the final and will move into Division 1 next year. Parkes 2 made it to the semi-final. Parkes 1 coach Glen Johnston said it was an ecstatic feeling to be state champions. “It was a really good result after ten weeks of hard work. The boys deserve this reward as they are eager to listen and learn.” The team scored 22 goals in six games and only had two goals scored against them – “another incredible achievement,” said Glen. To top off a very successful weekend four players have been named in the 2019 NSW U15 Boys squad. They are Jack Westcott, Jacob Chambers, Hugh Daley and Austin MacGregor. Parkes Hockey has received very positive feedback on the first hosting of a state championship with Hockey NSW thanking them and all the volunteers for the hard work and putting on a “stunner for everyone”.
