With the focus on women, the 2018 NAIDOC Week celebrations in Parkes proved to be very popular with good attendance at the daily workshops and demonstrations held at Council’s Coventry Room. This year’s theme ‘Because of her, we can’, celebrates the invaluable contributions that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women have made – and continue to make – to our communities, our families, our rich history and to our nation. In celebration the Galari ‘Mawam-Bul’ Art Exhibition brought together 11 talented and inspiring artists from Parkes, Forbes, Peak Hill and surrounding areas, which attracted a lot of interest. The diverse series of events showcasing local artists and talent including an Aboriginal Astronomy workshop, basket weaving demonstration, art class, Aboriginal storytelling and screening of ‘Servant or
Slave’ saw more than 30 adults and children attend each session. “We’ve had a great reception so far,” said local artist and curator of the exhibition, Irene Ridgeway. Amanda Corcoran from Neighborhood Central agrees saying they were very happy with the support from the community. At the basket weaving demonstration on Tuesday, presenter Alicia Lonsdale of Arts Out West taught the adults to make baskets and the children made bush toys. “I learned to do this craft as a child, and in keeping with this year’s theme, we are focusing on women’s craft. This is what they predominantly do.” A visitor from Melbourne Allison Besselaar really enjoyed learning the craft. “This is such a great service to the community.” By Maggi Barnard

MAYORAL NOTES Parkes will welcome over 350 delegates for the Inland Rail Joint Industry Conference on 18th and 19th July. Presented by the Australasian Railway Association and the Australian Logistics Council, the conference will commence with a welcome reception on Tuesday at Ikon followed by two days of sessions at the Parkes Leagues Club. Parkes will be in the spotlight with a huge range of industry representatives, government agencies and officials in attendance. A timely new marketing initiative to promote the Parkes National Logistics Hub was launched this week with 12 travelling billboards installed on SCT Logistics’ trailers. The artwork will be in market for six months with the trucks travelling between Parkes and Western Sydney daily, creating awareness and attracting enquiries from potential investors and businesses. Council hosted a business briefing workshop on Wednesday about the Recycled Water Rising Main construction project. Over 50 potential contractors and interested local businesses attended. Congratulations to Parkes Shire Aboriginal Project Officer Amanda Corcoran and local Wiradjuri artist Irene Ridgeway on the fantastic art exhibition and program of events held to celebrate NAIDOC Week 2018 in the Parkes Shire. Finally, this weekend will see the 2018 Central West Astronomical Society’s (CWAS) AstroFest with a conference on Saturday (tomorrow) in the Coventry Room featuring a stellar all-female line up of guest speakers. The second day is held at the CSIRO Parkes Radio Telescope, with the official opening of the David Malin Astrophotography Awards Exhibition at the Visitor Centre. If the stars align, and the sun is shining, you can gaze through a telescope and view bright stars, planets, the sun and the moon during the daytime. Josie Gains Knowledge On The Job Last week I was part of the Parkes Phoenix while I carried out my work experience. During my time I gained a lot of knowledge, had fun and experienced lots of new things. I got to know what the Phoenix is all about as well as learning the processes in and behind it. I met lots of new people and clients through selling advertisements. It was fun spending time with the clients and getting to know them and their business. I really enjoyed the photography work I did taking photos for the Parkes Phoenix Instagram page. I also really loved being a part of the Be Seen column and the Question of the Week. While I was at the Phoenix, I saw the processes of printing, interviewing, creating feature ideas and selling advertisements, which I enjoyed the most. I would like to thank Sylvie and all the other
girls within the Phoenix group for giving me the opportunity to spend my work experience with them and for all the knowledge I gained in many different ways. By Josie Thomson

With the AstroFest happening this weekend, Council installed new astro public art in Church street in support of the annual event. The works of finalists from the David Malin Astrophotography Awards throughout the history of Astrofest are featured.
Funding For Wartime History: The Parkes Cenotaph and Vietnam War Memorial will be upgraded thanks to four grants. The total of $10,111 was approved under the Federal Government’s Saluting Their Service commemorations program and will go towards updating honour roll plaques on the Cenotaph and the Vietnam War Memorial, erect a chain fence at the Cenotaph and install a flag pole and security lighting at the memorial. Council’s Heritage Fund: Parkes Shire Council is inviting owners and lessees of significant land and buildings to apply for dollar for dollar matched funding under their Local Heritage Fund Program. More than $54,655 worth of heritage projects were completed in the last financial year with more than $33,655 contributed by applicants and $21,000 provided through local heritage funding. Work included

