ONE OF US… White boots, glittering hotpants, platform shoes, sequined jumpsuits, ponchos, retro hippie outfits, colourful psychedelic dresses… A snap shot of what the 5,000 plus crowd looked like at the Trundle ABBA Festival last Saturday.
yABBA dABBA Doo!
The small town of Trundle transformed into a paradise of white boots, glittering hotpants, platform shoes, sequined jumpsuits, ponchos, retro hippie outfits and colourful psychedelic dresses as thousands of ABBA fans sang in unison ‘Thank you for the music’. More than 5,000 people came from every state in Australia, and even as far as the UK, South Africa and New Zealand for ‘the time of their lives’, and they were not disappointed. “This is the happiest place in the world,” said one fan on Facebook. “If you have ever thought to come here, don’t put it off. It’s just amazing fun!” Other glowing responses include: “We love you Trundle”, “It was a fabulous day, thank you Trundle!”, “First time and what a great time it was!”
Festival Organiser Pete Docwra said the highlight for him was seeing everyone having a great time. “We could not have hoped for more than that.” Pete also thanked Trundle residents and the Parkes Shire Council for all the support in making the event such a success. A major positive spin-off of the event is the economic benefit to the towns of Trundle, Parkes, Forbes and Condobolin. Pete said the region received a boost of about $1.3 million. Parkes Shire Mayor, Ken Keith, who donned his signature Benny outfit, thanked the crowd as he welcomed everyone to the festival and said their support meant a lot to the community during one of the worst droughts ever in the region. Continued from page 1 The Mayor and three representatives from the Swedish Embassy in Canberra helped to hand over the prizes for the popular Fashions of the Festival that include the Celia Vild Memorial Trophy. This year it went to a group from Melbourne who attended for the first time. But it was the 85-year-old Margaret from Adelaide who enthused the crowd with her spirit and love of life. She won the individual Fashions of the Festival prize, and stood right in front of the stage singing and dancing as the world famous tribute band Björn Again served up all the ABBA favourites. The band, who returns to Trundle every year, glowed with pleasure as they let the massive, colourful crowd take over the singing. The entertainment line-up included five other acts this year, with the popular
Parkes group Amitie energising the crowd to channel their inner ‘dancing queens’. With ‘absolutely overwhelming positive feedback’ to the organisers, all that is left to say is: “Mamma Mia it was fABBAlous!” By Maggi Barnard
At 85, Margaret from Adelaide still knows how to enjoy life as she danced to ABBA right in front of the stage.

YOUR HEALTH Matters
Spot The Difference: Cold And Flu Is it a cold or is it the flu? The flu and the common cold are both respiratory illness but are actually caused by different viruses. The common cold is usually milder than the flu and is characterised by a stuffy or runny nose. The flu is more severe and will last much longer than a cold. The symptoms of the flu include a fever, fatigue and aches and pains.
More Than Comfort And Cuddles
Teddy Bears are not really recognised as life savers, but a donation to the Parkes Ambulance Service could potentially make a huge difference to children. Currajong Disability Services, with the help of St. Vincent De Paul, recently donated hand-made teddy bears to Parkes Ambulance Services. The teddy bears will not only serve as a comfort to children but could potentially be a vital life-saving tool. Parkes Ambulance Service Station Officer Geoff Lovegrove said: “Teddy bears are helpful when we need children, who are injured or scared, to point to us on the teddy where they feel pain,” Geoff said. St. Vincent De Paul donated the teddies to the Currajong Sewing Group who repaired them.

Essential Dental Accessory There are many risks associated with children playing contact sport such as soccer, cricket, rugby, kickboxing, basketball or netball. The biggest risk with contact sports? The contact. Your child can receive a blow to the head, an elbow to the chin, or a knee to the cheek. A mouth guard is an essential piece of safety equipment to help protect their teeth, mouth and jaw. Without mouth protection we see a variety of injuries in our practice: cut lips, chipped or cracked teeth, tongue damage, jaw injury, knocked out teeth, brain concussion and TMJ issues. Unprotected, these injuries can require extensive restorative dentistry that can take years to complete. With a mouth guard, these are often preventable. That makes a mouth guard an inexpensive form of insurance. Contact Riaz Dental on 6862 1261 or visit www.riazdental.com.au for your dental needs.
How do I treat or prevent a cold? The first signs of a cold include a sore throat and a runny nose, followed by sneezing and coughing. Cold prevention is a mixture of washing your hands and simply avoiding sick people. Some vitamins can also help keep your immune system healthy. Unfortunately, there is no easy fix for the common cold. Individual symptoms needs to be treated. This means that what is right for one person, may not be right for another. Depending on your medications and existing medical conditions you may be better off with a simple nasal spray and cough mixture, or you may need something a little stronger. How do I treat or prevent the flu? The best prevention for the flu is to get vaccinated and to avoid people who have been diagnosed with the flu. Once you have the flu it is extremely important to rest and stay hydrated. If caught early the flu can be treated effectively. Go and see your doctor if you think you have the flu. There are a range of medications that can help with the symptoms and make you feel a little better. Feel better this winter with Parkes Pharmacy!

