Museum Takes Historical Aircraft Under Its Wing
The history of the latest addition to the HARS Parkes Aviation Museum collection is a story filled with adventure doing maritime search and rescue missions and playing a vital role in many other areas. Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack and Parkes Mayor Ken Keith were present at the official handover of the recently retired AP3-C Orion in Parkes last week. This aircraft served in a multitude of roles since joining the RAAF in 1978 that include a tour of duty in Afghanistan, tracking Russian subs in the South East Asian and Pacific regions, border protection and fishery patrols. It also participated in the search for Malaysian airliner MH370 and the lone French female sailor in the Southern Ocean some years ago.
The Orion type first entered service with the RAAF in 1968 and has been steadily upgraded over the years with more powerful engines and advanced avionics and intelligence gathering capability. The AP3-C Orion is the pinnacle of that development. The aircraft flew into Parkes Airport some months ago and has been moved to the museum area and is being prepared so the public can visit on board. The Museum works with students from Parkes High School and member volunteers to restore and prepare the exhibits for display. There is always a need for more volunteers to help out with hands on restoration or being a tour guide. The Museum is open 9:30am to 3:30pm on Sundays and Thursdays. By Mike De La Hunty

MAYORAL NOTES Residents are invited to join Council staff and Central West Lachlan Landcare to take part in Australia’s largest community treeplanting and nature care event this Sunday, 29th July. National Tree Day is a chance for locals to give back to the environment. Tree planting will commence at 10am at Akuna Road, off Eugowra Road and will conclude with a free barbeque for all participants to enjoy. Council staff will soon install new Take The Lead signage throughout town as part of the Responsible Dog Ownership campaign launched last week. The signage will serve as a prompt for dog owners about the roles and responsibilities of pet ownership, with the aim of reducing the number of roaming dogs and dog attacks. Residents can pick up a Take The Lead pocket guide from Council’s Administration Centre or Parkes Veterinary Clinic or it can be downloaded from Council’s website. This weekend Council’s tourism team will travel to Orange to attend the Regional Tourism Awards. Council, Parkes Elvis Festival and Parkes Visitor Information Centre are among 78 leading tourism businesses, events and visitor experiences across Country and Outback NSW nominated as finalists. Residents and motorists are advised that Council crews will be installing new stormwater pipes and constructing new kerb and guttering along Station Street next week. The work is expected to take approximately six weeks but will not involve road closures. Instead, traffic control in the form of stop/go signs will be used. A reminder that applications for Council’s Local Heritage Fund close next Tuesday, 31st July at 5pm. The Fund aims to assists owners and/or lessees of significant land or heritage buildings with funding for projects on a matched dollar for dollar basis. Application forms can be downloaded from Council’s website, and hard copies are available at Council’s Administration Building. Have a safe and enjoyable weekend Cr Ken Keith OAM Mayor of Parkes Shire

National Tree Day: Parkes Shire Council and Central West Lachlan Landcare invite Parkes Shire residents to plant trees and shrubs for Planet Ark’s National Tree Day this Sunday. This year’s event takes place from 10am at Akuna Road, off Eugowra Road adjacent to the new Advanced Water Recycling facility, and will conclude around midday with a barbeque lunch. This year’s planting will connect remnant patches of vegetation in the area and provide a habitat link to the 2015 National Tree Day site located nearby. For more details and to register go to www.parkes.nsw.gov.au Please wear sturdy shoes, sunscreen, gloves and a hat. Child Safety: The recent child restraint checking day discovered that 70% of the restraints checked were incorrectly fitted. A total of 22 child restraints were brought in for checking and two were installed. “The most common mistakes were that the seatbelt needed tightening, the seatbelt wasn’t used correctly with the child restraint, the vehicle’s headrest had to be moved up as it was resting on the child’s shoulders and there wasn’t a large enough gap between the back of the front seat and the child restraint,” said Parkes Shire Council’s Road Safety and Injury Prevention Officer,

