CUNNINGHAM’S LET THE SHOW BEGIN… The ‘new’ Little Theatre in Parkes was officially opened on Monday after the completion of a substantial refurbishment program.

Little Theatre Realises Big Dream

The spotlight was on the Little Theatre in Parkes on Monday for the official opening of the venue’s completed upgrades and renovations.

One year ago Parliamentary Secretary for Western NSW Rick Colless announced a grant of $162,000 from the Stronger Country Communities Fund, and on Monday Rick and Nationals candidate for Orange, Kate Hazelton, witnessed the realisation of this major revamp. The project included 170 new seats, a beautifully refurbished foyer, larger access doors and a fully repainted interior.

“The foyer sets the scene,” said Rick, “and when you walk in you get an appreciation of the results of how this money has delivered.”

“There is a true sense of ‘coming to the theatre’, of coming somewhere that is spe-

cial,” said Deputy Mayor Barbara Newton, who was impressed with the comfort and the view of the stage from every seat in the house.

Barbara reiterated a point made by Parkes Musical & Dramatic Society member Christa Radley, that many regional centres import directors, designers and choreographers, but in Parkes this is all drawn from local talent, and so the talent here is being nurtured.

President of the Parkes M & D, Lyn Townsend, thanked Rick Colless, the Parkes Council, all previous presidents and workers of the theatre saying: “We are continually striving to raise the bar.”

Guests were treated to performances by Neil Westcott, James Whalan, and a quartet of children, before the official plaque was unveiled.

It was a happy day for Trundle last week with the completion of the Trundle Hotel verandah.

Trundle Hotel Verandah Restored The restoration of the second longest hotel balcony in Australia was marked last Friday at the 100-year-old iconic Trundle Hotel.

The hotel received $100,000 last year to restore its balcony under the Government’s Heritage Near Me Activation Grants Program.

Nationals candidate for Orange Kate Hazelton and Parliamentary Secretary for Western NSW, Rick Colless were in Trundle last Friday to mark the completion of restoration work on the balcony.

“Grants such as these go a long way.

They support locals and businesses, bring more visitors to the area and boost community morale,” said Rick.

“These grants acknowledge and support the vital role owners and managers of locally listed heritage items play in protecting our local heritage,” said Kate.

The funding went towards restoring the remaining 60 metres of the 90-metre balcony and renovating a derelict unit on the first floor to be used for an artist in residency program.

Peter Kelly, Chair of the Trundle Progress Association, said it all started in 2012. “We held a fundraising ball raising a few thousand dollars. We welcomed the grant with open arms as we really needed it to get this project up and running.”

Community members have also given more than 1,500 hours of their time over six years to help give the town a face lift.

So far 75% of the shop fronts have been repainted, every verandah repaired, original signage repainted and other extensive work carried out on the Trundle Hotel, a great initiative for a small community.

“This is a very strong result for a small community of 750 residents,” said Andrew Rawsthorne, Volunteer Grants Officer from Trundle Progress Association. “The hotel now looks a million bucks. We’re over the moon, and I know the whole community is thrilled and grateful.”

Team Parkes Brings Back Birdman Trophy!

Team Parkes came home with the inaugural school trophy from the Birdman Rally held in Melbourne last weekend.

The impressive flight of 10m piloted by Year 12 Parkes Christian School student Jesse Magill was even more of a victory after the huge disappointment of the Parkes High School team not being able to participate due to the inherent risk to the pilot.

Parkes Christian School very generously welcomed the Parkes High students into the newly formed Team Parkes, and was happy to share the medals with their new team mates.

The 14 engineering students from Parkes

were the only entries from outside Victoria.

They worked tirelessly for five months perfecting their plane designs to get the longest flight leaping from a four-metre wharf into the Yarra River.

Thousands of spectators lined the banks of the Yarra to watch 19 pilots leap off the platform and raise money for charity.

Parkes Christian School won the Flying Class section in 2017 and was very excited to come away with another win for their fourth year of participation. It was the first time students from Parkes High School had participated.

Country Music Muster: The March Muster will feature visitors from the South Coast CMA over St Patrick’s Day Weekend on 16th and 17th March at the Starlight Lounge at the Parkes Services Club. There will be eight country vocalists, a poet and a keyboard player on board the bus. The program will run in three sessions over the two days. Saturday afternoon will commence around 2:30pm and continue until dinner.

The evening program will start around 7:30pm. Sunday morning will kick off at 10am. Non-performing visitors and locals are most welcome to all three sessions for only $5. Local performing members are encouraged to attend. Don’t forget your ‘little touch of green’.

What would you like to see added to the cultural scene of Parkes?