Country Music News: The next muster is this Sunday at 1pm in the Starlight lounge at the Parkes Services Club. Cheryl Simpson, vocalist from Dubbo accompanied by Tony Dess on keyboard, is the featured performer. Walk-ups are welcome. The June Muster was a great success with Barry Green. He was joined by visiting artists from Dubbo - Gary Hollier, Barry Josephs, Craig Manderson and Mick Bruce; from Cowra - Ken Chalker, Bill Murray and Stephen Cheney; Dawn Brydon from Narromine and Ann Penman from Lyndhurst. The muster at Peak Hill on 1st July combined with Dubbo Orana CMA at the Services Club. The entertainment was excellent with artists Craig Manderson, Mick Bruce, Gary Hollier, Barry Dickenson, Greg Jankowski and birthday boy Barry Joseph from Dubbo; Jock and Lindy Charlton, Dale Cowell, Joy Rice and Stephen Cheney and new comer Annabelle van Wyk (10 years) who delighted with her performance as she sang and played guitar and saxophone. NAIDOC Week Grants: Peak Hill Pre School Kindergarten Inc received a Federal Government grant of $900 for NAIDOC Week. They plan to invite Wiradjuri man Larry Brandy to present interactive traditional stories to the children, who will participate in the story telling. Local primary schools, their families and the wider communities are also invited.

Nell Smith (10): I would buy all the cute puppies I can find and make a nice home for them. I would plan a party and see if it’s really fun drinking.
Three local music groups combined their musical talents last Wednesday for an unusual performance of Waltzing Matilda. Members of the Lachlan Regional Orchestra, Parkes Shire Concert Band and Forbes Town and District Band met at the AOG hall to put together a recording of the legendary song which will contribute towards a final video performance on the big screen at Federation Square in Melbourne on 12th September. This final performance will be a compilation of recordings from individuals, schools and community groups from around Australia, all playing Waltzing Matilda. The idea is a new online initiative of the Australian Music Examination Board to create the AMEB Online Orchestra. The recording process was a lot of fun, and a rare chance to put together a really diverse range of instruments (and musicians) for a common cause. Sincere thanks to Darren Mann for doing a superb job of sound recording, to James Whalan for conducting the orchestra, Jen Kelly for the video recording, and Robbie McFadyen and Jen Kelly for organising tea and vegemite sandwiches. Members of the three groups are all keen to find other opportunities to combine together again soon. By Pam Parkin

Access Committee Relaunched The Parkes Shire Access Committee was re-established by Council and had its first meeting at the end of last month. It is an advisory committee to Council regarding access issues for people with disabilities. The committee has wide representation including councillors, Neighbourhood Central, Currajong Disabilities, Ability Links, Lachlan Area Health and a number of individual community members. Committee Chair Cr Ken McGrath says access issues can relate to a wide range of lifestyle aspects, not just physical movement. “The Parkes Shire Access Committee will address many issues including access to services, employment, events, communication, transport and building access.”

The committee’s core functions are to provide a forum for the discussion of matters pertaining to disability access; to assist in the implementation of Council’s Disability Inclusion Action Plan; and to promote greater awareness, understanding, support and positive attitudes on disability issues. The committee will act as a conduit for consultation on Council’s major infrastructure developments and events to highlight potential issues and better plan for access, develop awareness campaigns, lobby government and agencies for better services and create conversations around access issues in the shire. Council has committed $10,000 to an Access Incentive Scheme to be administered by the committee every year.