Drought Care Packages Well Received By Farmers
The fully loaded vehicle with drought care packages donated by Parkes and Forbes residents for farmers.
More than 40 care packages were distributed to drought affected farmers following the initiative of a Parkes woman asking for donations. “It has been pretty amazing,” said Karen White who created a Facebook page last month to ask people to donate items to make up care packages. She said many people made up smoko packages, one woman donated $100 worth of dog biscuits and the Rural Fire Service
at Forbes arrived with a vehicle loaded with everyday items, such as rice, pasta and sugar. “We did not have enough room to fit everything in for the first drop off.” Karen teamed up with the NSW Farmers Association’s representative in Parkes and she took all the packages to the central distribution point in Cobar. They have already received very good feedback from farmers. A couple who had received a package with home made fruit cakes sent a message saying, “It gave us a lift when we thought the world was against us.” According to Karen the greatest need is drinking water as many farmers’ household tanks are running low. She said large water jugs or slabs of water bottles would be most welcome to farmers at this stage. “I am happy to keep going as long as there are donations,” Karen said. Go to the Facebook page Central West Drought Care Packages for more information, or drop off donations at 172 London Road or at Kadina B & B at 22 Mengarvie Street.

Heavy Vehicle Route Upgrade Complete A road upgrade to create a major heavy vehicle route linking the Newell Highway to busy grain handling facilities at Wirrinya, south-west of Parkes, is now complete. The changes include a 12.6 km section of the road, known as Bewleys Road in the Weddin Shire, and Wirrinya Road in the Forbes Shire, was widened, had its culverts strengthened, intersections realigned and rail crossings improved to allow access for an increased number of heavy vehicles. The upgrade will allow B-doubles, road trains and other heavy vehicles to use the road as a direct route between the Newell Highway and Wirrinya. The upgrade has created a more direct heavy vehicle route which represents a distance saving of up to 37 kilometres per trip meaning the trucks will no longer need to travel through Forbes or Caragabal. The grain handling facility at Wirrinya received about 50,000 tonnes of grain each year by truck.

Challenge To MPs To Dig Into Own Pockets
Member for Orange Phil Donato MP has taken the lead to show his support for drought affected farmers by donating the 2.5% pay rise MPs have received to the drought charity Aussie Helpers. He feels the government have failed to deliver for farmers, and charities are now having to do the work. “I cannot in good conscience accept a pay rise while farmers, whom I proudly represent, are struggling through the worst drought in over three decades.”
He also put out a challenge to all regional and rural based MPs, both state and federal, to donate their pay rise and show their support for farmers and demonstrate leadership, which they were elected to do. “If government won’t provide freight subsidies for fodder, water, and stock to help farmers, the least they can do is open up their wallets,” said Phil. “Politicians received a 2.5% pay rise this year, but I don’t think it’s fair that we should get a pay rise when farmers are struggling.”

Use the same frame for a modern and contemporary feel when grouping family photos.
When a picture dominates a wall it creates drama.
We can have a beautiful and sensational piece of art, but if it is not displayed properly it will not be appreciated accordingly. An art collection can express your personality and give your home a sense of drama and excitement. Here are my five simple and easy rules to follow when hanging your artwork or treasured family photos. 1. Choose a wall that is the focal point of the room to ensure the art takes centre stage. If possible add feature lighting to really showcase it. 2. Artworks needs to be hung at eye level to demand attention. A general rule of thumb is to have the artwork’s centre at approximately 1.5 to 1.6m from the floor. 3. Consider the size of your artwork and select a wall that is in scale to its proportions. Never put small pictures on large walls. I do love it when an oversized picture dominates a wall to create drama. If your artwork is smaller consider display-
ing groups of your favourite pieces that will draw your attention upon entering the room. 4. If you are positioning your art near or above furniture consider its size and scale as this will interact with the art. If you place your canvas above a sofa or buffet for example, it can’t extend over the length of these pieces to work visually. 5. Try grouping family photos in either random patterns or symmetrical to make an artistic design statement. For an eclectic look use a collection of antiqued and embossed frames to create a more relaxed feel. Alternatively, you can use the same frame for a modern and contemporary feel. For guaranteed success lay your pattern on the floor before you begin.

Painting With Kindness
Currajong Disability Services (CDS) has again felt the generosity of the community with the Parkes Painting Group making a donation. The group donated $1,000 raised from their exhibition held in late April this year. Kim Chambers and Helen Huntly, whose grandson Blake is at Currajong, handed the cheque to Currajong Chairman, Neil Unger. “We continue to be overwhelmed and appreciative of the kindness of the Parkes business community,” said Neil. It is quite unbelievable to amount of donations and generosity we have received in the last six months.”