Elly Tom: I think a picture theatre would be fabulous. I know a lot of teenagers would like a tenpin bowling alley as a great place to go.

Christa Radley: I would like much more of everything cultural. I think Parkes has a great range of sporting options, but for those who are not sporty cultural opportunities are very limited.

Warwick Tom: I have had a vision for a long time of having a combined culture groups’ centre setup in Parkes. We have actually had the first few meetings of the ‘Parkes Shire Cultural Advisory Committee’ to get this up and running.

How long have you lived in Parkes and what do you like most about living here?

I have lived here since 1983. I love that Parkes has a sense of community and will support their own when times get tough.

Where do you work or what do you do currently and what do you enjoy about it? I am Service Coordinator of Community Transport at Neighbourhood Central.

I work with the most amazing team, both staff and volunteers and absolutely love going to work every day. I am very lucky.

What is your favourite thing to do when you have free time? I love the theatre and particularly watching the junior members develop through the years into strong, confident young adults.

What makes you proud? My children.

Every day, in different ways.

If you could be an animal which one would you choose, and why? Anything as long as it roams free.

Member for Orange, Phil Donato MP (left) handed over $28,050 in funding to Tim Watts of the PCYC last Friday from the 2018 Community Building Partnership Program.

The funding will go towards renovation of the foyer to ensure it complies with current workplace safety regulations, while the PCYC team are also modernising the space to give it a more ‘youth friendly’ feel. “The PCYC is a fantastic place for young people to learn new skills, get fit and make new friends,” said Phil. What is your all-time favourite movie, song and/or book, and why? Movie: Notting Hill. Song: this changes all the time at the moment it’s “I know it’s today” from Shrek as we are about to audition so this song is playing 24/7 and though I read a lot, I don’t really have a favourite book.

Tell us about your best holiday. Any one of the 14 cruises I have been on. (I’m a cruisaholic!)

What is on your bucket list? I’ve ticked most off, but there’s a few musical productions I aspire to direct: Mamma Mia, Billy Elliott, Wicked, Rocky Horror, Priscilla (though I suspect Parkes isn’t ready for the last two yet!)

Modern Slavery

Late last year, the Modern Slavery Bill 2018 was passed Federally in the NSW State Parliament heralding a new statutory modern slavery reporting requirement for larger companies in Australia.

Reporting obligations relate to the steps taken to respond to the risk of modern slavery in the operations and supply chains of the reporting entity and its controlled entities. The reporting criteria are mandatory.

It is crucial that reporting entities begin reviewing their supply chains and collecting data ahead of the introduction of reporting obligations. The first reporting year will be 1 July 2019 to 30 June 2020 At its broadest, the term ‘modern slavery’ refers to any situations of exploitation where a person cannot refuse or leave work because of threats, violence, coercion, abuse of power or deception. The Australian regime defines modern slavery to incorporate conduct that would constitute an offence under existing human trafficking, slavery and slavery-like offence provisions set out in Divisions 270 and 271 of the Commonwealth Criminal Code.

Modern slavery will encompass slavery, servitude, the worst forms of child labour, forced labour, human trafficking, debt bondage, slavery like practices, forced marriage and deceptive recruiting for labour or services. Entities will need to report if they carry on business in Australia with a minimum annual consolidated revenue of $100 million.

Entities in NSW will be obliged to report under the NSW Act if they have a turnover of $50 million. Corporate groups should obtain specific advice in relation to which entities are required to report and how joint reporting can work.

Once the Modern Slavery Act commences, a targeted regulatory regime will be introduced, under which large businesses will report annually. Those reports will be published on a public register.

2018 Apprentice Of The Year A third-year mechanical fitter was awarded the Lester Plummer Apprentice of the Year award at CMOC-Northparkes Mines recently.

Matt King was recognised for being a quiet achiever who takes on responsibility, leads others and consistently strives to improve and develop his skills. Matt also received exemplary results at TAFE, with four out of five assignments marked at over 95%.

“I feel extremely honoured to have received the Lester Plummer Apprentice of the Year award. During my apprenticeship I have been lucky enough to have worked with various tradespeople across site, who have positively influenced and developed my attitude, skills and knowledge,” said Matt.

The Lester Plummer Apprentice of the Year award was first introduced in 2016, in honour of friend and colleague, Lester Plummer, who passed away in 2015.

“Lester worked at Northparkes for many years displaying a keen interest in the development of our apprentices,” said Stacey Kelly, Manager – People, Safety and Environment. His caring and fun-loving nature, combined with his trade knowledge and skills, meant that he was a perfect match to mentor our apprentices.”

Brandon Keep, Luke Wallace, Oliver Dagger and Steven Butler, who finished their

apprenticeships last year, were also recognised for their efforts at the employee pipeline event that welcomed new employees to the business. The employee pipeline includes apprentices, trainees, graduates, scholarship holders and work placement students.

