CONGRATULATIONS… Margaret Dwyer celebrated her 90th birthday with the launch of her second novel of fiction called A Chain of Dreams.

A Celebration Fit for An Author

Local author Margaret Dwyer was not only the most popular person in Parkes on Saturday, but a new title was conferred on her. At the double celebration for the launch of her fourth book and marking her 90th birthday, Councillor Bill Jayet told the more than 100 people attending “Mardie is Parkes’ Barbara Cartland!”. Mardie, as she is known, sparkled and radiated youthfulness during Bill’s question and answer session about her life and her writing. “You do have the strangest questions,” she quipped when Bill asked her how she managed to get into the heads of her characters of the opposite sex. Staying with her characters, Mardie said the biggest surprise of the writing process was how her characters became very real. “They seemed to take over, and I wrote what they wanted me to write.” Following the “hard chat” session, Bill and

some of Mardie’s 14 great grandchildren launched her second book of fiction with confetti poppers. “We are all very proud of you,” said Bill. Mardie’s second book of fiction is a sequel to A Chain of Dreams published in 2016 and brings the O’Reagan family into the 21st century. Philippa O’Donnell read an excerpt from the book, Gemma Churchill shared a collection of amusing family stories and Hope Kealley-Smith performed songs while a long line of fans formed for Mardie to sign copies of her book. Bill quoted from You Never Walk Alone from the musical Carousel, sung by Mardie in the Parkes M & D production years ago: “Walk on, walk on with hope in your heart and you’ll never walk alone”. May is Macula Month May is Macula Month, and a good reminder that if you are over 50 you should have regular macula health checks. The macula is the most sensitive part of the retina that deals with fine detail. A healthy macula is vital for good vision. Macular Degeneration (MD) is a disease affecting the macula causing central vision loss making it difficult to read, recognise faces, watch TV and even obtain a driver’s license. MD is the leading cause of blindness in Australia. It is more common as we age, and the risk increases if there is a family history of macula problems or of smoking. At Hansen Eyecare Plus Parkes we have the gold standard equipment, Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) to help detect MD as early as possible. Ring or call in for an appointment.

Disaster Assistance For Parkes

Disaster relief for communities in the Parkes Local Government Area was announced following the destructive storm on 22nd January. The NSW State Emergency Service received more than 250 requests for assistance following the storm and flooding. The disaster relief was welcomed by the Member for Riverina and Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack. “It is a cruel irony that areas suffering from this insidious drought were hit by ferocious storms which did nothing to break the dry spell,” he said. Assistance is provided through the jointly funded Commonwealth-State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA). Financial support is available to help af-

fected individuals, small businesses, primary producers and councils to get back on their feet. Assistance measures available under the DRFA may include: help for eligible people whose homes or belonging has been damaged; support for affected local councils to help with the costs of cleaning up and restoring damaged essential public assets; concessional interest rate loans for small businesses, primary producers and nonprofit organisations; freight subsidies for primary producers and; grants to eligible non-profit organisations. More information is available at disasterassist.gov.au and the NSW emergency information and response website at emergency.nsw.gov.au.

Keeping Pets Warm In Winter

RSPCA NSW recommends a few key tips to keep your beloved pet warm and healthy this winter: • Sleeping: Outdoor pets need well-insulated shelter that is weather proof, such as the laundry or another protected area. Indoor pets will love it if their bed and blanket are placed in the cosiest part of the house. Older pets may need to wear a coat at night. Never use a hot water bottle or wheat bags, as these can overheat and cause burns. • Sunlight: Getting enough warmth is just as important during the day. Move kennels into the sun, and cat beds into light drenched windows. • Coats: If you’re out for a walk in winter consider a waterproof walking coat for your dog. Make sure the coat is fitted correctly and is not too tight or too loose. • Food: Pets feel hungrier in winter as they burn more calories to stay warm. Ask your vet if you’re not sure how much to feed your pet to avoid weight gain. • Water: Many dogs do not drink enough water during winter months. Add something like a stock cube, or a teaspoon of vegemite in warm water with their dinner. Make sure the water is warm, not hot. • Exercise: Exercise is important even in winter. Take your pet for a walk, making sure to accessorise short-haired breeds with a warm jacket. • Grooming: Pets’ fur is designed to keep the warmth against their skin, but the heating system doesn’t work right if their fur is matted or tangled. Regularly groom your pet. The Pet Barn in Parkes can supply your pets’ needs for the winter, including selfwarming beds and dog coats.

