Sarah Shares Her Favourite Things “Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens…”

Most of us know the words to the classic song My Favourite Things from The Sound of Music.

For Sarah Bowkett the song took on new meaning the past two years as she worked hard creating a beautiful exhibition of her favourite things.

This afternoon she will take a giant step to hopefully establish herself as an artist when her first solo exhibition of drawings, paintings and pottery, called My Favourite Things, opens at the Parkes Library.

In a back room at Currajong Disability Services where she created her art works with art therapist Maralyn Nash, Sarah is

extremely humble, but very excited about her achievement. “I hope I can make a career from my art,” said Sarah who will celebrate her 30th birthday next month. “It’s always been my dream to have a job and earn a salary.”

Sarah has loved art since school, but when she started classes with Maralyn they began exploring her interests in learning and art history. When looking through a book of famous paintings, the first one that caught Sarah’s eye was Starry, Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh. “It was my favourite painting as a teenager,” said Maralyn. That was the basis for the first painting Sarah did with Maralyn.

MAYORAL NOTES This week the Parkes Shire welcomed twelve international Consul Generals and government officials as part of a trade mission to the Central West – a fantastic opportunity to showcase the opportunities available here in Parkes, build international connections, foster relationships, and identify partnering opportunities.

As part of the trip the delegates visited the Parkes National Logistics Hub, attended the launch of the 2019 Parkes Elvis Festival, and were treated to an exclusive tour inside the CSIRO Parkes Radio Telescope.

The visit also coincided with an announcement by Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW John Barilaro of a new Investment Attraction Package for regional NSW. The 2019 Parkes Elvis Festival program was officially launched this week. This year’s Festival theme is All Shook Up, celebrating Elvis’ iconic song and all things ‘50s. Tickets are on sale now to all events, including the 2019 Feature Concert Series, featuring US Elvis tribute artist Ted Torres Martin. We can’t wait to get All Shook Up in January!

Thank you to the residents, affected business operators, agency representatives and service providers who attended the Parkes Shire Drought Forum this week.

Over 90 participants, attended the community forum on Tuesday, participating in group discussions with the aim for formulating a short, medium and long-term plan.

Forum facilitators, Bob and Lynda from NoaGroup Consultants will collate the outputs from the forum discussions and supply to Council to draft a report for public comment.

A reminder to residents to do a spring clean ahead of the 2019 Bulky Waste Clean-up. Between Monday, 17th September and Friday, 21st September, residents currently receiving a domestic waste and recycling collection service can place waste neatly next to the edge of the kerb.

In the exhibition there are two paintings Sarah created after Claude Monet, but the one that gives her real satisfaction is Sarah’s Mona Lisa, after Leonardo da Vinci.

“I’ve always wanted to do this one as it is so famous, and I feel very proud of it.”

Over the two years Sarah explored many different techniques and did very intricate work to create her art work.

“She is very meticulous and works with great detail, while she is also very good at follow up on suggestions,” said Maralyn. “A solo exhibition is a massive achievement for any artist. Sarah has put a lot of hard work into it.”

The exhibition includes a selection of Sarah’s favourite things that she believes in.”

I hope everyone will enjoy my artworks as much as I have enjoyed creating them.”

The exhibition opens at 3pm today and runs until 21st September. All works are for sale.

The rosy future predicted for Parkes was given a major lift on Monday when Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW John Barilaro announced a landmark Investment Attraction Package for Regional NSW. The package includes financial incentives targeted towards offsetting government levies and duties, such as payroll tax, and relocation assistance to drive new jobs and investment in regional NSW. The Deputy Premier said the package would transform regional NSW’s attractiveness to interstate and global businesses and make regions across the state even more competitive. “This is a massive boost for businesses and job seekers in regional NSW.”

The Investment Attraction Package includes a $20 million Regional Investment Attraction Fund for grants and interest free loans to offset government levies and duties to eligible businesses that want to invest and grow in regional NSW, which will lead to new jobs; Skills Relocation Assistance - $10 million in grants of up to $10,000 per eligible skilled worker to help meet the cost of moving from the city to the country; Investment concierge – supporting businesses investing in or moving to regional NSW, working with an appointed Regional Investment Coordinator to provide easy access to incentives, smooth the planning process, help lodge applications and liaise with government departments.

