JUMPING FOR JOY… Parkes Public School students took part in a range of skipping activities on Wednesday for the school’s record 35th consecutive Jump Off event.
Parkes Public School Jumps Into Record Books
Parkes Public School will always be one jump ahead of the rest of Australia’s schools as the only participant to take part in the Heart Foundation’s Jump Rope for Heart every year since its inception in 1983. On Wednesday 435 students skipped the morning away celebrating its 35th annual Jump Off day. “It is an event embedded into our school culture with the date set on our calendar every year,” said Principal Ben Smith. “There are so many benefits, with great community participation in the Jump Off, it encourages a healthy lifestyle for students and results in greater focus in the classroom. And the kids love it with every single student taking part, including students in the support classes.” More than 90% of Australian schools
have participated in the annual event with more than 300,000 students in over 1,300 schools taking part each year. “This is one of the best jump off days I have ever been to,” said Heart Foundation Jump Rope Field Officer Alex Fernandez. “It was very structured with lots of skipping workshops and all the students had a great time showing off their skills and celebrating this unique milestone.” For Wiradjuri language teacher Lionel Lovett it was a special celebration as he used to take part in the annual event when he was at Parkes Public. Heart Foundation Chief Executive Officer NSW, Kerry Doyle thanked and congratulated Parkes Public School for its extraordinary long-running commitment. “It is a wonderful achievement.”

MAYORAL NOTES This week Council crews completed the new fitness station at Lindner Oval in Peak Hill featuring a five-station exercise area. Other improvements will include a playground with climbing equipment, a double flying fox and shade cover, seating, filtered water station and shade trees. The project is jointly funded by the NSW Government’s Social housing Improvement Fund. It aims to facilitate access to free, modern and exercise-based infrastructure to increase the attractiveness of recreational space and encourage active and healthy lifestyle choices. This week we marked Homelessness Week, aimed at raising awareness of the 116,000 Australians experiencing homelessness and develop solutions of how to combat the issue. In an effort to tackle the lack of social and affordable housing across the region and determine what action needs to be taken to better support people in need,

haviours of young drivers and passengers and is targeted at local Year 10 students in the Parkes, Forbes and Lachlan Shires. Congratulations to all who have been involved in the program over the last 10 years, in particular Melanie Suitor, Councils’ Road Safety and Injury Prevention Officer. We look forward to continuing to support the program as part of our commitment to help reduce road incidents. Locals are invited to the dress rehearsal on Monday, 13th August at Parkes High School Multi-Purpose Centre at 7pm. Remember to drop by our Council stand at the Tullamore Show this Saturday. Member for Orange Phil Donato MP handed a $5,000 cheque to Brett Dean, President of the Parkes Gun Club last Thursday after its successful application through the Local Sport Grant Program. The club will purchase a third clay pigeon machine to cater for its approximately 35 members, but also up to 40 visitors that turn up on club days. Brett said the socialisation aspect of the club was of particular benefit to local farmers. “It’s an outing where they don’t have to think about what’s going on at the farm.”
Why do you like skipping?
Isabella Barnden (Year 1): I like it because it makes me fit. It is my favourite activity to do during break time at school, especially long rope skipping.
Jonathan Wilkinson (Year 1): I like skipping because when I make a mistake and I can just try again, and it makes me fit and healthy. I enjoy playing tag too, but skipping is the best.
Emma Hando (Year 2): I like skipping because you can do cool tricks. My favourite is the pretzel where you have to put your arm under your leg. The other tricks I enjoy are criss cross and the double under.
More Support For Farmers From Government And Community Central West farming families will get help following an announcement on Sunday by Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Federal Member for Riverina and Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack. They announced additional drought support measures of $190 million including additional support for mental health services and community organisations. Michael said immediate additional financial support was available to those who need it most. Also announced were further significant changes to the existing Farm Household Allowance scheme which will provide two lump sum supplementary payments worth up to $12,000 for eligible households. The Government is also
changing the assets test to allow thousands more farmers to access support. “I strongly urge farmers to seek help, to not self-assess, to make sure they find out what assistance they can be eligible for,” Michael said. Big W in Parkes has joined up with Rural Aid by making up hampers for farming families. Rural Aid supplied a list of specific items available at Big W. The items are flagged in the shop with the Rural Aid sign and customers can choose to buy individual items or a whole hamper for a total of $165.75. The aim is to make up 100 hampers over the next 50 days, which will be distributed by the Country Women’s Association.