Day Of Thanks And Quiet Reflection Hundreds of Parkes residents turned up for the annual Anzac Day March led by 97-yearold World War II veteran Thomas Forrester. Tom, accompanied by his daughter Narelle Sunderland, was pushed in his wheelchair by Corporal Craig Cole and joined by the official Anzac Day special guest Lieutenant Colonel Dave Heatley. The Parkes Shire Concert Band set the pace for the rest of the procession of ex-servicemen and women and their relatives, and a good number of students representing seven schools, as well as other community groups. The younger generation also featured when the Parkes East Public School captains, Will Rix and Daisy Dawson, and the Parkes High School captains, Ethan Pay and Becky Wright, addressed the civic commemoration in Cooke Park. Lieutenant Colonel Dave Heatley specially thanked the students for embracing Anzac Day. “It will become part of your responsibility to continue this into the future,” he said. “Today is a special day for our country as we remember those who served in the Australian Defence Force. It is also a day of thanks and quiet reflection on what a lucky country we live in,” said Dave. “In a perfect world there would be no wars, no aggression and no requirement for a defence force. Unfortunately, this is not the

case and we need to preserve peace in our region and elsewhere in the world.” Dave, who joined the army after completing his schooling at Parkes High School in 1982, said some people say Anzac Day glorifies war. “But veterans will be the first to say that their greatest wish is that their children and this nation never have to witness the horrors of war again. We commemorate this special day to reflect on our freedoms that had been hard won and to recognise the futility of war.” By Maggi Barnard

How To Increase Wool Clip Lowest Soil Carbon In 100 Years Central West Lachlan Landcare (CWLL) will be hosting a workshop on Wednesday, 8th May focusing on managing soils for climate and market change. Guest speakers Guy Webb and Callen Thompson will present the latest information on cover cropping, increasing soil carbon and climatic expectations moving forward. “This is not only an opportunity for local landholders and interested community members to learn more about the opportunities to increase soil carbon and look at the possibilities to adapt farming systems, but to gain a greater understanding of using these options to increase productivity and profitability,” said Chairperson, Ben Kerin. Guy Webb is an agronomist with Agriwest in Forbes and the Founding Director of Soil C Quest, a not for profit organisation researching ways to empower farmers to draw down carbon, combining knowledge of microbiology and agricultural systems. Callen Thompson is a Senior Land Services Officer with Central West Local Land Services heading up the National Landcare Program assisting landholders to adapt their enterprise to meet the changing climatic conditions. This includes matching pasture and crop species and livestock requirements to feedbase capability. Workshops are in Parkes (12.30pm – 3pm) and Forbes (5pm – 7.30pm) on Wednesday, 8th May. RSVP to Marg on 0418 611 053 or cwllpo@hotmail.com.

Australia’s wool clip is forecast to be down to the lowest level in almost 100 years, mainly due to the drought. The Australian Wool Production Forecasting Committee has forecast the clip to be down by 12.7% on last year — a drop of 43 million kilograms, and the lowest yield since 1924 when the Australian wool industry was much smaller. As drought grips many of Australia’s wool growing regions, farmers are destocking to reduce how much they have to spend feeding their animals. Committee chair Russell Pattinson said: “While there were fewer sheep to shear, the industry was also receiving less wool per sheep. There’s one critical factor and that is the ongoing drought conditions in large parts of Australia’s wool producing regions.” “We’re looking at a 7% reduction of the sheep shorn and a 4.5% reduction in the average cut per head. Next shearing season is not looking any better, with the committee’s initial forecast for the 2019–2020 period down again, this time by 4.5%.” It’s not just the numbers that are an issue for wool producers and shearers. Michell Wool processes wool at its factory in Adelaide. Before they can process it, though, they have to clean the dust out of it. But the severity of the drought meant there was not enough ground cover to prevent erosion, meaning a lot more dust in wools. (Source: ABC News)

PARKES SPORT

Sensational Silver For Parkes Paddlers

Five Parkes paddlers came home with a silver medal from the Australian National Dragon Boat Championships in Canberra over Easter. Warren and Donna Edwards, Rochelle Smith, Linda Snyman and Maggi Barnard are members of the Parkes Dragon Boat Club (PDBC) and were selected to represent Western NSW at the Nationals where more than 3,000 paddlers competed over six days at Weston Park in Canberra. The Western team competed on Day four in the state vs state competition and came second in the 500m race in a time of 2.09.73. Victoria won the race in 2.08.91 and NSW North Coast was third in 2.10.74. PDBC President Bill Thomas said it was a mighty effort from the Western mixed team. “Well done to the ‘Fab Five’ in representing PDBC. All members are certainly proud of your achievements!” Linda Snyman, who was in the State team for the first time, said: “I was so proud to be representing Western NSW – winning the medal was an added bonus and made the months of hard training, both on and off the water, worthwhile.” First time Western coach Louise Linke from Bathurst was overjoyed with her team’s success. ”You improved your time from the

heat and came second in the final. Fantastic job - you are the second best mixed regional team in Australia!” Both the opens (men) and women’s teams also made it to the finals of the 500m races, which were both very closely contested. The opens team improved on their heat time and came fourth. The Women had a tough ‘gig’ racing in two heats before the final. In the final the last four teams only had 0.30 difference between them with the NSW Western

team in sixth place. The Western squad consisted of members of six other clubs in the Central West from Dubbo, Forbes, Orange, Bathurst, Lithgow and Wagga Wagga. The PDBC will be celebrating its first anniversary on Sunday, 26th May with a Come and Try Paddling day from 11am to 3pm at Lake Endeavour. Everyone is invited to enjoy the sunshine at the lake and a barbeque. For more information contact 0418 253 045.