2019 Free Cuppa: Organisers of the Free Cuppa for the Driver scheme are inviting local businesses to register for phase nine of the successful driver fatigue awareness campaign which will operate from 1st March to 31st May 2019. The scheme encourages visiting drivers to stop at participating businesses for a free cup of tea or coffee to take a break from driving long distances. Participating businesses have reported an almost 30% increase in sales in previous years, with 17 participating businesses across the Parkes, Forbes and Lachlan Shire Councils last year. CDS Drought Drive: The recent drought appeal run by Currajong Disability Services (CDS) has once again demonstrated how the Parkes community stand together when it matters most. Often the beneficiary of goodwill, CDS Direct Care Team Leader Indigo Kriedemann decided it would be a great idea to help those in the agricultural sector we rely on for the basics. Yet it wasn’t just about giving back it was about making a difference. “I saw many farmers and their families struggling without the necessities,” said Indigo. “A few of us banded together, and staff and clients chipped in with a range of goods from canned food to toiletries and some luxury items,” said Indigo. The items were dropped off at the Salvation Army in Parkes for distribution.

Significant Milestone For Inland Rail

‘I’m In Love, I’m All Shook Up’

In April 1957 Elvis Presley’s song All Shook Up topped the US Billboard Hot 100 for eight weeks.

In January 2019 Parkes is going to be All Shook Up for five days in a celebration of the 50s at the Parkes Elvis Festival.

“Every year we aim to make the festival bigger and better, and we have done it again with over 200 events,” said Parkes Elvis Festival Director Cathey Treasure at the launch of the program on Monday.

More good news came from Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW John Barilaro who announced the NSW Government would continue its support for one of the country’s most iconic events for a further three years.

Cathy focused on some of the highlights of the festival saying: “We are very excited to have Ted Torres Martin from the US as our feature artist,” said Cathy. He will be doing four different concerts.”

Australian singer-songwriter and guitarist Russell Morris. “It is very fitting that he is our recipient in the year of the 50th anniversary of the moon landing as his 1969 hit The Real Thing was the theme song for The Dish movie.” Russel will do a special performance on Wednesday night.

Fans of Phil Emmanual, who was inducted in the Wall of Fame this year, can look forward to a special tribute concert organised by his brother Darcy following the sudden passing of Phil earlier this year.

After two years of environmental assessment and consultation with landowners, councils and the broader community, planning approval was granted last week for the construction of the Parkes to Narromine section of Inland Rail.

Inland Rail Chief Executive Officer, Richard Wankmuller said the planning approval was a significant milestone with the first track expected to be laid later this year.

Parkes and Peak Hill residents will soon see physical evidence of the project with two main site offices to be opened soon in Parkes and Peak Hill. The offices will complement the recently opened Inland Rail Community Working Hub in Parkes.

Some businesses have already reaped some benefit of the project. ARTC purchased five new Toyota Hilux vehicles from a local dealership in Parkes for site visits and community engagement, while Parkes and Forbes-based companies Ausrock Quarries and Calvani Crushing have won contracts worth $7 million to supply materials.

“All the wheels are in motion for the construction phase to move forward. Just last month, industry briefings calling for expressions of interest (EOI) for work required on the route were held in Parkes, Narromine and Dubbo with over 200 EOI registrations from local businesses”.

The 104km section from Parkes to Narromine will utilise most of the existing rail corridor that is operated by ARTC as part of its interstate rail freight network, and a newly built 5.3km long rail connection to the Broken Hill line to the west of Parkes. Construction work will involve track formation, upgrading the track and culverts as well as providing additional flexibility through three new crossing loops at Goonumbla, Peak Hill and Timjelly.

SPRINGDrink Mix up this gorgeous summer sangria for any occasion.

Ingredients: 1 teaspoon ginger root ground.; cinnamon sticks.; 1/3 cup water; 1/3 cup white sugar; 2 cups fresh summer berries (blueberries, halved strawberries, raspberries); bottle Riesling or Pinot Grigio (750 ml/1 liter); 1 lemon or orange, sliced; 1 to 2 fresh mint leaves for a garnish (optional) Method: In a small saucepan, bring water and sugar to a boil.