New Record For Parkes Visitor Information Centre

She is with Cr Karen McKeown, LGNSW Board Director and Gabrielle Upton, Minister for Local Government. Right: Cr Ken Keith, Mayor of Parkes and Cathy Treasure, Parkes Elvis Festival received the award for the Innovation in Special Events category.
Parkes Shines At Local Government Awards
The Parkes Elvis Festival keeps on rocking and rolling in accolades taking home a second gold in as many weeks. The festival won gold at the Local Government R H Dougherty Awards in Sydney last week as joint winner with the Flavours of Mudgee Festival of the Innovation in Special Events (Division A) category. “Each year we aim to make the festival new, exciting and unique, and in 2017 we introduced new elements including the Heatbreak Hotels and misting fans, free water refill stations, Elvis public art, live streaming of events, and an innovative PR campaign that achieved a media reach of 200+ million worldwide,” said Parkes Elvis Festival Director Cathy Treasure. Parkes gained a second award with Brand and Marketing Manager, Katrina
Dwyer winning the R H Dougherty Award for Outstanding Individual Contribution for the significant role she plays in the successful delivery of Council’s internal and external communications. “Katrina is so deserving of this accolade, having dedicated herself to the organisation and our community for over 10 years,” said Parkes Shire Mayor, Cr Ken Keith OAM. Member for Orange Philip Donato MP extended his congratulations to Parkes on its well-deserved achievements making it stand out as one of the best and brightest. “I’m thrilled Parkes was mentioned not once, but twice in these prestigious awards. It’s fantastic when the efforts of our smaller cities are acknowledged on a larger scale,” he said.
A record number of people made use of the Parkes Visitor Information Centre (VIC). Almost 30,000 visitors were welcomed through the VIC’s doors in the 2017/18 financial year resulting in a 24% increase in visitor numbers compared to the previous year. The number of visiting tour groups also increased by 19.04%. Tourism Team Leader Jaimee Timmins said a number of small improvements to onsite amenities and customer service products had resulted in the biggest and best year to-date in terms of visitation. “Last year we introduced volunteer support to assist with customer service, revitalised both the indoor and outdoor seating areas, introduced new information touch screens and a V3 booking widget, and refreshed each of the four museums.” “More recently we have introduced new operating hours in an effort to provide the best possible visitor experience, while maintaining our service standards and becoming more cost efficient,” said Jaimee. The new operating hours are Monday to Friday from 9am to 4pm, and Saturday, Sunday & Public Holidays from 10am to 3pm. During busier times, like the Parkes Elvis Festival, the Visitor Information Centre will extend its hours to open 9am to 5pm daily. The Parkes Visitor Information Centre was recently recognised as a finalist in the Visitor Information Services category, for its quality customer service and commitment to enhancing the visitor experience.

A Café With Heart And Soul An uplifting comment from a family member was all it took for a seed to be planted that would grow into a flourishing community fellowship café. Last Saturday the Soul Café celebrated its fifth anniversary with more than 40 people enjoying not only good conversation but excellent home-made slices and other organic delicacies, freshly ground coffee and of course birthday cake. When Carole Corbett saw how churches were being converted into cafes and eating establishments on her last pilgrimage to the British Isles, a spark was ignited to do something similar in Parkes. “I’ve been cooking since childhood, and used to invite the sheep shearers for a daily lunch in our
home in Trundle.” She also remembered a comment by her aunt that she had a gift for organising and she should use it to the benefit of the ministry. She had no trouble getting the green light from the parish council to start a café in the St Georges Church Hall and on 3rd August 2013 the Soul Café opened its doors. Twice a month, on the first two Saturdays, the Soul Café offers patrons a delicious and very reasonable menu, all made by Carole, but also a convivial atmosphere where people can relax and chat for as long as they want to. “The beauty of it is that even if you come alone, there will always be someone to talk to.”
Celebrating the Soul Café’s fifth birthday were Zilda Watt from Alectown, Carole Corbett and Liesel Walters. Zilda and Liesel have birthdays close to the Soul Café’s.