OUR Bloke Tony Fisher How long have you lived in Parkes and what do you like most about living here? I have lived in Parkes for 35 years. I grew up on the farm at Yarrabandai. The best thing about Parkes was bringing my family up here. A great environment for all aspects of their lives. The caring community is one of the best. Where do you work or what do you do currently and what do you enjoy about it? I am retired after 41 years in the electrical industry. I have turned my hobby of lead lighting into a small business - something I enjoy with a passion. I just enjoy doing good work for customers. What do you do in your spare time and on weekends? My other time is spent with my grandchildren, working as a volunteer coordinator for Parkes Palliative Care, working with bereaved parents in the Central West and as an Elvis Festival volunteer. I also enjoy water skiing, swimming and driving the old Holden with the retro caravan behind. What are you really good at? I am really good at getting into mischief with the grandkids! And getting into trouble with their parents (lol). If you could have a superpower what would it be? If I had a super power, it would be to visit someone very special in heaven. What is your pet hate? My pet hate is gossip, and how that affects the people involved! Tell us about your best holiday. I have travelled overseas, but the best holidays were to Wyangala water skiing every January with family and friends - the absolute best times!

Drones Save Council Time And Money
Drone technology has opened up an array of time and cost saving applications, and the Parkes Shire is welcoming it with open arms. A number of Parkes Shire Council staff are undertaking a training course in drone operation and Civil Aviation Safety Authority’s (CASA) compliance as part of a wider program to incorporate the technology into asset management and other applications. Council’s Director of Infrastructure Andrew Francis said Council has teamed with The Institute of Drone Technology for drone flight training as well as ensuring all staff trained in drone usage are compliant with the stringent CASA guidelines for Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS). “All trained staff will attain their remote pilot license which is the precursor to Council obtaining its own operator’s licence. We will eventually have a certified aviation management system for our drones.” The use of drones and other smart community technology will assist in asset management and maintenance as well as providing environmental monitoring opportunities for noxious weeds and other problems such as salinity. “There are many time and cost saving applications for drones including inspection of assets at height (sporting oval lights, water reservoir covers and platforms), road conditions, flood response, geotechnical monitoring, thermal heat mapping of building roof insulation effectiveness, hydrology, water pollution, vegetation analysis as well as parks and sporting oval watering performance. The drones will also be used to monitor drainage issues and digital capture for town planning,” said Andrew. One of the key uses will be for leak detection in the hundreds of kilometres of council water mains, particularly in hilly terrain to the east of Parkes. A Cracker Of A Weekend Around The Fire Over the past decade, Orange has become recognised as one of Australia’s finest culinary regions. The first ever Orange Winter Fire Festival will have the town bursting with great food, drink and cultural events, all with a wintry flavour from 3rd to 5th August. The festival will capitalise on the town’s winemaking status as some of the best local drops are showcased at events inspired by classic Australiana images, such as crackling bonfires and chargrilled feasts. The festival kicks off on Friday with the nearby village of Millthorpe being transformed into a winter wonderland as country-folk duo Smith and Jones light up the stage and Pym Street bustles with food and wine market stalls. Meanwhile, back in Orange, Ross Hill Wines will host acclaimed chef Michael Manners, who’ll serve up a casual meal of soup and paella by an outdoor fireplace. The fire theme continues on Saturday. The standout event sees Small Acres Cyder, See Saw wines and Canobolas Dance Hall join forces for a raucous night of ‘wassailing’ by the bonfire in preparation for spring. For the uninitiated, wassailing is an ancient act of chanting to trees, thus ensuring their prosperity. There will be poetry sessions, ‘astronomical journeys’, char grilled feasts and rich red wines under expansive starry night skies, huddling up to a fireplace in a country pub or restaurant for a Sunday roast plus so much more over the festival. A road trip to the Orange Winter Fire Festival would make for a pretty perfect winter weekend Orange Winter Fire Festival 2018 will take place from Friday, August 3 to Sunday, August 5. Head to www.orangewinterfirefestival. com.au for event and ticket information.