“By building the skills of young people, we are able to build a community of talented and experienced tradespeople whose skills will benefit both Northparkes and the community in which we live and work,” said Stacey.

Ladies Lounge Donation Currajong Disability Services (CDS) Sewing Group has again been the fortunate beneficiary of a kind donation from a local community group – the Ladies Lounge Parkes.

Co-ordinator/Founder of the Ladies Lounge, Maree Mulligan, and her fabulous group have long been supporters of CDS. “We had been setting aside some money each meeting to donate to the CDS Sewing Group,” said Maree. “Currajong is an important organisation in the community and we truly value them and the sewing group. “Today we are pleased to announce a donation of $110 to the Currajong Disability Services Sewing Group,” Maree said.

For CDS Sewing Group Co-ordinator Deitre Jackson, the funds are vital to enable the group to continue running and purchase necessary sewing supplies. “The generous donation will go to sewing and craft equipment,” said Deitre. “We will be able to purchase more cotton and other relevant items for our group to keep working,” she said. “It is these little but important community gestures that help organisations like us continue to survive and for that we are extremely thankful.”

Farewell Sue!

Sue Balemans retired last week after a stellar 21-and-a-half year career with Currajong Disability Services. Sue leaves to retire with her family in of all places, Kurrajong, in the Blue Mountains. “I am really looking forward to it and have had a lot of fun at CDS over the past 20 years,” she said. “I have made some tremendous friends in my time here and will miss everyone. It has been a big part of my life and I am grateful for all the experiences I have had. Many have become like family to me.”

Teams from Temora, Cowra, Orange, Dubbo, Bathurst and further afield attended the blue chip event. They were not disappointed with some outstanding individual and team performances.

For Parkes’ Currajong Disability Services Jamie Cook, Thomas Davis, Kyal Sauer and Tim Wheeler all performed admirably with ribbons for first, second and third in numerous events. It was an outstanding effort, however the day again belonged to Ian Kaupke winning three gold medals.

Only 12 months before he also scooped a bagful of medals.

“He is an outstanding athlete,” said Neil

Hamilton of Currajong. “He has a rich sporting background and is as comfortable running as he is doing martial arts.”

“The passion he shows for all the things he attempts is also admirable,” said Neil.

While Kaupke was one of many who performed well on the day, it was LiveBetter from Orange who stole the major gong. In their first attempt, LiveBetter dominated many of the events including the female races and relays.

“LiveBetter were very worthy winners and we are extremely happy they have participated in our carnival,” said organiser Indigo Kriedemann of Currajong.

“All the teams from all the providers should be pleased with their efforts. Without them, days like this can’t be a success and we are thankful for their sportsmanship and support,” she said.

Endeavour Dragons Head South The Shellharbour Regatta on the South Coast was another first for 11 members of the Parkes Dragon Boat Club (PDBC) last weekend.

The day of racing on Lake Illawarra started early morning with nine sports teams and 11 community teams competing.

Parkes combined with Forbes, Wagga Wagga and one Mudgee member to form two Waratahs teams for a great day of fun and friendship, with one of the combined teams qualifying for the finals. Paddling on salt water was also a first for many members.

“It was so much fun to be in a boat with all

of our friends from Forbes, the Wagga crew and Lynette from Mudgee,” said President of PDBC, Bill Thomas.

The next event for PDBC will be a campout at Dunn’s Swamp with other western region teams, followed by the participation of five PDBC members at the Nationals.

Linda Snyman, Donna and Warren Edwards, Rochelle Smith and Maggi Barnard will be racing with elite athletes from all over Australia in Canberra over Easter.

Winners for the day were Carol, Rosemary and Jan, runners-up Eileen, Hilda and Rhona, and ‘60’ club winners Eileen, Valmai, Jan and Merilyn. Thanks to Lea Orr for the birthday cake to celebrate March birthdays.

In the CWD Singles played at Cowra this week Kim Evans got through to the second round, while Maree Grant and Liz Byrne were only defeated on their final ends with the scores being level. Thanks to our players and markers from our club who helped make a great day.

The final of the Club Championship Singles will be played on 19th March between Cherie Frame and Maree Grant.

The Club Championship Pairs close 12pm on 19th March.

Pennants games commence on Thursday, 21st March against Forbes. The Pennant teams are Gwenda Carty, Kim Evans, Brenda Davies, Liz Byrne and Jan McPhee, Lorraine Baker, Robyn Morgan, Rhona Went. Good luck to our players.

The Trading Table will be held next week so please bring items for the table. The raffle prize will be a voucher for a Thai massage.