Reduce heat and stir until sugar is fully dissolved. Remove syrup from heat and whisk in ginger. Set aside to cool. In a 1-litre carafe, add the berries, lemon or orange slices, halved cinnamon sticks, cooled simple syrup and white wine. Carefully stir the sangria (do not crush berries).

Let sangria rest in refrigerator for at least an hour (up to 24 hours) before serving. Serve over ice and garnish with fresh mint leaves.

Not A ‘Waste’ Of A Day

‘Big Hunk O' Love’ For ‘I Will Survive’ Two icons met in Parkes last week when the Silver City Stiletto train made a stopover on its way to the Broken Heel Festival. It was a case of Elvis meets Priscilla - Queen of the Desert!

With 120 passengers on board, Parkes Shire Council grabbed the opportunity to promote the 2019 Parkes Elvis Festival.

John 'Elvis' Collins entertained passengers as they stepped off the train to give them a feel of the vibe of the Parkes Elvis Festival.

Passengers were very keen to get selfies with Elvis (John Collins) and Priscilla (Maude Boate).

Maude is known as the Queen of Lismore's drag queens, and one of the celebrity queens of the Broken Heel Festival.

It is not every school day you get to ‘hug’ a python. This was one of several activities more than 70 students from Parkes and Forbes experienced for Schools Tree Day at Eco Day 2018 last week.

Central West Lachlan Landcare (CWLL) organised workshops and bus travel for school representatives from years 5 and 6 to be involved in a variety of environmental and rural activities.

Students were able to make NetWaste worm farms; soils with Local Land Services; see a Parkes Shire Council weeds demonstration and talk; learn about recycled water with Parkes Shire and mascot Banjo; Eco Art with Ro Burns; and go on a saleyards tour with Cooper Byrnes from Langlands Hanlon.

The day finished with a hands on workshop by Paul Kirk (aka The Snake Man) and an interactive workshop with Chris Dart from Netwaste, helping students to reduce the waste that goes to landfill.

Paul allows the students to get up close with reptiles. He talked about snake safety and how to handle non-venomous snakes.

They also learned what to do if they are bitten and then had a chance to meet some friendly pythons.

“We want the students to go away thinking about what they can do in their own homes and schools to make a difference and prevent needless wastage, and the connection between humans and the environment,” said Margot Jolly, CWLL Chairperson.

Local State Member of Parliament Philip Donato was there to recognise the support of the Parliamentary Friends of Landcare and participated with the students in activities. Philip was joined by Cr Bill Jayet from Parkes Shire Council and Cr Jeff Nicholson from Forbes Shire Council.

Australian Children’s Laureate In Parkes “Our imaginations can take us anywhere we want to be.”

Morris Gleitzman, bestselling Australian children’s author and Australian Children’s Laureate for 2018-2019, was at the Parkes Library on Wednesday as part of a seven week schools tour around the country.

He held three sessions for primary and high school students from across the Shire and Forbes sharing stories, anecdotes and secrets of writing. He started off telling them that he used to have a big problem writing the first sentence of a story. “I would sit there for hours, until I discovered the secret to starting a story.”

He read the first sentences of several of his books to illustrate that the main character of any story needs to have a problem. “It needs to be declared in the first or second sentence of the story,” said Morris.

Students were enthralled by his energy, passion and sense of humour, and asked many questions. One student even advised him “if he didn’t want to be an author anymore he could be a comedian”.

Home school student Annabelle Border said her favourite thing was his tips for writing.

Morris’ books explore serious and sometimes confronting subjects in humorous and unexpected ways. His titles include Two Weeks With The Queen, Grace, Doubting Thomas, Bumface, Give Peas A Chance, Extra Time, Loyal Creatures, Snot Chocolate and the series Once, Then, Now, After, Soon and Maybe.

His role as the Australian Children’s Laureate is to promote the power of reading to children.

Morris’ visit to Parkes was supported by the Charles Sturt University CommunityUniversity Partnership Program - Head of Campus Small Grant Program.