Dental Health Week is the Australian Dental Association’s major annual oral health promotion event. Its aim is to educate Australians about the importance of maintaining good oral health. The key messages are: • Brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste. • Clean in between teeth at least once a day with floss or an interdental brush. • Eat a healthy balanced diet and limit sugar intake. • Regularly visit the dentist for check-ups and preventive treatment. These messages will be reinforced with a cheeky tagline, Watch Your Mouth. Sadly not everyone is doing it at the moment as the reality is that many Australians are not heeding these messages: 65% of Australians have not seen a dentist in the last two years, 50% are only brushing their teeth once a day, nearly 40% never floss or clean between their teeth, and 73% of young people (14-18 years) are consuming too much sugar. Start conversations about ‘watching your mouth’ to make oral health a high priority.

OUR Bloke Bill Thomas How long have you lived in Parkes and what do you like most about living here? I partly completed my apprenticeship in Parkes in the mid-Sixties and came back here to live 28 years ago. Parkes ticks a lot of boxes for me. A friendly, go ahead town with a very cooperative and proactive Council and it is where I met my soul mate. Where do you work or what do you do currently and what do you enjoy about it? I no longer work but I get a lot of satisfaction tutoring kids in maths and English. I also enjoy setting up the necessary equipment for our new Parkes Dragon Boat Club to get us on the water. What do you do in your spare time and on weekends? Recently I have proudly helped to establish the Parkes Dragon Boat Club. It goes without saying that on weekends I will be out on a waterway (mostly the beautiful Lake Endeavour), either steering or paddling a dragon boat. What are you really good at? My wife thinks I am good at everything, probably because I built her a castle in our back yard. I guess for my age I must be ok at dragon boating as I made the Western NSW team for the nationals this year. If you could have a superpower what would it be? If I were blessed with a superpower it would be to heal all chronic pain sufferers and house all homeless people. What is your pet hate? I have no time for litterbugs or smokers who toss their bumpers on the ground or in the gutter.

YOUR HEALTH Matters
Stop Type 2 Diabetes Before It’s Too Late! Stop your blood sugar from becoming type 2 diabetes before it is too late! Did you know diabetes: • Is the leading cause of blindness in working age adults. • Is the leading cause of kidney failure and dialysis. • Increases the risk of heart attacks and stroke by up to four times. • Is a major cause of limb amputations. • Affects mental health as well as physical health. • Depression, anxiety and distress occur in more than 30% of all people with diabetes. This is where your friendly staff at Parkes Pharmacy can help. They are available at any time to discuss Type 2 diabetes prevention and management. There are no early symptoms of high blood sugar. Many Australians have undiagnosed type 2 diabetes and don’t realise this is damaging their bodies. What’s more, 60% of type 2 diabetes can be prevented! The good news is, our pharmacists can conduct a simple check for you to learn your risk and help prevent type 2 diabetes before it’s too late. One of the best ways to prevent diabetes is to cut back on your sugar intake. For the average person, you should limit your intake to six teaspoons a day. Sugar can be hidden in so-called ‘healthy food’, so learn how to read food labels – every 4g of sugar is equivalent to one teaspoon. Diabetes Australia estimates that 2 million Australians are at high risk of developing Type 2 diabetes and another 500,000 have undiagnosed Type 2 diabetes. Undiagnosed (and poorly controlled) diabetes can lead to the health complications listed above, so it’s extremely important to get yourself assessed. Come and see us today!