The German Feldkanone in Cooke Park was the centre of attention on Tuesday when Deputy Prime Minister came to have a look at it. From (L-R) are Paul Thomas, Cr George Pratt, Michael McCormack, Mayor Ken Keith and Bob Brooke. The 7.7cm Feldkanone FK16 has a range of 9.1km and its shells weigh 6.85kg.
New Look For 100-Year-Old Cannon
The 100-year-old German Feldkanone has been restored and recently returned to Cooke Park with a brand new coat of mid grey paint and two new wheels. A wheelwright from Bywong in NSW, Mark Burton, made the wheels to the original specification, and Councillor George Pratt undertook the rest of the restoration work with the help of Council workers at the depot. The project took about 16 months to complete. George explained the cannon was painted in its original mid grey colour, which matched the colour of German uniforms at the time. The colour also helped to camouflage the cannon during winter time when it snowed. On Tuesday Deputy Prime Minister and Member for Riverina Michael McCormack visited Parkes to see the end result as he was instrumental in assisting the Parkes RSL Sub-Branch to get a Commonwealth grant of $9,500. The Parkes Shire Council contributed $1,000 as did the Parkes RSL Sub-Branch.
“We need to conserve these monuments,” said Michael of the cannon that was offered to Parkes after an application to State Government was made for it. “It is a magnificent WWI relic and is now completely restored for people to see,” said Parkes RSL Sub-Branch secretary/treasurer Paul Thomas. He thanked Michael for his timely and generous support in assisting the local Sub-Branch and making time to see the end product in Cooke Park on Tuesday. Paul and George both thanked the Parkes Shire Council for its valuable assistance. Paul could not praise George enough for his commitment to the task. He also said the work of Mark Burton, the wheelwright, was outstanding and he was a credit to his industry. The cannon was officially dedicated by Parkes Mayor Ken Keith OAM and the town’s Anzac Day ambassador Lt Colonel David Heatley at the recent Commemorative Service.
The Parkes Regional Airport will play host to a premier three-day aviation expo in September. AirVenture Australia has announced it will be relocating this one-stopshop for anyone with an interest in aviation to Parkes from 20 to 22 September this year. It is expected to attract hundreds of aircraft and thousands of visitors over the three days. The focus of the event will be that ‘aviation is achievable’, and will feature a trade exhibition, careers expo, seminars and workshops, networking opportunities, and a thrill-a-minute air show on the Sunday. The event is rapidly gaining recognition as the largest annual gathering in Australia
for general, sport and recreational aviation. Parkes was attractive to AirVenture Australia for its stable weather patterns, first class airport, large accommodation offering, centrality to a large catchment of participants who drive and fly-in from all over Australia and for Parkes’ vibrancy and attraction to partners and families of participants. AirVenture Australia organiser David Young said: “The team is very excited about the event’s new home in Parkes. We have a new venue and new look event that is designed to attract a broad range of participants.” For more information visit www.airventureaustralia.com.au

OUR Gal
Jenny Freeman How long have you lived in Parkes and what do you like most about living here? I’ve lived in the Parkes area for almost 60 years. Country towns are such friendly places to live in and I wouldn’t want to go back to city living. Where do you work or what do you do currently and what do you enjoy about it? I was a teacher for 33 years and am now retired. I enjoy my garden, playing bridge, reading, doing puzzles and watching TV dramas, British crime and comedy shows. What makes you proud? I am proud of my three children and how they have achieved success. I’m also proud of former students who’ve done well in their lives. If you could be an animal which one would you choose, and why? I think I’d be a giraffe as they are graceful and friendly and are not a threat to other species or to humans. What is your all-time favourite movie, song and/or book, and why? My movie would probably be “The Sound of Music” because it’s based on a true story, has singing, humour, history and drama which are all things I enjoy. My favourite books are historical and ‘who dunnit’ novels. Tell us about your best holiday. My first visit overseas to the USA and Canada with local tour company Harris Travel was great, and also a recent trip to Turkey and Gallipoli to see where my father fought in WW1.