Winter Warmers It’s Time To Love Winter With the temperature dropping well below zero this week and frost covering the ground, keeping warm has been a top priority for many of us. We all know some tips to stay on top of the cold. How long have you lived in Parkes and what do you like most about living here? All my life - 42 years (lol). My friends and family, and the community spirit that Parkes radiates! Where do you work or what do you do currently and what do you enjoy about it? I have just started a new business called Johno’s Hockey Academy coaching hockey athletes of all ages and abilities. I love seeing athletes develop, gain confidence, and achieve their goals. I also operate the Just Hockey Pro Shop. In between, I do contract lawn mowing with Jim Daley of Cutting Edge Lawns. What do you do in your spare time and on weekends? I don’t get a lot of spare time, as my wife Cherie and three sons Koby (15), Zanda (11) and Jett (9) all play hockey too. Doing it together is great. I do sneak in a fitness session in my home gym or a quiet beer with mates every now and then. What are you really good at? Getting the best out of athletes, assisting them to realise their full potential. I also cook great poached eggs! If you could have a superpower what would it be? Teleport, so I can send myself to places without the travel or waiting. What is your pet hate? My boys leave the doors open all the time, it drives me crazy. Tell us about your best holiday. In 2014 my mum and dad shouted my family and my sister’s family flights to America. We were 11 and we first arrived in Los Angeles for Disneyland, Universal Studios, an ice hockey game, a baseball game, Santa Monica Pier and Venice Beach. We drove to Las Vegas - an eye opener – and loved Fremont St (old Vegas) and a helicopter tour to the Grand Canyon. In San Francisco we saw Alcatraz, Lombard St, Pier 39 and crossed the Golden Gate Bridge in an open-top bus. The best part was doing it as a family, so many great memories.

Cold And Flu Season Is Here
Winter has arrived and so has the cold and flu season. Winter illness affects all ages, however newborns, young children, the elderly and individuals with health conditions are at a greater risk. Viruses causing colds spread from infected people through the air and through close personal contact like shaking hands, or touching an infected surface and then touching your eyes, mouth, or nose. How to protect yourself: Wash your hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds. Viruses can live on your hands, and regular handwashing can help protect you from getting sick. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands as viruses can enter your body this way and make you sick. Staying away from sick people as much as possible. How to protect others: If you have a cold stay at home, avoid close contact with others like hugging and shaking hands. Move away from people when you cough or sneeze, and do it into a tissue (then discard it) or into your elbow or upper sleeve completely covering your mouth and nose. Wash your hands afterwards. Finnley’s Holiday Of Dreams While most students are enjoying the winter holiday, a 15-year-old Parkes boy has taken a big step in realising his dream of playing professional rugby league one day. Red Bend Catholic College student Finnley Neilsen was selected in the NSW CCC Country Rugby League U/15 side in May at the State Championships in St Marys. at Mulgoa in Penrith from Monday for intensive training and playing. On Tuesday they travelled to play Canterbury Bankstown at Peter Moore Oval in Belmore, and on Thursday they played Illawarra at Wollongong. Today, Friday the 13th, the highlight of the week takes place when the team plays Penrith in the curtain raiser for the Penrith vs Cronulla game at Penrith Park. “Finnley was very excited to be selected in the team,” said his grandfather and big supporter, Ray Neilsen. He said friends and relatives from Parkes would be in the stands at Penrith Park to cheer him on today. “We are all very proud of him,” said Ray. While the week’s camp concludes tomorrow, Finnley will still not be taking a break during the second week of the holiday. He was invited by the Penrith Panthers to spend a week of training at their academy to further enhance his league career. The Academy is a $22 million state-of-the-art facility located behind Panthers Leagues Club in Penrith, and is a fulltime training and development facility for the Panthers’ senior and junior squads.
Parkes residents Bill and Beth Thomas recently received the NSW Government State Representative Award from Member for Orange Philip Donato MP. They represented the Western Region in the Australian National Dragon Boat Championship earlier this year. “We are honoured to be recognised for doing what we love doing,” said Bill and Beth. “It just shows – if we can represent our State at our ages – anyone can be an athlete. One of the best things about this sport is that we can do it together.” Bill and Beth were also instrumental in the formation of the recently launched Parkes Dragon Boat Club at Lake Endeavour. The club is functioning with paddling sessions taking place on Sunday mornings. “We are confident that Parkes will have a great dragon boating team, because it’s already shaping up that way.”