Volunteers Run Radio Station

Community radio station 2LVR, Lachlan Valley Community Radio Inc, invites everyone to its open day on 23 September in Forbes.

It was established in 1992 and is completely run by 28 volunteer staff, with the exception of one part-time office employee.

The announcers provide 15 hours live programs each day reaching an audience of around 30,000. Broadcasts are 24 hours a day in FM stereo. Programs are streamed all over the world on the web.

The overnight programs are produced by a volunteer, as well as local news, while national news on the hour comes by satellite from 2UE in Sydney.

All local community service announcements are produced by volunteers and are free of charge. The main source of income is from sponsors advertising on the station, plus government grants from time to time.

An annual member’s contribution of $10 is a further source of income with about 250 members currently.

As there is a lot of costs to keep the station on the air, there is always a need for volunteers to help out, or sponsors to advertise.

Tell us about your best holiday. I spent seven weeks in America last year and had the absolute best time. It still wasn’t long enough! A couple of highlights were meeting some incredible friends on Contiki, hiking and camping through the most amazing national parks (especially the Rocky Mountains and Yellowstone), skiing Whistler Mountain, having a hot chocolate at Central Perk, watching multiple Broadway musicals and absolutely everything about New York City!

Ankle Sprains Lateral ligament sprains of the ankle are one of the most common sports injuries, and because they are so common they are often managed too casually and many go untreated. From a clinical point of view the problem with a lateral ligament sprain of the ankle is that they have a very high incidence of recurrence. Gribble et al, 2016, Attenborough et al, 2015 and Tanen et al, 2014 (references can be supplied upon request), found 30-50% of the athletic population and 20% of the general population will go on to suffer from chronic ankle symptoms. These symptoms are often referred to as chronic ankle instability and include pain, swelling, laxity and instability.

The contributing factors to the development of chronic ankle instability include: not seeking medical attention for the primary lateral ankle sprain; and returning to sport when pain has decreased but function has not been fully restored. The absence of pain does not mean that you are ready to return to sport. Decreases in strength, range of movement, proprioception and balance need to be restored.

Doherty et al, 2016 found that exercise therapy when performed in high doses (5 x 30 mins per week for six weeks) reduced the chances of recurrent lateral ligament sprains in the ankle by 42% and bracing/ taping reduced the risk by 62%. It is currently recommended that you brace or tape your ankle for every game and training session for at least six weeks.

The decision to return to sport after a lateral ligament sprain should be based on strength, balance and hop tests rather than time or absence of pain.

PARKES SPORT Parkes Women’s Bowling

Parkes Soccer Score Big

The Parkes & District Amateur Soccer Association received a big boost last week towards upgrading amenities at the soccer fields.

Parkes is one of several clubs in NSW to benefit from $4.1 million from the 2015 Asian Cup Legacy Fund. Parliamentary Secretary for Western NSW Rick Colless was in Parkes to hand over a cheque of $150,000 to President Kevin Medlyn.

Kevin said the club was no longer able to attract big tournaments to Parkes because

of its lack of suitable amenities. “We will refurbish the change rooms, add toilets and showers and build a new entrance.”

The facilities are also not suitable for local players as the club saw an increase of 200 members this year following the Government incentive to get kids active. “We have 500 players here on a Saturday, and 150 on Sundays using the facilities,” said Kevin.

The total cost of the renovation would be over $300,000 with the club putting in $20,000.

The first round of the Championship Fours were played in blustery conditions on Tuesday with E Miller, K Keogh, R Went and L Byrne defeating M Miller, M Riordan, M Hawken and A Jones.

The draw for the second round on 18th September are: M Rodgers, M Iffland, L Orr, M Grant vs J McPhee, H Harvey ,L Baker, K Evans; and M Iffland, V Westcott, G Carty, C Frame vs E Miller, K Keogh, R Went, L Byrne.

Nominations for the minor singles and minor pairs are now open.

The Jones Shield will be played at Condobolin on Thursday, 20th September.

A Parkes team will be travelling to Blayney this week to compete in the Taber Shield, we wish them luck!

Bowlers are needed to play at 1pm on Saturday, 22nd September as a large group of bowlers from Belrose will be here.
